- Chapter 5 - Delivering the Clothes
Xu Qingfeng woke up unusually late the next day, at ten o’clock. No one was home.
She went to the kitchen and simply cooked a bowl of noodles. The taste was bland but edible. She wasn’t picky about food, having gotten used to cooking for herself at some point.
Long ago, Xu Qingfeng would feel lonely and sad, but gradually, getting used to eating alone seemed to become a normal thing.
Perhaps I should buy a bicycle?
A light, intensely warm glow appeared in Xu Qingfeng’s eyes as she mechanically chewed her food.
Although the walk from home to school wasn’t very far, if she had a vehicle yesterday, she could have given Yiqiu a ride home.
Thinking about it, Xu Qingfeng calculated her savings—more than enough. Her Lunar New Year money was never taken away, her parents were generous with her allowance, and since she usually had nowhere to spend money, she had saved quite a bit.
Reporting her plan was still necessary. Xu Qingfeng told Ms. Yan about her plan to buy a bike today and received a reply expressing apologies for not being able to accompany her, along with a budget of three thousand yuan.
Searching on her phone, she found a nearby bicycle shop, less than a kilometer away. She decided to walk there and greeted the security guard at the gate on her way out, as she was always a polite person.
Arriving at the target shop, the entrance was filled with all sorts of bicycles. Xu Qingfeng wanted to buy a mountain bike; they looked cool. This was somewhat inconsistent with her external image, but she genuinely liked them. In fact, if she changed her style of clothing, her face was perfectly suited for a cool, aloof look.
The bike shop owner immediately welcomed the customer, and after learning Xu Qingfeng’s basic needs, he eagerly recommended bikes, introducing the features and prices of each one. But these were not what Xu Qingfeng was concerned about.
“Boss, do you have any bicycles with a back seat?” That was her only requirement.
The shop owner was stunned. Most modern bikes don’t have back seats; the kids these days who ride alone prefer lightweight bikes for speed and dislike back seats. But a businessman is always sharp.
“Yes, we do. Let’s head inside.”
Among a pile of bikes, Xu Qingfeng selected a black mountain bike of a well-known brand that had a back seat. It cost less than two thousand yuan. Seeing such a non-haggling customer, the owner specially gifted her a bike lock.
Xu Qingfeng rode the bike home, stopping by the supermarket to buy some groceries on the way.
After returning home, she quickly stir-fried two dishes. After lunch, she remembered the big task for the day: the completed set of coordinates she’d prepared last night hadn’t been sent yet.
After sending the photos and seeing no immediate reply, Xu Qingfeng felt a wave of drowsiness and drifted off to sleep.
When she woke up, there was still no reply. She picked up Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Notes from Underground from the bookshelf and read until dusk without realizing it.
The content of the book made Xu Qingfeng wonder, Am I also an unhappy person?
Perhaps I am.
In her melancholy, she picked up her phone, and a message from Xia Yiqiu appeared.
It seems I am not.
I am very fortunate, because of your existence.
Xia Yiqiu: Qingfeng, I’m sorry, I was on a plane just now.
Xia Yiqiu: I saw it. The colors you matched are great. I think it can be the final version. Teacher Du just approved it.
Xia Yiqiu: You are amazing!
Xu Qingfeng: Thank you.
Xia Yiqiu had gone to City A for a relative’s birthday party. Xu Qingfeng did not ask or continue the conversation, as she felt she wasn’t qualified yet.
She didn’t know that Xia Yiqiu was looking forward to more replies on the other end of the phone.
In the blink of an eye, it was late Saturday afternoon. Xu Qingfeng planned to eat dinner at school, so she rode her new bike out.
It was still early after dinner, and when she leisurely walked to the classroom, there were only a few people there.
Xu Qingfeng’s seat this week was by the window. She stared intently at the evening glow outside, resting her head on her hand, exuding a sudden air of laziness. The fiery red clouds stained the sky, reflecting on the young boys and girls walking and playing below the building.
Is this youth?
The classroom gradually filled up. Gao Zhi sat down carelessly, seemingly in a good mood, and took out her homework to write. Han Feng, sitting in front, joked that the sun must have risen in the west.
Before class officially started, the room was slightly noisy, then suddenly quieted down.
Xu Qingfeng turned her head. Xia Yiqiu was standing at the door, holding a bag. The setting sun shone on her long hair, giving it a golden sheen. Her gaze was so gentle, and the slight smile on her lips made it impossible to look away.
What did she just hear? It sounded like,
“Excuse me, student, could you please call Xu Qingfeng out for me?” Xia Yiqiu stopped the student who was about to enter the door.
Without waiting for the student to relay the message, Xu Qingfeng immediately left her seat and quickly walked up to Xia Yiqiu.
Xu Qingfeng led Xia Yiqiu a few steps away from the door.
“Yiqiu, why did you come?” Xu Qingfeng’s tone held a hint of excitement.
“I came to bring you clothes!” Xia Yiqiu said, handing the bag to Xu Qingfeng.
The most important thing is to see you. But this sentence was left unsaid.
“Oh, I see.”
For some reason, she felt a little disappointed. It’s just to deliver clothes.
Before she could ask anything more, she spotted the figure of Teacher Liu Li in the distance.
“I have to go. You should hurry inside. Your teacher is here.” Xia Yiqiu waved at her and quickly scampered away to the next classroom like a rabbit. Even the best students are afraid of the teacher.
Mhm.
Gao Zhi looked at Xu Qingfeng, who didn’t seem as excited as when she first went out, but rather had a hint of sadness, which made her curious.
“What did Class Monitor Xia look for you for? Oh no, she should be called President Xia now.” Gao Zhi had a good impression of Xia Yiqiu and even showed a bit more deference now. Yesterday, she learned that Xia Yiqiu was Li Tian’s best friend, and Xia Yiqiu played a part in her “pending observation” status.
“She came to bring me clothes,” Xu Qingfeng said in a flat tone, explaining the reason.
“I see.” Gao Zhi didn’t probe further. To her, it was perfectly normal for “straightforward” Xu Qingfeng to give clothes to a friend. Thus, she completely missed the development of her friend’s romantic feelings. If she knew about Xu Qingfeng’s overthinking, she would probably scold her.
He who hesitates is lost. Young people need to take the initiative!
It was Han Feng who turned back and sighed.
“Class Monitor Xia is so beautiful! I wish she would come around more often. It’s great eye candy.”
The next second, he shivered all over.
Strange, I’m wearing a lot today. Why is it suddenly a bit cold?
Xu Qingfeng retracted her icy gaze.
At the same time, Gao Zhi’s condemnation came.
“Han Feng, what do you mean? Are we not good eye candy?”
They were about to start bickering when they saw “Old Man Liu,” and they instantly sat up straight and quiet.
During the first half of the evening self-study class, Teacher Du sent a message in the Psychology Club group, asking everyone who had time tomorrow to clean the club’s floor.
The school had greatly contributed to the students’ healthy growth by providing a dedicated floor for the Psychology Club’s activities, spanning two to three hundred square meters and divided into different functional rooms. The main task tomorrow was to clean the conference room.
The club members had a separate small group where Xia Yiqiu was organizing the manpower, collecting names of those who were available and those who weren’t. Xu Qingfeng thought about it—she was at school for lunch every day, so she had time—and reported her name.
When the evening self-study class ended, she saw the list. The names of the President, Vice President, and all the department heads were on it.
Suddenly, she felt a little anticipation.
