- Chapter 9 - Susceptibility and Heat
That single question forced the ailing Ning Youji to exercise every ounce of restraint to suppress his bodily impulses. He released Lin Yan and pulled back, creating a small distance between them.
Lin Yan met Ning Youji’s dark gaze. Only then did he realize how reckless he had been. However, the thought of his sister made his heart sink. This was a debt that had to be repaid sooner or later.
Ning Youji’s eyes were dark, and his voice was raspy. “Are you serious?”
Lin Yan looked away, avoiding the question directly. Instead, he asked again, “Are you going to bite or not?”
After a moment of hesitation, Ning Youji replied, “There is no need. I will not force anyone.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Ning Youji frowned and let out a sharp hiss of pain. He clutched his gland, his body leaning forward as he began to collapse. Lin Yan acted quickly, stepping forward to support him.
“Are you okay?” Lin Yan asked, his tone tense with worry.
Ning Youji rested his head on Lin Yan’s shoulder and remained silent. Under these circumstances, an Alpha’s possessiveness reaches its peak, and a terrifying thought crossed his mind. Ultimately, he forced himself to suppress the urge to claim the youth. With his intelligence and pheromones surging violently within him, Ning Youji lost consciousness and fainted.
Lin Yan sat by the hospital bed, watching the unconscious boy. A knock sounded at the door. Lin Yan opened it to find an elderly doctor standing there.
“Who are you?” Lin Yan asked, puzzled.
The doctor adjusted his glasses, sized Lin Yan up, and walked into the room. “I am Ning Youji’s attending physician. Did you bring him here?”
Lin Yan nodded. The doctor paused and turned to look at him. “Then you were present when his pheromones were being released?”
Lin Yan didn’t think much of the question, assuming it was standard medical inquiry, and nodded again. This doctor was personally employed by the Ning family and had followed Ning Youji to Dongcheng.
“Are you an Omega?” the doctor asked, testing the waters.
Lin Yan finally realized something was off. He wasn’t the one who was sick, so why the personal questions? Still, he answered honestly, “Yes, I am an Omega.”
A mysterious smile touched the doctor’s wrinkled lips. “Would it be convenient for you to undergo a blood test?”
Lin Yan frowned, his unease growing. Seeing his hesitation, the doctor spoke plainly. “I am the physician hired by the Ning family. Ning Youji suffers from severe Susceptibility Period Outbreak Syndrome. His body is different from a typical Alpha; he needs the pheromones of a compatible Omega to regulate his condition.”
The doctor sighed. “We have searched for years and haven’t found a compatible Omega. The highest compatibility we found was only 89%.”
Lin Yan looked at the pale boy on the bed. A faint scent of sandalwood still drifted around him. “Is there really no other way for him besides Omega pheromones?” Lin Yan’s expression soured. It felt strange that someone as powerful as Ning Youji had to depend so heavily on another person.
The doctor shook his head. “I cannot give you all the details, but if you are willing, please take a blood test.”
Lin Yan looked at the person on the bed once more and finally nodded. As he left the room, his own body began to ache with a sensation similar to thirst. After the blood draw, he returned to the room. Breathing in the faint sandalwood scent, he finally felt a bit better.
The results came back quickly. The doctor stared at the report in shock: the pheromone compatibility index was a staggering 99.99%. It was an unprecedented number. However, the youth’s own pheromone level wasn’t very high, which was a bit of a pity.
The doctor tucked the report away and looked at Lin Yan again with a smile. “Student, could you help Ning Youji? You and his pheromones are a perfect match.”
Lin Yan frowned and glanced at Ning Youji. Thinking of his sister, he ran his tongue over his teeth. “What do I need to do?”
The doctor was surprised by how quickly he agreed. He explained the situation. “Ning Youji’s innate Alpha secretions are too powerful. Combined with his superior intelligence, his body carries too much energy, making his susceptibility periods irregular. While others experience them three to six times a year, Ning Youji faces them more than a dozen times.”
Lin Yan’s mouth twitched. To put it simply, the guy was just too talented.
“He could endure it before, but as he grows older, his pheromones are becoming harder to control,” the doctor continued. He watched Lin Yan’s expression before being blunt. “Therefore, in moments of necessity, would you allow him to perform a temporary mark on you to control the condition?”
Lin Yan’s brow furrowed. The doctor, thinking he was about to refuse, quickly added, “Actually, just staying by his side can alleviate the symptoms. Marking is indeed a difficult request.”
Lin Yan spoke with a hint of seriousness. “I understand. If it is necessary, I will let him mark me.”
The doctor was stunned. He hadn’t expected such an easy agreement. For a moment, he wondered if these two were already in a relationship, but knowing Ning Youji’s personality, he dismissed the thought.
“I will relay this to the Ning family,” the doctor said. “You can give me your bank details; they will compensate you.”
“No need,” Lin Yan replied. “Consider this a way of repaying a debt.”
Repaying a debt? The doctor wanted to ask more, but his phone rang. Seeing it was Mrs. Ning, he hurried out of the room.
When Ning Youji woke up, it was already dark. Only a warm yellow wall lamp was lit. As he tried to sit up, he realized someone was leaning against the edge of the bed.
The youth’s sleeping face was exceptionally handsome. His long eyelashes were cast down, and his skin was pale. He was usually so arrogant, but in his sleep, he looked incredibly well-behaved and refined. Ning Youji looked at him and couldn’t help but reach out to touch his soft hair.
Suddenly, he caught a faint floral scent in the air, merging with his sandalwood. Lin Yan’s eyelashes fluttered, and he opened them slightly. “You’re awake?” he asked in a groggy voice. He rubbed his eyes, feeling weak and heavy-headed.
Ning Youji looked at him. Perhaps due to the illness, his voice was hoarse. “Did you release pheromones to soothe me?”
“No,” Lin Yan replied with the laziness of someone who hadn’t fully woken up. “I just differentiated and can’t even control my pheromones yet. How could I soothe you?”
Ning Youji looked at him and reminded him gently, “Your heat cycle has started.”
Lin Yan’s body went rigid. He gave Ning Youji a cold glare. “Your heat cycle is the one that started! You’re crazy!”
However, before he could finish, a wave of heat surged from the gland at the back of his neck down to his tailbone. In an instant, the room was flooded with the scent of magnolia. The pheromones were even more intense and intoxicating than during his differentiation.
Seeing Lin Yan’s shocked expression, Ning Youji chuckled softly. “Was I wrong?”
Alpha pheromones can influence an Omega to a certain extent, sometimes even forcing or triggering their heat cycle. Since Lin Yan’s expected heat hadn’t arrived for a month, it wasn’t surprising that it was being triggered now.
Lin Yan felt increasingly strange. Every breath he took was hot, and sweat broke out on his forehead. Every breath he inhaled was full of the Alpha’s scent. He clenched his hands, wanting to flee; he didn’t want anyone to see him in such a vulnerable state.
But as he stood up, his legs failed him. He collapsed, but Ning Youji acted quickly to catch him, pulling Lin Yan directly onto his chest. Lin Yan froze before struggling to climb off.
Ning Youji pinned his waist and spoke in a low, gentle voice, “I won’t do anything to you. Just stay still.”
“Let go of me!” Lin Yan continued to struggle. Neither in his past life nor this one had he ever shown such a fragile side to anyone.
Ning Youji gritted his teeth and released his Alpha pheromones. His body was still weak, and the release caused a sharp pain in his gland. He frowned. “Stop fighting.”
Soothed by the Alpha pheromones, Lin Yan’s fingers curled into Ning Youji’s hospital gown. “What are you doing? I don’t need your pheromones. I’ll go find a doctor for a suppressant.”
“Do you know how many Alphas are out there?” Ning Youji didn’t let go; instead, he tightened his grip. “You’d be torn apart before you even found a doctor. Don’t be naive.”
Ning Youji’s pheromones lightly brushed over the Omega’s gland. His voice was almost seductive. “Try to accept my pheromones.”
Lin Yan didn’t argue further. More accurately, he no longer had the strength to struggle. Seeing him still, Ning Youji worried he had released too much. “Do my pheromones make you uncomfortable?”
Lin Yan wasn’t uncomfortable. On the contrary, it felt too good—so good that he wanted to crave even more. The last scent of disinfectant in the room was completely buried by the wood and floral fragrances. Lin Yan’s last shred of logic collapsed. He clung to Ning Youji’s neck, burying his head there as if searching for a cure for the heat in his body.
Ning Youji pinned Lin Yan’s restless hands. He wasn’t doing much better. If he hadn’t already exhausted so much energy earlier, there was no telling what would be happening in this room right now. Realizing things were getting out of hand, Ning Youji pulled a blanket over Lin Yan.
Wrapped in the blanket, the Omega felt miserable and nuzzled closer to Ning Youji’s neck. Ning Youji, having no strength left, let him sniff as much as he wanted. He released some soothing pheromones to satisfy the Omega. After a long time, the person in his arms finally settled down.
Footsteps approached, and the door opened. Su Xue rushed in, only to be met with the sight of her son holding a youth in his arms. Having received a call from the doctor, she had flown from Nancheng immediately. She hadn’t expected to see this.
Ning Youji was a light sleeper and opened his eyes at the noise. Seeing it was his mother, he pressed the person in his arms closer to his chest.
“Mom,” he called out.
Su Xue looked at Ning Youji, her gaze settling on the youth. “Is it him?”
Ning Youji knew what she meant. His gaze darkened. “I’m not sure. His intelligence isn’t high, and his pheromones aren’t strong.”
“But the pheromones are a match,” Su Xue added, emphasizing every word.
Ning Youji frowned. Seeing his defensive posture, Su Xue laughed. “What do you think of your mother? Looking at you now, are you afraid I’m going to eat him?”
It isn’t impossible, Ning Youji thought.
“Fine, I’m just teasing,” Su Xue said, lowering her voice. “How is your body?”
Ning Youji replied, “I’m okay. It wasn’t particularly severe this time.”
Su Xue had been in such a hurry she forgot to look at the boy’s files. She was curious. “What is his name?”
“Lin Yan,” Ning Youji replied after a moment of hesitation.
Just then, the youth in his arms moved. Ning Youji tried to shield him, but he was a step too late. Lin Yan’s flushed face emerged from the crook of his neck. He was sleeping soundly, nuzzling against the skin of Ning Youji’s neck.
Ning Youji: “…”
Su Xue looked at the boy’s clean, pale face. He had long eyelashes and a straight nose, looking different from a typical Omega. His eyelids had several folds, suggesting large eyes, and his lips were a vivid red.
Realizing the situation, Su Xue sniffed the air. No wonder she had noticed a sweet scent when she walked in. She looked at their posture, cleared her throat, and stood up.
“Call me if you need anything. I’ll stay in Dongcheng for a few days until you recover.” At the door, she paused and glanced back at Ning Youji with a hint of a smile. “You are still young. Don’t do things that aren’t suitable for your age.”
Ning Youji: “…”
