- Chapter 7 - Cleaning, Starting the Action
With the tasks distributed, everyone followed their group to start working: moving chairs, sweeping the floor, wiping the windows, and so on.
“Qingfeng, come here quickly.” Gao Zhi shouted loudly, his tone somewhat excited.
Xu Qingfeng put down her broom and looked up at the prop display room where Gao Zhi was located. Xia Yiqiu, on the other side of the hall, also noticed the shift in the other person’s gaze.
Maybe I should go take a look.
Thinking this, Xu Qingfeng walked to the door of the display room. Gao Zhi spoke to a humanoid statue, “Qingfeng, I didn’t expect this to be here. It was quite scary when the lights weren’t on just now.”
Xu Qingfeng wasn’t moved. “Oh, really? Then hurry up and wipe it clean.”
“I’m leaving. We have a lot of work here.” Those props would keep Gao Zhi busy for a long time.
“Don’t go! My dear Qingfeng, please help me.”
“There are so many things here; I might not finish before class starts.” Gao Zhi grabbed Xu Qingfeng’s arms and shook her, his movements rather comical.
“I want to chat with Sweetheart later,” Gao Zhi winked at Xu Qingfeng.
I feel like throwing up again.
Why do I have a childhood friend like this?
Xu Qingfeng felt hurt. She really wanted to take a picture and show it to his Sweetheart.
Show-offs die quickly!
Besides, you’re still on probation.
“Fine.”
Not wanting to see Gao Zhi’s antics anymore, Xu Qingfeng agreed to help him clean the display room.
Her mood was neither good nor bad right now.
“Wow, there are so many things here. I’ll come and help too.”
Xu Qingfeng looked up. It was Xia Yiqiu. She was leaning against the door frame, a smile on her face, her tone lively and spirited.
“That would be great!” Xu Qingfeng quickly replied. Her mood instantly brightened.
As for working, I love it the most.
“Woohoo, this is awesome!” Gao Zhi cheered.
“Action time, Special Forces Trio!” With Gao Zhi’s words, the cleaning officially began.
Despite having three people, they were the last to finish. Everyone else had completed their tasks and left long ago. It was still twenty minutes until the afternoon class.
“Thanks to my two saviors for your help. I’m going to buy you some drinks.”
“Bye-bye.” Gao Zhi said and then ran off to the small shop.
Looking at Xia Yiqiu, Xu Qingfeng felt a little nervous. It was just the two of them again.
“Yiqiu, the Top 100 Ranking has been updated. Do you want to go take a look?” Xu Qingfeng pointed to the Top 100 Ranking board on the first floor opposite the club entrance.
She wasn’t curious about her own score, but she always felt happy whenever she saw Xia Yiqiu, who was also ranked first on the other Science stream board. Their names were both at the top.
“Sure,” Xia Yiqiu replied. Although it wasn’t a surprise, she always checked to see if she had improved compared to the last time.
When the two walked downstairs, quite a few students had already gathered in front of the board to check the rankings, as class was about to start soon.
“Look quickly! I knew the first place would still be those two.” A student tapped her friend’s shoulder.
The friend replied, “You should be used to it. After all, it’s been the two of them for a whole year.”
“I’m so envious! They’re pretty and smart. They’re my idols.” The first girl said again.
Having heard such compliments many times, neither of them felt embarrassed.
Xu Qingfeng took a couple more glances at the two names in parallel first place, separated by one board.
Not bad.
“725… Ah, my Chinese deducted five more points than last time. I’m falling behind,” Xia Yiqiu’s voice came through.
Fortunately, her voice wasn’t too loud, otherwise, such humblebragging would surely cause public outrage.
“Qingfeng, your Chinese score has always stayed above 140. I’m so jealous. Chinese is really a headache.”
“I wish there was some way to improve.” Xia Yiqiu wasn’t looking at Xu Qingfeng, seemingly just mentioning it casually.
Always?
Did Yiqiu used to pay attention to my score?
Then she heard the next sentence.
Xu Qingfeng scratched her head. “It’s nothing, you’re already doing great.”
“Maybe I should ask Liu Xiao from my class for some tips,” Xia Yiqiu’s tone was light, giving the impression of certainty mixed with hesitation.
Liu Xiao was indeed the second-ranked student in the Science stream. Her total score was ten points lower than Xia Yiqiu’s, but her Chinese single subject score was always stable above 140.
Go find Liu Xiao? Why not find me?
You can ask me.
Xia Yiqiu continued, “Hmm, I could invite her for tutoring on the weekend.”
Weekend? Invite?
Xu Qingfeng’s mind stopped working. She accidentally blurted out her thoughts.
“Why go the long way around? My Chinese is pretty good too.”
Oops, why did I say that?
Xia Yiqiu’s eyes sparkled. “Really, Qingfeng? Then, little teacher, let’s set a time for tutoring!”
Xu Qingfeng was stunned by the pleasant surprise.
This good?
“Um, okay.”
On the way back to her classroom, Xu Qingfeng felt light-headed, still floating.
Just now, Yiqiu said she would invite me to her house for tutoring this Saturday.
Go to her house… it feels like a dream.
Dreams weren’t that real. In reality, Xia Yiqiu discussed many times and locations with her, such as the library, a cafe, or Xu Qingfeng’s house. At the last location—Xia Yiqiu’s house—Xu Qingfeng didn’t hesitate.
“No need to go to all that trouble. Let’s just go to your house.”
The person on the other end was visibly surprised for a second.
“Alright, Qingfeng. Then it’s settled. Come to my place this Saturday afternoon. I’ll text you the address later.”
Saying that, she waved her hand and walked into her classroom.
Gao Zhi’s voice came from behind.
“Blockhead, what are you spacing out for again?” She saw Xu Qingfeng standing at the door, deep in thought and not moving, so she patted her shoulder.
“Take this, your drink.” She said, tossing a bottle of Coke into Xu Qingfeng’s arms.
Gao Zhi walked a few steps back and stopped a student from the next class. “Classmate, could you please give this to your class representative?”
The student placed it on Xia Yiqiu’s desk, and from afar, Gao Zhi heard Xia Yiqiu’s reply.
“Thank you, Gao Zhi,” the voice was still confident and cheerful.
Xu Qingfeng fell into thought.
“It’s nothing, let’s go inside,” Xu Qingfeng told Gao Zhi.
Maybe I should be as direct as Gao Zhi. Running away is never the way to solve problems.
If I hadn’t joined the Psychology Club, where would all these interactions over the past few days have come from? Interacting naturally might be much better than struggling alone.
“Fine, you weird blockhead,” Gao Zhi was even more annoyed with her childhood friend than a few days ago.
When the evening self-study session ended, Xu Qingfeng habitually glanced into the classroom next door but didn’t find the familiar figure. She withdrew her gaze. Actually, even if she had seen her, it would only have been an extra glance, but that extra glance would have been enough to make her happy for a long time.
Back home, Xu Qingfeng called out as usual.
“Mom, I’m home.” As expected, there was no reply.
Xu Qingfeng’s parents weren’t home; she had heard in the morning that they had something to do and wouldn’t be back.
She had eaten at school before the evening self-study, but felt a little hungry after it ended. She opened the stove, boiled water, added noodles, then an egg a little later, and sprinkled a spoon of salt. Simple egg noodles were ready. Her movements were smooth and practiced.
After eating and tidying up, she took a shower and then sat down at her desk.
What should I write today?
Her habit was to write some casual prose or poetry when she had free time.
I know I exist in a dark corner
Looking up at you, the brilliant sun
They say not to show emotion
Yet they forget the charm of the slanted sun below the corner window
Golden light falls on the desk, falls into my eyes as I look at you
Blocked buildings, layers of obstacles in the vast city
Will you wait? When the sun sets
To spend time together, until night falls
