- Chapter 84 - Accepting the Unexpected
In this world, many things are destined to happen, even when they feel unexpected.
Before transmigrating into this era, Song Mingyue never imagined she would have to endure such hardships. Before marrying Chen Che, she also never imagined she would find herself truly falling for someone. Thus, this child was an accident, yet, as it turns out, perhaps not entirely unwelcome.
After venting all her frustrations on Chen Che, Mingyue’s mood inexplicably improved. Since this child was meant to stay, why not let go of her own resistance and settle into the reality of the situation?
The next morning, Chen Che rose early. Without Mingyue knowing, he had already gone to the military base to request a day off. When she woke up, she found corn and eggs simmering in the pot, but the house was empty. Just as she stepped out of the kitchen with her breakfast, Chen Che happened to walk into the courtyard.
Seeing him, Mingyue asked, confused, “Why are you back already?”
Seeing that she was in a good state of mind, the tension that had gripped Chen Che finally eased. “Eat your breakfast first. Once you’re finished, I’ll take you to the doctor so we can see how to handle everything.”
“Oh,” Mingyue replied, sitting down and eating the corn slowly.
Chen Che sat beside her, peeling an egg and holding it out to her. “Have an egg, too.”
As she took the egg and swallowed, she asked, “Do you really dislike this child that much? If you aren’t ready to accept it, we can go and have it removed.”
Wait… that sounded ambiguous. Chen Che didn’t dare overthink it, fearing this might be a test from Mingyue.
“Yueyue, I’ll listen to you. If you don’t want the child, we’ll remove it. If we can’t do it here, we’ll go to the provincial capital; if not there, then to Beijing. I just don’t want you to suffer.”
Mingyue didn’t want to hear the rest. She finished the last bite of the egg and said, “Of course I don’t want to abort it.”
“What did you say?” Chen Che looked flustered and incredulous, especially since she had been so adamant about terminating the pregnancy before.
Mingyue continued, “Don’t you think this child is fated to be with us? No matter how much I tried to push it away, the child is so stubborn—it insists on staying.”
Chen Che was overjoyed and couldn’t help but pull her into a hug. “Yueyue, thank you.”
He didn’t know why he felt the need to thank her, but he knew that choosing to keep this child meant Mingyue would have to sacrifice much more than he would. From now on, he decided, he would love her even more. In just one night, his mindset had undergone a complete transformation. He was going to be a father! And it was a child between him and Song Mingyue. His heart, which had been steady for so long, was now filled with joy and profound emotion.
Mingyue also felt a weight lift from her heart. She realized that keeping secrets wasn’t easy, and shifting her perspective had changed everything. Now that she had accepted the child, the future felt clearer.
In this era, many women continued to work while pregnant, as their physical constitution was generally stronger than those of later generations. Aside from some morning sickness, she felt fine. She could continue to stay busy for now, and once the shop was stable, she would have more time. Her priority was to make money; once she had enough, she could simply hire a nanny.
When she met with Zhang Jingjing later, Jingjing was more nervous than she was. “Mingyue, you’re an expectant mother now. You must not do what you used to do, and certainly don’t carry anything heavy. Just tell me if you need anything done.”
Seeing Jingjing’s sincere concern, Mingyue was deeply moved. She laughed and said, “Of course. You’re the child’s only godmother, so you’ll definitely have to put in some effort for him.”
Jingjing rubbed her belly. “Godson, did you hear that? Your godmother is working hard for you.”
As they walked, Jingjing suddenly hesitated. “By the way, Yueyue, Old Yu doesn’t seem to know about this yet. Don’t mention it if he doesn’t ask.”
“Why not?”
“It’s just… you know how he is. I haven’t been able to conceive, and it makes him unhappy.”
“Not being able to conceive isn’t your fault alone; he bears the primary responsibility. Besides, news will spread throughout the compound, and he’ll find out eventually. Jingjing, you can’t be afraid of him regarding this.”
It was a sore spot. Jingjing could argue with him about anything else, but when it came to children, she felt guilty, believing it was her own shortcoming. She thought Mingyue was just comforting her, but Mingyue spoke with conviction: “Look it up in a biology book. A fertilized egg is a combination of sperm and ovum. Even if the ovum is healthy, the man’s sperm might not be.”
Jingjing blushed and pulled her aside, embarrassed. “Mingyue, how can you say such things in public?”
“I’m just giving you the facts. In any case, if you don’t have children, it could be Old Yu’s issue. Don’t put all the blame on yourself.”
Jingjing was quite progressive in other aspects, but on the topic of childbirth, she seemed brainwashed by the idea that a woman was useless if she couldn’t bear children. Hearing Mingyue’s comforting words, she felt a sense of reconciliation with herself. She realized it wasn’t entirely her fault.
Jingjing held Mingyue’s arm, her eyes full of admiration. “Mingyue, you know so much. I really envy you.”
Mingyue nodded. “I envy myself, too, for having such a good friend.”
“Oh, you’re terrible, why are you being so sentimental?”
“I’m being serious.”
Jingjing felt even happier. Mingyue truly was her guiding light; her presence had completely transformed her.
