- Chapter 7 - Passing Every Subject
On the day the results were released, the entire school was buzzing with anticipation. Because the forum polls had leaned so heavily toward one side, if the school bully actually passed any subjects, the students who voted for him to fail would lose everything. While no one wanted to offend the school bully, the outcome seemed so certain that most people had couldn’t resist joining in on the gamble.
The first class of the morning was Chinese. The vice-homeroom teacher, Shen Yun, walked in holding the stack of graded papers. The classroom for Class 7 was deathly silent, a sharp contrast to its usual rowdiness. Everyone was curious about the bully’s actual performance.
Shen Yun glanced at the back row, her gaze lingering on a certain youth. She offered a faint smile before looking away. “When I call your name, come up and collect your paper.”
“Ning Youji, 145 points.”
The class fell silent for three seconds before erupting like boiling water. “My god, what kind of monstrous score is that!” “God Ning is truly God Ning. Incredible!” “He has secured first place in Chinese again. Now it’s just a matter of seeing how many points he leads second place by.”
As the teacher continued to hand out papers, the students of Class 7 grew increasingly nervous. Shen Yun seemed to know exactly what they were waiting for. She finished distributing the papers for the entire class, leaving only Lin Yan’s on the desk.
She scanned the room and spoke unhurriedly. “Class 7 performed quite well in Chinese this time. The intelligence test is only two days away. Students who have the potential to push for a better score should use their time wisely.”
The students were burning with anxiety and could not help but urge her on. “Teacher, we understand everything you’ve said, but there is still one student whose paper hasn’t been handed out.”
Shen Yun looked at the final paper in her hand. Even after looking at it several times, she was still shocked. She decided to stop teasing them. “In this test, the highest score in the entire tenth grade is in our class, and the student who showed the most improvement is also in our class.”
The room went silent. Everyone turned their heads in unison to look at the boy in the back row. As the subject of their scrutiny, Lin Yan was currently spinning his pen with a bored expression. His hands were beautiful, with long, slender fingers.
The sunlight from the window hit his light-colored hair, highlighting his delicate profile. With his eyelashes lowered, he did not look nearly as sharp or aggressive as he used to. Perhaps it was due to his differentiation into an Omega, but Lin Yan’s skin had become fairer lately, and his overall aura had softened significantly.
The Chinese teacher finally announced the number they all wanted to know. “Lin Yan, 92 points.”
At that moment, a “ding” sounded in Lin Yan’s mind. The System announced the rewards for the exam: [Congratulations to the host for meeting the standard in Chinese. If you pass three more subjects, you will earn 30 free points to allocate as you wish, along with the ‘Skimming’ study skill.]
Lin Yan’s lips curved slightly. He put down his pen, stood up slowly, and walked toward the podium. Under the watchful eyes of the entire class, he took his paper and returned to his seat. The class was so stunned that it took a long time for them to recover.
Just as the teacher was about to speak, the classroom erupted into chaos. “What! The school bully passed! He actually passed Chinese!” “This is terrifying. What was his score at the end of freshman year?” “I think it was 29 points.” “Holy crap, that’s an improvement of 63 points?”
Shen Yun tapped the podium to regain some of their attention. The lesson ended in a fever pitch. As soon as the bell rang, the hallway was crowded with students who had participated in the forum bet. While it was noisy outside, the classroom remained strangely quiet.
Lin Yan flicked the score on his paper. From the corner of his eye, he saw Ning Youji. He tilted his mouth in a roguish smile and leaned over, bumping Ning Youji’s arm with his elbow. “By the way,” he said with a laugh, “did you really vote for me to pass everything on the forum?”
Ning Youji did not seem to notice the teasing in his voice. He gave a low “Mm” in response. Lin Yan leaned in closer and smiled. “Don’t be embarrassed. Trusting me isn’t something to be ashamed of. Just remember to vote anonymously next time.”
Ning Youji’s hand holding the pen paused. He looked up, meeting Lin Yan’s mocking light brown eyes. “It’s fine if you didn’t go anonymous,” Lin Yan continued. “I’ll help you slap their faces. Trust your Brother Yan.”
The corners of Ning Youji’s eyes turned up. His tone was lazy. “I only trust myself.”
Lin Yan froze, not quite catching his meaning.
“You are technically my student,” Ning Youji added with a hint of a counter-tease. “I have at least that much confidence in my own abilities.”
Lin Yan stared at him, speechless. All that talking just to praise himself. Damn it, he thought. And here I was feeling a little touched.
The second class was Physics. The Physics teacher followed the Chinese teacher’s lead, handing out papers one by one and leaving Lin Yan’s for last.
The students were losing their patience. “Teacher, can you just be direct? Did you all plan this together?”
The Physics teacher was a tall woman in her forties with fine lines at the corners of her eyes when she smiled. “Since you were all gambling so openly on the forum, you can’t blame us for wanting to build a little suspense.”
The class went quiet. They had not expected the teachers to actually check the forum.
“Alright,” the teacher said with a smile. “To the students who voted for a passing grade in Physics, congratulations on your unexpected windfall. Lin Yan, 68 points.”
Class 7 exploded again. It was another restless lesson. As soon as it ended, students rushed into the hallway to spread the shocking news. Lin Yan kept a straight face, but internally, he was overjoyed. This was the first time in two lifetimes that he had passed an exam, let alone with such a high score.
The darkness in Ning Youji’s eyes deepened. Whatever he was thinking, a faint smile actually appeared on his lips.
The next period was supposed to be History, but since the school had not tested that subject, it was replaced by English. The English teacher once again kept the suspense until the very end. The students of Class 7 were on the verge of a breakdown; their hearts were in their throats with every paper revealed.
The English teacher was the type who loved to give motivational speeches. She said, “I looked at a certain student’s results from last term. I heard he has been studying diligently lately, and he has achieved great results in several subjects in a short amount of time. His English might be slightly less impressive this time, but I hope he continues to work hard.”
Someone finally couldn’t take it anymore. “Teacher, did he fail?” “No way, is his streak going to end halfway?”
The students had forgotten their original intentions. They were no longer watching a bully; they felt like they were watching a child grow up, and they didn’t want to see him stumble. Lin Yan was also nervous because the System had not made an announcement. He looked at the podium.
The English teacher picked up his paper and smiled warmly. “However, he passed. Exactly 90 points. Lin Yan, come and get your paper.”
Lin Yan let out a long breath of relief. On the outside, he maintained his casual, indifferent act. Jiang Xue watched his leader and then looked at Ning Youji with a face full of gratitude. He could not help but marvel at the power of an Alpha and Omega working together.
After the class ended, the room was quiet. The initial excitement had passed, and the students were now beginning to realize the terrifying speed of Lin Yan’s learning. A shared thought began to circulate through the minds of many students.
It was not until the final period, Mathematics, that the class snapped out of their daze. Wang Feng-hai, their homeroom and math teacher, walked in and got straight to the point. “Class 7 has made a great start this year. Our average score is first in the grade. I hope everyone continues to work hard.”
As he spoke, he looked at the window corner and then at the students next to it, nodding with satisfaction. It seemed his decision to form a study group had been correct. He displayed the results on the big screen. To no one’s surprise, Ning Youji was first, maintaining a massive 142-point lead over second place.
Then they saw it: Rank 55, Lin Yan.
There were 60 students in Class 7. In roughly one month, the school bully had surpassed five people. Since Class 7 was the most elite class in the tenth grade, this was a remarkable achievement. Seeing Lin Yan’s math score, the students were even more certain of the suspicion growing in their hearts.
The classroom remained eerily quiet until the end of the lesson. The atmosphere was serious. Lin Yan, as the center of attention, could feel the fundamental shift in how they looked at him. Even though he knew they were doubting him, he did not feel the need to explain.
Several students began to whisper. “Do you think he cheated? This improvement is too scary.” “He must have copied. My Chinese score was only 112 on these school-made questions.” “I heard bullies are obsessed with their reputation. Maybe he didn’t want to lose face because of the bets, so he…”
Jiang Xue couldn’t take it anymore. He slammed his hand on his desk. “Damn it, your mouths are filthy. Is my boss that kind of person? Why are you whining about someone else just because you didn’t do well?”
One student, bolder than the rest, stood up. “If he copied, he should just admit it. Let’s see how he explains himself during the intelligence test.” “Exactly. Let’s see how he copies during the intelligence test. The truth will come out eventually.”
Lin Yan gritted his teeth, his expression darkening. Just as he was about to stand up, the person next to him beat him to it, placing a book on the desk with a thud. The sound was not loud, but it was enough to silence the room. Everyone turned to look at the back row.
Ning Youji lazily lifted his eyelids. He looked at Lin Yan and spoke clearly, his voice audible to everyone. “Teacher Wang asked me to keep an eye on you. Don’t relax just because the exams are over. I’m going to your dorm tonight to explain some problems. Make sure you finish your work.”
Lin Yan froze. He had not expected Ning Youji to say that. After a moment, he played along. “Oh.”
Ning Youji reached out and patted his head. “Didn’t you say you were hungry? After you eat, come back and organize the mistakes on your papers.”
Under the stunned gaze of the entire class, the two youths walked out of the classroom together. The students looked at each other, their suspicions instantly quelled by the reality of the situation.
