The Pursuit of Love After Divorcing My Cold Omega - Chapter 72
She was jealous, but she had no right to be.
Yu Kunian froze for a moment at the sound of Xia Weichi’s voice. Before she could regain her senses, she reacted subconsciously, turning around and walking out of the research institute.
Song Wenzhi hurried down from the second floor, walked to Xia Weichi’s side, and responded, “Let’s go.”
Xia Weichi smiled and led her to the display stand. The table next to it was covered with many bouquets. “It looks like everyone is very happy to welcome you.”
There were several sticky notes attached to the stand—congratulatory messages written by colleagues who couldn’t hide their excitement. Song Wenzhi took them down to read, and her expression softened. She spoke slowly to the person beside her, “Thank you, Weichi.”
Song Wenzhi was not good at getting along with people quickly. If it weren’t for Xia Weichi, perhaps she wouldn’t have become acquainted with these people so fast.
“Don’t be polite with me; it’s what I should do,” Xia Weichi said with a gentle look. “You aren’t familiar with this place. Making more friends will make it easier to adapt.”
Song Wenzhi leaned over, her eyes lowering as she picked up a bouquet from the side. A few roses were exceptionally bright and beautiful. She sniffed them lightly. “Do all these flowers need to be taken back?”
Xia Weichi said, “You can leave them in the office if you like.”
Song Wenzhi nodded and put the flowers down after a moment. They were in a hurry to attend the project completion celebration and didn’t have much time to admire them now. She left the research institute with Xia Weichi, intending to walk there. Since the location of the celebration wasn’t far away, they didn’t notice the gaze of a certain Alpha nearby.
Yu Kunian didn’t know why she was hiding. Seeing Xia Weichi and Song Wenzhi walking side by side, her eyes dimmed, and her heart was filled with complex emotions.
Could Song Wenzhi… be okay without her?
The Alpha took a half-step back and withdrew her gaze. Her brow furrowed, and her breathing hitched. Xia Weichi certainly had the opportunity to step in. Their divorce was Xia Weichi’s best chance. Yu Kunian didn’t dare to think about whether Xia Weichi had already become Song Wenzhi’s Alpha, just as she suspected.
“Yu Kunian.”
Before she could reach a conclusion, Yu Kunian heard someone calling her from behind. She turned around to look—
An Alpha who seemed to have recently dyed her hair blonde was raising an eyebrow and sizing her up. The woman wore a white suit, black high heels, and had a pair of sunglasses hanging casually from her collar. She swung her handbag toward Yu Kunian and said again, “Don’t recognize me, President Yu?”
Cheng Lu.
Yu Kunian composed herself and approached Cheng Lu. “President Cheng, long time no see.”
They hadn’t seen each other in nearly ten years; at first glance, they might not have recognized each other immediately.
Cheng Lu curled her lips into a smile. “You’re too polite, Yu Kunian. Just call me by my name.”
Yu Kunian nodded. “How did you know I was here?”
“A guess. Jiang Qiu told me you should have arrived in New York by this time. One guess, and I knew you’d be here.”
Cheng Lu nonchalantly smoothed her wind-ruffled hair. Recently, Yu Kunian had asked her to look into an Omega named Song Wenzhi, and combined with a few things she’d heard from Jiang Qiu, she could more or less understand the general situation. Thus, guessing this wasn’t difficult.
However, what she couldn’t understand was why Yu Kunian was doing this for an Omega.
“Yu Kunian, you’ve changed.” Cheng Lu’s expression remained neutral, but her eyes narrowed as she looked at Yu Kunian. “Even though I’m usually in New York, I know a few things about you back home. You are famous in Lihua City. What kind of partner couldn’t you find? Why do you have to hang yourself on this one person? She’s just a troublesome Omega. What is there to like? Omegas as a whole are truly annoying.”
Yu Kunian didn’t want to explain much. “I don’t have Omega-phobia.”
If it weren’t for Song Wenzhi, Yu Kunian indeed wouldn’t have become so indecisive. She used to be decisive, never considering the consequences, but now, she couldn’t help but consider them. The moment the Alpha saw Song Wenzhi, all her emotions came to a standstill. Her longing converged on that Omega’s silhouette, and Yu Kunian had no choice but to hesitate.
Song Wenzhi seemed to be doing well; she didn’t want to ruin that.
Yu Kunian could no longer be as reckless as before. She didn’t want to push Song Wenzhi further away, nor did she want to be further away from her. She loved her, and so she hesitated.
She had also become less like the “President Yu” of the past.
“Omegas are nothing but trouble; it’s better not to interact with them. Besides, isn’t the fact that this Omega made you rush over here so desperately enough proof of her tactics?” Cheng Lu expressed her disdain for her behavior. In all her life, no one had ever made her lose her composure like this. Such a thing was simply a disgrace to Alphas. “Forget it, you’re already completely infatuated. There’s no point in talking to you. Let’s go and see your new home in New York.”
After speaking, Cheng Lu intended to lead the way, but Yu Kunian suddenly grabbed her. Yu Kunian frowned and said, “I haven’t eaten yet.”
Cheng Lu glanced at her. “…We can just find a restaurant on the way.”
“I want to go forward.” Yu Kunian pointed in the direction where Song Wenzhi and Xia Weichi had just left.
Cheng Lu said, “That’s the opposite direction. The further we walk, the further we get from your new home. What are you going there for?”
“To eat,” Yu Kunian said.
Cheng Lu looked at her strangely, thinking she was being rather odd, but since it was just a meal, she nodded and walked forward with Yu Kunian. To her surprise, Yu Kunian didn’t enter a restaurant, but instead went into a club—she wasn’t there to eat at all, but clearly to drink.
Before Cheng Lu could speak, Yu Kunian had already found a seat. Tonight, there was a live band playing in the club. It was quite crowded and noisy at this hour, yet Yu Kunian’s gaze searched the room, finally settling on a certain table in the upper right.
Cheng Lu ordered the drinks, only then realizing that Yu Kunian’s gaze had been fixed on one spot for a long time. She looked over and discovered Song Wenzhi’s figure.
Cheng Lu finally realized, “What ‘eating’ excuse? You clearly came here to watch someone. Do you have to be so transparent?”
“Is that a problem?” Yu Kunian said without even looking at her.
Cheng Lu didn’t care and looked away. “Suit yourself. But the light in here is terribly dim. Can you even see clearly? You might as well go up and say hello and sit together.”
“No,” Yu Kunian immediately rejected the idea. “Our relationship only recently broke down.”
“It’s precisely because it recently broke down that you should seize the opportunity. Otherwise, by the time your Omega forgets about you, appearing then will mean you’ve missed your chance.” Cheng Lu was once again puzzled by Yu Kunian’s reaction.
Only then did Yu Kunian look at her and say, “I’m not ready yet.”
Cheng Lu mocked her, “President Yu, since when did you become so timid and indecisive?”
“Don’t talk sarcastically; watch out that you don’t have a day like this too.”
“I don’t get involved with troublesome Omegas. No matter what, I won’t end up like you.”
Yu Kunian stopped responding to Cheng Lu. Despite the dim lights in the club, the Alpha kept her eyes fixed on Song Wenzhi’s back. That Omega she longed for—even just seeing her back was enough to feel satisfied.
Cheng Lu said no more and simply enjoyed the band’s performance. However, seeing that Yu Kunian’s gaze didn’t move for even a second, she shifted over to block Yu Kunian’s view and looked back as well.
“However, are you sure your Omega is still single?” Cheng Lu remembered something when she saw Xia Weichi.
Yu Kunian asked her, “What do you mean?”
Cheng Lu said, “I’m just reminding you. She and that Xia Weichi person are very close. You know they are almost inseparable. I’ve heard rumors from the research institute saying they are together, but it’s not certain—it might just be gossip.”
Yu Kunian’s grip on her wine glass tightened. Her eyes darkened, and her voice lowered a few notches. “It won’t be.”
But as things stood, Yu Kunian couldn’t be one hundred percent sure if it was just gossip.
Cheng Lu said, “Judge for yourself. I’m not a professional.”
Yu Kunian didn’t speak again. She bypassed Cheng Lu’s obstruction and watched Song Wenzhi and her group joyfully celebrate. Under the deafening music, the atmosphere remained high, but Song Wenzhi and Xia Weichi were the first to get up and leave.
When Song Wenzhi left the club, she passed even closer to Yu Kunian’s position, but she didn’t see Yu Kunian and walked out side by side with Xia Weichi. Yu Kunian followed them out a moment later, but she only saw them get into the same car, which quickly disappeared around the corner.
Yu Kunian’s team arrived in New York a few days later. They established the “Nianzhi Alliance” with CPP technology as its core. After obtaining the safety testing standards for commercial medical use, they were no longer limited to artistic applications and began to expand outward.
For Yu Kunian, the alliance now served only one purpose: to attract the research institute where Xia Weichi worked. As a new technology, CPP would certainly be noticed by the institute, but whether they would be interested in their technology was hard to say.
This was the only way Yu Kunian could find a reason to get close to Song Wenzhi.
But even a month after the alliance was established, Yu Kunian didn’t notice any movement from the research institute. In the process of observing Song Wenzhi and Xia Weichi, she still couldn’t find an answer to her questions.
Yu Kunian realized she was being greedy. She didn’t want to just watch Song Wenzhi from afar anymore; she desperately wanted to stand in front of Song Wenzhi and say a few words, and she desperately wanted to see that Omega up close… Yu Kunian was still afraid that she wasn’t important. She had never been this indecisive before.
Watching Song Wenzhi and Xia Weichi walk side by side every day, Yu Kunian could only constantly numb herself with the word “friends.”
She was jealous, but she had no right to be.
Yu Kunian thought she would have to stay hidden for a long time, but by the second month in New York, her longing was no less than it had been in Lihua City. She didn’t want to hide anymore.
The people from the research institute had another gathering tonight. This time, Yu Kunian entered the club alone. She drank a lot of alcohol, and in the end, she was a step behind when following Song Wenzhi and Xia Weichi out.
The weather was getting colder. As soon as Yu Kunian stepped out the door, the sharp, cold wind brushed against her cheeks. Her gaze slowly fell upon that Omega. Upon seeing Xia Weichi intimately wrapping a scarf around Song Wenzhi, the two of them standing very close, the string of her “reasoning” snapped completely.
The intoxication vanished instantly. Yu Kunian’s eyes were dark and hollow as she approached step by step, her eyes turning red for some reason.
No— Yu Kunian’s breathing grew erratic. This single thought echoed in her heart, and then the Alpha opened her mouth and softly called out: “Song Wenzhi…”
