- Chapter 14 - I Will Not Let This Go
Jiang Zui’s first reaction was to argue.
“That is impossible.” His face was frozen, and he could only repeat that one sentence like a form of self-comfort. “It is impossible. Pei Youting, it is impossible.”
The second female lead, unaware of the internal details, did not understand why he was reacting this way. She answered nonchalantly, “Why is it impossible? Among those upper-class people, how many are actually good? Pei Youting is considered one of the most heartless. When things are good, he is all passion and sweetness, but once he loses interest, he kicks you aside.”
As the saying goes, three people make a tiger, and public opinion can melt even gold.
No matter how much Jiang Zui trusted and loved Pei Youting, hearing such colorful rumors for the second time caused his resolve to waver. However, he still did not want to speculate about the other man that way; he kept thinking it was a misunderstanding or a mistake.
Yet, he could not help but be drained by it. He was out of form during filming that day. After the lead actress left, the remaining cast members, no matter how much they looked down on Kevin in private, felt forced to flatter him.
Kevin enjoyed it immensely. When he was in a good mood, he would order food to be delivered to the set for everyone.
On this day, using his connection to Pei Youting again, he ordered a massive spread of customized dishes from a Michelin-starred restaurant. Since those who eat another person’s food must keep their mouths shut, the staff and actors flattered Kevin as they ate, making him feel very satisfied.
Kevin’s assistant brought a dish to Jiang Zui. Jiang Zui already had a bad impression of Kevin, and because of the words from the second female lead, he felt a strong repulsion toward him. He had no appetite at all. He simply smiled at the assistant and politely declined, saying he was not hungry. Everything was observed by Kevin, who was standing nearby.
Kevin walked through the crowd and stood before Jiang Zui, speaking in a haughty tone, “Hey!”
Jiang Zui looked up at him, confused.
Kevin looked at Jiang Zui and pinched his nose with disdain. “You must be Jiang Zui. I do not know where you jumped out from. What is this? Do you start acting like a big shot just because you have a little fame?”
Jiang Zui was at a loss. He thought that although he had declined, he had not been rude. He hurried to clear the air. “No, it is not like that. I just, I just have no appetite. I did not want to waste it; it is better to let someone else eat it.”
But what use was his explanation? Kevin had found him an eyesore for more than a day or two. Since the previous lead actress left, Jiang Zui was the only one in the crew who did not flatter him. Every day, Jiang Zui sat there flipping through the script, not saying a word like a wooden block, pretending to be noble and serious.
Kevin wanted to use this opportunity to intimidate him and show him who was the boss. He glared and became even more aggressive. “Who would believe your side of the story? Do you look down on me? Huh? What, are you trying to stand up for the one who left? Hmm?”
Jiang Zui was unable to defend himself. Fortunately, the second female lead saw that the situation was not right and came over to smooth things over. “No, no, Kevin. Actually, Teacher Jiang has been dieting lately, so that is why he is not eating.”
With someone intervening, it was hard to continue the argument. Kevin rolled his eyes and muttered, “And they call him a teacher,” before walking away.
Although the matter was settled, it created a grudge between Jiang Zui and Kevin. Kevin seemed determined to stir up trouble. His target of harassment shifted from the first female lead to Jiang Zui, and he refused to cooperate during their scenes.
Jiang Zui was most serious about acting and could not accept this behavior. He frowned and said to Kevin, “You cannot do this. In this part, the male lead’s emotions are restrained. You cannot act so impulsively.”
Kevin took the opportunity to shove him. With his brows raised and eyes wide, he looked aggressive. “I want to act this way. Do you have a problem with that?”
“But that is not how it is written in the script.” Jiang Zui frowned, wanting to tell him that acting this way would break the immersion, but before he could speak, Kevin cut him off.
“I do not think so,” he snorted. “I am telling you, I will act however I want in this drama. Do you know who is supporting me?”
He spoke with great smugness and pride. “I am telling you, the person behind me is Pei Youting. You better be careful. If I am in a bad mood one day, I will make you.”
The moment that name was spoken, Jiang Zui’s heart seemed to stop. He heard nothing else Kevin said afterward; it all became a whistling wind buzzing past his ears.
“What did you say?” Jiang Zui’s expression was ghastly. At that moment, it felt as if a bucket of cold water had been poured over his head. “What did you say? Pei Youting?”
Kevin, still oblivious, thought he was envious. “Yes. What about it? With someone like you, you have probably never even seen him, right? So you had better be sensible.”
Jiang Zui looked pale. Staring at the gloating Kevin, he wanted nothing more than to rush forward and strangle him.
Heavens, the feeling was like a mistress showing off in front of the legal wife, saying, “We are the true love, so you old hag should get lost.” Jiang Zui felt everything in this world was absurd. The name had been spoken clearly from the other man’s mouth. What else was there to misunderstand?
In an instant, many ignored details became clear in his mind, like Pei Youting’s sudden coldness during this period, the messages that were always replied to after a long delay, and the phone calls that never went through.
Previously, when he was on set, Pei Youting would visit him every few days. But lately, Pei Youting had not even asked which production crew he had joined. He had not thought deeply about any of it; he had assumed Pei Youting was just busy.
Jiang Zui’s heart felt as if it were being twisted with pain. For a moment, he wanted to rush to Pei Youting and demand to know what was going on. Why was he with this Kevin? What was he to Pei Youting then? What did everything they shared during this time count for?
But Jiang Zui endured it. He knew that words were futile in the face of reality. He wanted to see Pei Youting’s actions behind his back with his own eyes. Only then could he give up completely.
A person’s intuition is especially strong when they suspect a partner is cheating. Whether a man or a woman, it is the same. Jiang Zui discovered that within a week, Kevin would always take a day off on Wednesday and hop into a Panamera.
Jiang Zui recognized the person who came to pick him up; he had seen this man a few times. He was one of Pei Youting’s private drivers.
On that day, he also requested leave from the director. He drove his car and quietly followed the vehicle, being careful like a tracking agent in a movie. Jiang Zui was amused by the thought, but the more he laughed, the more bitter he felt.
The Panamera stopped in the underground garage of a five-star hotel. He waited until he saw Kevin get out before following him.
Jiang Zui was fully armed with a scarf, hat, mask, and sunglasses, ensuring that not a single inch of his skin was exposed. To avoid attracting Kevin’s attention, he also hunched his back. Fortunately, there were two strangers in the elevator, and that person was staring at his phone and did not notice him.
The elevator stopped at the VIP floor with a ding. Jiang Zui quietly followed Kevin out. This floor was very large and indeed had two rooms. Jiang Zui hid at the corner and saw Kevin knock on the door to the left.
Then, a hand reached out and wrapped around Kevin’s waist. Jiang Zui stared fixedly at that hand, his heart feeling as if it were being ground into bloody pulp by a thousand knives. How could he not recognize it? That was Pei Youting’s hand! That was Pei Youting’s hand!
The door closed quickly, showing how eager the two of them were. Jiang Zui’s legs felt as if they were made of lead and concrete, yet he still walked forward uncontrollably. He stood at the door and listened to the sounds of passion inside for a long time.
“Ah, Mr. Pei, slower.”
Collision, separation, collision, separation.
What kind of feeling was that? He felt as if he were being cut into a thousand pieces. He was being strangled and could not breathe, as if he were about to suffocate. He was dying. Jiang Zui numbly took off his hat, scarf, and mask. His face was wet with tears that kept flowing into the corners of his mouth.
It was bitter.
When the sound of impact was at its most intense, he suddenly took a deep breath. Then, like a madman, he began to kick, hit, and stomp on the door. The person inside seemed to curse and said, “We do not need room service.”
But Jiang Zui kept kicking the door. He used all his strength, as if trying to vent all his anger and grievances. Finally, the person inside could no longer stand it and came to open the door in extreme rage, muttering, “I am going to have you fired.”
Pei Youting’s words were swallowed back into his stomach when he saw Jiang Zui at the door with bloodshot eyes and a face covered in tears. His eyes widened in disbelief as he looked at the person before him. “Jiang Zui?”
Jiang Zui looked at his face and into his eyes. What a beautiful face, like a perfect marble statue. Those eyes, he had drowned in those eyes countless times. He thought it was love. He thought it was sincere love.
He smiled and then stepped forward. Jiang Zui had no doubt that if he had a knife in his hand right now, he would definitely stab Pei Youting to death. Unfortunately, he was empty-handed. So, he used all his strength and landed a heavy, heavy punch on that perfect face.
One punch, another, and another. He saw blood seeping from the corner of Pei Youting’s mouth as it became bruised and swollen. He was really hitting him with everything he had. But Pei Youting seemed stunned as well, letting him hit him until he was covered in bruises.
The person on the bed, who was barely clothed, let out a sharp scream, but Jiang Zui’s roar was even more deafening.
“You with the surname Pei, I will not let this go!”
