- Chapter 43 - Your things are good, so they’re mine
In Adams’s impression, Anna Yao was a kind, pure, and good child. Whether it was her studies or her work, she was incredibly diligent. Back in the country of Ma, even when she could barely afford to feed herself, she would still buy food for stray cats.
How could such a kind Omega become so cold and heartless? What on earth had happened to her?
Anna Yao felt a bit of a headache coming on. She didn’t know how to explain her relationship with Guangming Yao to Adams. She raised a hand to rub her furrowed brows and said in a heavy voice, “Professor, you should be aware of my family background. I was abandoned in Country M at the age of eighteen by my so-called biological father. All my expenses during school were supported by my scholarships and part-time jobs. I didn’t blame him before; I thought he was just training my independence.”
“But after graduating and returning home, I slowly learned the truth about some things… regarding the truth of my mother’s death.”
Adams’s heart skipped a beat. He guessed, “It couldn’t… have something to do with your father, could it?”
Anna’s face turned cold. She pursed her lips, her expression dead serious. “Although I cannot deny that Guangming Yao is my biological father, he truly doesn’t deserve the title!”
She wasn’t lying. In her past life, on the day she committed suicide, she had personally witnessed Xiulan Zheng go to her mother’s grave and reveal the truth of her death. Even if the validity of those words still needed investigation, Anna had always felt her mother’s death was unusual; she just hadn’t thought in that direction before.
Hearing this, Adams’s expression grew solemn. No wonder Anna had tried to stop him from saving Guangming Yao. But he…
Thinking of this, Adams felt a surge of guilt toward Anna. He said apologetically, “I’m sorry, Anna. I really didn’t know there was such a blood feud between you and your… between you and Guangming Yao. I… I didn’t do it on purpose. Anna, I’m sorry.”
Anna shook her head. She hadn’t confessed to Adams to make him feel indebted. She simply didn’t want the teacher she respected most to think she was an unfilial descendant. Others could misunderstand her, but Adams could not—which is why she explained.
“It’s all in the past. It’s late; you two should head up and rest. I need to get back as well.”
These words were like a night breeze, blowing away the clouds in Adams’s heart, yet they couldn’t smooth over his inner guilt.
Adams nodded, still looking remorseful. After a few more pleasantries, not wanting Anna to stay out too late, he headed upstairs with Peter.
Back in the room, Adams sat heavily on the sofa, head bowed in silence. Even after learning the truth, he still felt he had wronged Anna. His mind was like a sea lashed by a storm, unable to find peace.
Beside him, Peter let out a heavy sigh and tried to console him. “Professor, there’s no need for this. We just did a bad thing with good intentions. If we had known beforehand about the grudge between Anna and that old fellow Guangming Yao, we certainly wouldn’t have saved him.”
That was true enough, but Adams wasn’t entirely certain. If they hadn’t chosen to perform the surgery on Guangming Yao at that moment, what would have happened to him and Peter? He hadn’t performed the surgery solely because he heard the man was Anna’s father; there were other complex reasons involved.
Precisely because of this, Adams felt he had saved a piece of scum who didn’t deserve to be a parent, making him feel even more apologetic toward Anna.
Adams shook his head and sighed, his voice full of helplessness. “What’s done is done. We can only compensate Anna in other ways.”
Peter nodded, agreeing with his teacher’s thought.
By the time Anna returned to the hotel where the crew was staying, it was late at night. Director Zou had booked her the most luxurious presidential suite in the hotel. However, since the hotel was only three stars, the presidential suite wasn’t as grand as a five-star equivalent.
Anna wasn’t picky; she only required the room to be clean and tidy. The ninth floor was occupied by the important female supporting cast of the drama. She took the elevator to the ninth floor and walked through the long corridor, where she could faintly hear the sound of an argument coming from further down.
Anna wasn’t one to meddle in others’ business and walked straight toward her room at the end of the hall. But as she drew closer, she realized the argument was happening right in front of her door. Two women and a man were blocking her entrance. The man was the Assistant Director, Chengfeng Xie; she didn’t know the two women, though they looked somewhat familiar.
Assistant Director Chengfeng Xie looked at the women with an expression of distress. When his peripheral vision caught Anna, his eyes lit up as if he’d seen a savior. He waved at Anna as she approached.
“Teacher Yao!”
Anna nodded to him as a greeting. The two young women, who looked like they were looking for trouble, turned around at the sound. One woman with long hair looked her up and down with an unfriendly gaze.
“So you’re the female lead, Anna Yao?”
Anna stood her ground before them. Seeing the woman’s hostile attitude, she raised an eyebrow and ignored her, turning instead to the assistant director.
“What are you all arguing about in front of my door?”
Xie Chengfeng forced a smile, looking embarrassed as he introduced them. “Teacher Yao, let me introduce you. This is the second female lead, Teacher Guan Luoxue, and that is her assistant.”
“It’s like this… Teacher Guan says her room faces north, so it’s dark and damp. She’s uncomfortable and prone to allergies, so she wants to switch rooms with you…”
Before Xie Chengfeng could finish, Anna frowned and interrupted coldly, “Switch rooms?”
She shot a contemptuous glance at Guan Luoxue and let out a light snort. “As far as I know, only the Director and the primary leads are entitled to the top-tier presidential suites.”
The implication was clear: Guan Luoxue was only the second lead. Why did she think she was entitled to snatch the presidential suite meant for the female lead? Did she think she was worthy?
Guan Luoxue’s face darkened. She crossed her arms and narrowed her eyes, showing no intention of backing down. “So, what Miss Yao is saying is that you want me to work while I’m sick?”
Anna: “?”
She suspected this woman had a mental problem. Whether she worked while sick was her own business; it wasn’t as if Anna was forcing her to.
Xie Chengfeng whispered a reminder from the side: “The thing is… Teacher Guan wants to stay on the top floor, but your room is the only one on this floor that faces south…”
“Oh. I’m not switching.”
Anna finally understood what Xie Chengfeng meant. This second lead, Guan Luoxue, wanted a south-facing room, and Anna’s happened to be the only one. Anna couldn’t help but roll her eyes. She wasn’t the woman’s mother; why should she coddle her?
With that, Anna walked toward the door, took out her key card, and entered. Just as Guan Luoxue tried to follow her in, the door slammed shut with a “Bang!”, nearly hitting her nose!
Guan Luoxue: “…”
She exploded in a fit of rage like a provoked Pekingese. She pounded heavily on the door and shouted at the top of her lungs, “Anna Yao, get out here!”
“What is wrong with you? You clearly know I get allergies in damp rooms. Are you refusing to switch because you’re trying to stop me from attending tomorrow’s opening ceremony on purpose?!”
Xie Chengfeng had a massive headache. Remembering that Director Zou had specifically instructed her to look after Anna before leaving, she tried to persuade Guan with difficulty: “Teacher Guan, your words are a bit extreme… Look, it’s eleven at night. Shouting in the corridor disturbs everyone’s rest. How about this… my room is on the sixth floor, it also faces south and hasn’t been used yet. If you don’t mind, we can switch.”
“The sixth floor?” Guan Luoxue’s shrill, caustic voice cut through the air like a sharp dagger. “The sixth floor is full of either male actors or Alphas. Assistant Director, do you think it’s appropriate for an Omega like me to live there? What if someone dislikes me and spreads rumors about me living on the same floor as male actors? What about my reputation? How will others look at me? Can your production crew take responsibility for that?”
“This…”
Xie Chengfeng couldn’t help but think to himself that Guan Luoxue actually had some self-awareness—she knew she had offended a lot of people.
However, faced with Guan Luoxue’s overbearing attitude and pressing words, cold sweat broke out on Xie Chengfeng’s forehead. He didn’t know how to refute her, feeling like an antelope cornered by a hyena, trembling.
Guan Luoxue was a veteran A-list actress, known as the “Professional Second Lead.” She had been in the industry for ten years and was a household name. Xie Chengfeng was just a newly promoted assistant director and naturally didn’t dare to offend her to her face.
Inside the room, Anna sat on the edge of the bed, searching for Guan Luoxue’s information on her phone. After reading the data, she remembered who Guan Luoxue was. The woman was thirty-two years old and had entered the entertainment industry at twenty-two. Over ten years of grinding, she frequently played the “vicious female antagonist” roles that made audiences grit their teeth. Given Guan’s slightly sharp and thin features, she indeed suited the villainous roles perfectly.
No wonder she looked familiar. It turned out Anna had seen her playing a villain on TV when she was a child. She vaguely remembered it was an old period drama where Guan Luoxue played a maid who intentionally drove a wedge between the Emperor and a high-ranking Consort. She had taken advantage of the Emperor being drunk to climb into his bed and constantly tripped up her former mistress. Seeing this as a child, Anna had wanted to crawl into the TV and beat up that ungrateful, white-eyed wolf herself!
