- Chapter 67 - The Cultivator and the Sea Demon
It was the Fern Sage who had incited the Xuantian Sect to abduct the Dragon King’s third princess. For generations, the Xuantian Sect had been enhancing their cultivation by draining the spiritual energy of other creatures.
Yet after their ascension, they discovered that the beings of the mortal realm no longer benefited them.
Accustomed to cheating their way to power, they refused to abandon such a shortcut. However, the immortals of the celestial realm were far stronger, and they dared not provoke them. Thus, they turned their sights to the dragon clan.
The Dragon King, as the Water Deity, governed the seas and oversaw rainfall for the mortal world. Residing deep in the ocean, far removed from the celestial realm, he was virtually invincible in the human domain.
The Fern Sage had prepared numerous schemes to seize the dragon princess, but he never expected the Dragon King to fall for the trap so easily.
A fierce gale swept through as multicolored auras surged from the Fern Sage’s body.
Anyone with a discerning eye could tell that his immortal energy was tainted with too many impurities.
“So, committing atrocities has been theXuantian Sect’s tradition for generations!” Ye Zhixia mocked, adopting a battle stance.
Baili Xin’er gazed coldly at the Fern Sage and warned, “You’ve stolen the cultivation of countless beings, and now you dare target divine spirits. Aren’t you afraid the celestial realm will find out?”
The Fern Sage paid no heed to the dragon princess, who had been imprisoned by the Xuantian Sect for centuries. Instead, his focus was on Baili Xin’er, a celestial being whose strength remained unknown. She might very well be the most formidable opponent present.
With a flick of his hand, the Fern Sage sent a streak of violet light hurtling toward Baili Xin’er.
He wanted to see how she would withstand this strike.
Yet Baili Xin’er remained motionless, allowing the violet light to rush toward her.
A meter before it reached her, the violet energy abruptly halted, then exploded with a muffled boom, dispersing into mist.
The Fern Sage couldn’t comprehend what had blocked his attack, and unease crept into his heart.
But in the next instant, a new scheme formed in his mind.
Every immortal possessed their own divine artifact, and the Fern Sage’s was the Dragon-Subduing Whip.
The whip, fifteen feet long, was forged from the spine of a rebellious ancient dragon mixed with celestial metal, granting it absolute dominance over dragon bloodlines.
With a swing of the whip, he dragged Ye Zhixia toward him.
Though she struggled fiercely, her draconic spiritual power was suppressed, leaving her helpless against the Fern Sage’s restraint.
The whip coiled around her upper body as the Fern Sage seized her collar with his right hand.
Ruan Ning rushed forward to help but was intercepted by the now-recovered Xuantian Sect disciples.
The Qiyan Sect members were formidable, and the Fern Sage had no intention of engaging them directly. He immediately sought to flee with his disciples.
But suddenly, a hidden arrow shot from among the Xuantian Sect’s ranks, piercing the Fern Sage’s elbow.
“Who?!” Elder Chenxu bellowed.
A blue-clad figure darted from the rear, slashing at the Fern Sage’s hand gripping the whip.
The Fern Sage barely dodged, loosening his grip enough for the whip to slacken.
Seizing the opportunity, Ye Zhixia shook free and retreated to the Qiyan Sect’s side.
The blue-clad figure engaged the Fern Sage in combat, and to everyone’s astonishment, this seemingly low-ranking disciple held his own against the immortal.
Baili Xin’er, who had remained composed all this while, lost her calm upon seeing this man and swiftly joined the fray.
Although Baili Xin’er was merely a plant, she was still a naturally born and nurtured innate deity. Moreover, she had once descended to the mortal realm to temper herself. The reason she hadn’t acted today was simply because she didn’t want to bully the weak with her strength.
Even if ten more Earth Immortals like the one before her were to appear, they still wouldn’t be a match for her.
After just a few exchanges, the Xianjue Immortal’s Dragon-Subduing Whip was wrested away, and the immortal himself nearly had his spiritual platform destroyed.
Seeing that the situation was beyond recovery, Xuantian Sect quickly called for their disciples to retreat.
Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning watched the blue figure that had rushed out from Xuantian Sect to rescue Ye Zhixia, wondering if this was the person Baili Xin’er had been searching for back then.
They saw Baili Xin’er gazing at the figure with tender affection, her eyes sparkling with joy as she clung tightly to the blue-robed disciple.
“Ayu, by revealing yourself like this, you won’t be able to return to Xuantian Sect anymore,” she said to the person beside her.
Ayu’s voice was deep and gentle as he replied, “I don’t plan to go back. They’ll surely summon those Golden Immortals from Xuantian Sect this time. We should think of a way to deal with them.”
With a wave of his hand, Master Yuntai shut the gates of Qixian Sect and then invited Baili Xin’er and her Ayu into the inner courtyard to discuss their next steps.
Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning had intended to follow.
However, Master Yuntai stopped them, saying, “This matter concerns Qixian Sect’s secrets. I must ask the two of you to remain here.”
Left with no choice, the two could only nod awkwardly and head toward the guest quarters.
Ye Zhixia was puzzled. Master Yuntai was a fellow transmigrator like her, what could possibly be so confidential that he couldn’t share with her? What was there to hide?
Inside the room, Ruan Ning plopped heavily onto the daybed, displeased. “Qixian Sect’s secrets can’t be shared with us, but they can be told to a low-ranking disciple from Xuantian Sect? Master Yuntai clearly doesn’t see us as his own people.”
Suddenly, as if remembering something, she asked in confusion, “Xiaxia, aren’t you a disciple of Qixian Sect? Why is Master Yuntai keeping things from even you?”
Ye Zhixia shook her head hurriedly, indicating she had no idea either.
Ruan Ning reached out, pulling Ye Zhixia to sit beside her before wrapping her arms around her.
“Xiaxia, why don’t we just return to the sea? It’s not like the affairs of Xuantian Sect are any of our concern,” Ruan Ning suggested in a coquettish tone. “Besides, Master Yuntai doesn’t seem to need our help anyway.”
Ye Zhixia gently pried Ruan Ning’s hands away and instead pulled her into an embrace. “Ningning, have you ever considered… those people were coming for me…”
Ruan Ning’s soft body suddenly stiffened as she sat up straight. She had forgotten, Ye Zhixia was no longer the powerless little sword cultivator she once was, but the Third Princess of the East Sea.
“Ah, I’m so tired. Let’s rest for a bit.” Ye Zhixia stretched lazily before lying down beside Ruan Ning, pulling her along onto the daybed.
Ye Zhixia turned on her side, draping an arm over Ruan Ning’s waist and resting her chin lightly on Ruan Ning’s shoulder.
Then she closed her eyes softly.
“Xiaxia!”
“Shhh…”
Ruan Ning wanted to say something, but Ye Zhixia interrupted her.
Without opening her eyes, Ye Zhixia spoke in a gentle voice, “Ningning, do you know? After I took that sword strike, I was so afraid I’d never see you again.”
The scene replayed vividly in Ruan Ning’s mind. Thinking about how Ye Zhixia had ultimately returned to her side, a faint smile touched her lips. “Me too. At that time, all I could think about was fighting that old man to the death to avenge you.”
“If you had died, there’d be no meaning in me living on either.”
Then she paused, her tone suddenly turning cheerful: “But now, I want to live a long life thousands, tens of thousands of years to travel the world with you, cultivate and ascend to the immortal realm, and see the sights of the celestial world.”
Ye Zhixia wriggled a little closer to Ruan Ning.
She gently pressed her lips to Ruan Ning’s ear: “No matter where you go, I’ll find you and stay with you, lifetime after lifetime.”
Ruan Ning’s nose tingled with emotion. That hollow, empty feeling in her heart, she never wanted to experience it again.
She turned and nestled into Ye Zhixia’s embrace.
Ye Zhixia closed her eyes, kissed Ruan Ning’s seaweed-like hair, then held her tightly in her arms.
Even though they were in the same world, why did it feel like they had endured life-and-death separation?
A tear slipped from the corner of Ye Zhixia’s tightly shut eyes.
The door burst open, startling them both as they turned to look.
Yuntai Zhenren arrived with Baili Xin’er and A Yu, looking urgent.
“Xiaxia, Ningning, we came to discuss, oh dear, you two, couldn’t you have gone to the bed?” Yuntai Zhenren covered her eyes with a sigh.
Baili Xin’er, however, merely curled her lips, unfazed by the young lovers’ embrace.
A Yu, the one from Xuantian Sect, remained composed and quickly steered the conversation back to the matter at hand.
“Miss Ye, Miss Ruan, originally, Yuntai Zhenren didn’t want you involved,” she said calmly yet seriously. “But this time, Xuantian Sect is targeting the Third Dragon Princess. Miss Ye can’t stay out of it, so you’ll have to join us in opposing them.”
Ye Zhixia understood the situation, but knowing the other three’s cultivation surpassed hers and Ruan Ning’s, she nodded calmly and asked, “No problem. What can I do to help?”
Ruan Ning tugged lightly at Ye Zhixia’s hand, unwilling to let her fight against Xuantian Sect’s cunning members.
Ye Zhixia squeezed Ruan Ning’s hand and gave her a reassuring look.
A Yu chuckled softly and said to Ye Zhixia, “We hope you’ll stay at Qiyuan Sect for now to lure them here. We’ll do everything we can to keep you safe.”
Yuntai Zhenren stepped forward and patted Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning on the shoulders. “Considering your cultivation levels are barely enough to contend with Chenxu Daoren, I initially planned for you to hide in the sea. But A Yu and Xin’er make a good point, if you leave Qiyuan Sect, they might turn their focus and pursue you.”
“For now, it’s better to stay within Qiyuan Sect.”
Ye Zhixia didn’t agree immediately. Instead, she turned to hear Ruan Ning’s thoughts.
Ruan Ning was innocent, she could flee alone.
Ruan Ning’s mind raced as she considered the options. After a long pause, she nodded at Ye Zhixia. “We’ll be safer staying at Qiyuan Sect.”
“Ningning, you could go to the sea,” Ye Zhixia urged sincerely.
Ruan Ning smacked Ye Zhixia’s back. “Are you trying to get rid of me?”
Ye Zhixia scratched the back of her head. “I just want you to be safe.”
Yuntai Zhenren raised a hand. “Hold on. If you two need to discuss something, you can do it privately.”
With that, she smiled like a doting mother and left with Baili Xin’er and A Yu.
–
Once the three had left, Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning were no longer in the mood for sweet nothings.
They sat on the luohan bed, analyzing the situation.
“If the Xuantian Sect is calling upon even more powerful immortals for support, then the Qiyuan Sect must have some countermeasures in place.” Ye Zhixia stared at the ground, analyzing as she thought.
While trapped inside the barrier by Yuntai Zhenren, Ruan Ning often heard the demonic beings recount stories of the Qiyuan Sect, so she was quite familiar with it.
“The Qiyuan Sect is rich in spiritual energy, and many of its predecessors have ascended to immortality more than the total number from any other sect,” she said to Ye Zhixia.
Ye Zhixia was stunned. “Then how dare the Xuantian Sect act so recklessly?”
After calming herself, she murmured, “It’s highly likely the Xuantian Sect is trying to exploit a time gap to wipe out the Qiyuan Sect before their predecessors can intervene.”
Ruan Ning followed her train of thought but still found it suspicious. “But even if the Qiyuan Sect’s immortals arrive too late, they wouldn’t just let this go.”
Ye Zhixia nodded, acknowledging Ruan Ning’s analysis. “In a battle between immortals, our main duty is to protect ourselves. Since A’Yu is their spy planted in the Xuantian Sect, they must have prepared long ago.”
“Have you regained your memories?” Ruan Ning suddenly asked. “During your time imprisoned in the Xuantian Sect, how did you manage to split your soul?”
Only then did Ye Zhixia remember her own experiences were deeply connected to this A’Yu.
