- The Scummy Top Desperately Tries to Win Back His Ex After the Breakup
- Chapter 15 - Plaything
Jiang Zui was a grown man; he was tall, exercised regularly, and possessed the physical strength of someone in excellent shape.
The power he unleashed in his fury was startling. After his initial shock, Pei Youting finally reacted and began to fight back. Men from families like his were professionally trained in combat. Pei Youting’s fighting skills were on par with professional Muay Thai coaches, and he knew human weaknesses by heart. Within a few rounds, he seized the right moment to pin the enraged Jiang Zui down.
Pei Youting’s lip was bruised and swollen, with a trace of blood dripping down. He looked at the man beneath him and hissed in a low, furious voice, “What the hell is wrong with you?”
Jiang Zui sneered, spitting out a glob of blood-streaked saliva. “You have the nerve to ask me that, Pei?” He took a deep breath before screaming hysterically, “What the hell are you doing? What are you doing behind my back with someone else?”
Watching him slowly calm down, Pei Youting released his grip. He looked at Jiang Zui, who was still full of accusations, and rubbed his temples with irritation. “Damn it, this is even more dramatic than I expected.”
Jiang Zui did not understand. “What?”
Pei Youting let out a cold laugh. He finally shed his mask of gentleness in front of Jiang Zui, revealing his ruthless inner nature. He looked down at Jiang Zui sitting on the floor, his well-shaped lips curling as he spoke. “You seem to have misunderstood something.”
He crouched down, lifting Jiang Zui’s face with his index finger to look him over. Then, suppressing his anger, he mocked him. “What about me? Why are you so angry? No way, you actually thought we were in a relationship? Is that why you are here questioning me?”
“Listen, Jiang, I do like you, but do not push your luck just because I gave you some attention.”
Slap!
Pei Youting’s face was knocked to the side. He stared blankly at the patterns on the floor, only regaining his senses after a long moment. This time, he was truly livid. He raised his hand to strike back. “You mother,”
His movement froze the instant his eyes met Jiang Zui’s. Those eyes were filled with disbelief and, disappointment? It was like a sword pinning Pei Youting to the spot.
Jiang Zui’s heart twisted with agony. Those words were like knives carving into his soul, like a giant hammer shattering his rage and accusations into dust, leaving only a hollow panic. He laughed at himself, reaching up to wipe the tear tracks from the corners of his eyes.
Perhaps because his laughing and crying was so absurd, Pei Youting remained stunned. The room fell silent for a moment, and at that precise time, the only other door on this floor opened.
It was Xu Xizhe, newly awake with a few stray hairs sticking up on his head.
Xu Xizhe felt the world was becoming far too absurd. He had just returned from filming in Berlin and was dealing with jet lag; he had only checked into this nearby suite because he was exhausted. He had not expected that shortly after falling asleep, the room next door would erupt into a noisy confrontation that sounded like someone catching a cheating lover.
Driven by the noise, he had intended to see what was happening outside. As it turned out, he would have been better off staying inside. Xu Xizhe truly regretted having such a strong sense of curiosity for the first time in his life.
With a semi-stranger present and Pei Youting’s words hanging in the air, Jiang Zui felt utterly ridiculous. He forced himself up from the floor, refusing to give Pei Youting even a single glance. He grabbed his coat and prepared to leave.
Xu Xizhe was also embarrassed. He looked at Pei Youting with his bleeding lip and swollen face, then at the despondent Jiang Zui. What else was there to understand? Damn it all, he guessed it was a cheating scandal, but he never expected it to be these two.
Jiang Zui’s face was pale, and as he turned his back, tears fell like beads. Pei Youting could not see them, but Xu Xizhe saw them clearly. For some reason, it felt like a piece of his heart had been plucked out; it was terribly uncomfortable.
He closed his door to avoid further awkwardness. Pei Youting watched Jiang Zui leave and sat back on the bed, his mind in a state of chaos.
Kevin, who had witnessed everything, was speechless. He truly did not know, nor could he have guessed, that Jiang Zui and Pei Youting had this kind of connection. What was even more shocking was that Jiang Zui actually had the nerve to be so bold.
And Pei Youting had actually let him do it without fighting back? He was so angry he wanted to slap him, yet he had not even followed through?
Pei Youting sat on the sofa with his head down for a long while before finally looking up, exhausted. The gloom in his eyes terrified Kevin.
“Get out,” he said coldly.
Kevin’s heart nearly jumped out of his throat. He scrambled into his clothes and fled in a panic, losing all the arrogance he had when he first arrived.
Pei Youting and Jiang Zui were finished, completely finished.
This was the man Jiang Zui had truly loved. Sitting in his car, he stared at the steering wheel and sobbed uncontrollably. His tears would not stop, and the pain made it feel as though he were suffocating. Pei Youting’s words kept circling in his head: “You actually thought we were in a relationship?”
You actually thought we were in a relationship? That light, mocking sentence felt like a ton of weight crashing down, crushing the air out of him. In an instant, all his illusions were shattered.
From beginning to end, he was no different from Kevin, the person he looked down upon.
They were all just playthings. It was too pathetic; the Pei Youting he loved so deeply only saw him as a toy.
It began to rain on the way back, pattering against the car windows. The car was stuck in traffic, and he was so lost in thought that he did not even notice when the light turned red. The sharp sound of the horn behind him made him feel like he had hit rock bottom.
He returned to the film set with red eyes. He looked so haggard and wretched that it startled the director. His acting that evening was completely off, and the following days were the same. It was a level of performance he had never hit before; he could not seem to snap out of it. Every time he thought of Pei Youting, his heart ached.
Kevin stopped coming. Rumor in the industry was that he had been completely blacklisted for offending his benefactor. However, the investment was not withdrawn. Everyone was happy, and they brought in a male actor with a good reputation to restart filming.
Jiang Zui looked terrifying during those days. Everyone feared he would collapse on set or simply stop breathing the next moment. He was already restricting his diet for his role.
Lately, he had no appetite and rarely ate. Standing at over 1.8 meters, he was reduced to a mere skeleton. His face was pale, and the dark circles under his eyes required the makeup artist to spend a great deal of time covering them every day.
His assistant, Xiao Lin, asked him, “Brother Jiang, did you go through a breakup?”
Jiang Zui froze for a moment, then gave a self-deprecating smile and nodded. “I suppose so.”
Even though he and Pei Youting had never truly been in a relationship.
Xiao Lin looked at him with a mix of disbelief and pity. “No way? Brother Jiang, someone as handsome as you can still experience a breakup?”
“Then that person has no taste. Do not be too sad; there are plenty of fish in the sea. There are definitely many people better than your ex. Maybe someone sees that you are single now and is planning to pursue you.”
Jiang Zui smiled, taking her words as comfort. But truly moving on was easier said than done. Pei Youting was his first love; for so many years, he had only held Pei Youting in his heart. If he had never had him, it would be one thing, but,
But those sweet memories had actually happened.
Now everything was over, and no matter how much it hurt, it would not change anything.
On the other hand, Xu Xizhe had been in a state of confusion ever since witnessing that absurd scene. Jiang Zui’s tearful face from that day kept surfacing in his mind, completely beyond his control. Every time he thought of it, his heart ached.
He could not quite define his attitude toward Jiang Zui. As an actor, Jiang Zui was undoubtedly excellent, so he admired him. But what about the man himself?
He recalled that indefinable heartbeat he felt during filming, the uncontrollable urge to invite him out again and again. Previously, he felt frustrated and regretful just thinking that Jiang Zui belonged to Pei Youting and was off-limits. But now, he seemed to understand a little.
He was interested in Jiang Zui, perhaps interested in a relationship? Jiang Zui and Pei Youting had split up; did that not leave the perfect opportunity for him to step in? He did not want to let the prize slip away now that it was within reach.
Jiang Zui knew he could not simply indulge in the pain of a breakup. He was trying his best to adjust his state of mind. These days were difficult, but fortunately, there were a few pieces of good news that brought him comfort:
First, a matching heart source had been found for Lin Yan. Based on her physical condition, the surgery could be scheduled as early as three months from now.
Second, his manager received news from Xu Xizhe. He had a new big-budget film and was inviting Jiang Zui to play an important role.
It was a role that, when Jiang Zui received the script, left him a bit dazed.
A charming yet naturally wicked, male fox spirit?
