The Scumbag Attackers Regretted It Deeply After My Death - Chapter 42
“Teacher, please don’t say another word. You’ve just finished a long surgery and look exhausted. Whatever needs to be said can wait until we get back.”
Adams froze for a moment. He had expected the woman to reproach him, but to his surprise, Anna Yao’s first words were filled with concern for his health. A wave of warmth surged through his heart. He nodded slightly and reached out to hold her cold fingertips.
“Alright, let’s head back.”
Anna Yao pursed her lips and did not pull her hand away from her teacher’s. Instead of letting Peter help, she personally supported the elderly man as they walked out of the villa.
Peter paused in his tracks and did not follow immediately. Instead, he looked up nervously at the Alpha. Jiang Nian’an remained silent, simply offering him a nod. Peter seemed to breathe a sigh of relief before turning to chase after the others.
“Teacher, Junior Sister, wait for me!” Peter shouted as he hurried to catch up.
Once the three of them had left the villa, Jiang Nian’an’s tightly strung nerves finally relaxed. Her body swayed slightly, and she quickly grabbed the railing to steady herself. Her cold, stern face took on a sickly, pale hue.
“CEO!”
Rapid footsteps echoed behind her. Shen Mengjin rushed to Jiang Nian’an’s side, supporting the Alpha’s arm with deep concern etched between her brows.
“CEO, can you hold on? I’ll drive you to the hospital right now!”
“No need.”
Jiang Nian’an waved her hand, her breath weak. “It’s an old problem; I’ll be fine once I take some medicine. Help me back to my room to rest. It’s late—just find a guest room and stay the night.”
“But…” Shen Mengjin hesitated, deeply worried about Jiang Nian’an.
Jiang Nian’an shot her a cool glance, and Shen Mengjin immediately swallowed her words.
After helping Jiang Nian’an back to the master bedroom, the Alpha leaned weakly against the headboard. Shen Mengjin hurriedly rummaged through her briefcase, found a medicine bottle, and poured three white tablets into her palm.
“There’s no water. CEO, please wait a moment. I’ll go downstairs and find you some bottled water…”
Hearing Shen Mengjin’s frantic voice, Jiang Nian’an’s face remained pale, and a thin layer of cold sweat beaded on her forehead. She struggled to lift her heavy eyelids; her usually indifferent and deep dark eyes were now hollow and numb. She reached out toward Shen Mengjin, her voice low and raspy.
“No need… give them to me.”
Shen Mengjin paused. Seeing that the Alpha seemed to be in intense pain, she had no choice but to place the tablets in Jiang Nian’an’s palm. She watched as Jiang Nian’an swallowed the pills dry with great difficulty. After taking the medicine, the Alpha slowly closed her eyes, her breathing extremely faint.
“Are you sure we shouldn’t go to the hospital?”
Shen Mengjin was truly afraid of an accident. Although this wasn’t the first time the illness had flared up, Jiang Nian’an had been preoccupied with Yao Guangming’s affairs for the past two days. She hadn’t slept since yesterday and had barely eaten; whenever her stomach hurt, she would just drink hot water.
While people often say hot water is a cure-all, Jiang Nian’an’s condition was no ordinary ailment. It had been diagnosed just last month: early-stage gastric cancer!
Fortunately, it was caught early. The doctor said there was a chance for a full recovery, provided she maintained a regular sleep schedule, avoided staying up late, and abstained from alcohol.
Initially, Jiang Nian’an had strictly followed the doctor’s orders, but over the last two days, she had…
Thinking about how her boss had eaten nothing all day, Shen Mengjin couldn’t help but worry. “CEO, how about I go to the kitchen and make you some porridge? Having a little something is better than nothing.”
Waves of piercing pain shot through her stomach. Jiang Nian’an was physically and mentally exhausted, ravaged by the cancer. All she wanted was to sleep.
The Alpha’s eyes remained closed. her thick eyelashes fluttered slightly. Her lips were pale, making her look like a flower battered by the wind or a sleeping swan—a sight that invoked pity.
“No, I don’t want to eat anything.”
“CEO!” Shen Mengjin grew frantic. “If you keep this up, I’m going to call the Old Madam!”
At those words, Jiang Nian’an snapped her eyes open and stared directly at Shen Mengjin. Her voice was no longer weak.
“You wouldn’t dare!”
Even though she was ill, the Alpha’s icy aura was more imposing than ever. Clearly, the “Old Madam” was a line Shen Mengjin was not supposed to cross.
As the Alpha’s pressure weighed down on her, Shen Mengjin’s courage faltered, and she swallowed nervously. However, she remained defiant. “If you don’t eat, I will tell the Old Madam you are sick!”
On this matter, Shen Mengjin was not backing down.
Jiang Nian’an frowned and stared at Shen Mengjin for a while. She knew the assistant was worried about her, but she didn’t think her illness was that serious. After all, the doctor mentioned a cure was possible, and she had been diligent with her medicine until these past two days.
“Fine, whatever you want.”
Jiang Nian’an retracted her aura and waved her hand. She was in too much pain to argue. She carefully lay down, curled into a ball facing away from Shen Mengjin, and said, “Make a bit more porridge. Keep an eye on Mr. Yao; give him some when he wakes up.”
Relieved that the Alpha had finally relented, Shen Mengjin let out a long breath. “Understood. Please get some rest.”
She stepped forward to pull the neatly folded quilt over Jiang Nian’an. Once finished, she quietly slipped out of the room.
The night was thick, and a crescent moon hung high in the sky. A black Volkswagen sped down the highway.
Inside the car, Anna Yao sat in the passenger seat in silence. She leaned her head toward the window, staring outside. She hadn’t spoken a word since getting into the car half an hour ago.
Yao Ling had never seen Anna this quiet. As she drove, she stole glances at her, feeling that the atmosphere was unnervingly heavy. She thought Anna would be happy now that Adams and Peter were safe, but for some reason, the woman seemed deeply depressed.
How could Anna Yao be happy?
She had guarded against everything and even warned her teacher that the person Jiang Nian’an wanted to save was her enemy. Yet, she hadn’t accounted for her “pig teammate,” Peter!
She reflected on why she had failed. It wasn’t because her opponent was too strong, but because her teammate was too foolish.
At the thought, Anna felt incredibly frustrated. she shot a gloomy look at Peter, who was snoring in the back seat, and sighed heavily. If Peter hadn’t led Yao Ling out through the back door of the hotpot restaurant, they wouldn’t have been caught by Jiang Nian’an’s men. Furthermore, her teacher wouldn’t have been coerced into performing surgery on Yao Guangming just because Peter was being held captive.
She had a perfect chance to eliminate Yao Guangming once and for all, but because of Peter’s blunders, she had been outmaneuvered by Jiang Nian’an. How could she not be angry?
Anna took a deep breath and closed her eyes, trying to comfort herself. Forget it. I’m just stuck with a foolish senior. This missed opportunity was a pity, but there would be more chances in the future.
In her heart, she knew that with her current strength, fighting the Yao family—one of the four great families of the capital—was like hitting a rock with an egg. Yao Guangming’s illness was the best chance to dismantle the Yao empire. If she had done nothing, he likely would have remained a vegetable for life.
Moreover, she knew the Yao Group and the Jiang Financial Group had a multi-million dollar project pending. If Yao Guangming were out of the picture, the rest of the Yao family wouldn’t be able to handle it. The resulting breach of contract and double compensation would have bankrupted them. She wouldn’t even have had to lift a finger.
Then, she could have dealt with Yao Zhenzhen however she pleased. But she failed. Anna felt the sting of losing such a golden opportunity.
The car arrived at the hotel in silence. Yao Ling turned and said, “Sir, we’ve reached the hotel.”
Adams opened his eyes groggily. He hadn’t been sleeping deeply. He nodded, woke the snoring Peter, and stepped out of the car.
The spring nights in the capital were still chilly. As the night wind brushed his face, Peter jerked awake. Adams, clutching his briefcase, looked at Anna, who remained motionless in the passenger seat. Seeing she had no intention of getting out, he hesitated before speaking softly.
“Anna, are you busy? Can we talk?”
How did it feel for her most respected teacher to save the enemy who had ruined her and her mother’s lives? The Omega’s feelings were complicated.
Originally, Anna wanted to turn a blind eye and pretend nothing had happened so they could go back to their normal student-teacher relationship. But after what just transpired, she needed a cooling-off period.
Anna lifted her eyelids and met Adams’ sincere gaze. After a moment of hesitation, she nodded and stepped out of the car.
“Then Sister Anna, I’ll wait for you in the car,” Yao Ling said.
Anna shook her head. Yao Ling had been running around with her all day. Even though the girl’s phone was on silent, Anna could hear it vibrating constantly. Yao Ling was newly married; her family was likely worried.
“Go home. My car is parked over there; I’ll drive myself back later. Don’t forget tomorrow morning…”
Anna stopped herself, remembering Adams and Peter were standing right there. Yao Ling nodded understandingly. “Don’t worry, Sister. I definitely won’t be late tomorrow!”
“Good. Drive safely and text me when you get home.”
“Will do!”
After Yao Ling drove away, Anna turned her gaze toward the hesitant Adams. She could already guess what he wanted to say and sighed softly.
“Teacher, I don’t blame you. I just find the outcome hard to accept right now. I need some time to process it.”
Adams was stunned. He frowned and asked tentatively, “Anna, did you already know the person Miss Jiang wanted to save was your father?”
Anna’s expression remained neutral. At this point, there was no reason to deny it. “Yes, I knew it was him.”
Adams looked at her in shock. “Then why did you tell me he was your enemy? Isn’t he… isn’t he your biological father?!”
