- Chapter 7 - The Alluring Movie Queen & The Gloomy Heiress
Early the next morning, just as dawn was breaking.
Xiao Mi woke from her sleep, stretched lazily, and then pressed her nose close to Ye Zhixia’s cheek, sniffing for a while.
Ye Zhixia, tickled by Xiao Mi’s whiskers, pushed the cat’s head away without even opening her eyes.
“It’s not even light out yet, Xiao Mi. What are you doing?” Her voice was laced with irritation.
Xiao Mi paced back and forth on the soft blanket. “Xia Xia, I can’t wait to interrogate the prisoner!”
Ye Zhixia struggled to sit up, grumbling, “If I were half as enthusiastic about work as you are, I’d be the bureau chief by now!”
Inside the spatial prison, the middle-aged man who had been locked up for a day and two nights was nearly driven mad with fear.
The prison was utterly silent, surrounded by cold concrete and mirrors, the only light coming from a dim yellow bulb in the center of the room. Staying in such an environment for too long would leave anyone anxious and unsettled.
Xiao Mi transformed into a little girl of about seven or eight, holding a whip as she pushed open the door to the room.
Blinding white light from outside the space flooded the man’s face.
Squinting and turning his head away, he looked toward the doorway where Xiao Mi stood. After just a day and two nights, the man’s chin was already covered in stubble, his entire face looking haggard.
Xiao Mi gave a slight nod toward the mirror. Behind the one-way glass, Ye Zhixia, sipping coffee to wake herself up, chuckled softly. Xiao Mi actually looked quite professional interrogating a prisoner for the first time.
Crack! Xiao Mi’s whip struck the ground hard, startling the man.
Terrified and confused, the man wondered what this tiny girl, no bigger than a booger planned to do to him with that whip.
“Sit over there!” Xiao Mi commanded, pointing to a steel table in the center of the room.
The man obediently took a seat on one side of the table.
Xiao Mi crossed her arms and lifted her chin high.
“Li Qiang, right? Talk! Who ordered you to harm that girl? You’d better be honest, or you’ll never leave this place.”
The middle-aged man, Li Qiang, didn’t doubt Xiao Mi’s words. Over the past few days, he had tried everything to escape the room, but the door was sealed shut. He had even attempted to break through the mirror, but it was all futile.
With a pitiful expression, he stammered, “I… I’m just a poor man. My mother’s in the hospital, waiting for me to bring money back for her surgery. Then someone contacted me, saying if I did this one job, they’d give me 200,000…”
Xiao Mi’s eyes flashed with fury at his excuse. She strode over and lashed the whip across his back. “What mother?!”
Before entering the space, she had already pulled Li Qiang’s personal records. His parents had died long ago.
The whip tore through Li Qiang’s clothes, leaving a bloody welt on his back.
Gritting his teeth against the pain, he quickly assessed how much the little girl knew. At this point, his only option was to come clean.
“Hiss, I owe a loan shark 500,000. A few days ago, someone approached me and said if I took that girl to a hotel during the graduation ceremony, they’d clear my debt and give me an extra 200,000.”
“I figured even if I got caught, the worst that could happen was seven years in prison free food, free lodging, and I’d still make money…”
Xiao Mi stared at him coldly, her childish voice dripping with menace. “You think you’d get to enjoy seven cozy years in prison? Do you even know who that girl is?”
Li Qiang jerked his head up upon hearing this. When he was brought to the hotel, he had also sensed something was off, but at the time, his mind had been clouded by greed, and he hadn’t given it much thought.
Now, he was finally sober. A high-end hotel like Ruihua wouldn’t cater to ordinary guests.
Seeing him frozen in place, Xiao Mi took out her phone and showed him a screenshot of a trending topic on Weibo.
“Chu… the Chu family heiress…” the middle-aged man stammered as he read the headline.
Xiao Mi giggled. “Do you still think you can walk away with the money and live happily ever after?”
“Confess who hired you, and I might still be able to help you.”
Li Qiang’s mind was a mess, but when he looked at the little girl in front of him, he couldn’t help but scoff. “What can a kid like you possibly do for me?”
Xiao Mi slowly stepped closer to Li Qiang, grinning mischievously. “If you don’t cooperate, I’ll have no choice but to hand you over to the Chu family.”
At the mention of “handing him over to the Chu family,” Li Qiang tensed up immediately. Even if he hadn’t actually done anything to the Chu family’s young miss, they would never let him off the hook.
“Little miss, please save me! The people who contacted me only used aliases, and they always came to the casino in person never used phones.”
“But! But they managed to get me a full set of Ruihua Hotel staff uniforms and even transferred a 100,000-yuan deposit to my account in advance! They must be insiders at Ruihua!”
Behind the one-way mirror, Ye Zhixia couldn’t wait any longer.
She put on a mask, circled the room, pushed open the door, and sat down in the chair opposite Li Qiang. “Hand over the bank card they used to pay you, then describe the appearance of the person who contacted you.”
Li Qiang stared at Ye Zhixia as she entered, silently realizing: No wonder this brat is so sharp, someone’s pulling the strings behind her.
Feeling the commanding presence of Ye Zhixia, Li Qiang actually felt a strange sense of security. Eagerly, he handed over his bank card and gave a detailed description of the contact’s appearance.
Ye Zhixia sketched on paper, eventually producing a portrait, which she handed to Li Qiang. “Take a look. Does this match?”
Li Qiang took the paper skeptically, only to find the face drawn on it was an exact likeness of the man who had contacted him. “Yes! Yes! That’s him!”
Ye Zhixia retrieved the sketch, had Xiao Mi store it safely, then turned back to Li Qiang. “In the end, you haven’t actually committed any wrongdoing yet, so you won’t face punishment.”
“I’ll give you two choices. First, I let you go right now, and you fend for yourself. Second, I give you 10,000 yuan and send you to a neighboring country, where you can start over.”
Li Qiang knew all too well that staying in the country meant the Chu family’s young miss would never let him go. Worse, the people who hired him might silence him for good.
“I’ll take the second option. I’m a single man as long as I’m alive, I can go anywhere.”
Xiao Mi, tugging at Ye Zhixia’s sleeve, looked at Li Qiang and asked, “Aren’t you going to visit your mom in the hospital?”
Li Qiang scratched his head but didn’t dare respond.
Ye Zhixia tossed him a foreign bank card and pointed to the door. “Walk out now, and you’ll be abroad. Good luck.”
Li Qiang grabbed the card and bolted out like a madman. When he turned back, the spatial prison had vanished, leaving him standing in a square surrounded by foreigners…
Inside the prison, watching the door close, Xiao Mi looked up at Ye Zhixia. “You’re just letting him go like that?”
Ye Zhixia crossed her legs casually and said calmly, “The person who contacted him must be a core member of the mastermind behind this. In the original plot, he was silenced immediately. But now that I’ve spared his life, he might prove useful later.”
Then she handed Li Qiang’s bank card to Xiao Mi and instructed, “Trace the source of that 100,000 yuan.”
Xiao Mi swiped through the screen, and after a series of operations, she turned back to report to Ye Zhixia, “It’s been laundered over a dozen times, but the original source is a film company under the Chu Corporation.”
“Xiaxia, should we share this information with Chu Ning?” Xiao Mi asked hesitantly.
Ye Zhixia smiled faintly. “Let’s see how things unfold tonight.”
In the evening, outside the private room at Yuexin Grand Hotel, Ye Zhixia smoothed the stray hairs by her ear before raising her hand to knock on the door.
The door was opened by the room attendant, who ushered Ye Zhixia to her seat.
“Sorry to keep you waiting, Miss Chu Ning,” Ye Zhixia said with a smile, nodding at Chu Ning across the table.
