- Chapter 68 - The Cultivator and the Sea Demon
“When I was in the Xuantian Sect, I was locked in a pitch-black dungeon, spending each day in a daze,” Ye Zhixia said, her gaze drifting upward as she carefully recounted her memories.
“One day, a disciple from the Xuantian Sect took advantage of delivering my meal to whisper something to me…”
As it turned out, dragons only reached maturity at three hundred years of age. The Xuantian Sect needed to wait until Long San, the Third Dragon Princess came of age to fully exploit the dragon lineage’s potential.
When the time came, they planned to drain all of her spiritual energy, refine her soul, and then flay her remaining body to craft magical artifacts.
For those Earth Immortals, refining the soul was the most crucial step.
Only a refined soul could be used by immortals, while the dragon’s spiritual energy and flesh could only benefit the mortal cultivators of the Xuantian Sect.
The Xuantian Sect disciple who had approached the Third Dragon Princess taught her a method to split her soul. Before the sect could act, she extracted one soul and six of her seven spirits, forcing the Xuantian Sect to postpone their plans.
This fragmented soul drifted to the Xiyan Sect, where, nourished by the abundant spiritual energy, it eventually formed a physical body, becoming the Ye Zhixia of the past.
“Looking back now, that Xuantian Sect disciple who helped me must have been this A’Yu,” Ye Zhixia speculated.
Ruan Ning agreed with her analysis and added, “A’Yu disguised herself as a man in the Xuantian Sect that must have been incredibly difficult.”
Ye Zhixia took a deep breath and nodded in agreement. Beyond the daily inconveniences, just enduring the stench of male cultivators gathered together in the scorching summer heat would have been unbearable.
“But…” Ye Zhixia pinched her chin, still harboring some doubts. “My memories haven’t fully returned. Did those days in the Xuantian Sect really span three hundred years?”
Ruan Ning gently held Ye Zhixia’s arm and comforted her in a soft voice, “For us demonic beasts, decades or even centuries pass in the blink of an eye. Even five hundred years doesn’t feel that long to me.”
Though Ye Zhixia found some logic in Ruan Ning’s words, she remained skeptical. A long lifespan was one thing, but the passage of time was fixed. She was certain her memories in this world didn’t stretch back three hundred years.
The two spent two peaceful, leisurely days in the Xiyan Sect. During that time, Ruan Ning even took Ye Zhixia to the secluded realm where she had lived for ten years.
The realm encompassed an entire mountain, complete with rivers and lush scenery, where spring reigned year-round and spiritual energy flourished.
Demonic beasts and plants lived in blissful contentment within the barrier. If not for the instigation of those villains, the demons inside would never have considered leaving.
After being retrieved by Master Yuntai last time, the demons had resumed their simple, idyllic lives of cultivation.
When Ruan Ning and Ye Zhixia entered the realm, all the demons sensed the shift in energy and came in small groups to investigate.
“Eh? Little sea monster?” A deer spirit was the first to poke its head out, its face alight with surprise.
Ruan Ning corrected unhappily, “How many times do I have to say it? I’m not a sea monster, I’m a sea demon!”
Ye Zhixia searched her memories for the image of a sea monster those slimy, pitch-black creatures and suddenly understood why Ruan Ning was so displeased.
“Alright, little siren, did you run into any trouble with the Xuantian Sect out there? Is it safe now?” The deer spirit chattered away as she sidled up to her old friend.
At the mention of serious matters, Ruan Ning’s expression immediately turned grave. She pursed her lips and shook her head repeatedly. “Those Xuantian Sect people are downright ruthless. They don’t just target demons, they even prey on humans! They’ve killed so many innocent civilians.”
Demons emerged from the grass one after another, listening to Ruan Ning’s words and feeling grateful they had returned to the Qiyan Sect in time. Otherwise, they would’ve been sacrificed by those Xuantian Sect fanatics by now.
The deer spirit twisted her body and transformed into a little girl of about seven or eight, her face full of concern as she asked, “Little siren, are you okay?”
Just then, Ye Zhixia turned around and flicked the deer spirit on the forehead. “You’re just a kid, yet you’re calling Ningning ‘little siren’?”
The deer spirit clutched her head and scurried to Ruan Ning’s side. “Little siren, why is this dragon girl you brought so handsy and disrespectful to her elders?”
Ye Zhixia was surprised this deer spirit had recognized her as a dragon girl at a glance.
Ruan Ning quickly tugged at Ye Zhixia’s arm. “The deer spirit is over a thousand years old. Don’t knock her into dementia…”
“Huh?” Ye Zhixia pointed at the little girl in front of her. “This tiny thing is a thousand years old? She’s just pretending to be young, isn’t she?”
Ruan Ning raised her hand, palm facing Ye Zhixia, and lowered her voice to whisper into her ear. “The deer spirit slacks off more than she trains, so her cultivation isn’t strong enough to shapeshift freely. The most stable form she can maintain is this child’s appearance.”
The deer spirit, indignant, lifted her chin and planted her hands on her hips, huffing angrily. “I have a thousand-year-old form too, you know! Want to see it?”
Ye Zhixia hastily waved her hands. “No, no, that’s fine. My respects, Elder Deer.”
The deer spirit tilted her head, crossing her arms with a smug look. “That’s more like it.”
The demons within the barrier were all friendly, clearly getting along well with one another.
When sunlight passed through the outer layer of the barrier, its scorching heat was filtered out, leaving only a warm, gentle glow. A cool breeze brushed against their cheeks, and wisps of spiritual energy rose from the earth, nourishing all life within the barrier.
Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning lay side by side on the grass by the stream, resting their heads on their hands as they enjoyed the peaceful moment.
Ruan Ning scooted closer to Ye Zhixia, then rested her head on the arm Ye Zhixia had raised.
Ye Zhixia let her pillow against her upper arm, then draped her forearm down to affectionately stroke Ruan Ning’s cheek.
“Back then, I used to sunbathe here for a whole month without a care,” Ruan Ning began, reminiscing about her past.
Now drowsy from the sun, she couldn’t help but let out a long yawn. “Haaah.”
“I didn’t have a core back then, so I couldn’t cultivate even if I wanted to.” Tears from the yawn welled up in the corners of her eyes. “And then the deer spirit actually came over to nap and sunbathe with me.”
Ye Zhixia thought of the deer spirit’s antics earlier and couldn’t help but smile. She started to turn toward Ruan Ning to say something.
“Shh!” A child’s voice came from above their heads. “Don’t go telling people about my embarrassing past!”
Ye Zhixia, mid-turn, quickly lay flat again.
The two of them opened their eyes and looked up, only to be startled. All around them, the little animal and plant demons within the barrier were sprawled haphazardly across the ground, sunbathing alongside them.
And the deer spirit was lying right above their heads, her own head aligned with theirs.
Although Ye Zhixia was still lying on the ground, she constantly reminded herself to be cautious with her words and actions.
Before long, Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning stood up, and the other demons followed suit.
Ruan Ning smiled and teased them, “Since when did you all learn to slack off?”
The fox spirit, her voice soft and alluring, defended, “We absorb both sunlight and spiritual energy during the day, then cultivate at night, it doubles our progress. Little Ruan, why don’t you see how much we’ve improved?”
Ruan Ning first declined the fox spirit’s invitation with a laugh, then turned to the deer spirit.
The deer spirit quickly nodded. “What Sister Fox says is true! Our cultivation has advanced significantly this way.”
After chatting with the demons for a while longer, Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning left the barrier together. Before departing, they warned them that the Xuantian Sect was about to wage war against the Qiyuan Sect. If anything, unexpected happened, the demons should stay alert and flee for their lives.
Back in their quarters at the Qiyuan Sect, Ye Zhixia praised, “I wasn’t wrong Ningning, you’re truly the kindest girl in the world. Even in such critical times, you still remember to warn the demons to be careful.”
Ruan Ning wrapped her arms around Ye Zhixia’s waist, clinging to her as if she never wanted to let go. “It wasn’t entirely for them. Mostly, I just wanted to take you to experience a peaceful, carefree life.”
“In the past, we roamed the martial world, righting wrongs with unrestrained joy. But if I asked you to stay with me and live this boring life from now on, would you agree?” she asked, frowning.
“No,” Ye Zhixia answered immediately.
“Ah?” Ruan Ning’s face fell.
Ye Zhixia quickly added, “It’s just too noisy. I only want to bask in the sun and nap with you—just the two of us.”
“I could even hear the water buffalo snoring today,” Ye Zhixia complained.
Only then did Ruan Ning understand her meaning, and her face instantly brightened with joy.
Just as she was about to cheer, Ye Zhixia pulled her onto the bed instead.
Habitually, Ye Zhixia rested her head against Ruan Ning’s neck, one arm wrapped around her waist, and a leg draped over Ruan Ning’s.
The cool whisper of Ye Zhixia’s breath against Ruan Ning’s shoulder and neck made her drowsy.
Ye Zhixia stealthily undressed her, then pulled up the quilt.
Not long after falling asleep, Ruan Ning turned onto her side, her back to Ye Zhixia. Their legs curled together like two shrimp stacked atop one another.
Ye Zhixia also drifted into slumber, but unbeknownst to her, her body began to change.
The more relaxed she became, the more her true form emerged. By midnight, she had fully transformed into her azure dragon shape.
Ye Zhixia’s serpentine body was lithe and supple, her tail lightly coiling around one of Ruan Ning’s legs, her small claws resting against Ruan Ning’s arm.
The chill of Ye Zhixia’s scales seeped through Ruan Ning’s thin undergarments, making her shiver slightly. Half-asleep, she tugged at the quilt for warmth.
Even in slumber, Ye Zhixia’s claws were restless. She sneakily lifted the hem of Ruan Ning’s underrobe and pressed it against her waist.
“Ah!” Ruan Ning jolted awake with a yelp. “Who put ice in my clothes?!”
Ye Zhixia stirred groggily, sensing something was off with her body.
Meanwhile, Ruan Ning realized she was completely entangled and couldn’t even turn over.
She raised a hand and slapped Ye Zhixia’s dragon claw resting on her waist twice, her voice trembling. “What is this?!”
Only then did Ye Zhixia realize she had revealed her true form. Hurriedly, she channeled her spiritual energy to revert to her human appearance.
“S-sorry, Ningning,” she stammered guiltily.
Ruan Ning didn’t blame Ye Zhixia in her heart, but the sensation of the dragon’s body and claws was indeed a bit… unique.
A clever idea struck her, she suggested that Ye Zhixia also transform into her true form. That way, as a sea demon and a dragon, neither would have to worry about freezing the other.
Ye Zhixia obediently complied. But once both had shifted, Ye Zhixia’s gleaming dragon eyes caught sight of Ruan Ning’s iridescent seashell and immediately sparkled with covetous hunger.
Her dragon claws simply wouldn’t obey her.
“Hey, you little dragon girl, why are you pawing at me with both front and back claws?” Ruan Ning demanded.
Ye Zhixia pouted and grumbled, “This isn’t fair. I only have scales, why do you get a shell?”
Unable to resist Ye Zhixia’s persistence, Ruan Ning had no choice but to indulge her.
Satisfied, Ye Zhixia coiled herself into a circle, wrapping Ruan Ning snugly in the center of her long body.
Now in her sea demon form, Ruan Ning’s body temperature naturally aligned with the dragon’s warmth. Pressed against Ye Zhixia’s serpentine frame, she drifted off to sleep once more.
–
Neither Ye Zhixia nor Ruan Ning had expected that before the so-called formidable immortal from Xuantian Sect arrived, Qiyan Sect would first welcome their own immortals and not just one.
The first was a fairy clad in flowing purple robes, her sharp gaze exuding an air of authority.
Even the primordial goddess Baili Xin’er had to kneel before her.
Not daring to slight her, Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning respectfully addressed her as Master Zixia.
The other was none other than the East Sea Dragon King, who had once formed a contract with Ye Zhixia.
Upon hearing of the Dragon King’s arrival, Ye Zhixia immediately suppressed her draconic aura.
Yet the moment the Dragon King appeared, he jabbed a finger at her and roared, “I knew you wretched girl was up to no good! Just the other day, I casually checked and found you’d already found a way to break the contract!”
The disciples of Qiyan Sect, disciplined as they were, refrained from openly spectating but secretly employed all manner of methods to eavesdrop on the dispute between the Dragon King and Ye Zhixia.
Ye Zhixia quickly realized that with her scattered soul and spirits restored to her true body, the incomplete vessel she had once inhabited had dissipated naturally voiding the contract.
But she found the old Dragon King’s behavior utterly undignified.
His own daughter, Long San, had been lost by his own hand, that fault lay with him. And abducting the human Xu Sui to impersonate the princess was hardly a righteous act either.
“Old Dragon King, do you truly wish to reclaim your daughter?” Ye Zhixia couldn’t help but wonder aloud. “It seems to me that in your eyes, your real daughter doesn’t matter at all.”
The Dragon King lifted his chin haughtily and declared with righteous fervor, “Hmph! Everyone knows the East Sea has a Third Princess. She must exist, it’s a matter of our dignity!”
Ye Zhixia couldn’t be bothered to argue further. His answer had already revealed everything.
Had the Dragon King genuinely wanted his daughter back, a simple “yes” would have sufficed. But resorting to lofty excuses and substituting another in her place spoke volumes.
Instead of immediately revealing her identity, Ye Zhixia proposed that the Dragon King stay in Lin’an City at the foot of the mountain. She promised that once the conflict between the two sects was resolved, she would return to the East Sea with him.
She even had Master Yuntai act as a witness.
Knowing Qiyan Sect’s strength and trusting Master Yuntai’s impartiality, the Dragon King settled comfortably in a Lin’an inn, ready to observe the brewing conflict between Qiyan Sect and Xuantian Sect.
