The Pursuit of Love After Divorcing My Cold Omega - Chapter 52
I am Capable and Willing to Repay it for Zhizhi
Yu Kunian’s return to the company was purely accidental. Song Wenzhi’s vacation had not yet ended, so she didn’t have to go to work for the time being, but Yu Kunian had been incredibly busy lately, leaving early and returning late.
The previous business issue seemed unresolved. Song Wenzhi learned from the Alpha that it was a problem caused by a breach of contract by a partner company. It wasn’t difficult to solve, but it was time-consuming. Yu Kunian said she had been negotiating with the defaulting party recently regarding the breach, and it might require litigation.
Song Wenzhi didn’t understand much about these things, but since Yu Kunian said it wasn’t a big deal, she didn’t worry too much. She didn’t want to disturb Yu Kunian’s work, thinking only of spending the rest of their original travel plan in Lihua City once the contract issue was settled.
However, she didn’t expect to receive a phone call from that person.
—Her Beta mother.
Song Wenzhi didn’t know what kind of attitude she should use to face this woman, Ms. Zheng Wan. She resented her, yet subconsciously worried about her.
The Omega had deliberately reduced contact for many years. Zheng Wan had been sending her all sorts of messages, which she would read but never reply to. Although she allowed the messages to come through, it didn’t mean she could let go. Song Wenzhi always felt her feelings for Zheng Wan were complicated; there was perhaps a trace of hatred because she could never truly forgive her Beta mother.
If Zheng Wan had been slightly less selfish back then, would her physical condition be a little better now?
Song Wenzhi often found herself re-imagining events that had long since passed. She couldn’t forget that laboratory, those strange instruments, and the sound of the equipment that still triggered a conditioned reflex in her to this day… If there really were an “if,” she wouldn’t have relied on high-potency suppressants for years, leading to the gradual damage of her glands. That was a choice she had no alternative but to make.
Her family had started out self-sufficient, but later fell into debt. The beginning of the change—Song Wenzhi remembered—was a day when it rained heavily in Yin City, the same day that Alpha was sentenced.
Life became harder, yet Song Wenzhi felt fortunate.
Fortunate that she would never have to see those laboratories or those chaotic instruments again.
Zheng Wan watched sadly as that Alpha was sentenced. Song Wenzhi wasn’t present, but she knew what would happen. At that time, the Omega had first stood under the eaves to avoid the rain, but later she slowly walked out, stopping right under the downpour.
She allowed the rain to soak her, drenching her to the bone.
Song Wenzhi’s physical condition had been very poor before Xia Weichi helped her regulate it. She hadn’t stayed in the rain for long that night, but she still developed a high fever.
When she woke up, Zheng Wan was taking care of her, her eyes swollen like walnuts from crying. She then tearfully said many things to Song Wenzhi. It was all about the family being in debt and the house needing to be sold, but through all the talking, Zheng Wan never uttered a single apology to her.
So, Song Wenzhi felt she should be resentful.
But looking at Zheng Wan’s haggard face, the Omega knew that they only had each other left.
Later, Song Wenzhi transferred to another school, and Zheng Wan supported her continued education. They spoke very little. Zheng Wan likely felt guilt toward her, but never spoke it aloud. Song Wenzhi was still well-cultivated; no matter how tight the family savings were, Zheng Wan would not end her education.
Everything in the house had been sold off except for that piano. Zheng Wan kept it for a long time; if there had been any other way, she wouldn’t have sold it. Song Wenzhi loved the piano. Every piece she knew how to play had been personally taught to her by Zheng Wan, and it was the Omega’s only solace at that time.
Song Wenzhi remembered Zheng Wan’s selfishness, but she also remembered her kindness.
Thus, Song Wenzhi preferred to escape. She didn’t want to figure out exactly what attitude she should hold toward Ms. Zheng Wan.
Song Wenzhi could sense that Zheng Wan wanted to make amends, but the damage she had suffered could never be repaired, no matter how much time passed. Zheng Wan likely knew this too, and after Song Wenzhi left Yin City to develop her career in Lihua City, she didn’t interfere much and wouldn’t call her.
So, when she saw that familiar contact today, Song Wenzhi was stunned. But once she regained her senses, she still answered the phone.
Zheng Wan’s voice was very light, and her inquiry sounded more like a statement: “Wenzhi, you got married. Why didn’t you tell your mother?”
Zheng Wan didn’t scold her; she just felt it was a pity that she knew nothing about such a major life event as marriage.
Song Wenzhi was silent for a moment. She sat on the sofa, her breath hitching before she asked, “Who told you?”
Zheng Wan didn’t answer. The silence on the line lasted even longer than before. The environment on Zheng Wan’s end was noisy with the loud sound of traffic; she must be out on the street.
Just as the Omega was about to ask again, Zheng Wan suddenly said, “Wenzhi, Mama doesn’t mean anything else, I just thought I should send you a wedding gift. But I don’t know how to choose… and now I don’t know what you like anymore, so I actually wanted to ask for your opinion.”
“I don’t need it.” Song Wenzhi’s eyelashes trembled slightly. She lowered her eyes and spoke, “Where did you get news of me from?”
Zheng Wan said, “Wenzhi, last time when you were backstage at the concert, you told me you were in a relationship. Is the Alpha from that day your current wife? If so, that’s very good. Mama caught a few glimpses from a distance then—although I don’t know her, it’s fine as long as you like her. Besides, Mama isn’t busy lately. If I had known you were holding a wedding, I could have made it there to attend…”
Zheng Wan was always like this, everything she said sounded like nagging. She didn’t even seem to intend to get an answer from Song Wenzhi; she just wanted to finish her words and then avoid answering other questions.
Song Wenzhi stopped speaking, letting Zheng Wan talk to herself for a long while, just listening quietly. It wasn’t until Zheng Wan brought up the debt that her voice took on a crying tone again, asking if Song Wenzhi was very tired and caring about whether she was doing well.
Most of the debt was now being carried by Song Wenzhi. Zheng Wan’s salary was not high, barely enough to cover her daily expenses and rent. Song Wenzhi was indeed very tired; even with the generous salary from Lihua University, she had to work desperately hard.
“I’ve burdened you…” Zheng Wan’s words were almost incomplete as she sobbed. “Mama wants you to live well. That Alpha’s family background is good; with her, you won’t be dragged down by the debt anymore. Wenzhi, you must stay with her properly. No matter what happens in the future, do not leave her. You must cling tightly to this ‘high branch’.”
Zheng Wan’s words felt like a heavy hammer striking the Omega’s heart. Song Wenzhi froze. She opened her mouth, her brow furrowing deeply as she questioned again: “Who told you this?”
Her marriage to Yu Kunian had never been because Yu Kunian could solve her debt problems. It was because of love—one hundred percent love. But Zheng Wan’s words seemed to negate all of her emotions; because of the Alpha’s family background and that crushing debt, Song Wenzhi’s love was turned into “social climbing.”
Resentment rose in Song Wenzhi’s heart. She felt indignant and powerless against such a judgment. The debt issue was her own business no matter what; the Omega would never involve Yu Kunian. This was the dignity she wanted to maintain and her last bit of stubbornness.
No matter how tired her life was, she needed no charity. She would pay off the debt herself.
Song Wenzhi tried to get an answer out of Zheng Wan, but a sudden knock at the door interrupted her questioning. As the Omega stood up to open the door, Zheng Wan also hung up the phone, forcing Song Wenzhi to temporarily give up her inquiry as she went to the door first.
The person at the door was unexpected: Yang Jin.
A smile hung on Yang Jin’s face, but her eyes were full of detachment. Song Wenzhi invited her in, caught off guard by her arrival since Yu Kunian hadn’t sent her any message about this.
Yang Jin sat down on the sofa without ceremony, having no intention of drinking water. She skipped the pleasantries and spoke bluntly: “Miss Song, let’s not beat around the bush. I have already contacted your mother. She took the benefits I offered and accepted that you and Niannian will separate. Your mother, Ms. Zheng, has made the decision for you.”
Song Wenzhi looked at her, thinking of what Zheng Wan had just said. Zheng Wan clearly had no intention of letting her separate from the Alpha; on the contrary, she wanted her to never leave Yu Kunian.
“My mother’s decision has nothing to do with me,” Song Wenzhi said, without offering an explanation.
“But she accepted the ‘remuneration’ I gave her.” Yang Jin was still smiling, though she looked extremely hypocritical now.
Now Song Wenzhi understood how Zheng Wan had found out about her marriage. She did not approve of Zheng Wan’s behavior, nor did she feel that Zheng Wan could make any decisions on her behalf.
Regarding this, Yang Jin expressed no surprise. She felt that with Song Wenzhi’s family background, she wouldn’t be the type to quit while she was ahead, but that enough benefits would eventually work.
However, Song Wenzhi’s reaction was clearly completely different from what Yang Jin had expected.
When Yu Kunian returned home, she saw the scene of Yang Jin confronting Song Wenzhi. The Alpha immediately walked over upon seeing Yang Jin, pulling Song Wenzhi behind her before asking with a displeased expression, “What is going on?”
Yang Jin and Yu Dai knew the address of this place, but because of the Alpha’s previous warnings, they had never visited. Yang Jin likely assumed Yu Kunian would be busy at the company until late today and hadn’t expected her to leave work early.
After Yu Kunian finished speaking, she turned to look at Song Wenzhi. Only after ensuring the Omega was alright did she feel relieved. Meeting Song Wenzhi’s gaze, the Alpha frowned and said in a low voice, “I’ll handle this, don’t worry.”
Yang Jin’s expression faltered for a moment, but she quickly regained her smile. “Niannian, I am helping you solve a problem.”
“Mom, I didn’t give you permission to come here.” Yu Kunian was clearly uninterested in what she came here to do, or perhaps she already knew what Yang Jin would do.
It was nothing more than obstructing their marriage.
It seemed Yu Dai and Yang Jin had not yet given up.
Having lost face, Yang Jin’s expression was naturally not good, but she still explained in short sentences: “Niannian, have you looked into Miss Song’s family? She has been hiding things from you. She has designs on you; she is not a good Omega.”
Yu Kunian refuted her without hesitation: “Zhizhi told me. Mom, you don’t need to sow discord in our relationship here. Please leave.”
“Told you what?” Yang Jin’s tone involuntarily deepened. She didn’t believe Song Wenzhi had been completely honest with Yu Kunian. “Do you know why her family fell into debt, and how much debt there is still left to pay?”
Song Wenzhi hadn’t expected Yang Jin to know this. Her heart suddenly tightened, and she instinctively looked at Yu Kunian. The Alpha didn’t turn her head to look back at her. The Omega’s heart began to race; she was afraid of seeing a questioning look from Yu Kunian, afraid that the gaze the Alpha directed at her would contain a hint of disgust.
But none of that happened.
Not long after Yang Jin finished speaking, Song Wenzhi heard Yu Kunian say in a very flat tone—she wasn’t even surprised—she only said: “I know. I am capable and willing to repay those for Zhizhi.”
Yu Kunian knew.
Song Wenzhi felt as if she had been struck by a bolt from the blue; she froze where she stood.
The things she was unwilling to reveal, the things she regarded as a stain on her record, had long since been known by Yu Kunian.
Song Wenzhi didn’t know when Yang Jin left, and she didn’t even hear what Yu Kunian said afterward. She was just suddenly in a daze, realizing that it was as if she had no secrets left at all.
She had always thought she had hidden it very well.
It wasn’t until Yu Kunian pulled her into an embrace and concerned calls rang in her ears that the Omega’s fingertips trembled. She snapped back to reality and broke free from the Alpha’s arms.
Song Wenzhi took half a step back and looked at Yu Kunian, asking, “When did you find out?”
Yu Kunian’s expression became unnatural. She lowered her eyes before answering softly, “A few days after we met in the piano room.”
Song Wenzhi understood. It was a very simple matter for Yu Kunian to investigate her, especially since the news regarding that debt was very famous in Yin City.
