The Pursuit of Love After Divorcing My Cold Omega - Chapter 88
“I love you, Zhizhi. I love you so much.”
Cheng Lu saw it clearly: Yu Kunian was crying—a sight truly rare in a lifetime.
Yu Kunian’s eyes were terrifyingly red, and those two teardrops fell right after she finished speaking. The Alpha’s voice was choked with sobs; her eyes were full of grief, yet remained incredibly persistent. Cheng Lu couldn’t help but believe that Yu Kunian was steadfast in her feelings for Song Wenzhi, but she also felt a massive headache coming on. While suppressing the discomfort caused by Yu Kunian’s pheromones, she said:
“Alright, alright, I know you love her. But it’s useless telling me this; you have to tell Song Wenzhi.”
It wasn’t that Yu Kunian didn’t want to tell Song Wenzhi, but when she faced her that morning, she had endured the Omega’s accusations and resentment. Hearing rejection after rejection, she was afraid that the moment this love was voiced, it would be struck down. She was actually afraid to speak, terrified that Song Wenzhi didn’t have even a spark of love left for her—if that were true, there really, truly would be no chance left.
A tiny sliver of hope was all Yu Kunian had kept for herself. She thought, Song Wenzhi should still love me, right?
She prayed to the heavens that Song Wenzhi still loved her.
Cheng Lu sighed and crouched down. “What exactly happened between you two today? Did you have a fight?”
Yu Kunian was unwilling to answer and averted her gaze from Cheng Lu.
“Forget it, I don’t care what was said, but can you stop acting like you’re half-dead… Your rut is this painful, at least go lie down in the room, okay?” Cheng Lu reached out to help Yu Kunian up, but her hand was swatted away.
Cheng Lu didn’t get angry. She asked in a deep voice, “Yu Kunian, are you really going to spend this entire rut sitting on the floor? No matter what happened, you shouldn’t be this despondent. Are you just giving up like this?”
Hearing this, Yu Kunian’s fingertips twitched slightly. She closed her eyes and said in a muffled voice, “What else can I do?”
Cheng Lu fell silent, worry deepening between her brows. Then she heard Yu Kunian add: “I can’t be without her, but I’ve already lost her.”
Yu Kunian said this with a trembling voice. She felt despair; if her world didn’t have Song Wenzhi, it would have no vitality. And now, Song Wenzhi had said it was impossible for them. Yu Kunian didn’t know what else she could do.
Cheng Lu really hadn’t expected things to become this serious. She didn’t even know where to begin comforting her. Furthermore, because of the emotional fluctuations, the Alpha’s pheromones were becoming increasingly aggressive, starting to continuously repel anyone who wasn’t Song Wenzhi, and she couldn’t listen to a word being said.
If the entire rut was spent like this, Cheng Lu felt Yu Kunian might actually go insane.
“I’m truly defeated by you.” The scent of mint carried an irresistible pressure, forcing Cheng Lu’s own pheromones to leak out; even her scent-blocking patch couldn’t control it.
The scent of brandy drifted out faintly, but it was quickly masked by Yu Kunian’s pheromones. Cheng Lu’s expression grew more pained, and she had no choice but to stand up and back away. Looking at Yu Kunian in this state, she felt helpless but began to think of a solution.
What way was there to make Yu Kunian feel better right now?
Cheng Lu could only think of Song Wenzhi.
An Alpha in heat needs an Omega’s pheromones to be soothed, especially those of the Omega they love—the effect would be twice as good. Even though Yu Kunian and Song Wenzhi had just fought, Cheng Lu truly couldn’t think of any other way. After all, Yu Kunian only cared about Song Wenzhi; if she found another Omega, she felt Yu Kunian would kick them out without mercy.
Cheng Lu left Yu Kunian’s home, the scent of mint still clinging to her. After changing to a new blocking patch, her own pheromones finally stopped leaking, but the mixture of brandy and mint scents made her feel uncomfortable.
Originally, the aggressive pheromones of Alphas naturally repelled each other, and Cheng Lu couldn’t ignore the discomfort of that repulsion.
Attempting to let the night wind blow away the pheromones on her body, Cheng Lu stood downstairs for a long time. Only after the concentration of mint had dissipated significantly did she get into her car.
Driving to the research institute, Cheng Lu checked the time, hoping Song Wenzhi hadn’t left work yet.
Song Wenzhi and Xia Weichi were always the last to leave the institute. When Cheng Lu entered, Xia Weichi happened to be on the first floor. The two looked at each other for a moment before Xia Weichi spoke first:
“This is a research institute. Are you looking for someone?”
Cheng Lu curled her lips into a polite smile and nodded slightly. “Director Xia, I’m waiting for someone.”
Xia Weichi didn’t remember knowing the person in front of her, though she did look a bit familiar, as if she had seen her somewhere. After thinking for a while without any results, Xia Weichi simply gave up. In any case, it had nothing to do with her; it wasn’t strange for someone here to recognize her.
She hadn’t expected they were waiting for the same person.
Cheng Lu also hadn’t anticipated that Song Wenzhi’s state would be even worse than Yu Kunian’s. Her expression was dejected and despondent, looking just as “half-dead” as Yu Kunian, which made the Alpha see a certain “compatibility” between them.
Watching Song Wenzhi come downstairs, Cheng Lu’s expression became solemn. However, she had worn a special mask when she came, trying her best to avoid smelling the Omega’s scent, and she kept her distance from Song Wenzhi the entire time. Cheng Lu’s Omega-phobia remained severe; she even felt irritable just looking at Song Wenzhi for a few moments, but for Yu Kunian’s sake, she suppressed her discomfort and spoke as calmly as possible to call out to her.
“Miss Song, do you have a moment to talk?”
Song Wenzhi had originally intended to go back with Xia Weichi. She had been out of it all day, almost in a daze. Her gland was also starting to ache slightly, so she wanted to go back and rest early; she didn’t have the energy to maintain her usual composure.
Xia Weichi glanced at her. “This lady, Xiao Zhi isn’t feeling well right now. It might be inconvenient.”
“Director Xia, I’m looking for Miss Song, not you. Why are you in such a hurry to speak?” Cheng Lu didn’t want to waste too much time and didn’t have much of a temper for Xia Weichi; she wasn’t afraid of offending anyone anyway.
Xia Weichi wanted to speak again, but Song Wenzhi raised a hand to stop her. The Omega said in a low voice, “What is it?”
Cheng Lu looked at Xia Weichi. “I’ll have to ask Director Xia to excuse us.”
Once Xia Weichi had left, Cheng Lu maintained her distance from Song Wenzhi. She said succinctly, “Miss Song, I want to ask you for a favor. Go and see Yu Kunian.”
Hearing that name, Song Wenzhi belatedly realized this Alpha’s voice sounded familiar. “You are… Cheng Lu, Miss Cheng?”
“It’s me.”
“President Yu and I no longer have any relationship. It’s not convenient for me to see her.” Song Wenzhi forced herself to use the last of her logic to refuse. Since she had made the decision, she couldn’t let her heart soften again.
Seeing Song Wenzhi about to leave, Cheng Lu blurted out, “Yu Kunian isn’t going to make it.”
Being in a rut while neglecting her body, she would indeed “not make it” sooner or later, but the way Cheng Lu said it was quite ambiguous. Thus, Song Wenzhi’s footsteps paused, and she asked, “What happened to Yu Kunian?”
“…Uh, she,” Cheng Lu rarely hesitated. She wanted to find a reason that would make Song Wenzhi go see Yu Kunian, but she couldn’t make one up after a long time. Finally, with a solemn expression, she said in a deep voice: “She’s dying.”
Actually, she wasn’t really lying; Yu Kunian looked like she was truly about to die.
Song Wenzhi’s pupils trembled. She nearly failed to stand steady, seemingly unable to accept this. At first, she didn’t believe it, but then her face could no longer hide her panicked emotions. The Omega turned back, somewhat drained of strength, and said, “What happened? How could she… where is she?”
“I’ll take you there.” Although this lie seemed a bit unethical, Cheng Lu hadn’t intentionally cursed Yu Kunian. In her haste, this was all she could think of, but as long as she could get Song Wenzhi to see Yu Kunian, her goal would be achieved.
Thus, Song Wenzhi didn’t have time to explain to Xia Weichi. After hurriedly telling Xia Weichi to go back first, she turned and got into Cheng Lu’s car. The Omega felt herself sinking into an endless terror because of the news that Yu Kunian was dying. She even began to regret what she had said to Yu Kunian that morning, wondering if she was the reason something had happened to her; she couldn’t help but blame herself.
She didn’t dare think about what would happen to her if Yu Kunian died.
But Song Wenzhi didn’t want Yu Kunian to die. Her mind had gone blank just now; she only felt her breathing become labored, her heart pressed down by a giant stone. she began to pray continuously, hoping Yu Kunian was safe, hoping Yu Kunian was alright.
She wanted to ask for more information from Cheng Lu, but this Alpha was somewhat impatient with her and wouldn’t say anything, even acting annoyed that she was too bothersome. Song Wenzhi had no choice but to stop speaking. Sitting in the back seat, she even felt the car was moving too slowly, wanting to arrive at the destination immediately.
Panic enveloped Song Wenzhi. She had never been this afraid before. Yu Kunian’s silhouette flashed repeatedly in her mind; her fingertips couldn’t stop trembling, and her thoughts were becoming chaotic.
Cheng Lu felt that her lie was a bit over the top, but she didn’t want to speak again either. If she confessed now, Song Wenzhi might get out of the car and leave immediately. In the end, she said nothing. Bringing Song Wenzhi upstairs, when the door opened, a pheromone scent even more intense than before rushed out. Cheng Lu walked in first and called Yu Kunian’s name, but received no response.
This made Song Wenzhi’s heart tighten even more.
Cheng Lu walked past the entryway. Her gland was starting to feel uncomfortable again, so she couldn’t go any closer. She simply said to Song Wenzhi behind her, “Miss Song, please help her.”
After saying that, Cheng Lu retreated, frowning as she walked out and closed the door, leaving Song Wenzhi and Yu Kunian alone in the room.
When Song Wenzhi discovered Yu Kunian’s figure in the living room, the Alpha was collapsed on the floor in extreme pain, almost curled up. Heavy gasping echoed in the room, and tears splashed onto the floor. In a daze, Yu Kunian seemed to hear Song Wenzhi calling her.
Urgent, concerned shouts.
Seeing Yu Kunian like this, Song Wenzhi felt as if her heart was about to jump out of her chest. She didn’t care about anything else and hurriedly crouched down to check Yu Kunian’s condition. When she grabbed the Alpha’s wrist, she found the skin temperature was a bit high. If the mint scent wasn’t so strong, Song Wenzhi would have thought Yu Kunian had a fever.
But fortunately, it was just a rut; she wouldn’t actually die.
Song Wenzhi let out a complete sigh of relief, though her trembling fingertips hadn’t stopped yet. With a lingering fear in her heart, she leaned in a bit closer, pushing her own discomfort to the back of her mind, and asked with concern, “Yu Kunian, can you still get up?”
Being in a rut, Yu Kunian was indeed becoming somewhat delirious from the pain. She felt like the voice by her ear was a hallucination; her tightly closed eyes wouldn’t open. She shivered slightly and gently rubbed her lips against the watch she wore on her left wrist.
It hurt too much. She wanted to release the Omega pheromones inside the watch, but she couldn’t bear to use them.
Her moist eye-corners were chilled by the floor. Yu Kunian’s breathing hitched, and her fingertips instinctively curled, but she unintentionally caught hold of something. The touch was soft and carried warmth.
The Alpha slowly lifted her eyelids. In the gloom, she glimpsed the silhouette of another person, but without light, she couldn’t see clearly and thought it was Cheng Lu. But in the next moment, that person spoke again:
“Yu Kunian, don’t scare me.”
The tone and words were fearful, worried, and helpless. The voice was so familiar.
A moment later, Yu Kunian was certain that the person was Song Wenzhi. She practically bolted upright. Under the moonlight shining through the window, she saw Song Wenzhi’s hazy face. The Omega’s cheeks were still a bit moist; she had never seen Yu Kunian like this.
“Zhizhi…”
Yu Kunian’s tears fell. She was in disbelief. In the next moment, losing control, she opened her arms and pulled Song Wenzhi into a tight embrace. Only after realizing the touch was real did the Alpha say with a sobbing tone: “Zhizhi, I really can’t be without you.”
Song Wenzhi was pulled into a full embrace. She didn’t break away, though the dense mint scent was continuously affecting her. “Yu Kunian, how are you feeling now?”
“Not good.” Yu Kunian lowered her head and buried it in Song Wenzhi’s neck. Her voice was muffled. “I’m not good, Zhizhi, I’m not good at all. I’m so uncomfortable, my gland hurts so much. Zhizhi, have pity on me, please?”
Song Wenzhi’s fingertips paused for a moment. she lowered her eyes. Facing Yu Kunian’s display of misery, the Omega felt heartbroken. “Let go of me first and go to the bedroom—”
“No, I can’t let go of you.” Yu Kunian shook her head, holding her even tighter. Her scorching heat was also transferred to Song Wenzhi. “If I let go, you’ll leave. I don’t want you to leave… Zhizhi, I don’t want you to leave. I miss you, I miss you so much.”
Yu Kunian’s voice grew softer and softer. Tears wet the Omega’s collar. Yu Kunian whimpered a few times. Song Wenzhi slowly raised her hand and stroked the Alpha’s back. After a moment, she heard Yu Kunian speak with both breakdown and reverence:
“I love you, Zhizhi. I love you so much.”
“Please don’t leave me. I can’t live without you. Zhizhi, don’t leave me, I beg you.”
The word “love” was like a bolt of lightning, leaving Song Wenzhi frozen in place. The Omega’s heart shook; her breathing stopped in disbelief, thinking she had hallucinated it.
“You… what did you say, Yu Kunian?” Song Wenzhi felt her whole body trembling. she asked again: “Yu Kunian, what did you say?”
Yu Kunian’s chest heaved with her crying, but facing Song Wenzhi’s question, she had to answer no matter how much she choked up: “I said, Song Wenzhi, I love you. Yu Kunian loves Song Wenzhi very, very much. Without Zhizhi, she can’t go on.”
Don’t leave her, Yu Kunian pleaded with Song Wenzhi, don’t throw her away. All of the Alpha’s emotions were dismantled. At the moment she saw Song Wenzhi, she showed her last “hidden card.” she was more serious and reverent than at any other time, and also more fearful and uncertain than ever before.
Song Wenzhi felt her train of thought break. It was as if Yu Kunian’s words were echoing repeatedly in her ears. For a time, she was at a loss and didn’t speak for a long while.
Yu Kunian couldn’t bear even a moment of silence. she cried even harder, holding Song Wenzhi and refusing to let go, for fear that the Omega would leave from right under her nose. Now, she had become full of anxiety about gains and losses, no longer having her former ease.
“Zhizhi, I am very foolish. By the time I realized I loved you, it was already too late, you had already left… I’m not lying to you, what I’m saying is true. You believe me, okay?”
