- Chapter 6 - The Cicada's Call in Early Autumn
Cleaning up is not an easy task. The notice was for a meeting at 12:30 PM the next day. After lunch, with twenty minutes to spare, Xu Qingfeng headed to the club room.
The club was located on the second floor at the other end of the teaching block’s connecting corridor. The sun was still blazing, but she was in high spirits.
People she usually only saw every few days, she could now talk to regularly.
What a beautiful day!
Xu Qingfeng thought she must be the first one to arrive, that no one could be more proactive than her.
Opening the club room door, she found a slender figure in the main hall standing on a stool, peeling the protective film off the new blackboard.
It was early autumn, and the cicadas were still chirping. Trees shielded the window next to the blackboard, making the room cool, yet a few rays of sunshine escaped, shining on the girl’s gentle face. Strands of hair escaping her headband were lifted by the breeze, only for the girl to tuck them back neatly.
It was bright and quiet, making time seem reluctant to move.
Xu Qingfeng held her posture, momentarily forgetting to close the door.
The girl on the stool noticed her and turned around.
“Qingfeng, it’s you,” Xia Yiqiu said, her tone delighted.
“Come here quickly and help me peel this off. This stuff is so hard to tear.”
Her voice held a hint of frustration, like a kitten whining, which made the listener’s heart flutter.
“Okay.” Xu Qingfeng hurried over, her movements reminiscent of someone being called out by an instructor.
The door, relieved of her grip, instantly slammed shut with a clank. The sequence of actions was like a pause in an anime transition.
Xia Yiqiu couldn’t help but chuckle at her silly, stunned demeanor. “What is up with this person?”
Not controlling the strength in her hand properly, the stool tilted, and she began to fall.
The scream didn’t escape her throat, and the expected fall didn’t materialize. Instead, she was caught in a warm embrace.
In the classroom, empty except for them, the tall girl wrapped her arms around the other girl’s waist. If a camera were to capture this moment, it would be unforgettable, but the two people in the frame clearly hadn’t fully processed what happened.
Xia Yiqiu’s ears flushed pink. Her feet were still on the stool, and her arms were wrapped around the other person’s neck.
This is a bit awkward. Why is this girl hugging me so tightly? Should I push her away?
I can’t push her away. Maybe I’ll just keep hugging her for a bit.
The little bookworm is quite good-looking.
No harm done.
Xu Qingfeng caught the scent of the girl’s hair.
She felt a moment of resistance that quickly faded.
She smells so good.
What am I doing?
I’m holding Yiqiu.
This isn’t right.
She’ll hate it. This is crossing a line.
Xu Qingfeng felt a little wronged, but had no reason to be.
Reluctantly, she came to her senses and quickly helped the person in her arms stand upright.
“Yiqiu, are you okay?” Xu Qingfeng’s expression was normal, showing no sign of tension or shyness.
In fact, she was always like this, which is why others only called her a bookworm. She didn’t mind it; she really did enjoy reading.
However, Xia Yiqiu didn’t see it that way.
Sure enough, this person has no reaction at all.
A straight girl. The person I like is a straight girl.
The pink flush on her ears disappeared before the other girl could notice.
“I’m fine, thank you, Qingfeng.” Her tone was a bit dejected, but a standard smile appeared on her face.
“That’s good.” It’s a relief Yiqiu didn’t misunderstand.
There was still an awkward atmosphere between the two. Xu Qingfeng also brought a stool and started peeling. They didn’t speak to each other, but the silence was unusually harmonious.
With two people, the work progressed much faster. Whenever Xia Yiqiu’s arm brushed against hers, Xu Qingfeng felt a slight flutter in her heart. Time was passing, and she seriously cherished the moments they spent together, which were rare.
However, this happiness was quickly interrupted by her childhood friend.
Clang!
“Qingfeng, Yiqiu, you guys are so early!” Gao Zhi’s loud voice echoed in the empty hall, revealing the original noisy nature of summer.
“Wow, peeling film!”
“Heavy work, I’m perfect for it.”
Gao Zhi excitedly ran over, giving them no time to refuse.
She moved her stool between Xu Qingfeng and Xia Yiqiu, stood between the two, and with a forceful pull, tore off the remaining protective film, stunning everyone.
Gao Zhi looked triumphant.
“See, when Little Gao shows up, I’m worth two people!”
“No need to thank me. What are you two still standing there for?” she said, waving her arms.
“Come down, it’s dangerous! Don’t fall.”
Hearing this, the two people on the stools suddenly recalled the recent scene and quietly stepped down, their ears red.
Gao Zhi found it strange. “Why are your faces so red? It seems a bit hot today. I’m going to turn on the air conditioner. You’ll cool down soon.”
She acted quickly.
Xia Yiqiu opened her chat with Li Tian.
Xia Yiqiu: Tiantian, your Gao Le Gao is a bit clueless.
Due to the time difference, there was no reply. Xia Yiqiu put her phone away after typing.
Xu Qingfeng sighed silently, looking at Gao Zhi.
Sigh.
But it’s not good to have it too cold this time of year.
“Gao Zhi, don’t set the temperature too low, you’ll catch a cold,” Xu Qingfeng called out to Gao Zhi.
“Got it, Mama Xu,” Gao Zhi teased.
“Mama Xu?” Xia Yiqiu asked Xu Qingfeng with a confused look.
Ah, Gao Zhi, my nemesis!
So embarrassing!
“Gao Zhi, how many times have I told you not to call me that?” Xu Qingfeng, whose face was usually calm, was unusually agitated now, pointing at the returning Gao Zhi.
“Yiqiu, let me tell you,” Gao Zhi said conspiratorially.
“Xu Qingfeng has been like this since she was a child, a little adult who manages everything according to rules, constantly nagging and not acting like a kid.”
“So I gave her this nickname specifically to counter her, hahahahahaha. Isn’t that right, Mama Xu?” Gao Zhi laughed triumphantly again.
“Is that so? That’s quite cute,” Xia Yiqiu said, as if imagining a young Xu Qingfeng, a quiet, small child who was so reliable and serious.
“Cute? You’re the only one who’d say that,” Gao Zhi didn’t agree with the description.
Xu Qingfeng, however, was overjoyed by the compliment.
The bright sunshine was always so warm.
She called me cute. It was a word she had never heard since childhood. People usually praised her for being smart or calm.
I love it. Her eyes watched Xia Yiqiu, filled with a look of satisfied delight.
She looked just like a puppy seeking praise.
Gao Zhi internally rolled her eyes, thinking Xu Qingfeng had gone crazy with that weird expression.
More people gradually arrived. They stood in formation according to their departments. Xia Yiqiu stood in front, distributing tasks, and Xu Qingfeng stood beside her.
The club members below couldn’t help but feel emotional.
What a sight!
We are so lucky!
Because of this, a private chat group was born within the Psychological Club, specifically without the President and Vice President.
It was created by a student who truly liked the two of them and enjoyed ‘shipping’ people. They named the chat group “Xu You Qiu Feng Support Group” (A pun on their names meaning “Permit the Autumn Breeze”).
It must be said that the student’s naming skills were quite good.
As for Gao Zhi, who was reluctantly added, she could only loudly complain in her heart.
Xu Qingfeng, she’s a straight girl!
Wake up, everyone!!!
However, she didn’t dare to speak up in the group. The people in the group wrote fanfiction vividly and were discussing it so fiercely that she didn’t dare utter any dissenting words.
She would be ganged up on.
You can’t mess with people who ship couples!
Within a day, the two of them even got nicknames: one was ‘Qing Dog’ and the other ‘Xia Cat.’
Gao Zhi really wanted to complain to the people involved, and she really wanted to laugh, but she couldn’t. The group announcement clearly stated that all discussions were strictly internal and could not be shared outside.
Out of sight, out of mind. Block.
And so, Gao Zhi missed yet another opportunity to observe her childhood friend’s romantic life.
