- Chapter 4 - A Tense Conversation
On the other side, Li Tian was also consulting her “brain trust” for advice.
Li Tian: Qiuqiu, do you think Gao Legao will be secretly unhappy with me for going back on my word like this?
Li Tian: Did she only agree reluctantly because she couldn’t refuse me?
Li Tian knew her actions were somewhat unethical. Who insists on breaking up one day and then says they’ll “see” the next?
But she was truly conflicted. On one hand, she feared the future, but on the other, she couldn’t bear to let go of Gao Legao. This was her first relationship. Although it was an online romance, the spiritual connection was incredibly fulfilling, and she didn’t want her first love to end this way.
When she learned she had been selected for the study abroad exchange program, her hopes grew, and the scale in her heart tipped. She decided to meet Gao Legao before making a final decision.
Xia Yiqiu also began to ponder. She lay on her bed, her hair wrapped up, still damp, having just answered her best friend’s barrage of questions before she could dry it.
In reality, she and Gao Zhi lived very close to each other, both in a villa neighborhood near the school. They often ran into each other. Combining this with the fact that Gao Legao was a student at their school, and Gao Zhi’s unusual behavior today, Xia Yiqiu had a daring thought: Could Gao Zhi be Gao Legao?
Xia Yiqiu: Tiantian, can you send me a picture of Gao Legao?
Xia Yiqiu typed quickly.
Li Tian: Ah, okay.
Her best friend’s request was a little strange, but Li Tian didn’t think much of it.
A cheerful photo arrived, showing Gao Zhi in casual clothes, with a high ponytail, and a bright, white-toothed smile.
By all accounts, Gao Zhi was tall, slender, and a vibrant beauty who should have been extremely popular. However, she was a bit clumsy/naïve, a trait Li Tian happened to love the most.
Sure enough, it was Gao Zhi.
This made things simple.
Xia Yiqiu: Tiantian, I think I know this Gao Legao. Her name is Gao Zhi, and she’s a student in Class 0 of the Liberal Arts section next door. I’ve known her for quite a while, and she’s a great person.
Xia Yiqiu: As for your worry, it’s probably unnecessary. She was heartbroken about the breakup today and was incredibly upset, so it seems she really doesn’t want to break up.
Xia Yiqiu recalled the scene from the evening. So, that was the reason for her intermittent sadness.
Xia Yiqiu: Explain things clearly to her and try to win back her forgiveness.
Xia Yiqiu thought of Gao Zhi’s frantic talk. Although it was honest, it was indeed fueled by excessive sorrow. Such a huge blow warranted a sincere apology.
In truth, Gao Zhi was purely dizzy with happiness. She could barely say anything, managed a “Sure,” and immediately went to show off to Xu Qingfeng.
Li Tian’s subsequent explanation made her happy for a while longer. Gao Zhi’s sharing of her future plans with Li Tian also gave her more confidence in their future. Both parties were sweetly and happily awaiting their meeting in a few months.
Thinking of Gao Zhi reminded Xia Yiqiu of Xu Qingfeng. She wondered what that blockhead was doing.
Her beautiful face, under the night light, was especially striking. She flopped forward onto the soft bed, then suddenly sat up, hugging a pillow.
Xia Yiqiu was a woman of action. She took off her hair wrap, started blow-drying her hair, and simultaneously started texting.
Xia Yiqiu: Qingfeng, what are you doing right now?
Xia Yiqiu: Are you asleep?
Xu Qingfeng had just stepped out of the bathroom. Her medium-length hair was slightly tousled, her pale face flushed from the steam, and the faint outline of her abs was visible beneath her white shirt.
Xu Qingfeng usually liked to run on the track during the self-study class break. It helped her exercise and clear her head. Many students did this, but few persisted. She also exercised at home, having studied Taekwondo since primary school, giving her a cool, distant aura.
Xu Qingfeng noticed her phone flickering not far away but wasn’t in a hurry. Slightly nearsighted, she couldn’t tell who it was but assumed it was Gao Zhi.
She calmly picked up her glasses from the side and wiped them. She had forgotten to leave them outside when she showered.
After cleaning her glasses, she picked up her phone, though she didn’t put them on. She rarely wore glasses at home; today was an exception where she forgot to take them off.
When she picked up her phone, the screen showed two messages from Yiqiu sent five minutes ago.
“Yiqiu messaged me,” Xu Qingfeng said her thought out loud, seemingly in disbelief.
How could this be!
I haven’t replied for so long, but I’m not asleep.
I hope Yiqiu hasn’t fallen asleep.
She quickly replied.
Xu Qingfeng: I’m not asleep. Sorry, I was just taking a shower.
Xu Qingfeng: Yiqiu, is something wrong?
Xia Yiqiu hadn’t slept. The five minutes were just enough time for her to dry her hair. She figured Xu Qingfeng must be asleep since she hadn’t replied for so long and was about to turn off her phone.
Xu Qingfeng’s message came through.
Not asleep, huh.
Can’t I message you if nothing’s wrong? A hint of resentment crossed Xia Yiqiu’s mind.
Xia Yiqiu: Nothing much, I just wanted to tell you that I suddenly found out today that Gao Zhi’s cross-border pen pal is my childhood friend.
Xia Yiqiu: Intermittent sadness, I get it now.
Xia Yiqiu had a realization. It seemed Gao Zhi and Li Tian were truly fated, having known each other since childhood. However, she decided not to tell the three of them right now. It felt utterly unfair for her to be the only one who remembered.
Especially the blockhead she was currently chatting with.
Xu Qingfeng was stunned. What a coincidence!
Xu Qingfeng: That’s pretty great then.
Xu Qingfeng: A match made in heaven.
The other side was typing… Half a minute later.
Xia Yiqiu: In a way, yes, it is.
Xia Yiqiu stared out at the trees in the courtyard. The wind was still wild, swaying the trunks left and right. The moon was long gone.
If she liked me too, we would also be a match made in heaven.
It’s a shame.
To outsiders, Xia Yiqiu was cheerful, and in fact, she was. She lived in an exceptionally harmonious, wealthy family. Her parents had been loving since their school days until now, often leaving her behind to travel, planning for her to take over the family company as soon as she graduated.
Proud as she was, having seen such a perfect example, she held extremely high standards and expectations for love. Unfortunately, no one had made her heart flutter. The only one—this dull, blockheaded person—seemed completely uninterested in romance.
Xu Qingfeng: Yiqiu, I’ve drawn a preliminary design for the group emblem.
Xu Qingfeng: I’d like to discuss it with you. Is there anything you’d like to change? I still have some details to finalize, and I want your opinion, such as the color scheme.
She then uploaded the drawing.
Xia Yiqiu tapped to open it.
There were only a few simple strokes, yet they were surprisingly vivid and intuitive. The brushwork was skillful, the lines fluid, and Xu Qingfeng’s name was in the bottom right corner of the paper.
This signature is quite nice, but the handwriting seems familiar.
Xia Yiqiu recalled the note from that day. Could it really have been written by Xu Qingfeng?
What Xia Yiqiu didn’t know was that the lost note she picked up that day coincidentally didn’t have a signature, while Xu Qingfeng had a habit of signing everything she created.
She quickly found the note to compare the handwriting, feeling a mix of joy and worry.
The good news was that the blockhead might actually have feelings. The bad news was that she might have a rival in love.
Who writes a love poem unless they are lovesick?
In fact, Xu Qingfeng genuinely would.
Xia Yiqiu’s mind began to race. Perhaps I can make her fall for me?
But I’m not sure if she likes girls.
Gao Zhi and Li Tian both made it work. I still have a chance through subtle influence, before she confesses to someone else. Since I picked up the note, you won’t escape.
Xia Yiqiu had already forgotten the reasons she gave up a year ago. Li Tian’s experience gave her immense confidence.
Xia Yiqiu: Your drawing is very good.
This was not flattery. She wished she could watch her draw in person sometime, but her heart still felt a little bitter as she replied.
Xia Yiqiu: The Chinese phrase ‘Harbor of the Soul’ is at the top. Perhaps you could add the Pinyin abbreviation underneath. That would make it more symmetrical and less empty.
Her suggestion was incredibly helpful. Xu Qingfeng immediately put it into practice. Looking at the result, it was indeed a better fit. She then sent the new version to Xia Yiqiu.
Xu Qingfeng: Yiqiu, you are so smart.
Xu Qingfeng viewed everything about Xia Yiqiu through rose-tinted glasses. She truly believed what she said.
Xia Yiqiu: You are, too.
Xia Yiqiu couldn’t help but chuckle. It’s nothing to praise me for, yet the curve of her lips betrayed her good mood.
Xia Yiqiu: As for the color scheme, how about blue and yellow?
Blue represents hope, and yellow represents vitality. Since signing up, she had done some research and learned simple psychology.
Xu Qingfeng: That’s a great idea, but I need to figure out which shades of blue and yellow to pair together. Can I send it to you tomorrow?
Xu Qingfeng had a subtle intention. Firstly, she really did need to draw a few more options to choose from and couldn’t finish right away. Secondly, she wanted an excuse to contact her again.
Xia Yiqiu: Okay.
Xia Yiqiu: It’s getting late. I’m going to sleep.
Xia Yiqiu didn’t go to sleep. She suddenly remembered that Xu Qingfeng’s clothes were still in her bag. The housekeeper, Aunt Li, missed them when taking clothes to the laundry room. It was supposed to rain tomorrow and the day after, so they could be dried, but she was afraid she’d forget in the morning, so she decided to take the clothes downstairs and put them in the washing machine.
Xu Qingfeng: Goodnight.
Xu Qingfeng didn’t sleep. The conversation had invigorated her, and she immediately rushed to test color combinations, under the pretense of “better safe than sorry.”
