- The System Wants Me To Save A Lucky Tycoon [Quick Transmigration]
- Chapter 15 - The Demon Sect Leader Suffers from Insomnia (2)
Lin Junqing had maintained his distance because he was a naturally cautious person. Liu Zheng could not concern himself with whether Lin Junqing would actually deliver the message to the Medicine Immortal Valley. He was too severely wounded, and as Lin Junqing was the only living person nearby, he had no choice but to place his hope in him.
As soon as Liu Zheng finished drawing the route to the valley, his last breath faded away. Lin Junqing stood still, recalling a technique from television called tortoise breathing, which allowed one to stop breathing as if dead.
The System watched him and asked, “Host, are you afraid of dead people?”
Lin Junqing replied, “You do not understand. What if he is only pretending to be dead?”
The System was speechless. “He is truly dead. You can go over with peace of mind. No living creature can escape my detection. If he were faking it, I would have alerted you immediately.”
Lin Junqing had learned a new function of the System: it could detect if someone was feigning death. Approaching a corpse at close range for the first time, Lin Junqing felt a chill in his heart. After a deep breath, he walked toward Liu Zheng. He first secured the map to the Medicine Immortal Valley and then checked the man’s pouch. Finding a few pieces of broken silver and over a dozen copper coins, he felt a wave of relief. He firmly believed that without money, one could not take a single step in any world.
Before leaving, Lin Junqing heard wolves howling in the distance. Not wanting Liu Zheng’s body to be dragged away, he dragged it into a hollow and buried it. With Liu Zheng’s sword in hand, he prepared to set out for the Medicine Immortal Valley. He found Liu Zheng’s map completely incomprehensible, but fortunately, he had the System to guide him.
Because he possessed a weapon, Lin Junqing managed to kill a rabbit hiding in a hole under the System’s direction, enjoying his first full meal. As he devoured the rabbit meat, he felt immense satisfaction.
Half a month later, Lin Junqing’s face was covered in stubble and grime, and his eyes were filled with exhaustion. His clothes were stained the color of mud, and he leaned heavily on Liu Zheng’s sword as he struggled through the dense forest.
“System, how much longer until we reach the Medicine Immortal Valley? I have been walking in these mountains for half a month, eating nothing but roasted meat every day. There are no wild fruits in this season, and if I do not get some vitamins, I will not be able to hold on.”
Heaven knew he had spent nearly an hour crouching by a stream just yesterday. At this rate, he would be ruined.
The System comforted him, “Almost there. According to Liu Zheng’s map, the Medicine Immortal Valley is located in the hills ahead. We will surely reach it after crossing one more mountain.”
Lin Junqing let out a weary sigh and dragged his nearly disintegrated shoes forward. Along the way, he had been bitten by spiders and venomous snakes, and chased by wild boars. Often, even with the System’s warnings, his slow reflexes meant he could not escape. Especially at night, he was so exhausted that he just wanted to collapse. Even when the System warned him that a venomous snake was slithering toward him, he would not open his eyes, letting the snake bite him before falling back to sleep. Walking cautiously by day had left him so tired that he could no longer feel the pain of the bites.
Three days later, Lin Junqing crossed the mountain. Feeling as though he had only half a life left, he had barely reached the stream when someone jumped down from a tree to block his path.
“May I ask who you are, and why do you carry the sword of Uncle Liu?”
Upon hearing a human voice, Lin Junqing felt a moment of delirium followed by ecstasy. “Are you a disciple of the Medicine Immortal Valley? I was entrusted by Senior Liu Zheng to deliver an urgent message to the elders of your valley.”
Sensing that Lin Junqing lacked internal energy, the disciple did not draw his sword but sent a companion into the valley to report. Soon, two disciples brought Lin Junqing into the valley. The System remarked, “The Medicine Immortal Valley is protected by treacherous terrain and blanketed in toxic mist year round. Without a guide, one would surely get lost.” Lin Junqing nodded in agreement.
Lin Junqing was taken to see the valley elder, Zhou Zhi. As soon as Zhou Zhi saw the sword in Lin Junqing’s hand, his expression turned somber. “I know Zheng er has been murdered. When you saw him, what did he tell you?”
In the martial arts world, a sword was a warrior’s soul; if the sword was lost, the man was dead. Seeing the sword in Lin Junqing’s hand, anyone would know that Liu Zheng’s fate was sealed. Lin Junqing respectfully handed the sword to Zhou Zhi with both hands and recounted their meeting and Liu Zheng’s dying request, word for word.
Zhou Zhi’s brow furrowed, and his expression darkened. A senior disciple had betrayed the valley, revealing the location of the valley’s greatest treasure, the Medicine Jade, to the Demon Sect. Since the new sect leader, Chu Yu, had taken power over a decade ago, he had been raiding sects for treasures everywhere. If Chu Yu discovered the Medicine Jade, he would surely come to seize it; it was a priceless heirloom handed down from their founder. The valley had long lived in seclusion, and its disciples focused on medicine rather than combat. If the Demon Sect attacked, how could they resist?
Zhou Zhi sighed and closed his eyes to contemplate a strategy. The Medicine Jade was the sect’s lifeblood; as long as the jade remained, the valley lived. Fortunately, Liu Zheng had sent someone to warn them, allowing the valley to prepare. If they had waited until the Demon Sect arrived at the foot of the mountain, it would have been a true catastrophe.
After his deliberations, Zhou Zhi looked at Lin Junqing. “Thank you, young friend. I will have a disciple escort you out of the valley and gift you one hundred taels for your trouble.”
Lin Junqing bowed quickly. “Senior, I have no family or place to go. May I join the Medicine Immortal Valley?” He had no intention of leaving after having finally reached the place. He had had enough of life in the wilderness.
Zhou Zhi frowned, confused. “Young friend, you know the predicament we are in. The valley is being targeted by the Demon Sect; it is not safe here. You should leave. If you are worried about finding a place to stay, I can have my disciples buy you a small house in the town.”
Because Lin Junqing had no internal energy and had used a blurry map to cross dangerous forests for half a month to deliver the warning, he had allowed the valley to prepare in advance. As long as his request was not unreasonable, Zhou Zhi was inclined to agree. Lin Junqing knew this was his chance. With the valley’s gratitude, joining them was far better than searching for unknown sects.
“Senior, I believe that evil will never triumph over good. It will not be easy for the Demon Sect to seize the valley’s treasure. I have always admired the conduct of the Medicine Immortal Valley and wish to contribute what little I can. Rest assured, I will follow the valley’s arrangements and never cause trouble.”
Zhou Zhi appreciated Lin Junqing; the sentiment that evil could not overcome good resonated with him. However, he did not rashly accept him as a disciple. He remained suspicious: how could an ordinary person without internal energy survive the dangerous forests to reach the valley? He had observed that Lin Junqing was miraculously unscathed.
After hesitating, Zhou Zhi asked, “Are you willing to become my student? You are a bit old, so I cannot accept you as a formal disciple; you will have to be a nominal one.”
Lin Junqing was overjoyed. Knowing how much the ancients valued lineage, he knelt and kowtowed three times. “Disciple Lin Junqing greets Master.”
Zhou Zhi stroked his beard and smiled. “Good. Stay here for now until you are familiar with the environment.” He still suspected Lin Junqing might be a spy for the Demon Sect, but he found it hard to believe the sect would send someone without martial arts skills. If Lin Junqing had simply taken the money and left, he would have felt no suspicion, but the fact that he insisted on staying despite knowing the danger made Zhou Zhi wary.
Lin Junqing did not care; he knew he had successfully joined the Medicine Immortal Valley and become Zhou Zhi’s student, which meant he could finally learn martial arts.
Zhou Zhi went to find the Valley Master, while a medicine boy led Lin Junqing to a room. After bathing and changing into new clothes, Lin Junqing felt reborn. Zhou Zhi had the boy monitor Lin Junqing, but Lin Junqing remained indifferent. If Zhou Zhi did not suspect him, there would be something wrong with the elder’s mind. Since he was not actually a spy, no matter how much Zhou Zhi suspected him, he would find no evidence.
To try and force a slip up, Zhou Zhi even granted Lin Junqing an identity token, allowing him access to the library previously reserved for formal disciples, which was a great stroke of luck. Zhou Zhi even taught him martial arts personally, just to see if he truly lacked internal energy. After monitoring him for a while and checking his bones to confirm he had never practiced martial arts, Zhou Zhi gradually ceased his suspicions. He concluded that Lin Junqing had simply been lucky to arrive unscathed.
Luck was a mysterious thing; no one could explain it.
Lin Junqing had the System memorize all the medical texts and acupuncture points. He mastered in two months what was supposed to take half a year. Zhou Zhi was surprised to find Lin Junqing had a photographic memory, which further convinced him he was not a spy; no sect would waste such a genius as a spy. Zhou Zhi began teaching him medicine personally.
Lin Junqing was highly gifted; he never made the same mistake twice. Every time he left, Zhou Zhi lamented why he had not met Lin Junqing sooner. Lin Junqing was poor at martial arts but had immense talent for medicine. Had he been raised from childhood, the Valley Master would surely have groomed him to be his successor.
Lin Junqing studied diligently, though the System was perplexed. “Host, your blood may not cure everything, but it can definitely neutralize almost any poison and treat most illnesses. Why bother learning medicine?”
Lin Junqing smiled. “Learning medicine helps me hide my identity. If I ever act on a whim and save someone with my blood, people will attribute it to my medical skills, not suspect the blood itself.”
He could not spend all his time practicing martial arts or he would exhaust his body; medicine was a good diversion. The System gave him a thumbs up. “Host, you are truly cautious and forward thinking. Amazing.”
“The atmosphere in the valley has become very heavy over the past few months. I hear Demon Sect disciples have appeared outside. If they attack, what should we do?”
Lin Junqing curled his lip. “What else can we do? We run.” He could not fight the Demon Sect; he was not about to throw his life away. He felt a bit of affection for the valley, as his master and fellow disciples were kind, but he knew his own limits. If the sect attacked, staying behind would only cause trouble for his peers. Over the past few months, he had practiced only one skill: the lightness technique for fleeing.
