The Pursuit of Love After Divorcing My Cold Omega - Chapter 71
I Miss Her Dearly
Yu Kunian’s admission left Jiang Qiu visibly stunned, causing her to forget the words she had been about to say. After a moment, she asked, “What did you say? To New York? So soon?”
Yu Kunian nodded. “Once things are resolved, I’ll leave.”
Hearing this, Jiang Qiu couldn’t help but ask, “Where are you right now?”
Yu Kunian replied, “Yin City.”
Jiang Qiu finally understood. “Why did you suddenly go to Yin City? I thought you were going to wait a while longer. Besides, today is New Year’s Eve. Why are you in such a rush? I couldn’t find you for half the day. Wouldn’t it be the same if you went in a couple of days?”
Yu Kunian looked up, her eyes reflecting the brilliant fireworks exploding in the sky. Her mood was no longer as bleak as before. “I can’t wait anymore.”
“A few days won’t make a difference, will they? Did Cheng Lu pressure you?”
“No.” Yu Kunian paused. The image of Song Wenzhi’s face surfaced in her mind, and she spoke again.
However, the roar of the crowd counting down nearby drowned out the second half of her sentence. Jiang Qiu couldn’t hear her and asked her to repeat it. After the countdown ended and the new year began amidst the cheers of the people around her, Yu Kunian spoke again:
“I said, I miss her.”
She missed Song Wenzhi—uncontrollably and beyond restraint. The longing wrapped around her like vines; the Alpha couldn’t break free, nor did she want to.
The sound of fireworks erupted again, and the excited shouts of those around her seemed to submerge the world. As laughter echoed down the street, the Alpha adjusted her scarf and repeated, “I miss her very much.”
Yu Kunian thought to herself that she had fallen for Song Wenzhi beyond redemption.
The moment she realized she was in love with that Omega, everything changed; nothing else mattered. Yu Kunian knew she couldn’t live without Song Wenzhi. Therefore, she had to leave. She had to go to New York.
To find Song Wenzhi.
Her longing and her day-and-night memories were an agonizing torture. Nothing could be more important than seeing Song Wenzhi again, even if just for a few glimpses. In her life, no one could compare to Song Wenzhi.
A cold wind whistled past, numbing the tip of Yu Kunian’s nose, but she seemed not to notice. Her furrowed brow relaxed, and her lips curled into a smile, even as the chilly air filled her mouth. This was the firmest decision she had made recently, and her happiest moment.
On the other end of the line, Jiang Qiu remained silent for a long while, unable to judge Yu Kunian’s decision. She simply asked, “Are you going to look for her?”
“I want to see her.” Yu Kunian didn’t know what else she could do, but she wanted to see the Omega she had been dreaming of first.
Jiang Qiu sighed. “She finally made up her mind to leave, and now you’re chasing after her… Kunian, she might not want to see you.”
Yu Kunian’s smile faded slightly. The Alpha lowered her eyes; of course she knew that Song Wenzhi likely wouldn’t want to see her again. “I know. But I’m still going.”
“What can you do once you get there?” Jiang Qiu’s tone grew a bit more urgent. “Kunian, you two are a thing of the past. If you insist on pestering her, the outcome won’t be any better than it is now—it might even be worse. You two broke things off so decisively recently; do you really think trying to win her back now will work?”
Yu Kunian’s brow twitched slightly, a flash of bitterness crossing her eyes. She murmured to herself, “Who knows?” She truly had no certainty, but regardless, it was better than a lifetime of silence and never seeing each other again. “I’ll only know if I try. I love her. I can’t forget her. I can’t be without her. So, I have to try. If I don’t even attempt to win her back, I’ll hate myself for the rest of my life.”
Jiang Qiu didn’t speak for a long time. She seemed to recall something but quickly snapped back to reality. “Then I wish you luck, Kunian. I’ll keep an eye on Zhaoming Biotech for you. Don’t worry about things here in Lihua City—when do you plan to leave?”
Yu Kunian smiled. “In a couple of days.”
After hanging up with Jiang Qiu, a call from Yang Yu surprised the Alpha. Yu Kunian answered and turned to walk away from the crowd. “Aunt, what is it?”
“Little Kunian, did you miss your aunt?” Yang Yu’s voice was full of excitement. “Your aunt will be arriving in Lihua City in about three hours! Remember to be ready to welcome me home. I brought lots of gifts for you and Little Wenzhi. I couldn’t make it to your wedding day, so let these gifts serve as compensation.”
Yu Kunian cleared her throat and lowered her voice. “Aunt, I’m not in Lihua City right now, and Zhizhi isn’t there anymore either. We… we got a divorce.”
“What?” Yang Yu gasped, the news hitting her like a thunderbolt. “Why did you divorce?”
“It’s my fault, Aunt, but I’ve decided to go find Zhizhi and win her back.” Yu Kunian briefly explained the situation, and as expected, she was met with a barrage of scolding from Yang Yu.
“I finally thought you had figured things out, and then you went and drove the Omega away! Little Kunian, didn’t I tell you…” While grumpily lecturing Yu Kunian, Yang Yu seemed to push someone away next to her, muttering, “Get away from me, don’t try to play it off, I haven’t forgiven you yet.”
Yang Yu had been married for a long time. Her Alpha partner was named Chang Rong. Yu Kunian had only met her a few times and remembered that the Alpha was younger than Yang Yu and was also an actor. In her memory, Chang Rong was a very quiet and taciturn person.
After huffing at Chang Rong in feigned anger, Yang Yu continued speaking to Yu Kunian: “Fine, just go and win her back. If you’re wrong, admit it. Compensation and apologies—neither can be missing. I won’t interfere in what’s between you two; you solve it yourselves. Since you’re not in Lihua today, when will you be back?”
Yu Kunian hailed a taxi to her booked hotel and replied, “I’m not coming back, Aunt.” After speaking, the Alpha suddenly remembered something and added, “Aunt, I might need you to do me a favor.”
Yang Yu happily accepted the request: “Go ahead, what do you need me to do?”
Yu Kunian said, “I’m going abroad, but if Mother and Mama find out, they definitely won’t agree.”
Before Yu Kunian could finish, Yang Yu understood. She chuckled, “You want me to cover for you? Of course. I’ll ensure your departure goes smoothly, don’t you worry.”
Yu Kunian: “Thank you, Aunt.”
“You’re welcome. How could I sit idly by when Little Kunian needs help?” Yang Yu sounded very proud of her own helpfulness. “Besides, it’s for Little Wenzhi.”
Yang Yu was very fond of Song Wenzhi. If she had known earlier that Yu Dai and Yang Jin were trying to set Yu Kunian up with Li Ci, she might have picked a fight. However, Yang Yu would likely find out once she got home, but Yu Kunian no longer cared about that.
Yu Kunian’s arrival in New York was a rushed affair. The original plan was to go abroad with the CPP technology team, but the day after the Alpha signed the cooperation agreement between Sizhong and Zhaoming Biotech, she impatiently boarded a plane alone, leaving the others to prepare and follow later.
Having asked Cheng Lu for the address of the research institute where Xia Weichi worked, Yu Kunian headed straight there from the airport without attending to anything else.
The darkening twilight of New York seemed no different from Lihua City. Yu Kunian didn’t have time to admire it before she came to a stop at a street corner opposite the institute. She stood there, wanting to step forward but afraid to do so.
Thinking of Jiang Qiu’s words, Yu Kunian couldn’t help but feel a surge of hesitation.
According to Cheng Lu, Song Wenzhi was now working as a senior project assistant to Xia Weichi, helping her manage projects at the institute. The two were almost always together, whether on or off duty.
Perhaps Song Wenzhi’s life had already gotten on the right track in this new place, and Yu Kunian’s arrival—whether for better or worse—would only disrupt her new trajectory. Thus, the Alpha hesitated between approaching her directly or just stealing a glance from afar.
Yu Kunian was also not yet prepared to disturb Song Wenzhi.
She had considered every possibility of being rejected or pushed away, but even now, she didn’t know what the first thing she should say to Song Wenzhi would be.
What words would make Song Wenzhi willing to give her a chance?
Yu Kunian didn’t know.
She was simply driven to the brink of madness by days without Song Wenzhi. Coming here now, she would be satisfied even if she could just catch a secret glimpse. The Alpha’s hopes were unplanned; it was only upon reaching New York that she realized she had acted on impulse and hadn’t thought things through. Her heart was filled with nerves.
According to the information Cheng Lu had sent her, Xia Weichi and Song Wenzhi hadn’t been leaving the institute at their usual time lately. They had just finished a medical research project and were working on reports, so they would be leaving later.
Near where Yu Kunian stood was a flower shop. She hadn’t been listening intentionally, but because she heard Song Wenzhi’s name, she instinctively looked over. She saw a few Betas gathered together picking out bouquets. Yu Kunian was certain the person they were discussing was Song Wenzhi.
The Alpha approached, pretending to browse flowers while eavesdropping. She learned that today marked the end of Song Wenzhi’s probationary period at the institute. These people were fellow researchers planning to buy flowers to place in a designated area on the first floor to congratulate Song Wenzhi on officially joining the institute.
It was only after those people had made their choices and left that Yu Kunian snapped out of it.
She looked back toward the institute, her expression unreadable. A moment later, a shop assistant spoke to her, and Yu Kunian realized she had unconsciously picked out flowers. Since the shop didn’t have Eustoma, Yu Kunian added several bouquets of roses to her selection and checked out.
Exiting the shop, Yu Kunian looked down and smelled the fragrance of the flowers before walking toward the institute.
On the first floor, there was a designated area to celebrate Song Wenzhi. Yu Kunian stood there, staring at a display stand featuring the Omega’s photo and introduction, momentarily lost in thought. Song Wenzhi seemed to have changed, yet she seemed the same. Yu Kunian’s breathing grew ragged as she leaned over to place her flowers in an inconspicuous spot.
The lights on the first floor were bright enough for Yu Kunian to see Song Wenzhi’s face clearly on the stand. She instinctively reached out to touch it, but suddenly, Xia Weichi’s familiar voice rang out:
“Zhizhi, we need to hurry a bit.”
