The Pursuit of Love After Divorcing My Cold Omega - Chapter 78
It wasn’t only Yu Kunian who would fall into the past.
Xia Weichi went to the Nianzhi Alliance to find the person in charge but was rejected once again. Not only had Yu Kunian failed to show her face at the Alliance recently, but she had also specifically instructed that if Xia Weichi came alone, they should not hesitate to shut her out immediately.
During the times when Xia Weichi was not with Song Wenzhi, Yu Kunian was seizing every possible opportunity to make her presence felt in front of the Omega.
Yu Kunian performed her role as a driver very professionally, and she always provided Song Wenzhi with care that was impossible to refuse: hot milk tea when the weather turned cold, and breakfast sets prepared like clockwork every day to make up for the meals the Omega didn’t have time to eat… Initially, Song Wenzhi did not want to interact too much with this driver, so she would pretend to sleep in the passenger seat every time. Later, Yu Kunian bought an eye mask to allow her to sleep more comfortably.
This made Song Wenzhi feel inevitably guilty, so she rarely feigned sleep after that.
During the first few days the Alpha started working as Song Wenzhi’s driver, the Omega didn’t pay much attention to her. Fortunately, perhaps out of habit later on, Song Wenzhi began to respond to the topics she initiated. Although her responses were still cold and indifferent, at least she was no longer so repelled by her. Yu Kunian felt this was a form of progress, proving that her constant care and attentiveness were having an effect. Consequently, she put even more effort into doing this hard-won job well.
An arrangement that originally only required commuting pick-ups was changed by Yu Kunian herself to being available whenever needed.
Although most of Song Wenzhi’s work took place at the research institute, there were occasional situations where she had to go out. For this type of field work, the institute would reimburse taxi expenses. However, since Yu Kunian became the driver, field trips were infrequent, and Song Wenzhi never had the chance to seek reimbursement again.
Sometimes Song Wenzhi wondered if Yu Kunian really had nothing to do in New York; otherwise, how could she have the time to wait for her needs constantly, and seemingly never feel impatient?
Even though Yu Kunian had explained to her that it was just a coincidence.
“Is today a coincidence as well?” Song Wenzhi needed to go to the library to find some materials on short notice. She discovered that Yu Kunian’s car had been parked at the research institute since they arrived in the morning and had not moved once.
Yu Kunian said, “I wasn’t waiting in the car. I just happened to have something to handle nearby and only noticed you coming out when I returned and was preparing to leave.”
Song Wenzhi didn’t quite believe what Yu Kunian was saying. “Where nearby?”
“The Mansion,” Yu Kunian answered quickly. The traffic light at the intersection turned red, and the car stopped. The Alpha continued to add, “There is a business gathering for the finance industry today, and I went with a friend. It was a bit boring, so I didn’t stay long.”
There was indeed a mansion not far from the research institute, and a business gathering was even less surprising. There was no need for Yu Kunian to lie. Song Wenzhi was silent for a moment and then gave an “Mm.”
“Wenzhi, do you feel that I—”
“Are you doing finance in New York?”
Before Yu Kunian could finish her question, she was interrupted by Song Wenzhi. The Alpha froze for a moment, shook her head, and said, “No. The business I handle hasn’t changed. It’s just that friend—her name is Cheng Lu, she’s in the finance industry. She wanted to introduce some people to me, so she dragged me along.”
Song Wenzhi understood. “Then you aren’t busy?”
The Omega had spoken more words to her today than ever before. For a moment, Yu Kunian pushed her previous question to the back of her mind. There was even a hint of a smile in her eyes as she said, “I’m not busy for the time being. My business hasn’t fully expanded yet; I’m still in negotiations with interested partners, so I’m relatively free.”
This “partner,” of course, was the research institute represented by Xia Weichi.
The green light turned on. Yu Kunian didn’t wait for Song Wenzhi to speak again and drove all the way to the library. Although Song Wenzhi’s expression still looked distant, the Alpha was already very satisfied. At least there wasn’t as much repulsion; the Omega even did not refuse her joining her inside the building to help search for books.
There were several reading rooms on the third floor. Yu Kunian and Song Wenzhi split up to search. The Omega gave Yu Kunian a sticky note with the book titles written on it. The Alpha lightly rubbed her finger over Song Wenzhi’s handwriting, remembering the signature at the bottom of that speech draft.
The Alpha’s heart shuddered. It was so quiet in the reading room that she could hear her own heartbeat clearly. The bit of a smile from earlier vanished completely. Yu Kunian’s fingertips turned white as she gripped the sticky note, her expression becoming somewhat gloomy.
“What are you dazed for?”
Song Wenzhi’s voice suddenly rang out, pulling Yu Kunian’s thoughts back and giving her a start. The Alpha instinctively turned her head toward the source of the sound, her eyes widening slightly. She unconsciously took half a step back, stumbling a bit.
Song Wenzhi stood before her, frowning. Seeing that she was about to fall backward, she reached out quickly to grab her, but she only caught the Alpha’s fingertips. Fortunately, Yu Kunian did not fall to the ground; she just froze in place. The sticky note was crumpled in her hand as her gaze met the Omega’s.
Her heart rate accelerated, echoing in her ears.
Yu Kunian’s breathing almost stopped. She opened her lips but made no sound. Her pupils flickered, and after a moment, she slowly looked down. Song Wenzhi’s hand was very warm, and this heat transferred to the skin of her fingers. It was only a brief touch, but for Yu Kunian, it was incredibly rare and a pleasant surprise.
Even though the Omega quickly withdrew her hand, Yu Kunian completely changed from her previous gloom and curled the corners of her lips again. She smiled and lowered her hand, gently stroking the spot that had just been touched, deeply lingering on the sensation.
Song Wenzhi looked away, not knowing what Yu Kunian was smiling about. She only cared whether the book she wanted was here. “Were you looking just now?”
Yu Kunian obviously hadn’t been. She rubbed the bridge of her nose and scanned the bookshelf in front of her. “The books here don’t belong to the pharmacy branch; that book shouldn’t be here.”
But just in case, Yu Kunian still looked through everything carefully to confirm.
They didn’t find it in any of the reading rooms on the third floor. Song Wenzhi had expected this; after all, the book she was looking for was not common and its classification was complicated, so it was reasonable for it to take some time. The books on the second floor were not within her scope of needs, so only the fourth floor remained. Song Wenzhi immediately left the reading room and went upstairs. Yu Kunian followed behind the Omega.
The fourth floor of this library had been under renovation recently and would close at three in the afternoon. Even when it was open during the day, there were only books in one borrowing room; everything else had been temporarily moved to other floors. Song Wenzhi entered the remaining borrowing room. The room was not spacious and had no place to sit; it was packed with bookshelves.
While helping with the search, Yu Kunian couldn’t help but keep looking at Song Wenzhi’s figure.
There were few opportunities to be in a room alone with Song Wenzhi like this, and they were very close, separated only by a bookshelf. Through the gaps between the books displayed in front of her, she was able to see the Omega’s serious expression.
She so badly wanted time to stop at this moment.
The Alpha felt very lucky. Leaving that financial business gathering had been a very right choice, and she had left just in time; otherwise, she wouldn’t have been able to get closer to Song Wenzhi today.
She tried to keep staring at the Omega, but after nearly being noticed by Song Wenzhi, she hurriedly withdrew her gaze, nervously clenched the sticky note, and obediently searched for the books.
Not long after, Yu Kunian pulled one of them out. “Wenzhi, I found it.”
Song Wenzhi walked toward her, reached out to take it, and flipped it open. “Thank you.”
It was hard for Yu Kunian not to be happy about helping Song Wenzhi, but this was clearly not a suitable place to read. “Let’s find a place to sit and read, Wenzhi.”
Song Wenzhi nodded. She had originally intended to go downstairs to find an empty seat, but there was an empty room next to the borrowing room that wasn’t locked. Yu Kunian pushed it open and thought it was very suitable. The Alpha mainly wanted to be alone in a room with Song Wenzhi; not only was there no one here, but there were also clean tables and chairs.
However, upon walking in, they discovered it was quite spacious. Opposite the tables and chairs sat a silent piano, which appeared to have been placed there temporarily.
Song Wenzhi didn’t care; she had already found a place to sit. Meanwhile, Yu Kunian stood still, staring at the piano for a long time. The fate of their reunion had begun with a piano, so Yu Kunian would always take extra notice. Today felt as if it were arranged by heaven, allowing her and Song Wenzhi to encounter a piano together once again. Yu Kunian couldn’t help but think of the past.
The past she had always lingered on and envied.
The Alpha didn’t go to Song Wenzhi’s side; instead, she walked to the piano and sat down. She put on headphones and played the piece that Song Wenzhi had heard her play at Lihua University. Yu Kunian knew it almost by heart. After Song Wenzhi left, she had replayed that day in her mind over and over again, reviewing this accidental yet deeply significant musical piece.
Could they… get back together because of this song?
The Alpha’s eyes grew red. Such an extravagant hope always enveloped her. Although the memories were beautiful, they were ultimately the past—bubbles that had burst long ago. Yu Kunian’s breath trembled. She stopped her hands and raised her eyes. When she looked in Song Wenzhi’s direction, she realized the Omega was also looking at her.
Although no sound came out, Song Wenzhi knew what Yu Kunian was playing. She could even remember where Yu Kunian would hit a wrong note and where she would play perfectly.
It wasn’t only Yu Kunian who would fall into the past.
At this moment, Song Wenzhi was in a trance, as if she were once again hearing what Yu Kunian played in the piano room. At that time, she had been expectant and excited because she saw the Alpha’s figure. Before discovering the deception, Song Wenzhi had been happy, without a doubt.
Even at this moment, she couldn’t focus on the book in her hand. Her eyes could only reflect Yu Kunian’s profile. She felt an impulse to get closer to Yu Kunian, but then she almost forgot that the Alpha only had designs on her. This repeated self-admonishment made it difficult for Song Wenzhi to calm her emotions. She was afraid of sinking again, worried that she would fall into the mire once more.
Song Wenzhi did not want to endure any more pain.
Thus, with her heart racing, the Omega suddenly stood up and left the place without looking back.
Yu Kunian’s pursuit was somewhat panicked. She didn’t know why Song Wenzhi had suddenly left with such a determined back. Song Wenzhi’s reaction left her at a loss because the Alpha had no way of judging whether she had done something wrong.
“Wenzhi?” Yu Kunian almost jogged to catch up. She couldn’t shout, so she lowered her voice, trying to get Song Wenzhi to stop.
Song Wenzhi’s footsteps paused. Her grip on the book tightened, and she lowered her eyes. After a moment, she turned to look at Yu Kunian. The Alpha looked apprehensive as she hurriedly asked, “Wenzhi, did I do something to make you angry?”
Song Wenzhi’s gaze remained on her for a long time without an answer.
She hadn’t done anything; that was exactly the problem—she hadn’t done anything. Yu Kunian had just played the piano. It was she herself who was overthinking, and she who clearly should have broken things off completely with Yu Kunian, yet had become conflicted because she couldn’t let go of this affection.
“No.” Song Wenzhi looked away, loathing herself for being this way. “I lost my composure.”
