The Pursuit of Love After Divorcing My Cold Omega - Chapter 85
She loved Yu Kunian, hopelessly.
Song Wenzhi lowered her eyes. “No.” She pushed the pile of documents on the desk aside, avoiding Yu Kunian’s gaze. After a moment, she added, “There’s a lot to handle, and I want to get it done early.”
In truth, she didn’t need to explain, but she did anyway.
Yu Kunian had no experience with the research institute’s operations; she couldn’t help Song Wenzhi with her work. Nor did she doubt Song Wenzhi’s words. She simply nodded and stepped out, looking somewhat dejected.
Tomorrow was the final day.
Yu Kunian had been counting down since the first day of the week. She cherished every second spent with Song Wenzhi. Having finally managed to ease the tension with the Omega, Yu Kunian desperately wanted to stretch out the time.
The Alpha was drowning in the excitement of their reduced estrangement, yet she was simultaneously plagued by anxiety over the impending end of their agreement.
Yu Kunian thought that perhaps, just perhaps, Song Wenzhi was close to accepting her again, close to being willing to start over. She wanted to do more in these final hours, but Song Wenzhi gave her no opportunity.
Even the chance to drive Song Wenzhi home today was snatched away.
Xia Weichi took Song Wenzhi away ahead of schedule. Yu Kunian stared blankly at the vase on the desk in the empty office. For some reason, she felt a sense of foreboding.
At that moment, Song Wenzhi followed Xia Weichi out of the institute. Xia Weichi’s expression was grim. She held Song Wenzhi’s hand tightly and didn’t let go until they had crossed the street and turned a corner. Only then did the Alpha stop.
“What’s wrong?” Song Wenzhi asked, noticing Xia Weichi’s poor mood.
Xia Weichi met Song Wenzhi’s gaze. She hesitated for a moment before handing over a transparent file folder. “Wenzhi, you should look at this.”
Song Wenzhi’s brows furrowed, her heart sinking slightly. She opened the folder and found it contained information regarding Yu Kunian. More accurately, it contained everything about the “Nianzhi Alliance.”
“I used to wonder why the head of the CPP technology team always refused to meet me and insisted on only negotiating with you. It turns out the owner of this alliance is Yu Kunian.” Xia Weichi’s eyes darkened; she was more than a little indignant. “If I hadn’t looked into it, how would we have known she was playing us?”
Yu Kunian’s conditions had been too strange. Xia Weichi had sent people to investigate, and after considerable effort, she uncovered the truth.
Song Wenzhi was, of course, astonished. During her time in Lihua City, she knew nothing of Zhaoming Biotech’s specific business. Although Yu Kunian had mentioned a new technology, she hadn’t elaborated. To learn that the CPP technology was the result of Yu Kunian’s team left her stunned. The person they had been searching for so long was Yu Kunian.
“Isn’t that a good thing? Perhaps the cooperation will be easier to discuss,” Song Wenzhi asked.
Xia Weichi’s expression remained unpleasant. “If you talk cooperation, what benefit do you think she wants to gain from you?” Having said that, she flipped to the last page and pointed at a date. “Wenzhi, Yu Kunian didn’t come to New York because of you. The application for the Alliance was submitted by someone on her behalf before you even divorced. The guarantor was Cheng Lu. Everything was a calculated plan. Otherwise, how could she have established herself in New York so quickly?”
Hearing this judgment, Song Wenzhi’s heart truly sank.
Just the other day, Yu Kunian had told her that she came to New York because of her.
Was it another lie?
Song Wenzhi didn’t know, and she couldn’t bear to think too deeply about it. Her grip on the folder tightened, her breathing trembling. She tried her best to maintain a calm tone. “I have no benefits left for her to exploit.”
She still didn’t want to believe it—or rather, she refused to believe it.
“Who knows what else she is plotting!” Xia Weichi’s emotions finally broke. she spoke sharply, turning her head away and panting slightly, her chest tight with anger. “Yu Kunian is a master strategist to be able to calculate all the way to New York. Wenzhi, when Zhaoming Biotech was in crisis and Yu Kunian took so long to act, she was trying to extricate herself, do you understand? From this investigation, she had already decided to leave with the CPP team long ago. Everything until now has been part of her plan. Do you still think she chased you to New York out of some realization of love?”
Xia Weichi’s words were blunt. Yu Kunian was more calculating and profit-driven than they had imagined. They might not perceive what value they still held, but Yu Kunian would never pass up an opportunity to exploit someone, and she was skilled at laying the groundwork.
From beginning to end, Yu Kunian had told Song Wenzhi nothing—none of her plans.
During that time, Song Wenzhi had been so anxious about Zhaoming Biotech’s liquidity crisis that she couldn’t sleep. But it was all just Yu Kunian’s tactic? The Omega’s sleepless nights of worry—were they just a joke in Yu Kunian’s eyes?
Trying to scrap together funds for Yu Kunian made her look so pathetic.
How many things… had Yu Kunian kept from her?
“I…” For a moment, Song Wenzhi didn’t even have the strength to speak. Only a few wisps of breath remained. The last bit of stubbornness in her heart made it hard to fully accept this. “I will go and ask her.”
Xia Weichi grabbed her wrist. “Will she tell you the truth? Wenzhi, a bad person won’t tell you the bad things they’ve done. Yu Kunian will only coax and deceive you; she will never reveal her true plans.”
“What if she isn’t?” Song Wenzhi knew she was softening again.
She had warned herself from the start to stay away from Yu Kunian and to guard against her “sugar-coated bullets,” yet she couldn’t stop herself from gravitating toward the Alpha, sinking into her gaze. Loving her was an instinct that kept her drawing closer and softening her heart; she hid her pain and tried to use the joy in her heart to forget the past.
But one day, everything would be sliced open, just like now.
Song Wenzhi was forced to face that failed marriage once again. She didn’t regret it, but it hurt. That divorce agreement was something she still didn’t dare to take out. During her first days in New York, the pain in her gland had almost swallowed her into an abyss. The tears she had shed were still scalding, burning her heart.
The fantasy had to end. The estrangement between Song Wenzhi and Yu Kunian had never been resolved; their relationship was always precarious. The day of collapse would come sooner or later, and now it had arrived. That tiny, flickering hope collapsed along with it, buried without a trace.
“Not everyone speaks the truth. Most people in this world are selfish. Your trust has already been betrayed once; isn’t that enough to make you wary?” Xia Weichi said softly. Looking at Song Wenzhi, she couldn’t help but feel heartache. “Wenzhi, if you can’t bring yourself to cut ties, then I will do it.”
Xia Weichi paused, pulling the folder away. “Let me play the villain. I will make sure Yu Kunian never comes near you again. I’ll make her disappear from your world. I’ll drive her away for you.”
Song Wenzhi said nothing more. Her thoughts were in a whirlwind. The voices around her were clear, but she couldn’t process them. Now, she didn’t even know what she was thinking. Did she want Yu Kunian to go, or did she want Yu Kunian to keep lying to her?
She didn’t even know who to believe anymore.
In this moment, she felt she couldn’t even trust herself.
She didn’t know how she got home. Outwardly, the Omega appeared normal, her behavior unchanged, but she was silent. Back at home, she simply sat on the sofa, lost in a daze. Xia Weichi knew she needed time to think, so she didn’t stay long. Before leaving, she reminded her that tomorrow was the final day.
Song Wenzhi lowered her eyes and curled up on the sofa—the same sofa where Yu Kunian had stayed for one night. But there was no longer any trace of the Alpha’s scent on it.
Sleep was impossible that night. Song Wenzhi’s fingertips were cold, and a faint pain returned to her gland. The potent inhibitor she had taken two days ago was supposed to last at least five.
Lies.
Everything was a lie.
Song Wenzhi closed her eyes, tears streaming uncontrollably from the corners of her eyes. Her breathing became erratic. In that moment, she desperately wanted to escape. There were too many complications, too many things to consider. She thought that if the person she had fallen for wasn’t Yu Kunian, perhaps she wouldn’t have to go through all this misery.
But the hypothesis couldn’t stand.
She loved Yu Kunian, hopelessly.
But it was because of that love that she couldn’t maintain this relationship while harboring such deep estrangement. She wanted a love of mutual honesty, an unreserved emotional bond—not this, where she was constantly guessing if the Alpha was plotting or if she was approaching her with a mask of false affection.
She barely slept all night. When dawn broke the next day, Song Wenzhi sat up with a frown. Her eyes were swollen, and she looked in poor shape. Though a night had passed, the Omega still didn’t know what to do, but today, she had to make a choice.
Xia Weichi came specifically to pick her up. Song Wenzhi washed up briefly and followed her out.
Yu Kunian had been waiting downstairs for a long time. She was about to speak when she saw Xia Weichi and Song Wenzhi walking intimately side-by-side. Song Wenzhi didn’t even look at her, allowing Xia Weichi to lead her into the car.
The two of them sat in the back seat. For the first time, the passenger seat was empty.
All the warmth in Yu Kunian’s smile vanished. She stared at the two figures, a flash of gloom crossing her eyes.
The Alpha was Song Wenzhi’s driver, but today there was an uninvited passenger—one she couldn’t refuse, because Song Wenzhi hadn’t rejected Xia Weichi’s company. Yu Kunian sat in the driver’s seat. Xia Weichi looked as usual, a smile on her lips that didn’t reach her eyes. “Thank you for the ride, President Yu. You are very capable at your job as a driver.”
It sounded like a thank you, but it was anything but.
Xia Weichi knew exactly what Yu Kunian was thinking, but today, everything would end. Yu Kunian was just a driver, nothing more.
Worse, Xia Weichi and Song Wenzhi were talking privately in the back. Yu Kunian couldn’t join in, making her truly feel like a stranger.
“Do you feel any better?” Xia Weichi asked softly. Song Wenzhi moved closer to the window, so Xia Weichi moved closer too, sitting right against the Omega. She added pointedly, “I should have stayed with you last night.”
Song Wenzhi frowned. She was in a complex mood and had no energy to deal with Xia Weichi’s ulterior motives. Her gaze lingered on the window for a long time before she said, “I’m fine.”
Xia Weichi grabbed Song Wenzhi’s hand. “Why are your hands so cold?”
Song Wenzhi instinctively tried to pull away, but Xia Weichi didn’t let go. Her gaze darkened as she whispered, “Wenzhi, let me make the decision for you.”
She would be the fuse that blew them apart. Even if Song Wenzhi resented her for it, this relationship had to be cut short.
The scene was eyesore. Up until now, Song Wenzhi hadn’t said a single word to Yu Kunian, nor had she given her a single look. Yet the Omega responded to every word Xia Weichi said while completely ignoring Yu Kunian’s presence, as if the Alpha didn’t exist. The space inside the car belonged to Song Wenzhi and Xia Weichi; there was no room for Yu Kunian.
It was as if… they were together.
They only focused on each other, their every word sparking jealousy. Even mundane questions felt more intimate than Yu Kunian’s attempts at closeness. Yu Kunian was overcome with jealousy and panic. The thought that Song Wenzhi and Xia Weichi were a couple flashed through her mind, and she couldn’t shake it.
The impossible seemed to be happening, sending Yu Kunian into a panic.
The atmosphere this morning was bizarre. Yu Kunian had sensed something was wrong. Song Wenzhi’s neglect had already scrambled her thoughts, and seeing Xia Weichi’s deliberate intimacy made it impossible not to overthink.
She almost ran a red light when she saw Xia Weichi brush a stray hair from Song Wenzhi’s forehead.
She had no right to stop it. Her sudden braking even gave Xia Weichi the chance to pull Song Wenzhi into her arms. The Alpha gripped the steering wheel, teeth clenched, failing to notice the Omega awkwardly pushing Xia Weichi’s hand away.
The car stopped in front of the research institute. The atmosphere between them turned heavy and strange. Xia Weichi and Song Wenzhi got out together. Yu Kunian’s gaze followed them, feeling powerless and frustrated.
The morning wind was cold, sharp enough to clear one’s head, but Yu Kunian’s thoughts snapped at that moment.
The Alpha stood there and spoke just before Xia Weichi and Song Wenzhi entered the gates: “Zhizhi, I have something to say to you.”
Xia Weichi turned back and said, “If you have something to say, you can say it to me.”
Xia Weichi looked at Yu Kunian as if she had every right to represent Song Wenzhi—as if she were Song Wenzhi’s Alpha. The air grew hostile once more. Yu Kunian didn’t answer. Her gaze sharpened, but beneath the intensity was disbelief and fear.
Fear that things were exactly as she feared.
Song Wenzhi gave Xia Weichi a gentle push. “Go inside.”
“Wenzhi—”
“I will handle it,” Song Wenzhi looked at her calmly, interrupting her. “I also said I would end this relationship myself.”
In truth, she never had a choice.
Xia Weichi finally nodded and turned into the institute. Song Wenzhi hid her trembling fingers in her sleeves before turning back to face Yu Kunian as she approached.
“Zhizhi, are you and her… together?”
The morning wind was too cold. When the Alpha asked that question, her throat burned as if a freezing gale had swept through.
