- Chapter 22 - Washing the Tail
Xiao Shuai’s forehead was bruised a dark blue from being struck. Seeing that Song Shidu had stopped beating him, he scrambled toward the door on all fours. He turned back and shouted indignantly, “You just wait!”
Swish! A screwdriver flew through the air and embedded itself firmly into the door.
Had Xiao Shuai not exited just in time, that strike would have surely blinded him.
With the intruder gone, the air fell into a heavy silence. Song Shidu tilted his head back and exhaled a long sigh. The negative emotions surging within him were suddenly interrupted by the chime of his phone.
Jiang Ningxun: “Where did you go? Report in.”
This was followed by a durian emoji.
Song Shidu’s pale fingers hovered over the screen. After a brief pause, a smile tugged at the corners of his mouth, and he quickly typed back: “I am at a different hotel.”
The next second, Jiang Ningxun sent a voice message: “Which little vixen seduced you? Is she prettier than me? More talented? Does her pheromone smell better than mine? Or is she more virtuous? Cough, cough, I mean, you do not need to compare the virtuous part.”
Where was he virtuous? The virtuous one had always been Song Shidu.
Song Shidu replied as he walked toward the exit: “No one in this world can compare to you. You are the most beautiful, the best, and the most virtuous.”
There was no immediate response from the other side.
After a long while, a soft voice message arrived: “As long as you know. Then why are you not back yet?”
Song Shidu reached the roadside quickly, listening to the voice message on repeat as he walked. He wished he could board a rocket and fly back instantly.
Back at the hotel, after seeing no reply, Jiang Ningxun lay in the covers wagging his tail. He stared at the previous conversation with watery eyes. As he looked, his face turned a bright red. He excitedly rolled around the bed several times, nearly falling onto the floor.
He really knows the right things to say.
Once the excitement passed, Jiang Ningxun flipped through his photo album. His fingers moved quickly until he found several photos of Song Shidu. These were the little moments of their lives together: eating cake, afternoon naps, and even a “post-bath” photo.
In the photo, the person was draped loosely in a white bath towel that barely covered the essentials. Glistening water droplets slid down his broad chest, flowing over firm, well-defined abdominal muscles and tracing alluring lines. His skin glowed with a slight flush from the hot water, adding a touch of enchantment.
His wet hair hung messily over his forehead, with a few drops dripping from the tips across his sculpted face. His gaze held a hint of lazy mists, deep and burning, as if it could draw one’s soul inside. The edge of the towel offered a fleeting glimpse of his tight waistline, leaving much to the imagination.
He looked like a beautiful man who had stepped out of a myth, sexy enough to take one’s breath away.
Jiang Ningxun secretly buried his face in the quilt to look, constantly zooming in and out. The more he looked, the more handsome he felt the man was. Why had he never realized his “best brother” was this good-looking during their school days?
Wait, back then he truly treated Song Shidu as a brother. Surely no one would confess to their best brother?
Actually, someone did: Song Shidu.
Just as Jiang Ningxun was about to scroll to other photos, the door suddenly opened.
His instinct to protect himself kicked in. Not realizing he was at the edge of the bed, he started to roll toward the floor. Song Shidu lunged forward and caught the clumsy fox in his arms just in time. Shaken, he asked, “It is only me back. What are you afraid of?”
“Ah.” Jiang Ningxun was held in his arms along with the quilt. The phone, still displaying the post-bath photo, was lying right on the edge of the bed.
Song Shidu’s eyes swept over it instantly.
Jiang Ningxun froze. It was a complete social death scene.
In his haste, he wanted to hide the phone, but then he thought they were basically like an old married couple now, so why be shy? He boldly picked up the phone to show Song Shidu the photo. “Cough. My photography skills are pretty good, right? You looked good after your bath, so I just took a quick shot.”
Song Shidu: “Yes, not bad.”
Seeing him act so indifferently, Jiang Ningxun curled his lip and took the phone back. Had it not been for the red tips of Song Shidu’s ears hidden under his dark hair, he might have actually believed the man did not care.
Song Shidu placed Jiang Ningxun back on the bed and straightened the covers. He remarked casually, “I did not realize you were so interested in my body.”
Jiang Ningxun’s face exploded into a blush as he scrambled for an excuse: “Who is interested! I just, I just had a professional relapse! Someone with your physique can pull off many great clothes. Yes, that is all!”
“Why were you so scared when I came in?”
“I was afraid it was like last night again”
The change in topic was so sudden that Jiang Ningxun blurted it out instinctively. His heart skipped a beat, and his fox ears instantly flattened into airplane ears. Sure enough, the calculating wolf slowly turned his gaze toward him.
“Oh? Did something happen last night?”
Jiang Ningxun attempted to use his tail to flirt his way out of it. It curled around Song Shidu’s chin with a warm, soft, and fragrant touch. He then smiled to change the subject: “Wash my tail for me? Use the new scent I bought, okay?”
The next second, the mischievous tail was caught in Song Shidu’s hand and gripped threateningly.
“Is there anything between us that you cannot say?”
Sensing that Song Shidu was very unhappy, Jiang Ningxun shrunk back and honestly recounted the danger he had faced last night. He wanted to be vague about it, but the wolf would not let him off, using an interrogative manner to draw out the whole story.
After a long while, the room fell into silence.
Jiang Ningxun’s voice was soft: “The biggest loss is that the door is broken. We will have to fix it when we go back”
He received no response. He saw Song Shidu crouching by the bed, cupping fresh water to wash the fox tail. His expression was hard to read.
The sound of splashing water rose again and again. The bright tail became heavy and wet. His movements were gentle and practiced; the rubbing and stroking felt very comfortable. His clean fingertips slid through the fur, moving upward until they lingered near the base of the tail. The stimulation made Jiang Ningxun’s cheeks flush red, and he reached out to stop him. “Cough, cough. A simple wash is enough. I will wash that part myself.”
Song Shidu withdrew his hand and applied fragrant balm to the tail without any abnormal reaction. No reaction was the biggest abnormality of all! He was being far too quiet.
Jiang Ningxun’s tail flicked uncontrollably in the water. He wondered blankly what Song Shidu was thinking. Was he worried?
Finally, Song Shidu spoke: “When we go back, move to a different place with me.”
Jiang Ningxun was shocked: “What? But we rented that place for a long time.”
“The security in that neighborhood is too poor. I do not want to live there anymore. You are coming with me.” Song Shidu slowly raised his eyes. He looked calm, but his tone was very firm: “The moment we return, pack your things. We will find a high-end complex. Furthermore, from now on, I will take you with me every time I go on a business trip.”
“That is too much trouble” Jiang Ningxun disagreed. “Moving is fine, but as your career grows, you will be traveling a lot. If I go with you every day, how am I supposed to work?” He rubbed Song Shidu’s tense cheeks and chuckled: “Relax. Not all bad luck is going to find me. This was just an accident; it will not happen again.”
Song Shidu narrowed his eyes. “By the way, you said someone helped you?”
Jiang Ningxun nodded: “Yes. He was very strange, wrapped up tightly. I do not know who he is.”
“Is that so?” Song Shidu lowered his head, his eyes flickering before he looked up again. “It seems that person knows our address and has been observing us. That is not a good person.”
“Not a good person?” Jiang Ningxun tilted his head. “No bad person would chase away danger just to hurt me. There were two of them, and they had a kitchen knife.”
Seeing Song Shidu still wearing a long face, Jiang Ningxun kissed his upright wolf ear and gave it a little nip with his teeth. “Don’t worry, don’t worry. I will not be so careless in the future.”
After washing the tail, Song Shidu blew it dry with a normal expression. Suddenly, he whispered, “So, why did you not tell me the first time it happened?”
Jiang Ningxun froze. He knew he had not dodged it.
