- Chapter 15 - Fake Young Master Alpha x Real Young Master Alpha (15)
Birthday?
Pei Yingjue looked at the marked date: October 23rd.
He and Su Yi shared the same birthday.
Pei Yingjue rarely celebrated his birthday. He had stayed in a private orphanage until he was five years old. The orphanage was on the verge of bankruptcy and the meals were watery and bland; birthdays were naturally never observed.
Later, he was adopted, but his adoptive parent was a drunkard who only wanted to exploit government subsidies. Forget a birthday; simply being able to breathe fresh air was considered a blessing on the days that the drunkard drank less. Consequently, to Pei Yingjue, a birthday was merely a row of numbers on an ID card, no more special than a Monday or a Tuesday.
But it was different for Su Yi. He did not want to apply his own bleak standards to Su Yi, yet a proper gift was hard to find.
For an entire week, Pei Yingjue could not make a choice. He felt as though nothing was worthy of Su Yi.
“A gift?” Su Qing looked at the junior student who was so worried that he had specifically sought her help. She could not help but lean her head on her hand and chuckle. “For Su Yi?”
Pei Yingjue avoided Su Qing’s gaze. “Yes.”
“I see.” Su Qing gave a meaningful smile. “A gift for the young master of the Su family is quite difficult to choose. The Su family hosts a birthday gala almost every year. People of status usually send rare items that are hard to find on the market just to save face for the Su family.”
“Just last year, someone took a unique approach and gifted Su Yi an entire horse ranch.”
Pei Yingjue began to mentally calculate his savings. He had not touched a single cent left to him by his biological parents; he did not want it, nor did he need it. Aside from that, he had saved a significant amount from working with Chen Liao in Yue City over the years, and he had received many subsidies and prizes for participating in Morristy Academy projects.
In short, his savings were quite substantial. However, compared to those nobles, it was likely not even worth a grain of rice.
An inexplicable anxiety rose within Pei Yingjue. Would Su Yi truly like the gift he sent?
Seeing his deep contemplation, Su Qing could not help but laugh. “I am just teasing you. As I said before, those are gifts for the young master of the Su family.”
“If you are giving it to Su Yi, anything will do. A gift is about the intent behind it.”
The intent.
Pei Yingjue paused. What came to mind were Su Yi’s beautiful, gem-like eyes.
During this week, Su Yi had been very busy, and so had he. The multi-person project had turned into a two-person effort, leaving Pei Yingjue so busy his feet hardly touched the ground. He had to squeeze out time to pick a gift. Su Yi was responsible for attracting clients and was often busy until late at night before replying to his messages.
It was only by chance that Su Yi had time to visit the dormitory. The cold loneliness of the dorm had returned. By careful count, Su Yi had not eaten dinner at his place for three days.
“Are you two dating?” Su Qing suddenly asked.
Pei Yingjue was startled and shook his head. “No, we are just friends.”
“Friends?” Su Qing spoke meaningfully. “It does not quite look like that. You like him, and he likes you. How are you just friends?”
Pei Yingjue’s hand shook, and water immediately spilled from his cup, landing right on his trousers.
“I will not tell Su Yi,” Su Qing laughed, pulling out a tissue and handing it to him.
Pei Yingjue looked at the offered tissue and then up at Su Qing. He placed the cup on the table and reached out to take the paper.
“Thank you.”
“Su Yi’s family situation is indeed complicated,” Su Qing said comfortingly.
“It is not because of that.” Pei Yingjue wiped carefully, but the trousers remained damp; they could not be wiped clean.
“Then why?” Su Qing asked curiously.
“Because my starting point was not pure.” Pei Yingjue lowered his eyes and threw the crumpled tissue into the trash can. “This kind of thought should not be known by Su Yi.”
Su Qing let out a scoff at his words. Pei Yingjue glanced at her, confused.
“So you have decided not to confess and wait for Su Yi to speak up? Or will you two just stay friends until you eventually watch Su Yi be with someone else?” Su Qing propped her head on her hand and looked at Pei Yingjue.
Pei Yingjue froze. He had never considered that question. He had never imagined Su Yi would like someone else.
He was still young.
Su Qing shook her head, stood up, and patted Pei Yingjue on the shoulder. “I believe Su Yi has the right to know about this.”
Pei Yingjue looked up.
“After all, you like each other. You cannot deprive him of the chance to be with you because of your hang-ups. As for whether your starting point is pure or not, that is not important.”
“What matters is whether Su Yi can accept it.”
“And whether he accepts it or not is for Su Yi to decide. So, leave the choice to him,” Su Qing smiled. “You are so smart when doing experiments, so why are you so stupid about this? Trust him a little more, and trust yourself a little more too.”
Pei Yingjue was pinned to the spot by those words, unable to snap out of it for a long time. Seeing his dazed state, Su Qing felt like an elder for the first time with this person, and she felt much better.
She suddenly slapped the shoulder of the deep-in-thought Pei Yingjue and winked. “Come on. I know a shop with some good things.”
Should he leave everything to Su Yi?
Pei Yingjue rubbed the small white gift box, his thoughts racing.
The doorbell rang.
Pei Yingjue snapped out of it, reached out to hide the gift box in the cabinet, and only after ensuring it would not be seen did he get up to open the door.
When he opened the door, Su Yi was standing there rubbing his hands. Pei Yingjue was momentarily stunned. He remembered Su Yi had messaged saying he would not be back for dinner, yet his body instinctively moved to find slippers for him.
“I am here to deliver an invitation,” Su Yi said quickly. The implication was that he would not be coming inside.
Pei Yingjue paused and frowned slightly. He withdrew his hand and looked at Su Yi. “An invitation?”
“Yes, a birthday invitation,” Su Yi handed it over with a smile. “Everyone else has one.”
“Okay.”
Pei Yingjue reached out to take it, but when he tried to pull it away, it would not budge. He looked up to see Su Yi’s eyes sparkling as he watched him.
“The butler delivered the others,” Su Yi said softly, releasing his grip.
Pei Yingjue looked down at the invitation that had been personally delivered by the host. By carefully rubbing it, he could still feel a bit of lingering warmth. His previous displeasure was dissipated by that one sentence.
“Since you are delivering it, why are you not coming back for dinner tonight?”
“I really wanted to,” Su Yi muttered, his brows drooping. “But the moment I thought about you giving me a gift, I could not help wanting to search your room top to bottom, yet I also really want a surprise.”
“I hate birthdays,” Su Yi grumbled, then suddenly sighed and changed his mind. “Never mind. I should still be thankful for it.”
Pei Yingjue did not understand. “Thankful for what?”
“Thankful that it gives Student Pei a legitimate reason to give me a gift.” Su Yi put his hands together in a prayer-like gesture.
Pei Yingjue’s heart softened. “Even without it, I would still give you one.”
Su Yi gave a faint smile. “I know. Student Xiao Ying is a good person.”
It is not because I am a good person. Pei Yingjue looked at Su Yi silently.
“Are you not coming in?” Pei Yingjue looked at his reddened ears.
Su Yi shook his head. “If I do, all my previous efforts will go to waste.”
Seeing how much he was looking forward to it, Pei Yingjue suddenly felt unsure. “What if I give you something you do not like?”
“I am already very happy just because you are coming,” Su Yi said seriously.
With the invitation delivered, Su Yi’s mission was complete, but he did not leave immediately. Pei Yingjue did not rush him either, and the two just stood there. They allowed the cold wind to wrap around them until Su Yi sneezed.
“Are you really not coming in?” Pei Yingjue asked with a frown.
“No!” Su Yi said firmly.
Pei Yingjue looked at him helplessly. “Then, see you tomorrow night?”
“See you tomorrow night.”
Su Yi hurried away again. Only after his figure had turned into a black dot and disappeared did Pei Yingjue close the door. The room felt several degrees colder.
Pei Yingjue leaned against the handle, his head resting on the cold door. His gland pulsed with heat. He took a deep breath and finally made up his mind. He did not want to wait another second.
“Is an invitation worth you delivering it in person?”
The car door opened, and Hai Tingyan looked at Su Yi, whose ears were red from the cold. His expression was particularly sour. Su Yi closed the car door and took a long breath only after feeling the warmth inside.
The temperature in this world was dropping too fast. Two weeks ago, it was still t-shirt weather; now, wearing a down jacket would not be overkill.
“The butler could not have delivered this one,” Su Yi replied after catching his breath.
Hai Tingyan gave a small click of his tongue. “Why does your brother insist on having him come to the birthday gala? He is an outsider.”
Hearing this, Su Yi laughed softly. “By your logic, there are very few people at the gala who are not outsiders.”
Hai Tingyan was choked by the response. “Did your brother discover something?”
Su Yi did not answer.
“He really discovered it?!” Hai Tingyan was shocked, but he soon realized that with Brother Su’s methods, it would be stranger if he did not know. “Then what do you plan to do? Are you going to break it off with him?”
“If I break it off, my gland will never recover.” Su Yi looked out the car window. “If I change the marking partner halfway through treatment, my gland might reject the new marker. In serious cases, it could be completely destroyed, and I would never have pheromones again for the rest of my life.”
Hai Tingyan’s heart sank. “Really?”
“Of course,” Su Yi replied. He was not lying to Hai Tingyan. Changing treatment partners halfway through carried a huge risk; once rejection occurred, his gland would essentially be useless.
“Then what do you plan to do?” Hai Tingyan asked.
“Confession brings leniency; resistance brings severity,” Su Yi shrugged.
“That is true. Brother Su is quite good to you. Besides, the two of you only have a temporary contract; you can part ways after the treatment is finished,” Hai Tingyan said, observing Su Yi from the corner of his eye.
The youth looked out the window, his expression calm.
“Yes.”
