- Chapter 6 - Come, Let Us Continue
As the intelligence test approached, a tense atmosphere settled over the entire school. With the school-wide examinations scheduled for the following week, and featuring original questions created by the faculty, students who usually relied on last-minute cramming were racing against time.
During evening self-study at No. 1 High, there were usually no subject teachers present, only patrolling supervisors who glanced in occasionally. The classroom for Class 7 was eerily quiet. In the back row, a youth sat with his eyelashes cast downward. The light flowed over his profile, making his serious and obedient expression look unexpectedly handsome.
Ning Youji returned with a math paper and was met with this scene, which he felt reluctant to disturb. Lin Yan was clutching his exercise book, unable to solve a problem despite thinking about it for a long time. He wanted to ask the System, but the System was already so frustrated by his slow progress that it had retreated into silence.
Ning Youji took his seat. Lin Yan turned his gaze toward his desk mate. After a moment of hesitation and a nervous bite of his lip, he finally looked at Ning Youji for help. “Hey, let’s officially start our study group.”
Ning Youji tilted his head, his gaze landing on the dimple on Lin Yan’s cheek. He nodded without expression. Having received a positive response, Lin Yan let out a sigh of relief.
“This problem, and this one too.” Lin Yan naturally pushed the exercise book toward him, his previous awkwardness completely gone. “How exactly do you do these? I clearly followed the formulas in the textbook.” His voice carried a hint of annoyance. “But I’ve used up half a notebook of scratch paper and still can’t figure it out. Is this book playing with me?”
As he leaned closer, a faint scent of magnolia drifted over. It was so subtle that only Ning Youji could smell it. Ning Youji took the pen and looked down at the problems. Upon seeing Lin Yan’s solving process and those crooked auxiliary lines, his voice turned low and unreadable. “Your ideas are quite… unique.”
Lin Yan: “…”
“The way you drew these auxiliary lines is also quite artistic.”
Lin Yan pursed his lips and endured it for a second. “Ning Youji, can you please speak properly?”
Seeing him bristle, Ning Youji could not help but let a slight smile play on his lips. Lin Yan’s face darkened. “You’re laughing? What are you laughing at?”
The youth’s face flushed with anger, but he suppressed it, remembering that he was the one asking for help. Ning Youji pulled back his smile and stopped teasing him. He picked up the pen and began writing a formula in the exercise book.
Halfway through, Lin Yan’s eyes lit up. He reached out to stop Ning Youji and took the book back. “I get it now! I’ll calculate it!”
Ning Youji paused and asked, “Do you really get it?”
“I’ve got it!” Lin Yan replied without looking up.
A moment later, Lin Yan leaned over confidently and slapped the book down in front of him. “Look, is this how you do it?”
Looking into Lin Yan’s light-colored eyes, Ning Youji felt a surge of unexpected confidence in him. He looked down at the problem, and his hand holding the pen froze. Seeing this, Lin Yan felt a wave of unease. “Did I get it wrong?”
Ning Youji looked up and stared at him in silence for a moment. Finally, a soft, raspy laugh escaped his throat. “Actually, I hadn’t finished explaining. I was just giving you a wrong example first so you could learn through trial and error.”
Lin Yan: “…”
Ning Youji saw Lin Yan’s eyelids droop as if he were truly discouraged. He tapped Lin Yan’s head with the tip of his pen. “Actually, one of your auxiliary lines was correct. If you draw it this way and write the equation, the answer comes out.”
Lin Yan leaned over to look, his eyes wide and wary. “This isn’t another wrong example, is it?”
Ning Youji froze for a second and then laughed softly. “No.”
Only then did Lin Yan study the exercise book carefully, turning to ask Ning Youji whenever he encountered something he did not understand. The two in the back row sat close together, prompting whispers and frequent backward glances from the rest of the class.
“Are the two Kings actually discussing studies?” “Heavens, they are sitting so close. From my angle, it looks like they are… kissing!” “The school bully’s studious attitude has lasted quite a while. I wonder what the results will be. Focused men really are the most handsome.” “I wish the school heartthrob would explain problems to me too.”
In the front row, Jiang Xue felt the full weight of his leader’s newfound enthusiasm for learning; Lin Yan was essentially a walking encyclopedia of questions. For some reason, he felt that Ning Youji treated Lin Yan differently, as if they were closer than mere classmates.
When self-study ended, the vice class monitor, Li Xingming, walked over to call Ning Youji. He widened his eyes in disbelief upon seeing the cold Genius explaining problems with such patience. It took him a moment to find his voice. “Brother Ning, are you going back to the dorm?”
Li Xingming was the grandson of the old doctor. Ever since Ning Youji transferred to the school, Li Xingming had been struck by his aura—the feeling of a natural-born king. Because his grandfather was treating Ning Youji, he knew a bit about the boy’s background. The Ning family was one of the most prominent in Nancheng; his father was the CEO of an intelligence company, and his mother was a professor at the country’s top university. He also knew the secret of Ning Youji’s pheromones. No one would guess the pain hidden beneath such a brilliant exterior.
Ning Youji was about to say “You go first,” but Lin Yan beat him to it.
“He isn’t going back yet. He’s with me. I’ll walk him back later, don’t worry.” Lin Yan turned back to the book, pointing at a problem impatiently. “Come on, let’s continue.”
Ning Youji’s hand holding the pen paused. He looked at the youth’s profile with dark eyes and curled his lips, his tone carrying a faint trace of teasing. “Fine, let us continue.”
Lin Yan: “…”
Those words sounded strangely off. He looked up in surprise and met Ning Youji’s slightly curved eyes. A faint scent of sandalwood drifted through the air. Lin Yan felt as if his body were paralyzed, and his mind went blank for a second.
Li Xingming stood by and watched the two lock eyes. He gave a puzzled “Oh.”
Lin Yan quickly looked away, his nerves on edge. He was incredibly sensitive to Ning Youji’s scent. Is this really what it feels like for an Omega to be around an Alpha? he wondered, feeling the urge to curse.
Li Xingming walked to the door and looked back at them once more. Was this really the same “God Ning” who usually kept everyone at a distance? The tutoring session did not end until 10:30 PM.
On the way back to the dorms, Lin Yan looked toward Ning Youji. His voice carried a hint of embarrassment but mostly gratitude. “I might have to bother you for a while longer. But don’t worry, I won’t let your efforts go to waste. I’ll give you a promise: as long as it’s something I can do, I will fulfill it.”
Today, Lin Yan had finally experienced the true strength of a top student. Although he had the System, the teaching methods were completely different. Ning Youji’s methods were simple and easy to grasp, making them perfect for someone starting from zero.
In the flickering light of the streetlamps, Ning Youji’s dark eyes moved slightly. After a silence, he looked at Lin Yan intently and asked in a low voice, “Any request at all?”
“Yes,” Lin Yan said. “A gentleman’s word is his bond!”
Ning Youji nodded, unable to resist teasing him. “Is your memory any good?”
“I won’t forget!” Lin Yan replied, rolling his eyes. “You…” He turned and unexpectedly met Ning Youji’s gaze. Ning Youji’s eyes were deeper than the night, as if they were trying to pull him in.
Lin Yan looked away. He felt as if he had caught a glimpse of something in those dark eyes, but it vanished before he could grasp it. Ning Youji looked down and walked ahead. Seeing that Lin Yan hadn’t followed, he turned back. “Aren’t you coming?”
Lin Yan snapped out of it and followed, catching up to walk beside him. He stole a glance at Ning Youji. Under the streetlights, the boy’s profile was sharp, possessing a maturity beyond his years yet retaining a hint of youthfulness. He felt that Ning Youji was a person with a story. As the night wind blew, Lin Yan looked away. Story or secret, it had nothing to do with him.
Back in the dorm, Lin Yan finished his shower. The System’s silence ended, and it came online to post the day’s progress.
[Host: Lin Yan] [Focus: 16 | Memory: 24 | Observation: 19 | Reasoning: 21 | Imagination: 22] [Study Methods: 7] [Free Points: 18] [Total Intelligence: 120 (Intermediate)] [Brain Development: 88% (Unused)]
Lin Yan rolled around on his bed in excitement. He was now a person with 120 intelligence. He took a deep breath to calm down and asked the System, “Where should I add the free points for next week’s exam?”
“You can add them to reasoning and memory,” the System replied.
[Free Points: 18 (-18)] [Memory: 24 (+9) | Reasoning: 21 (+9)]
Since his rebirth, this had been the most exhausting period of his life, but it was worth it. As his excitement faded, he stared at the ceiling. Memories of his past life surfaced, and his smile dimmed. He knew this level of intelligence was still not enough. To protect the people he loved, he had to work even harder. He would not let history repeat itself.
The following week, Lin Yan was so active he practically stuck himself to Ning Youji.
On the day of the exam, the entire school followed formal procedures: one person per desk, with seats arranged according to the previous term’s results. Lin Yan walked toward the very last classroom with his pen. The first subject was Mathematics.
In the final exam hall, the people and the seats hadn’t changed since the first monthly exam of freshman year. Lin Yan took his seat at the very back. The student in front of him was one of his followers, who turned around and asked with a grin, “Brother Yan, how confident are you about this exam? Which subject can you pass?”
Lin Yan looked at him suspiciously. “Is the school forum gossiping about me again?” Jiang Xue told him every day that the whole grade was making fun of his studying on the forum, but Lin Yan ignored them. Learning was his own business; his rebirth had taught him that much.
The boy gave a sheepish laugh. “Hehe, Brother Yan, just tell me which subject you’re most confident in. I’m betting everything I have. Next month’s internet fees depend on you!”
Lin Yan gave a proud smile and a definitive answer. “I’ll pass every subject.”
The boy froze. Realizing what was said, he immediately began to flatter him. “Brother Yan is awesome! Who is our Brother Yan? Of course, he’ll pass! Not only will he pass every subject, he’ll rank first in the grade!”
Lin Yan patted his shoulder in satisfaction, feeling gratified by his trust. The boy turned back, pulled out his phone, and sent a message to the group chat: It’s over, it’s over. Brother Yan has been driven crazy by studying! He actually thinks he can pass everything!
After the morning exam, most students checked the forum to discuss how many subjects the school bully would pass. The polls were heavily biased; while Lin Yan’s followers shouted that he was awesome, they rationally chose the “fail everything” option.
50L: “Passing Math currently has the most votes! I’m praying for the boss!”
51L: “To be honest, I don’t think he’ll pass a single one. These school-made exams are incredibly difficult.”
55L: “Real-time poll update: Fail everything – 256; Math – 129; Chinese – 84; English – 70; Pass everything – 0…”
60L: “Not a single person chose ‘Pass everything.’ Hahaha, poor bully.”
Li Xingming showed his phone to Ning Youji. “Look at the forum. They’ve even made a poll about the bully’s grades. By the way, how has he been doing? Can he pass Math? I put a bet on Math just to give you face.” He laughed. “With so many people participating, not one person chose ‘Pass everything.’ Do they not trust you, or do they not trust him?”
Ning Youji pulled out his phone and opened the forum. Li Xingming leaned over to look, a look of confusion crossing his face. Under his startled gaze, Ning Youji scrolled to the options and clicked: Pass everything.
Li Xingming swore in disbelief. “Damn, Brother Ning, what are you doing! Do you know how much money you’ll lose if he doesn’t pull it off!”
Ning Youji tucked his phone away with a faint smile. The second the vote was cast, the forum exploded.
203L: “Wait! Someone chose ‘Pass everything’!”
204L: “Who is this idiot? Did the guy himself vote?”
205L: “It’s a verified vote. It’s God Ning!”
