- Chapter 21 - The Other Side of Song Shidu
At the restaurant, the table was covered with local delicacies from B-City.
Song Shidu acted as if nothing had happened, calmly placing food into Jiang Ningxun’s bowl. Seeing that Jiang Ningxun was still dejected, he spoke up, “What are you thinking about? Eat. Look at how red and swollen your eyes are. You did not cry the whole way here, did you?”
“I did not.”
Jiang Ningxun wiped away the tears welling in the corners of his eyes and chewed on the meat as if venting his frustrations. He enjoyed the feeling of Song Shidu’s hand reaching over to pet his ears. After a long silence, he spoke in a small voice, “This incident will have a huge impact on you, will it not?”
Song Shidu nodded while eating. “Yes. I lost the project this time.”
Jiang Ningxun immediately moved from the opposite side to sit next to him, offering anxious comfort. “It is okay. You are so capable; you do not need to worry about this one time.”
Song Shidu looked at him, his thumb brushing against the corner of Jiang Ningxun’s eye. He said softly, “I am truly fine. But what about you? Did you not sleep at all last night? Your eyes are full of bloodshot lines. Did anything happen while I was away?”
Jiang Ningxun flinched. He thought to himself that Song Shidu was as sharp as ever. He did not want to reveal his ordeal at this moment and add to the stress, so he shook his head. “Nothing happened. I just missed you a lot and had some nightmares.”
Song Shidu put down his chopsticks and pulled him into a hug, releasing a small amount of pheromones to soothe him. “Do not worry. I am right here by your side.”
The scent of green lime was refreshing. Jiang Ningxun breathed it in longingly, and his tail began to wag uncontrollably, instinctively wrapping around Song Shidu’s waist. It was not until Song Shidu’s cheeks grew warm that Jiang Ningxun suddenly realized what he was doing!
He immediately retracted his wayward tail and squeezed it in his arms. Looking at Song Shidu’s normal reaction, he breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed this career setback truly had not caused any psychological damage. He had been worried the whole way, first fearing Song Shidu might get hurt, and second fearing he would be so discouraged that he would never recover.
In the evening, the two changed to a different hotel and arrived at the front desk.
“One room,” they said in unison.
The receptionist replied, “Certainly! Here is your key card.” As they walked away, the receptionist watched them with a knowing smile, thinking they were a perfect match.
Once they reached the room, Jiang Ningxun flopped directly onto the bed, not even wanting to change his clothes. He truly had not slept for a day and a night. Now that Song Shidu was beside him, his defenses crumbled, and exhaustion came rushing in.
Seeing how tired he was, Song Shidu took the initiative to help him undress.
“Mm,” Jiang Ningxun grumbled in dissatisfaction.
“Sleeping in your clothes is uncomfortable. Be good, lift your arms.”
“Okay.”
“Lift your legs.”
“Mm.”
Song Shidu looked after the lazy fox, undressing him until he was only in his undergarments. Holding him felt fragrant and soft. At this moment, he was acting quite properly, simply helping him undress. However, a second later, he pressed Jiang Ningxun down and kissed him.
The hazy sleepiness in Jiang Ningxun’s eyes was partially dispelled. He opened his mouth slightly to reciprocate. After they kissed for a while, he pushed Song Shidu away with reddened eyes. “You are mean. I just want to sleep, yet you keep bothering me.”
“I have not seen you for three days. I missed you too.” Song Shidu held him tightly on the bed and nibbled on the tip of his ear. His hot breath brushed against Jiang Ningxun’s ear as he said, “I was very worried about you traveling all this way. Rest assured, I will give you an explanation.”
Jiang Ningxun’s ears twitched. He blushed and asked, “What explanation? I did not lose anything. By the way, are we not sleeping? Why are you still dressed?”
Song Shidu had no intention of undressing since they entered the room. A dark light flashed in his eyes as he smiled slightly. “I have something to take care of tonight, so I need to go out for a bit. Baby, remember to double lock the door. Do not let any bad people in.”
“Then come back early.” Jiang Ningxun gripped his hand, feeling uneasy.
“Hmm?” Song Shidu narrowed his eyes, keenly sensing the emotion. He leaned down to lock Jiang Ningxun within his gaze. “What is wrong? Ever since you arrived, you have acted as if you are terrified I will leave.”
Jiang Ningxun broke into a cold sweat and stammered, “Oh, it is nothing. It is just that I have never been to this city before, and I only know you.”
“I see.” Song Shidu clearly did not believe him. He wanted to pry further, but after checking his watch, he stood up and straightened his clothes. “I will go out first. I will be back soon.”
“Okay, go ahead.”
Song Shidu opened the door and looked back. “If anything happens, you must call me immediately.”
“Alright, alright!”
The door closed firmly.
The skyscrapers were brightly lit, and the neon and streetlights intertwined into a magnificent web of light. On the streets, vehicles flowed like a river of stars.
In his room, Xiao Shuai was repeatedly adjusting his collar in the mirror and practicing a fake smile. He held contract documents in his hand, clearly preparing for a meeting. He was talking to himself.
“Ahem. Hello everyone, I am Xiao Shuai, a new employee at the company. I will be discussing the cooperation with you today. Hmm? You ask where the person from yesterday went? Ha, that man has poor character; we cannot let him tarnish the company image, so they sent me instead. Trust me! I am more capable of handling this project than he is!”
“Oh! Thank you for the appreciation, Boss. I am not even that excellent. Hahaha, is that so?”
“What?! You agree to the cooperation? Quick, quick, sign it now!”
Xiao Shuai’s voice echoed in the empty room. He was already captivated by his own fantasies. His face was twisted with excitement as if the deed were already done. He checked the time; it was time to depart.
Suddenly, the lights in the room dimmed, plunging it into darkness. Xiao Shuai shuddered in fright. “What is going on? What a terrible hotel!”
There was a soft click. Xiao Shuai spun around. “Who is there?”
In the darkness, a figure stood silently. The person slowly stepped out from the shadows into the moonlight. Xiao Shuai was shocked. “You! Song Shidu? How did you get in here?”
The visitor was indeed Song Shidu. He slowly raised his head, his eerie and gloomy expression making him seem shrouded in a dark mist. He was spinning a screwdriver in his hand, the very tool he had used to short circuit the wiring.
He walked toward Xiao Shuai step by step and gave a low laugh. “I already told everyone at the company that you are an idiot. A self-deceiving waste.”
Xiao Shuai was enraged by the insult. “What are you doing here? What, do you plan to kill me here or something?”
“Why would I kill you?” Song Shidu tilted his head, his wolf-like pupils narrowing. “I want to watch how you ruin a perfectly good hand of cards.”
Hearing this, Xiao Shuai calmed down. He gave a snorting laugh and patted the documents. “You are just jealous. Watch me execute this project. I will do it a thousand times, ten thousand times better than you!”
“It is about time. You should go.”
Xiao Shuai grew angry again. “You are blocking the door! How can I go?”
Song Shidu sneered. “You have the guts to use underhanded methods to replace me, yet you do not even have the courage to walk past me. You waste.”
“Stop calling me a waste! I am not a waste!” Xiao Shuai’s eyes turned red with rage. He remembered how Song Shidu had looked down on him at the company. He stepped forward and growled, “I will prove right now that I am not a waste! Watch me take all the honor you earned at the company. This project today is just the first step!”
He finished speaking and tried to leave. But as he took his first step, Song Shidu’s knee struck him heavily in the stomach.
“Ugh!” Xiao Shuai bent over in pain.
Song Shidu kept his hands in his pockets, his face expressionless as he began to kick Xiao Shuai in the stomach several times. Xiao Shuai curled up on the floor like a shrimp. Lacking the strength to fight back, he could only endure the beating. Finally unable to take it, he pleaded, “Stop! Stop! I am going to die!”
Song Shidu knelt down and grabbed Xiao Shuai’s hair tightly. A fierce light surged in his lupine eyes, and his voice hissed through gritted teeth. “Fine. I will give you this chance. Go. Prove to me what an absolute waste you are.”
As he finished speaking, he slammed Xiao Shuai’s head against the floor.
