- Chapter 14 - The Fake Young Master Alpha x The Real Young Master Alpha (14)
“Miss Xu.”
Su Yi pushed open the door to the private room. Xu Jiao was already seated; she glanced at him and nodded as he entered. Xu Jiao, the sole heir of the Xu family and the only child of her generation, was an S-rank Omega.
Only the two of them were in the room. Judging by Xu Jiao’s expression, it was clear she had not come of her own free will. Su Yi sat across from her. Waiters served the dishes one by one.
“Miss Xu,” Su Yi spoke for the second time.
“I do not discuss business while eating. We will talk outside later,” Xu Jiao said, glancing at a waiter nearby.
Su Yi raised an eyebrow. It seemed this was not just a lunch for the two of them.
“Very well.”
There was no need to force pleasantries. By the end of the meal, both found the experience quite agreeable. After finishing, Su Yi and Xu Jiao walked to a nearby park before stopping.
“To make a long story short, I want to make a deal with you,” Xu Jiao said, dropping her cold mask and offering Su Yi a faint smile.
“I am listening.”
Xu Jiao continued, “I do not reject the idea of a political marriage. After all, it is not a bad thing for our families. Trading marriage for power is a fair exchange for me. But I hate being manipulated.” Xu Jiao’s gaze turned cold, revealing her resentment at being forced to attend. “I know you do not want this marriage either.”
Su Yi raised an eyebrow.
Xu Jiao glanced at him. “You entered the Alliance competition. Word has already spread through the inner circles. I need a fake engagement with you. My father managed to find an illegitimate child from somewhere, a useless Beta who actually thinks he can get a piece of the Xu family. It has turned the house into a disgusting mess.”
“Miss Xu, surely you could handle that without the Su family’s involvement,” Su Yi remarked.
After all, even with an illegitimate child, Xu Jiao remained the sole heir. Xu Jiao did not deny it. “But there are always elders in the family looking to stir up trouble.”
Su Yi understood. She wanted to use this to assert her dominance and warn others.
“Su Yi cannot look after you for everything, can he? If he knew, you would not have shown up here at noon.” Xu Jiao looked at Su Yi. “You are being controlled, and I need a way to strike back. Why do we not join forces?”
Xu Jiao was right. Su Yi did not deny it. “What are the terms of the deal?”
“I need you and me to maintain an ambiguous public image. The media will report heavily on us during this time, and when necessary, I will directly leak the news of our engagement,” Xu Jiao explained. “In return, I can provide you with any help you need during this period. Anything at all.”
“Anything” was a bold claim, but Xu Jiao indeed had the capability to back it up. This was not a bad deal for Su Yi. It would appease his parents and provide a fallback plan; his brother might not support the family once he found out about Su Yi’s partnership with Pei Yingjue.
“You do not need to answer right away. In two weeks, I will be visiting your school for an exchange program. If you agree to the deal, I want you to be my campus guide. I hope we can become partners,” Xu Jiao smiled.
After she left, Su Yi raised an eyebrow. “Quite a good deal.”
Just then, his phone buzzed.
[Su Yi (Brother): Su Yi, come home for your birthday. Bring your friend along.] [Pei Yingjue: I am at the lab. I have something today; I might be back late.]
This meeting was swift and secretive; neither your brother nor your contract partner caught wind of it. Facing both invitations, you will:
-
- Attend, keep it a secret B. Attend, be honest C. Do not attend
Su Yi clicked his tongue. His brother and his father were truly cut from the same cloth; they spoke in a way that left no room for refusal. With everything happening at once, he needed to make Pei Yingjue fall for him faster.
Su Yi smiled at Pei Yingjue’s message. What a coward. He wanted Su Yi to find him but was too shy to say it directly. He might as well give him a little push. Humming softly, Su Yi hailed a car.
“To the nearest pharmacy.”
He needed to mask the scent on him first.
“Are you not going to tell him?” 777 asked.
Su Yi shrugged. “No need. I can handle it myself.”
“That jade… it should have been bought by my grandfather. He went off to enjoy his retirement two years ago. It happens to be his eightieth birthday in two weeks; I will ask him for you. I am not sure if he still remembers it,” Su Qing said, putting the note away with an apologetic smile. “Years ago, he loved buying things just to give them away, calling it ‘making friends.’ The money he threw away could have built another lab building!”
Pei Yingjue gave a knowing smile and said earnestly, “Thank you, Senior. I am already very grateful that you are willing to help.”
Su Qing waved her hand dismissively. “It is just a question. No need for gratitude. Why use such formal language between us?”
“You are still helping me,” Pei Yingjue insisted.
“If we are going to keep track like that, I still have not finished paying back the favors I owe you,” Su Qing joked.
Pei Yingjue did not argue. He and Su Qing met by chance. At the time, Su Qing was nearing graduation and intended to stay at the school for research, but her family wanted her to take over the family business. Su Qing refused and had a major falling out with them. In retaliation, her family withdrew all personnel and resources from her lab.
Pei Yingjue was the first to join her lab. The reason was simple: Pei Yingjue was genuinely interested in Su Qing’s research direction. Coincidentally, it was near the announcement of the first phase of results. Su Qing did not hide Pei Yingjue’s contribution at all, listing his name alongside her own. Only after that did other special admission students gain the courage to join.
“After graduation, do you want to join my lab?” Su Qing offered an olive branch. She had asked him more than once over the past year.
“Thank you, Senior, but your lab does not exactly lack people right now,” Pei Yingjue replied.
Su Qing waved her hand. “Alright, I knew I could not convince you. A talent like you is someone every lab wants to poach. I know you are in the league competition; I do not know what you are planning, but if you need a venue, I can provide one.”
Pei Yingjue looked up.
“Of course, it is not free. You have to mentor a few students for me,” Su Qing added. “They are new; some have not even reached enrollment age. They are all quite unique. I need you to teach them the ropes.”
By the end, Su Qing sounded quite exhausted. Pei Yingjue knew the difficulty of training newcomers. He nodded. “Then I will not refuse.”
“That is a huge help,” Su Qing breathed a sigh of relief. “Alright, it is getting late. I need to check on the lab, otherwise I would treat you to a meal to show my thanks.” Su Qing stood up and patted Pei Yingjue on the shoulder. She thought highly of this junior.
“I should head out too.” Pei Yingjue’s eyes softened slightly at a thought.
Su Qing noticed the change in his expression. “Something at the lab?”
Pei Yingjue shook his head. “No, a private matter.”
Su Qing smiled. This was rare. She had known Pei Yingjue for three years and knew he was usually like a block of ice, devoid of emotion, let alone private matters.
They took the elevator down together and walked through the clean corridor. At the main entrance, Pei Yingjue looked through the glass doors and saw someone standing under a streetlamp. As dusk fell, Su Yi stood there in a thin coat, wearing a mask halfway and looking down at his phone. He had an aura that warned others not to approach.
Pei Yingjue’s footsteps faltered. He realized in hindsight that he had told Su Yi his location out of a selfish impulse. But he had not expected Su Yi to actually come looking for him. When did he arrive? How long had he been waiting? Was he cold?
Pei Yingjue did not dare linger; he pushed open the door and walked out. Su Qing watched his noticeably quickened pace and looked up. It seemed the private matter had come looking for him.
Hearing footsteps, Su Yi looked up and saw Pei Yingjue approaching. He turned off his phone and his eyes crinkled into a smile. “I thought I might have come too late and you had already left.”
Pei Yingjue felt a pang in his chest. “Have you been waiting long?”
“Yes,” Su Yi said. “I have been waiting a very long time, Classmate Pei.”
Even though he knew Su Yi was doing it on purpose, Pei Yingjue still felt bad. “Sorry, my fault.” Pei Yingjue reached out and touched the back of Su Yi’s hand. It was very cold. He really had been waiting a long time.
“I am just teasing you; you are so silly,” Su Yi laughed. He looked behind Pei Yingjue. “And who is this?”
Pei Yingjue realized he had come out with Su Qing. “This is Su Qing, three years our senior. She is a researcher at the school.”
“Hello, Senior,” Su Yi immediately dropped his playful act and greeted her politely.
“This is Su Yi,” Pei Yingjue paused. For a moment, he could not find a word to define their relationship. “I am his neighbor. I often go over to his place to scavenge food,” Su Yi spoke up naturally.
Su Qing looked at Su Yi, then at Pei Yingjue, and suddenly understood the subtle tension. “I see. That is a very good relationship. I rarely saw Xiao Pei hanging out with anyone before, let alone letting them scavenge food.”
“Really?” Su Yi looked at Pei Yingjue in surprise.
“Yes,” Pei Yingjue felt a tightness in his chest but gave a small nod.
“By the way, are you the young master from the Su family?” Su Qing asked carefully.
Su Yi nodded with a faint smile. “I would prefer it if you just called me by my name, Senior.”
Su Qing laughed knowingly. “I also prefer being called Senior. Well, I will not bother you two any longer; I have things to do.”
“Goodbye, Senior.” “Bye-bye, Senior!”
Su Yi waved at Su Qing, then turned back to find Pei Yingjue staring at him silently.
“Let’s go.”
With that, Pei Yingjue turned around. Su Yi followed, but he stayed two steps behind. They walked a distance like this when Pei Yingjue suddenly stopped without warning.
“What is wrong?” Su Yi asked.
“You…” Pei Yingjue turned and saw Su Yi’s confused expression. He frowned and let out a long breath. “Nothing. I thought you had not kept up.”
Ultimately, he was overthinking. As Pei Yingjue turned back, Su Yi hurried two steps to walk beside him.
“Are you angry?” Su Yi asked.
“No,” Pei Yingjue said immediately.
“Lying is not a good habit.”
Pei Yingjue fell silent.
“Is it because I said we were just neighbors scavenging for food?” Su Yi asked seriously.
Pei Yingjue glanced at him with a complex mood. He did not know. He knew he had been acting strangely lately. During the day, everything was fine, but as soon as night fell and he saw Su Yi, his heart would race. He was becoming very strange. He seemed to have fallen for Su Yi.
Su Yi tilted his head and joked, “So, when will Classmate Pei be willing to give me an official title? Something other than a neighbor who scavenges for food?”
Pei Yingjue’s breath hitched. He almost instinctively wanted to respond, but he quickly bit his tongue. He could not respond like this. Was a liking born from marking actually love? Should he really reveal such impure feelings to Su Yi? It would not be responsible.
As Pei Yingjue remained silent, the light in Su Yi’s eyes dimmed. Soon, he forced a smile. “Alright, I am just teasing. I remember our agreement. I am a man of my word.”
The agreement… Pei Yingjue became even more silent. The agreement he had written himself had already been broken on a spiritual level because of his own selfishness. He felt despicable.
“Hey!”
Those slender hands waved in front of Pei Yingjue’s eyes again. He snapped back to reality.
“Are you very tired? You were not even listening to me,” Su Yi said.
“Sorry, I was thinking about something,” Pei Yingjue paused. “Can you say it again?”
Su Yi repeated himself: “I asked you, it is my birthday next week. Do you want to come to my birthday party?”
