- Chapter 24 - Shen Congbai, Stuck Between Two Men
A flash of panic crossed Shen Congbai’s eyes as his hand instinctively covered the microphone. “No… no one. Just a friend.”
But his reaction was too slow; his voice had already traveled to the other end. Feng Yu raised an eyebrow, a flare of jealousy he hadn’t even noticed himself rising in his chest. His voice flowed into Shen Congbai’s ear, bringing a wave of tingling heat. “Heh, a ‘friend’?”
A trace of guilt flickered across Shen Congbai’s face. “No! Don’t misunderstand…”
His words cut off abruptly. In the blink of an eye, Jiang Yan had walked up to him, his arm reaching around Shen Congbai’s side. His lips pressed tightly against Shen Congbai’s flushed right ear as he murmured piteously, “Misunderstand what, Young Master?”
At that exact moment, the phone pressed to Shen Congbai’s left ear emitted a voice: “Misunderstand what, Shen Congbai?”
Shen Congbai was now stuck in a dilemma, unsure of which one to answer first.
He gave a light cough and replied vaguely, “You’ve misunderstood; I was just greeting someone else.”
Feng Yu seemed to accept this explanation, offering a soft, non-committal “Mm.”
Jiang Yan, that madman, was the one who wouldn’t let it go. He continued relentlessly: “Is that so? The Young Master did say he wouldn’t leave me alone and would stay with me for a lifetime.”
He made no effort to lower his voice, allowing it to travel straight through the microphone and into Feng Yu’s ear on the other end.
Jiang Yan intentionally deepened his voice, making it sound intimate and lingering. “Look, the place you bit is still bleeding. You can’t just go running off to find someone else the moment you turn around.”
Shen Congbai closed his eyes, suppressing his shame as he replied, “I know. Just… just get off of me first!”
Feng Yu suddenly spoke: “Jiang Yan?”
Shen Congbai froze. Before he could figure out how to respond, Jiang Yan spoke with feigned surprise: “Feng Yu? So the ‘friend’ the Young Master mentioned was actually you?”
His eyes were curved in a smile, appearing quite familiar. Yet, Shen Congbai felt an inexplicable scent of gunpowder in the air.
Feng Yu let out a cold snort. “I was wondering where Shen Que found a scapegoat. So, it was his own brother.”
Shen Congbai’s heart skipped a beat. Sure enough, Jiang Yan’s body pressed an inch lower, his face hidden in the shadows, his tone dangerous: “Does the Young Master even tell him this?”
“I—”
Feng Yu interrupted him: “Why ask him? You should ask yourself what guilty deeds you’ve done; otherwise, why would no one want anything to do with you?”
Jiang Yan’s expression darkened, clearly stung by the remark. Shen Congbai hurriedly interjected, “I’m suddenly feeling a bit unwell, I’m hanging up.”
Feng Yu called out to him: “Wait.”
Shen Congbai’s finger froze as Feng Yu said, “I’ll come pick you up tomorrow morning. I’ll also take this ‘trouble’ back to Kyoto with us.”
“You’re coming?” Shen Congbai was surprised. “You… you have to be careful. There will be people waiting at the airport to block you.”
Feng Yu let out a low laugh. “Is that so? Who would dare?”
Shen Congbai fell silent. He had almost forgotten Feng Yu’s status; who would be so blind as to touch the only son of the Feng family? “Alright, I’m hanging up now.”
He hung up with a hint of reluctance, only to look up and meet Jiang Yan’s resentful eyes.
“Why is the Young Master always so dishonest? You said you wouldn’t leave me, yet you turn around and chat happily with another man.”
Shen Congbai frowned. “I won’t leave you, but that doesn’t mean I’ll only have you by my side. Haven’t you already driven Shen Que away? Feng Yu has done nothing wrong; don’t go crazy and try to cause trouble for him.”
Jiang Yan’s breath hitched with rage. “How has he done nothing wrong? He already stole you once and still isn’t satisfied actually dreaming of rekindling the old flame with you. That is his greatest sin!”
Slap!
A bright red handprint instantly appeared on his pale face. Shen Congbai said coldly, “Don’t dream that you can use my guilt to imprison me like Shen Que did. Who I date and who I talk to is my freedom. If you aren’t afraid of me dying, then go ahead and act like Shen Que lock me in a ward and let no one see me.”
Jiang Yan’s face turned from green to white. Looking at Shen Congbai’s angry face, he took two deep, forced breaths and squeezed out a smile. “I misspoke just now. Don’t be angry, Young Master.”
Shen Congbai interrupted him: “Stop calling me ‘Young Master.’ I don’t like it.”
This time, Jiang Yan truly felt aggrieved. He crouched by the bed like a large dog, staring at Shen Congbai piteously. “But if I don’t call you ‘Young Master,’ what can I call you?”
A flash of annoyance crossed the boy’s eyes as he replied uncomfortably, “Call me whatever you want; I don’t care.”
“Then can I be like Shen Que and call you Wuwu?”
Shen Congbai’s fingers curled slightly. His eyes lowered, and he didn’t say whether it was okay or not, but his tightly pursed lips betrayed his inner conflict.
Jiang Yan turned to pick up the lukewarm millet porridge from the side. He scooped a spoonful and brought it to Shen Congbai’s lips, sensibly dropping the subject. “Young Master, have some porridge.”
Shen Congbai instinctively opened his mouth and was fed over half a bowl by Jiang Yan before shaking his head while patting his slightly full stomach. “I don’t want any more.”
Jiang Yan glanced at the bowl and coaxed him, “Just two bites left. Have a little more.”
Shen Congbai had already turned his head away, looking like he couldn’t take another bite.
Jiang Yan didn’t push further. He simply tilted his head back and swallowed the rest of the porridge himself. He then coaxed Shen Congbai into eating half a piece of fruit, only stopping with regret once Shen Congbai showed signs of getting angry.
After coaxing Shen Congbai to sleep, he quietly closed the door. The moment he turned around, his gentle expression turned glacial. He said coldly to his subordinate, “Guard this place well. Don’t let anyone near this ward tomorrow.”
His eyes narrowed dangerously as he looked at the bowing subordinate. “Hide well; don’t let the Little Master find out.”
“Yes, sir.”
Having finished, Jiang Yan strode out of the hospital. The darkness, like a gaping ghostly maw, gradually swallowed him up.
The next morning, gray-white wings pierced through the clouds. Falling slowly from hundreds of meters up, the plane brought a roar of machinery.
Feng Yu took off his sunglasses and glanced at the overcast sky before calmly looking at the group of people in front of him.
He scrutinized the leader with interest, raising an eyebrow. “Where is your boss? Tell him to come here.”
“The boss is currently accompanying the Little Master for a meal. He specifically told the brothers to pick up Young Master Feng from his flight.”
As the man finished, the group behind him stepped forward in unison, their faces full of menace.
“Young Master Feng, the boss said he doesn’t want to hurt you. He just wants to have a chat.”
“Pfft.” Feng Yu let out a mocking laugh, looking at them with utter disdain. “What kind of thing is he to think he’s worthy of chatting with me?”
“Get lost.”
“In that case…” The man took a step forward, a hint of ruthlessness in his eyes. “Forgive our rudeness.”
Feng Yu remained perfectly composed, as if he weren’t the one being surrounded. A smile lingered on his lips as he looked down at them, like a lion gazing contemptuously at hyenas coming to beg for food.
“I told you, you aren’t qualified.”
In the next instant, the entire airport was suddenly surrounded by an orderly, disciplined force. The leader of Port A came running over, signaling his subordinates with a glance. “Take them away.”
The leader of the thugs was immediately restrained by the arms. His face turned gray. Feng Yu walked up to him and patted his own untouched collar, whispering:
“Tell your boss: if he wants to see me, brute force alone won’t work. Don’t go making a fool of yourself again.”
