The Pursuit of Love After Divorcing My Cold Omega - Chapter 79
Did Song Wenzhi still think she was acting?
“Was I just—” Yu Kunian could not believe that Song Wenzhi’s sudden change just now had nothing to do with her, but before she could finish her question, she was interrupted by Song Wenzhi:
“It has nothing to do with you.”
The Omega didn’t look at her again. After a moment of silence, she added: “It’s my own reason, not you.”
Yu Kunian’s breath hitched. She kept her eyes fixed on Song Wenzhi. “Is that true?”
Song Wenzhi nodded. “Yes.”
Yu Kunian remained silent for a long while. Her gaze slowly moved from the Omega’s brows and eyes down to her lips. It was obvious that Song Wenzhi’s sudden shift in attitude was because of her, but since Song Wenzhi had said so, she could only respond: “That’s good then.”
Where exactly the “good” was, the Alpha did not know. Looking at the Omega’s face, which had suddenly grown indifferent, Yu Kunian felt a sense of powerlessness. It felt as if she had been pushed away once again; Song Wenzhi wouldn’t even look at her anymore.
Yu Kunian wondered even more whether Song Wenzhi still cared about her at all.
Even if she didn’t like her anymore, could she at least still care? Yu Kunian didn’t want to become a stranger who had no connection to Song Wenzhi, but she couldn’t judge her own weight in the Omega’s heart. Was her existence trivial? If she were to suddenly disappear, would it be nothing more than a drop in the ocean?
Yu Kunian pursed her lips, forcing down all her bitterness. She moved half a step closer. “Shall we find a seat and continue reading?”
Song Wenzhi instinctively stepped back.
Yu Kunian froze.
The Omega’s backward step wasn’t large; in fact, Yu Kunian could still touch Song Wenzhi’s shoulder with a reach of her hand. But Yu Kunian looked down at the distance between their toes in disbelief, feeling as if a wide river had suddenly surged between them.
In that moment, Yu Kunian couldn’t make a sound. Her throat was incredibly dry, and she couldn’t even lift her head to look at the Omega’s expression. Song Wenzhi’s resistance had never disappeared; Yu Kunian had only assumed she was getting closer, but in reality, the Omega had not accepted her approach.
“No need to read further. I’ll go register and just borrow this book,” Song Wenzhi told her, then turned away to check out the book.
Yu Kunian stood rooted to the spot for a long time before finally looking up at Song Wenzhi’s retreating back. A single tear fell from her reddened eyes, splashing onto the back of her own hand. She realized that Song Wenzhi hadn’t truly accepted her kindness—or rather, Song Wenzhi didn’t want to accept it at all.
Song Wenzhi wanted to stay away from her, from beginning to end.
The Omega’s wariness toward her had never dissipated. That one step back had pulled them apart both physically and emotionally.
Yet, this was how it should be, and it left Yu Kunian with nothing to say in her own defense. It was just that Yu Kunian didn’t understand—did her apologies and her remorse truly not deserve even a shred of trust from Song Wenzhi?
Even now, did Song Wenzhi still think she was acting? Yu Kunian’s brow furrowed slightly, her vision blurred by the moisture in her eyes. Her breath trembled, and she lowered her gaze again, trying to hide all her vulnerability.
Yu Kunian reached up to wipe the tear tracks from her cheeks and brushed away the hot tears at the corners of her eyes. Taking deep breaths to calm her ragged breathing, she slowly followed after Song Wenzhi. She couldn’t even ask, nor did she have any right to question Song Wenzhi’s abnormality, let alone whether Song Wenzhi could accept her concern.
Song Wenzhi had already finished borrowing the book. When Yu Kunian came down, she walked toward the parking area.
The two of them wordlessly avoided looking at each other, as if they shared a tacit understanding, but in reality, both were preoccupied with their own heavy thoughts. The relaxed atmosphere they had when they arrived was entirely gone, replaced by a weight hidden beneath their calm expressions. Yu Kunian did not speak; she fulfilled her duty as a driver, staying silent, as it was difficult to open her mouth at such a time.
An unusual silence enveloped them. All the traffic lights were green along the way, so there were no opportunities to stop the car and look at Song Wenzhi as she usually did. For a moment, Yu Kunian didn’t know whether to feel relieved or regretful.
The car soon stopped at the entrance of the research institute. Song Wenzhi held the book in her arms. Before getting out, she remembered something and said to Yu Kunian: “I won’t be working for the next two days, and there’s no need to pick me up tonight.”
Yu Kunian’s lips parted, her fingertips turning white from gripping the steering wheel too hard. She wanted to ask why, but the question never left her mouth. In the end, she could only nod and painfully utter a single word: “Okay.”
If Song Wenzhi no longer cared about her, then was her effort to get closer actually a burden to the Omega?
Sitting in the car and watching Song Wenzhi enter the institute, Yu Kunian’s expression remained grim. Thinking to no avail, she stayed for a moment before restarting the car and driving away. Cheng Lu’s phone call came shortly after she started moving. The gathering at the manor had ended, and since Cheng Lu hadn’t driven today, she wanted Yu Kunian to pick her up and take her back to the company.
Yu Kunian wore her earpiece, her tone less peaceful than before: “I have no obligation to specifically drive you back to the company. Get a taxi yourself.”
Cheng Lu chuckled twice. “Tsk tsk. President Yu is willing to ‘lower herself’ to be a driver for an Omega, but what, you aren’t even willing to give your friend a ride?”
Yu Kunian said: “President Cheng, you should know that your company and my home are in opposite directions.”
“So what?” Cheng Lu said dismissively. “You’ve had nothing to do lately anyway, and you’ve become quite skilled at being a driver. Why not be my driver once and let me enjoy President Yu’s service?”
Yu Kunian’s expression darkened. “When can you ever speak normally?”
Hearing this, Cheng Lu laughed again, saying teasingly: “Fine. President Yu, please come pick me up. I’m offering a high price for your services right now.”
“…” These sarcastic words made Yu Kunian grit her teeth, but the Alpha still turned the car around and headed toward the manor.
When Cheng Lu stood at the entrance and saw Yu Kunian drive up, she smiled triumphantly. She took the sunglasses from her head, put them on, and opened the passenger door. Even though Yu Kunian wanted her to sit in the back, Cheng Lu ignored her and sat in the front seat.
Cheng Lu quickly noticed that Yu Kunian was in a bad mood. Knowing exactly who was responsible, she couldn’t help but complain: “Being affected like this by an Omega… Yu Kunian, you are such an embarrassment to Alphas.”
Yu Kunian replied: “Don’t use your standards to represent all Alphas.”
“Please, do you know how popular Alphas are in New York? I’ve never seen an Alpha like you, completely infatuated with an Omega, and so… so shamelessly sticking to her.”
Yu Kunian expressed her doubt. “How many Alphas do you even know? There are plenty you haven’t seen.”
“Omegas are despicable and always use unscrupulous means to manipulate an Alpha’s emotions—just like you. In my eyes, that Song Wenzhi is just a devious Omega trying to control you for profit, and once you’re no longer useful, she’ll discard you.” Cheng Lu snorted. Although she hadn’t stopped Yu Kunian’s actions, she had always disliked Song Wenzhi in her heart.
Especially after coming to New York to start the alliance, Yu Kunian had pushed away all potential collaborations except for the research institute, all for the sake of Song Wenzhi. Now, Yu Kunian’s mind was filled with nothing but Song Wenzhi, and the maintenance of the alliance required significant funds. Yu Kunian was constantly spending more than she earned.
She had too much money to burn.
Yu Kunian glanced at her. “Zhizhi isn’t like that. Can you stop your ‘Anti-O’ syndrome from attacking everyone indiscriminately? I don’t expect you to say anything good about Zhizhi, but please, show some mercy with your words.”
Cheng Lu huffed. “I’m clearly just telling the truth.”
“You’re just making trouble, and I don’t have the energy to deal with you.” Yu Kunian was already feeling frustrated and had no time to argue these meaningless points with Cheng Lu. She was currently focused on what she should do next.
Hearing Yu Kunian’s words, Cheng Lu grew interested. “Weren’t things going well as a driver these past few days? Why the sudden bad mood today? Why don’t you tell me about it, and I’ll analyze it for you.”
“You’ve never even been in a relationship. What could you possibly analyze? It’s already good if you don’t make it worse.”
“Hey, it’s not like I don’t understand emotions. Why are you looking down on me? If you have a dilemma, I might be able to solve it completely.”
Yu Kunian looked at Cheng Lu for a few moments and, eventually deciding to treat it as a last-ditch effort, briefly explained the situation, including her concerns.
“Does she care about you?” Cheng Lu repeated her words with a frown. “Isn’t it simple to prove that?”
Yu Kunian pressed: “How?”
Cheng Lu said: “The ‘Self-Injury’ tactic. Try getting hurt and see if that Omega gets worried, if she cares about your injury and shows concern. If she does, then she definitely cares.”
“What kind of injury could I possibly get?” Yu Kunian couldn’t immediately think of how to carry out this tactic.
Cheng Lu pushed up her sunglasses. “That’s easy. A car accident or something. I think that would work quite well.”
Yu Kunian knit her brows. “…Are you sure?”
“If you’re worried about someone else hitting you, I’ll drive the car and hit you myself. It won’t be fatal. Although I can’t guarantee you won’t be crippled, there will definitely be injuries.” Cheng Lu patted her chest, indicating she was the perfect person for the job.
Yu Kunian slammed on the brakes. “…Are you sure this isn’t intentional harm?”
Cheng Lu said: “Now that you mention it, it kind of is.”
Yu Kunian fell into a long silence. She knew Cheng Lu was unreliable, yet she had actually considered letting Cheng Lu help solve her problem. However, perhaps this was a general direction to consider—though she didn’t necessarily have to be injured.
After dropping Cheng Lu off at her company, Yu Kunian impatiently drove back toward the research institute. She didn’t park near the institute, however. The Alpha found a random underground parking lot and then dived into a club that wasn’t very crowded for the afternoon session.
Yu Kunian’s alcohol tolerance wasn’t bad, but she wasn’t immune to it either. At the very least, if she drank a lot, her consciousness would become hazy and her thoughts would slow down. Yu Kunian had never let herself get truly drunk before; she wasn’t used to her actions being out of her control. Once the alcohol had completely numbed her mind, even she didn’t know what she might do.
But this time, Yu Kunian frantically poured drinks for herself, choosing the highest proof available. As night fell, she allowed herself to lose her composure.
Thus, when Song Wenzhi walked out of the research institute today—later than usual—the first thing she saw was Yu Kunian, crouching against a wall without any regard for her image, her head bowed. The Alpha had buried her head in her arms. She didn’t know how long she had been waiting there; she only remembered that she had to wait for someone.
