The Pursuit of Love After Divorcing My Cold Omega - Chapter 53
“I have been waiting for you to tell me yourself.”
“Zhizhi—”
“Yu Kunian.”
Song Wenzhi interrupted the Alpha’s words. She gripped her slightly trembling fingertips and lifted her eyes to look at Yu Kunian, feigning a calm gaze.
The Omega’s expression appeared normal. The more flustered she felt inside, the calmer she became on the surface, even as a stormy sea raged in her heart. Song Wenzhi knew she was maintaining her collapsed self-esteem—the dignity she had only gradually rebuilt after arriving in Lihua City.
No one here knew her past. Song Wenzhi thought she could completely sever ties with her history or perhaps find her true self in Lihua City. During the years she spent in Yin City, she had lived in a daze, not knowing who she was supposed to be; she only wanted to escape.
Her family was a nightmare—a haunting and terrifying dream that followed her like a shadow, clinging to her and making it impossible for the Omega to let go.
Why her?
In countless nights, Song Wenzhi had asked herself this.
She had never done anything wrong, so why was it her?
She had even thought she was close to forgetting the past, but the facts proved it was impossible. Song Wenzhi’s breathing became shaky. She lowered her head again, her neatly styled hair appearing disheveled in this moment.
For the first time, Yu Kunian felt that the Omega’s figure looked incredibly frail.
The Alpha heard Song Wenzhi say, “Don’t get involved.” The Omega’s voice was hoarse and low. After speaking, she paused for a moment, as if strengthening a resolve, and repeated: “Yu Kunian, don’t get involved anymore. That is my own business.”
Yu Kunian walked closer to her, her voice softening as she spoke, “Zhizhi, I can’t do that.”
Hearing this, Song Wenzhi looked up. Her gaze instinctively flickered away, but Yu Kunian continued to look at her steadfastly. Song Wenzhi didn’t know why, but she felt that her image must have crumbled in Yu Kunian’s eyes.
She was no longer the exceptionally brilliant Professor Song of Lihua University, nor the Omega praised by everyone; she had a terrible family and a somewhat sordid background.
Even though Yu Kunian had known for a long time, Song Wenzhi had only just realized that the “good image” she thought she held had been seen through from the very beginning. If she and Yu Kunian were merely strangers, she probably wouldn’t be overthinking like this. But she was married to Yu Kunian, and a specialized, indescribable pride had taken root.
She even despised herself for being this way, but she couldn’t help it. She wanted to be as perfect as possible in Yu Kunian’s eyes.
Yu Kunian simply approached her, reaching out to take hold of her cold fingertips. The Alpha lowered her head and kissed her knuckles as she often did. But this time, Yu Kunian lingered for a long time, exhaling gently, trying to warm the Omega’s hand.
Song Wenzhi couldn’t pull her hand away, and then she heard Yu Kunian continue: “Zhizhi, why do you feel ashamed? Regarding the debt, I have been waiting for you to tell me yourself.”
Yu Kunian had thought she was different from Xia Weichi.
But looking at it now, both she and Xia Weichi were people close to Song Wenzhi, yet Song Wenzhi stubbornly refused to accept their help.
Song Wenzhi’s movements froze. Her furrowed brows relaxed slightly, and she forgot to look away, her eyes meeting Yu Kunian’s gaze once more. The Omega’s heart trembled. The Alpha before her gave a gentle smile and continued:
“We should share each other’s burdens, shouldn’t we? Our marriage is legal. Resolving your problems is, I feel, my responsibility. At the very least, you should have told me that there was a problem troubling you all this time. It makes you unhappy, makes you cautious, and makes you feel burdened… You should have told me, Zhizhi.”
The Alpha’s voice was soft, her eyes reflecting Song Wenzhi’s figure. In those amber pupils, an undeniable heartache had emerged at some unknown point.
“I want to hear about these worries from you. Zhizhi, to me, these things that trouble you are never a nuisance. The debt is not a thorny issue; the fact that you are constantly carrying this pressure is. So, I cannot ignore it.”
Yu Kunian slowly finished these words. She smoothed Song Wenzhi’s messy hair and then pulled the Omega into an embrace.
She could not stay out of it, because this had been Song Wenzhi’s long-standing distress.
The Alpha’s embrace was always warm. Song Wenzhi stood dazed for a moment. It wasn’t until she caught the scent of mint that she regained her senses and said, “Yu Kunian, I don’t need…”
She didn’t need anyone’s “pity.”
She could have originally handled this matter herself.
“Zhizhi, don’t reject me.” Yu Kunian wanted to help her. “The debt won’t affect anything about you, because it isn’t your problem. It’s just a small matter; I will resolve it. You don’t need to worry because of this.”
Yu Kunian could indeed handle those debts easily. Song Wenzhi knew this. She lowered her eyes and spoke again: “Yu Kunian, you are too good to me.”
So good that she didn’t know if she truly was—as Yang Jin had said—unmatched for her.
“Zhizhi, that’s because you are worth it.” Yu Kunian released her, reaching out to cup her cheeks. As if understanding Song Wenzhi’s hesitation, she looked at her earnestly and said:
“You are a professor specifically headhunted by Lihua University. Your talent and strength are both outstanding. Zhizhi, do not deny yourself. No matter what your family is like, in my eyes, you are not terrible. On the contrary, you are excellent. To me, you always come first; no one can compare to you.”
Yu Kunian wanted Song Wenzhi to know that nothing would change her opinion of her.
Those things weren’t Song Wenzhi’s fault, so why feel ashamed?
Song Wenzhi looked at Yu Kunian. She confirmed again and again that she could be completely open—even about her flaws and imperfections—and be fully accepted, while Yu Kunian would praise her without stinting.
Just as she could accept everything about Yu Kunian, though she hadn’t seen many of Yu Kunian’s flaws yet. They were to live together for many years, after all; they would eventually understand each other one hundred percent.
Song Wenzhi took the initiative to hug Yu Kunian. she wrapped her arms around the Alpha’s waist, her palms resting on Yu Kunian’s back. She closed her eyes and whispered: “Okay, I understand.”
Yu Kunian breathed a sigh of relief and held the Omega tighter. “In a few days, I’ll find some time to accompany you back to Yin City to settle those debts, okay?”
Song Wenzhi didn’t refuse again. She gave an “mhm” and then whispered a small “thank you.”
Yu Kunian didn’t respond to the thanks. Instead, she placed several light, fleeting kisses on the back of the Omega’s neck. Their hearts were closer now. Perhaps because the biggest knot had been untied, Song Wenzhi no longer felt the burden. She could finally open her heart and tell Yu Kunian about her previously terrible life of debt.
From being a “crazy worker” in Yin City to the well-known “desperate professor” at Lihua University, Song Wenzhi had never dared to relax. But today, she laid everything down and felt an incredible sense of relief.
Yu Kunian listened patiently as she spoke of those miscellaneous trifles. They sat on the sofa, leaning close to each other. The heartache in the Alpha’s eyes had yet to fade; listening to the exhaustion the Omega had endured over the years, she even thought again that it would have been better if she had met Song Wenzhi earlier.
It wasn’t until the sky grew dark that they realized they were hungry. Yu Kunian’s cooking skills had improved recently, but not by much. Her performance was hit-or-miss, and the taste wasn’t particularly great, so Song Wenzhi did most of the cooking while Yu Kunian helped out.
Today, however, neither of them felt like cooking, so they ordered delivery.
While waiting for the food to arrive, Yu Kunian and Song Wenzhi went to the balcony. The potted plants looked vibrant, though it was unclear when they would bloom. Yu Kunian held Song Wenzhi as they sat on the lounge chair, pointing to one of the plants: “I bet this one will bloom first.”
Song Wenzhi took her finger and moved it, stopping at the one next to it, saying: “I think it will be this one.”
Yu Kunian hadn’t looked after the plants and had indeed been guessing blindly. Hearing Song Wenzhi say this, she immediately changed her guess: “Then I guess it’s that one too.”
Song Wenzhi laughed softly, causing Yu Kunian to raise an eyebrow. She lowered her head to kiss the corner of the Omega’s mouth, asking in a muffled voice what she was laughing at. Song Wenzhi didn’t speak. She propped herself up slightly, her hair falling over Yu Kunian’s shoulder. The smile in her eyes was undeniable as she met Yu Kunian’s gaze for a long time before finally saying:
“That is a species that doesn’t bloom, Yu Kunian.”
Song Wenzhi’s joke took Yu Kunian by surprise. She glanced at the plant but couldn’t tell anything about it; since she didn’t recognize it, how would she know if it bloomed or not? But with Song Wenzhi’s laughter still in her ears, the Alpha curled her lips. “Zhizhi, you’re lying—”
Before she could finish, the Omega lowered her head first and kissed her lips.
The sky darkened, filled with dark clouds. A layer of humidity gradually enveloped the air; it would likely rain soon. However, Yu Kunian’s mood felt as though it were still a sunny day.
The kiss didn’t last long. Yu Kunian’s fingertips brushed against Song Wenzhi’s waist, the warm sensation seeming to penetrate the fabric into her skin. The Omega said, “Yu Kunian, when one of these plants blooms, I will give you a gift.”
“So mysterious?” Yu Kunian laughed. “Then I must take good care of these plants. I look forward to Zhizhi’s gift.”
Song Wenzhi said, “It’s just a small gift. Don’t set your expectations too high.”
Yu Kunian: “As long as it’s from you, even the smallest gift deserves the highest expectations.”
Yu Kunian nuzzled Song Wenzhi’s cheek. No matter what Song Wenzhi gave her, she would love it.
By the look of things, at least one of these plants should be blooming soon. After all, when they were bought, Song Wenzhi had skipped the varieties that took a long time to flower. Yu Kunian couldn’t help but begin to guess what the Omega had prepared for her, even wishing she could have it right now.
If there were no company matters to worry about, Yu Kunian thought, they would still be abroad enjoying their honeymoon. They could have slept in together as a matter of course, rather than feeling anxious as they did now.
Yu Kunian pulled Song Wenzhi into her arms. She looked up at the grey, overcast sky, and her heart couldn’t help but sink a little. Although the smile remained on her lips, it had faded somewhat from her eyes.
It seemed that Lihua City would be seeing cloudy and rainy days for the next few days.
She didn’t know if what was hidden beneath those dark clouds were bolts of lightning or a fleeting torrential rain, but for Yu Kunian, this weather wasn’t great—after all, she couldn’t see the sun.
