- Chapter 83 - The Secret That Cannot Be Hidden
Song Mingyue leaned against Chen Che, who, showing no signs of anger, patiently dried her hair with a towel.
From her angle, she could only see his alluring, masculine Adam’s apple—like a piece of tempting candy that made her want to take a bite. But now was not the time. She swallowed hard, reminding herself that she had serious business to attend to and must not let herself be distracted by his looks.
Sensing her behavior, Chen Che had already guessed something was up. He moved to turn, cradling her as he finished drying her hair, and asked with a smile, “Tell me, what’s going on?”
Song Mingyue wrapped her arms around his neck and cooed, “It’s nothing major, really. We’re short on funds for the shop. Boss, could I borrow some money from you?”
Chen Che took the opportunity to pull her closer, unable to resist pinching her earlobe as he asked, “Is the money you have now not enough?”
“That’s Boss Chen’s money; I wouldn’t dare touch it without permission,” Song Mingyue said, lifting her head with sparkling eyes. “So, is Boss Chen willing to lend me some?”
Chen Che replied, “Boss Chen doesn’t have any money. All his money is with his wife.”
“His wife says she’s willing to lend it. The return on investment is quite high.”
“Hmm. Then, she shall lend it.”
With that, he leaned down and kissed her. Song Mingyue responded with all her heart. Chen Che picked her up, carried her from the living room to the bedroom, and after gently placing her on the bed, asked breathlessly, “Is this enough money? If not, I can borrow from friends.”
“It’s enough for now.”
Looking at his handsome, sexually tense face, Song Mingyue felt herself succumbing to “lovesickness.” However, she hadn’t forgotten the final step: there was a child in her womb, and she certainly couldn’t be reckless.
Just as she was about to speak, Chen Che pulled back and kissed her ear. “Your body hasn’t fully recovered yet. Get some rest early.”
With Chen Che’s support, Song Mingyue withdrew all the savings they had. As for the renovation, Pei Xiaoyu had recommended a skilled carpenter in their village, whom Song Mingyue visited in person.
She was busy every day, but it was a fulfilling kind of busy. Twenty days passed in the blink of an eye.
The doctor had initially told her to take the medication for two weeks to see how things went. However, Song Mingyue had been so preoccupied with work that she often forgot to take it. It wasn’t until the 15th day that she finally went to the hospital alone.
At any other time, she might have had the chance to rest, but this was the busiest start-up phase of her business. Song Mingyue hadn’t even considered whether she would need to rest or continue working the next day if she successfully terminated the pregnancy. But things had reached this point, and complaining was useless; she could only take it one step at a time.
As soon as she arrived at the hospital, Song Mingyue ran into acquaintances from their residential compound. Usually, people wouldn’t be so cautious about pregnancy, but the standard of living in the compound was higher, and they were more attentive to such matters. Thus, there was a high probability of running into neighbors in the obstetrics department, which was one of the reasons why news about her had spread in the first place.
Both women were surprised to see her; they had all heard that Song Mingyue had already lost her baby and that the miscarriage recovery should have been finished by now.
“Mingyue, are you pregnant again?”
“No, I just haven’t been feeling well since the last incident.”
“If you’re not feeling well, why are you at the obstetrics department? The doctors here mostly deal with pregnant women.”
Song Mingyue didn’t panic. “It’s related to my previous miscarriage. The doctors here are more knowledgeable about that, so I’m here for a consultation.” By the end, she had lost all patience. Seeing that she was truly unhappy, they assumed she hadn’t recovered emotionally from the last event, so they exchanged brief greetings and left.
Once in the office, the doctor issued another set of test orders.
The results were not good—in fact, they were worse than before. She had a failed indicator, and if she insisted on proceeding, it would likely lead to a massive hemorrhage.
The doctor said calmly, “This isn’t something you can decide on your own. Bring your family and discuss it. Currently, all the baby’s indicators are normal. Our suggestion is to carry it to term. We cannot perform this surgery here. If you are determined to do it, you would have to go to a provincial hospital, but since there are no defects in the fetus, they may not be willing to perform the procedure either.”
It was like a bolt from the blue.
Song Mingyue even considered finding a small clinic to handle it, but the doctor, as if reading her mind, emphasized, “Do not go to an unregulated clinic under any circumstances. Your situation is different from others; there is a very high risk to your life.”
As someone who valued her own life above all else, she immediately abandoned that fleeting thought.
Song Mingyue couldn’t help but ask, “Doctor, why is only my indicator problematic? Is it because I’m lacking certain elements that weren’t replenished? Can I try taking the medication for another two weeks?”
“By logic, this is a congenital genetic issue. You’ve already taken the medicine for so many days—if it hasn’t worked, it’s unlikely to improve later.”
So, after all that, she was forced to give birth to this child against her will?
Song Mingyue felt like she was on the verge of a breakdown. She never expected such a thing to happen to her. With other patients waiting outside, the doctor told her to go home and think about it before calling the next person in.
Zhang Jingjing happened to bump into her at the gate of the compound. Not knowing what had happened, and seeing Song Mingyue’s dejected expression, she rushed over. “Mingyue, where did you go? I thought you were resting at home this afternoon. Why are you running around?”
Song Mingyue glanced at her and let out a sigh.
This made Zhang Jingjing even more anxious. She chased after her, asking, “What exactly happened? Why won’t you even tell me?”
It was a burden to carry alone, not knowing what to do. Song Mingyue led Zhang Jingjing to a shady spot on the nearby playground and told her everything that had been happening. After hearing it, Zhang Jingjing could only think it was unbelievable; she pinched her own arm to ensure she wasn’t dreaming.
“Mingyue, you’re too bold! How could you keep something like this hidden? You even managed to hide it from your mother-in-law when they were here.”
“They aren’t the point. Do you think I can still get rid of this child?”
“Of course not! The doctor said it would be life-threatening. We can’t take that risk.” Zhang Jingjing was puzzled. “Besides, Mingyue, why don’t you want to give birth to this child? Your Commander Chen is clearly a reliable husband and would surely be an excellent father. If I were you, I’d be hoping for a child.”
“But our business has just started; we’re too busy. Where would I find the time to raise a child?”
“Of course you would! You have me. From now on, you can just sit back and call the shots. We’ll handle the physical labor. But I have one condition,” Zhang Jingjing said with a grin.
Song Mingyue asked, “What condition?”
“When the baby is born, I want to be the godmother—the only godmother. Mingyue, given our relationship, you can do that for me, right?”
Song Mingyue wasn’t in the mood to entertain the question; she was still thinking about what to do next. It was true that the things she feared most were the ones that came to pass.
These past few days, Song Mingyue had been extremely busy. Often, when Chen Che got home from work, she still hadn’t returned. There were plenty of rumors outside, and someone even stopped Chen Che today to ask if he wasn’t worried about his wife running around all day and why he didn’t seem to mind. Chen Che offered no explanation, simply dismissing them by saying she had her own work to attend to.
However, when he returned home today, it was clear that she was deeply unhappy.
Thinking she had heard the gossip, Chen Che tried to comfort her. “Yueyue, do you remember what you told me before? Accomplishing something inevitably involves many setbacks. These are just idle whispers; you don’t need to take them to heart.”
She replied with a hint of anger, “It’s far more serious than idle whispers.”
Chen Che grew nervous. “What is it, then?”
Song Mingyue decided to be honest. Why should she have to carry everything? The responsibility should be his as well.
Song Mingyue said, “I didn’t get rid of the child. It’s too late now. The doctor said my health isn’t good. What should I do?”
Hearing this news suddenly, Chen Che was stunned. He had already mentally prepared himself for the child to be gone. To be told this now left him without a reaction. Seeing the sorrow on her face brought him back to reality, and he tried to soothe her anxiety. “Why can’t it be removed?”
Song Mingyue gave him a brief reason, and perhaps to spite him, she emphasized, “The doctor said we could try going to the provincial capital; perhaps there’s still hope.”
“Yueyue, don’t rush. My teacher’s wife is a doctor with good skills. I’ll go with you tomorrow to see her and hear what she has to say.”
“Do you… not want this child either?”
Chen Che went silent, but Song Mingyue stared at him fixedly, waiting for an answer.
Chen Che hesitated, but finally dared not face her. “Yueyue, I don’t want to lie to you. I want this child. Not just because it’s mine, but more importantly, because it’s ours—it has half of your blood.”
There was one more thing he didn’t dare to say: in their line of work, they had to be prepared for the possibility of making the ultimate sacrifice at any moment. Chen Che simply hoped that if something ever happened to him, Song Mingyue would still have a piece of him left. He also wanted to be a father—to have a child who stood as tall as Yueyue.
However, Chen Che urgently added, “But I fully respect your decision. I said before that I support whatever you choose to do.”
Song Mingyue asked with emotion, “I lied to you before and said the baby was gone. Aren’t you angry?”
“It’s okay. But I hope that when things happen, you can discuss them with me instead of carrying the burden alone.” Chen Che stared at her with tender eyes. “But I know you must be hurting.”
Just like now—knowing how much she had been through, Song Mingyue wouldn’t have spoken up if she hadn’t been truly devastated. Yet, he realized there was so little he could do.
