The Pursuit of Love After Divorcing My Cold Omega - Chapter 84
“Xiao Zhi, do not soften your heart.”
Song Wenzhi nodded. “I went.”
Xia Weichi’s expression shifted slightly. She hurriedly stood up to confirm that Song Wenzhi wasn’t injured. “Didn’t we agree? You weren’t supposed to go to the medical station today.”
“They sent an emergency message.” Song Wenzhi handed her phone over for her to see. “There’s a new Omega whose gland condition is looking bad. I thought you were busy, so I didn’t tell you.”
Xia Weichi’s brow furrowed deeper and deeper. “You went alone? Xiao Zhi, that’s very dangerous. No matter what, you should have sent me a message. You know they could be a pack of desperate criminals. Facing so many Alphas by yourself, it’s extremely easy for something to go wrong.”
“There wasn’t time. There was an Omega in very bad shape; I was worried her life was in danger,” Song Wenzhi explained, her expression turning a few shades more solemn. “Weichi, I couldn’t just ignore it. Those Omegas are in terrible physical condition—worse than the last time I went.”
Song Wenzhi sat on the other side of the sofa, her lips pressed into a tight line. Whenever she thought of the situation of the Omegas at the medical station, she couldn’t control her heartache. Back in Lihua City, Song Wenzhi had done everything in her power to help Omegas. When she arrived in New York, she thought the situation would be similar to Lihua City, but here, it was worlds apart from back home.
Domestic laws regarding Omega rights were constantly expanding. Over the years, Song Wenzhi had felt bit by bit that life for Omegas was improving; there was a place for them in society. But in New York, the laws she had seen, heard of, and felt back home turned into bubbles here.
While the status of Omegas was indeed not as low as it had been ten years ago, their current plight wasn’t much better. Aside from those with the skills to earn a living and secure a position, most were still suppressed and harmed.
The laws here indeed did not allow for the infringement of Omega rights or personal safety, but in reality, supervision in this area was not strict. The high-level personnel were almost entirely Alphas, with perhaps some Betas included, but there had never been an Omega in a high-ranking position.
Consequently, Song Wenzhi had seen a great deal of Omega suffering here.
Omegas without enough money to support themselves would be targeted by illegal organizations before they even had a chance to find skills or a job. These organizations used deception and abduction to lure them away. Subsequently, more and more Omegas fell into the abyss, while Alphas profited through these shadowy but extremely cautious methods. The police couldn’t grasp any evidence, let alone wipe them out in one fell swoop.
In the eyes of those Alphas, an Omega’s gland was an excellent experimental subject—a profit-making tool devoid of human rights that could be discarded at will.
The Omegas in the medical station were never conscious. Every time Song Wenzhi went, she couldn’t help but feel heartache for them. She wanted to rescue these Omegas, but at this stage, they couldn’t act rashly.
They needed to use the excuse of earning high extra income privately to make those people lower their guard. As the primary executors of this operation, Song Wenzhi and Xia Weichi had to be patient. They had to wait until they could infiltrate the inner circle and obtain evidence of the crimes before they could truly rescue all the Omegas.
And currently, they had not yet gained the other party’s trust.
What Song Wenzhi could do now was provide medication to those Omegas as promptly as possible to preserve their lives.
“Xiao Zhi, I know you feel for those Omegas, but if this happens again, you must notify me. What if they had turned on you today? Especially since your gland is so unique—if they noticed anything, you would easily be targeted,” Xia Weichi said, leaning closer to Song Wenzhi. She let out a soft sigh; she fully understood Song Wenzhi’s feelings, but she still felt the need to caution her.
Regardless of how important this operation was, as long as it concerned Song Wenzhi’s safety, everything else could be temporarily cast aside. Xia Weichi could not allow a situation where Song Wenzhi might get hurt.
“I ended up calling Yu Kunian to come along, in the capacity of an assistant,” Song Wenzhi said, lowering her gaze.
“No, she doesn’t belong to the Research Institute; we can’t let her get involved.” Xia Weichi’s face darkened. Yu Kunian was not part of this operation, and furthermore, she didn’t want Yu Kunian to have too much contact with matters regarding the Institute.
Song Wenzhi frowned. “But she has already shown her face.” Under the circumstances at the medical station, Yu Kunian coming to help her was faster than Xia Weichi pulling herself away from her busy schedule. Therefore, based on the judgment of her own safety, Song Wenzhi had to choose Yu Kunian.
Whether it was appropriate or not, it was the only thing Song Wenzhi could do.
She didn’t want to involve Yu Kunian either, but among the Alphas she knew, besides Xia Weichi, Yu Kunian was the only other familiar person.
Xia Weichi fell into deep thought. She certainly couldn’t let Yu Kunian join the operation, but since the situation had already occurred, they would just have to go along with it. At the very least, because Yu Kunian had shown her face at the medical station, they would need her to actually work at the Institute as an assistant for a few days, and then find a random excuse to dismiss her after a couple of days.
They would just use Yu Kunian to keep up appearances to deceive the private observations of those Alphas.
Fortunately, because Yu Kunian had recently been working as Song Wenzhi’s driver and frequently appeared at the entrance of the Institute, her transition to the role of assistant wouldn’t seem too forced.
Xia Weichi rubbed her cheek with her fingertip. She rarely wore such a worried expression. After weighing the options several times, she eventually compromised: “Tell Yu Kunian to be careful lately and not let any abnormalities be discovered. Tomorrow, after she drops you off at the Institute, we’ll talk about this together.”
Song Wenzhi nodded. “I’ll tell her.”
Xia Weichi turned her gaze toward the Omega, her eyes filled with an exhaustion she couldn’t hide. She lowered her hand and leaned back against the sofa. “From now on, when going to the medical station, the two of us must go together.”
Song Wenzhi’s fingertips paused. “Did I cause trouble for you?”
“Xiao Zhi, it’s no trouble.” Xia Weichi reached out and placed a hand on her shoulder, offering a gentle smile of comfort. “I’m glad you considered your own safety. In that situation, you had to have Yu Kunian come; that was the right choice. It’s just that Yu Kunian isn’t a member of the Institute; she can’t know too much, and it’s best if she has as little contact with those people as possible.”
For the sake of security, it was best if this matter only involved internal personnel from the Institute.
Song Wenzhi nodded. Xia Weichi sat up again and said softly, “I’m just glad you’re okay.”
And fortunately, Yu Kunian hadn’t messed up.
Xia Weichi did indeed have a prejudice against Yu Kunian, but in a situation concerning Song Wenzhi’s safety, if that Alpha could help and protect Song Wenzhi from harm, she would be grateful. “Get some rest. You’ve worked hard, Xiao Zhi.”
Closing the medical kit, Xia Weichi stood up to leave. Song Wenzhi walked her to the door. The Alpha suddenly remembered something and said before closing the door, “Yu Kunian’s driver agreement ends next week, doesn’t it?”
Song Wenzhi froze for a moment, and then her eyes dimmed. “Yes.”
“Then her time as an assistant will end on the same day the agreement does—five days total.” Xia Weichi wasn’t negotiating; she was deciding. “Xiao Zhi, next week you can cut off contact with that Alpha.”
Having Yu Kunian act as both driver and assistant brought her closer to Song Wenzhi. Xia Weichi knew Song Wenzhi would be swayed, but she had to help Song Wenzhi remain firm. Yu Kunian was not an Alpha worthy of trust; in Xia Weichi’s eyes, since Yu Kunian had lied once, she would lie countless times.
She felt it would be absurd to believe such a person could wake up and repent.
Song Wenzhi didn’t answer. She lowered her gaze, her fingertips unconsciously tightening their grip on the doorknob. A moment later, she heard Xia Weichi say again:
“Xiao Zhi, do not soften your heart.”
With that, Xia Weichi turned and left. Song Wenzhi stood in place for a long while before finally closing the door.
Yu Kunian felt like she had been on a streak of luck these past two days. Things were always developing in directions she hadn’t anticipated; not only had she entered the Research Institute, but her office was separated from Song Wenzhi’s by only a hallway.
At the Institute, she used the new name Song Wenzhi had made up—Andrea.
Although they were closer, Xia Weichi was always acting as an obstacle between them. Yu Kunian’s role as an assistant was merely a formality; she had nothing to do and mostly just passed the time. After Song Wenzhi explained the situation at the medical station that day, Yu Kunian had some suspicions. Even though she was still effectively excluded from the core of the Institute, she could guess a little based on her understanding of Song Wenzhi.
Yu Kunian didn’t care; she was currently focused on making her presence felt in front of Song Wenzhi. The advantage of “working together” was that it made it convenient for her to get closer to Song Wenzhi. Although the Omega appeared somewhat cold during work hours, she couldn’t block out the Alpha’s enthusiasm.
Soon, everyone at the Research Institute knew that “Andrea” was pursuing Song Wenzhi.
The rumors about Xia Weichi and Song Wenzhi getting married had also branched into several different versions. No matter how much Xia Weichi tried to interfere, there were always times when she was too busy to keep watch. Yu Kunian could always find an opportunity to walk openly into Song Wenzhi’s office. Seeing the Omega busy, she would casually tidy the vase on the desk.
The roses in the vase were still prominent. Yu Kunian had somehow found a few stalks of Eustoma and placed them inside as well. Since the office temperature was comfortable, the Alpha felt they would surely survive well.
Song Wenzhi looked up amidst her busy work, following Yu Kunian’s movements. “The flower shop across from the Institute doesn’t sell Eustoma in winter.”
“I have my ways.” Yu Kunian smiled at her, a hint of pride coloring her features.
It wasn’t just the shop across the street; several nearby shops didn’t have them either. Yu Kunian had put in quite a lot of effort to find them and brought them over immediately.
Song Wenzhi looked at the Alpha, but the words she wanted to say suddenly stalled. This week was passing quickly—so quickly that she herself was starting to feel panicked. Thinking of the time the agreement would end, the Omega felt an inexplicable sense of being at a loss.
Xia Weichi’s words constantly echoed in her ears. The Omega didn’t know what would happen if she softened her heart. Yet, even though the hesitation constantly gnawed at her thoughts, Song Wenzhi still knew that she would ultimately do as Xia Weichi said.
She still liked Yu Kunian, but that was no longer important.
But Yu Kunian noticed nothing. She was still smiling as she walked up to Song Wenzhi’s desk, her eyes curving as she asked, “Would you do me the honor of having dinner together later?”
