- Chapter 6 - The Alluring Actress and the Gloomy Heiress
Hearing Xiao Mi’s exclamation, Ye Zhixia, who had been lazily sprawled on the sofa, instantly perked up.
She set down her phone, propped herself up, and took the documents in hand to flip through them.
The first page was a family tree of the Chu family spanning three generations.
Just this single page made Ye Zhixia furrow her brows.
“The head of the Chu Group, Old Master Chu, is Chu Ning’s maternal grandfather…” she murmured.
Xiao Mi bounced around excitedly, her eyes gleaming with the golden light of gossip: “Exactly! Chu Ning’s father was a live-in son-in-law, so Chu Ning refers to Old Master Chu as her grandfather.”
Without waiting for Ye Zhixia to respond, Xiao Mi transformed back into an ordinary kitten and pressed a paw onto the thick stack of documents. “Xiaxia, don’t bother reading, I’ll tell you!”
Ye Zhixia neatly stacked the papers and placed them back on the coffee table before relaxing into the sofa again. “Alright, go ahead.”
Xiao Mi hopped onto the coffee table, sitting primly with her long tail curled around her body.
She began her solemn explanation:
“Chu Ning’s mother was Old Master Chu’s only daughter, but she was entirely devoted to the family business and had never been in a relationship by the age of thirty.”
“At that time, Chu Tianheng was Old Master Chu’s assistant. The old man saw him as talented, diligent, and reliable and most importantly, he shared the Chu surname, so there’d be no resentment over the children carrying the Chu family name. So, he strongly encouraged a match between him and Chu Yunshu.”
Ye Zhixia’s brows twisted into a frown at this point. Skeptically, she asked, “And Chu Yunshu just agreed?”
Xiao Mi nodded. “Yep. They married quickly, and within three years, they had Chu Ning and Chu Hui.”
Ye Zhixia fell into a solemn silence.
Xiao Mi continued recounting the Chu family’s story.
“After Chu Yunshu’s unexpected death, Chu Tianheng dutifully raised their two children for a full decade.”
“But then, three years ago, Old Madam Chu passed away from illness. Grieving the loss of his wife, Old Master Chu understood the loneliness of an empty bed and, considering Chu Tianheng was still young, relented and allowed him to consider remarrying.”
“At first, Chu Tianheng refused the old man’s suggestion. It wasn’t until Old Master Chu underwent surgery and was hospitalized that he met Chen Yufen, a nurse who took meticulous care of him. Only then did he consider remarrying.”
Ye Zhixia felt something was off about the entire story, but before she could dwell on it, she zeroed in on the key point: “Then who is Chu Xiao’s father?”
Xiao Mi explained earnestly, “Chen Yufen was previously married, but her husband passed away from illness eight years ago.”
With that, she leaped onto Ye Zhixia’s lap, her expression tinged with sadness. “Chu Xiao is this world’s male lead. He majored in finance in college and excelled academically. Chu Tianheng adores him, brought him into the company to help, and often says Chu Ning and Chu Hui aren’t as smart or capable as him.”
Ye Zhixia looked at Xiao Mi and guessed, “So that made Chu Ning resentful?”
Xiao Mi nodded vigorously. “Exactly! Who likes hearing their own father praise someone else while putting them down?”
Ye Zhixia sighed.
People often say, “A mother’s status is elevated by her son,” but in reality, there are plenty of cases where “a child’s status is elevated by their mother.”
In some of the smaller worlds she had previously worked in, there were several men who neglected their own biological children but doted on their stepchildren instead.
Yet now, a bigger question loomed in Ye Zhixia’s mind: Chu Xiao shared no blood relation with the Chu family. In the original storyline, how could he have so easily taken over the Chu Group without a shred of guilt?
There’s something seriously wrong with this Chu Xiao!
Xiao Mi stretched out a paw to tap Ye Zhixia’s arm: “Xiaxia, tell me, is this dad a big bad guy?”
Ye Zhixia snorted: “Who knows what filth is in Chu Tianheng’s head?”
–
As the sun set in the west, Chu Ning, having arranged for the moving company, returned alone to the Chu family estate.
At this moment, Chu Tianheng, Chen Yufen, Chu Xiao, and Chu Hui were sitting at the dining table eating.
Seeing Chu Ning enter, Chen Yufen stood up with a beaming smile to greet her: “Ningning, you’re back! Come, sit down!”
She then ordered: “Aunt Wang, quickly get Ningning a bowl and chopsticks!”
Chu Ning sat on the stool, propping her chin with her hand, a mocking smile curling at the corners of her lips: “You started eating before everyone was here? Such casual manners.”
Chu Xiao, sitting beside Chu Tianheng, put on an elder brother’s air: “Who knew you were coming back today? Look at what time it is!”
Chu Ning tilted her head and sneered: “Oh? I remember saying on the phone that I was coming back. Did Vice President Chu and Aunt Chen not hear?”
Chen Yufen smiled awkwardly, letting Chu Ning speak. She had deliberately started dinner early to provoke Chu Ning into losing her temper.
Aunt Wang brought over the bowl and chopsticks, placing them in front of Chu Ning.
Chu Ning looked up, staring at Aunt Wang for three seconds before saying coldly: “Go make me two new dishes. Who wants to eat their leftovers?”
Chu Xiao continued to reprimand: “If you’re unhappy about something, just say it. Why take it out on Aunt Wang?”
Hearing this, Chu Ning wore a puzzled expression: “Asking a servant to cook is considered taking it out on them? Does the Chu family not pay their wages? Don’t think changing your surname gives you the right to boss the Chu family around, Sun Xiao!”
“Enough!” roared Chu Tianheng, who had been silent with a dark expression. “You come back and immediately start throwing barbs! After causing such a scandal, how dare you still act high and mighty here!”
Chu Hui then tugged at Chu Ning’s sleeve: “Sis, don’t upset Dad. We just started eating a little earlier, that’s all.”
Chen Yufen continued playing the good person: “Ningning, don’t be angry. Let Aunt Wang make you two more dishes. Take your time eating, no rush.”
Chu Ning knew full well that Chen Yufen was a wolf in sheep’s clothing. If she had just said, “Let’s wait until everyone’s here before starting,” today’s incident wouldn’t have happened.
If it weren’t for Chen Yufen’s constant stirring and provocation, why would Chu Ning have moved out just to study in peace?
Chu Tianheng slammed his chopsticks on the table: “What’s the deal with today’s Weibo hot search?!”
Chu Ning crossed her arms, leaning back in her chair with a smile: “What else could it be? I booked a room with my girlfriends to rest for the night, and somehow got accused of being with a man. The whole internet has figured it out has Vice President Chu not caught up yet?”
“Who was that man?!” Chu Tianheng continued to demand loudly.
Chu Ning shrugged: “No idea. Just a kind soul who helped me upstairs to meet my friends and then left. What? Do you know him?”
As she spoke, she glanced at Chu Xiao, then at Chen Yufen, before finally fixing her gaze on Chu Tianheng’s face.
Chu Tianheng, rebuffed, shouted angrily: “Don’t play word games with me!”
Looking at Chu Tianheng’s furious expression, Chu Ning was so angry she laughed: “When something happens to their child, most parents would worry about their safety. But you? Your first thought is to interrogate. Are you disappointed that I’m fine?”
Chu Tianheng was instantly left speechless, and the atmosphere in the dining room became extremely awkward.
Chen Yufen quickly interjected, “Ningning, your father is just worried about you!”
Chu Ning shot Chen Yufen a glare, then stood up gracefully and called toward the kitchen, “Aunt Wang, bring my meal to my room later.”
With that, she headed straight for the elevator.
Chu Hui, who never paid attention to entertainment news, looked puzzled. “What man are you talking about?”
Chen Yufen and Chu Xiao exchanged glances before hurriedly lowering their heads and pretending to pick at their food.
Meanwhile, Chu Tianheng picked up his chopsticks and said sternly, “Enough! Let’s eat!”
At the same time, in an upscale residential area on the other side of the city, Xiao Mi perched her front paws on the edge of the bathtub and asked, “Meow! Xiaxia, did you forget something?”
Ye Zhixia removed the two cucumber slices from her eyes and suddenly realized, “Oh! You’re right, I totally forgot! There’s still a bald guy in the space prison!”
