- Chapter 8 - The Alluring Movie Queen & The Gloomy Heiress
Chu Ning rose with a radiant smile to shake hands with Ye Zhixia before they both took their seats.
Today, she wore a pearlescent white gown, her voluminous curly ponytail cascading high at the back of her head like a little princess.
Across from her, Ye Zhixia still wore her sleek long hair loose, the top two buttons of her blouse undone to reveal a sparkling collarbone chain, paired with straight-cut suit pants—an effortlessly polished look.
A server handed them menus and explained, “Our restaurant specializes in various set meals, but if there are any à la carte dishes you’d prefer, you can order those separately as well.”
Chu Ning flipped casually through the menu before pointing to one page. “I’ll have this set, please, but leave out the seafood.”
The server quickly noted her order and asked, “Are there any other dietary restrictions besides seafood, ma’am?”
Chu Ning smiled. “No, that’s all.”
Across the table, Ye Zhixia pointed to another set and said, “I’ll just have this one, no restrictions. Thank you.”
The server acknowledged politely with a smile before leaving.
Out of the corner of her eye, Ye Zhixia noticed Xiao Mi’s mouth practically watering. She hurriedly transmitted a telepathic message: You glutton! Wipe your mouth!
Xiao Mi swiped at her lips and replied telepathically: I want steak too… But Chu Ning’s just like me—she doesn’t eat seafood. She’s so nice.
Ye Zhixia shot a silent glance at Xiao Mi, baffled as to why not eating seafood made someone “nice.”
Moreover, the fact that Xiao Mi, a system that had shapeshifted into a kitten, had a “no seafood” setting had puzzled her for ages.
“Miss Chu, do you avoid seafood because of an allergy?” Ye Zhixia inquired.
Chu Ning blinked her alluring eyes. “Yes, I break out in rashes if I eat any.”
Ye Zhixia seemed to consider something before advising, “Then you should be careful about that in daily life.”
Chu Ning took this as concern from Ye Zhixia and replied without hesitation, “Mm, I always am.”
But then Ye Zhixia suddenly turned serious. “I meant being wary of people who might use that against you.”
At this, Chu Ning froze. Over the years, she’d never considered someone might harm her that way. But after the incident at the Ruihua Hotel, Ye Zhixia’s concern clearly wasn’t unfounded.
A chill ran through her as she recalled what had happened a few days ago. Glancing at Ye Zhixia, who had saved her, she said courteously, “Thank you for what happened before, Movie Queen Ye. My name is Chu Ning—you can call me Ningning from now on.”
Then she tentatively asked, “Can I… call you Sister Xiaxia?”
Ye Zhixia was momentarily taken aback before a smile touched the corners of her eyes. “I’m five or six years older than you, so ‘Sister Xiaxia’ suits me just fine.”
After some small talk, the server brought their appetizers to the table.
Beyond expressing gratitude, Chu Ning had invited Ye Zhixia today to ask about that night’s events.
She used a silver fork to take a bite of Parma ham with melon, then set it down, chewing slowly before asking as if casually:
“Sister Xiaxia, could you tell me in detail what happened that night? I really do think someone was trying to harm me.”
Across from her, Ye Zhixia was idly picking at her cheese salad.
At Chu Ning’s question, she straightened leisurely and began recounting in a composed tone:
“That evening, I was invited to perform for your event when I happened to see you being helped out of the banquet hall by a middle-aged man dressed in waiter attire.”
“You had just graduated high school, and you were completely drunk. I was worried, so I followed and chased the man away, then stayed to take care of you myself.”
In truth, Chu Ning still wasn’t entirely convinced. She pressed further, “How did Sister Xiaxia realize that man was suspicious?”
Ye Zhixia immediately understood—this little lioness was testing her. She patiently replied, “When I entered the Ruihua Hotel that day, I noticed all the waitstaff, men and women alike, had well-proportioned figures and attractive looks. They must have certain appearance requirements during hiring. That man…”
The explanation was reasonable enough, and Chu Ning nodded, her face filled with gratitude. “I really have to thank you for the Weibo incident, Sister Xiaxia. If it weren’t for you, the whole world would think I’m some loose woman.”
But then, another question arose: “But why did Sister Xiaxia take a photo as soon as you walked in?”
Netizens, unaware of the relationship between Ye Zhixia and Chu Ning, might assume Ye Zhixia was simply using Weibo to store cherished moments with friends.
But Chu Ning knew very well—they weren’t close enough for a group photo, nor was there any need to use Weibo to store photos. From her perspective, Ye Zhixia’s actions seemed far too deliberate.
Nearby, Xiao Mi broke into a cold sweat at Chu Ning’s question, thinking to herself: This Chu Ning is better at interrogating than I am!
She turned to Ye Zhixia with concern.
Ye Zhixia, however, leaned back calmly in her chair, a hint of amusement in her voice. “At the time, I noticed someone taking sneaky photos and thought it might be a paparazzo who’d been following me. I figured taking a photo with you would help clear my name—turns out I was overthinking it.”
“But as luck would have it, it ended up clearing your name too. Not a bad deal.”
After hearing the explanation, Chu Ning couldn’t find any obvious flaws and temporarily set aside her suspicions.
From Chu Ning’s words, Ye Zhixia understood she hadn’t let her guard down yet. The clues she held weren’t the right time to share.
Ring ring ring… A phone rang.
Xiao Mi instinctively looked at Ye Zhixia’s pocket.
Ye Zhixia casually tucked her hair behind her ear and thought to herself: Don’t look at me. My ringtone is ‘dudu-du.’ That’s Chu Ning’s phone.
Unexpectedly, Chu Ning also looked up at Ye Zhixia with a dazed expression, as if it really were her phone ringing.
Feeling Chu Ning’s gaze, Ye Zhixia stared right back, a mischievous smirk playing on her lips. She tilted her chin toward Chu Ning’s handbag. “Ningning, it’s your phone.”
Chu Ning snapped out of it, quickly set down her utensils, and pulled out her phone.
“Hello? Auntie, I didn’t hear it earlier, it was in my bag.”
“Mm-hmm, just proceed with the lawsuit as planned. I’ll handle the rest myself.”
“Thanks, Auntie. Bye.”
After Chu Ning hung up, Ye Zhixia guessed the situation. “Are you suing those Weibo gossip accounts? I’ve kept evidence if you need it.”
Chu Ning shook her head quickly. “I still have a use for those Weibo accounts. Right now, I’m mainly suing the people around me spreading rumors.”
“Useful?” This time, it was Ye Zhixia’s turn to be puzzled. She genuinely couldn’t see what purpose keeping those marketing accounts could serve.
Chu Ning carefully considered her words. By revealing her plan and observing the other side’s reaction, she could confirm whether Ye Zhixia was in cahoots with them.
So she began, “Suing those marketing accounts would at most get us some compensation and a half-hearted apology. But keeping them around…”
