- Chapter 5 - The Charming Actress vs. The Brooding Heiress
In the agent’s office, Chen Chen sat with her head bowed, irritably organizing the documents in front of her.
Ye Zhixia tiptoed into the room, quietly closing the door behind her before silently making her way to the desk. She pulled out the chair opposite Chen Chen and sat down, her tone laced with amusement. “Sister Chenchen, frowning like that will give you worry lines, you know.”
Recognizing Ye Zhixia’s voice, Chen Chen immediately looked up, her frown deepening. “Oh, my dear girl, you caused such a stir on Weibo without even informing the company first were you trying to give me a heart attack? Thankfully, the response has been positive so far, but otherwise, ”
“Alright, alright,” Ye Zhixia cooed, cutting her off. “It was an emergency! I was doing a good deed, and good deeds bring good karma, of course the response would be positive.”
With that, she stood up, circled the desk, and draped an arm over Chen Chen’s shoulders from behind. “Sister Chenchen wouldn’t really be mad at me, right?”
Seeing her playful attitude, Chen Chen’s anger mostly dissipated, though she still gave Ye Zhixia’s hand a firm smack, her tone a mix of fondness and reproach. “Cut it out. From now on, you must report to the company before posting anything on Weibo, no more reckless behavior.”
Ye Zhixia straightened up with a sweet smile. “No problem! I’ll report every Weibo post from now on!”
Chen Chen gestured toward the chair across from her with a tilt of her chin. “Sit down and explain exactly what happened on Weibo.”
Ye Zhixia elegantly returned to her seat and began recounting in detail:
“Yesterday, I attended the graduation ceremony at Haicheng International High School and came across a drunk girl. Her phone was dead, so I couldn’t contact her family. Out of kindness, I took care of her. We’ve all been girls at that age helping out is just natural, right?”
Listening to her explanation, Chen Chen tapped her fingers rhythmically on the desk. “So you’re saying you didn’t know she was the second daughter of the Chu family?”
Ye Zhixia spread her hands. “I had no idea. The students at Haicheng International High are all from wealthy or influential families anyway. I just got lucky and happened to pick up the Chu family’s second daughter.”
Chen Chen suddenly understood. “Ah, that explains it. I was wondering why, if you’d already taken a photo with her, she’d still call the company asking for your contact info.”
She rummaged through the messy pile of documents in front of her and pulled out a small notebook, flipping to a specific page. “After you posted your second Weibo update, first the assistant of the Chu family’s eldest son, Chu Xiao, called asking for your contact details. An hour later, the second daughter, Chu Ning, also called wanting to reach you.”
“I didn’t give them your personal contact info, just took down their numbers. You can decide what to do with them.”
Ye Zhixia took the notebook from Chen Chen but only saved Chu Ning’s number.
“Be careful,” Chen Chen warned. “These two contacted the company separately. Rich families have complicated dynamics, you need to tread lightly.”
Ye Zhixia closed the notebook and handed it back, her expression serious. “I only plan to respond to Chu Ning. There might still be some loose ends to tie up, but it shouldn’t involve Chu Xiao.”
Chen Chen was pleased with her decision and added, “It’s not that I want to restrict your freedom to make friends, but actresses getting involved with wealthy heirs, especially male ones, never looks good for their reputation.”
Smart people know when to stop, so Chen Chen smoothly changed the subject.
“The shooting schedule for ‘Love Across a Millennium’ is out. Director Kong Sen’s work has a high chance of winning awards! Your assigned assistant will report next week. Although you only have this one movie this year, quality matters more than quantity. Make sure you seize this opportunity.”
With that, she handed the schedule across the table.
Ye Zhixia took the schedule and flipped through it.
After confirming her work commitments, Ye Zhixia left the company with the schedule and the preliminary script.
When she and Xiao Mi returned home, Xiao Mi reverted to her usual appearance as an ordinary cow-patterned cat. Finding a cozy spot to curl up and nap was pure bliss, and Xiao Mi thoroughly enjoyed the feeling.
Ye Zhixia changed into loungewear, flopped onto the beanbag chair, and picked up the script for “Love Across a Millennium” to read.
“Love Across a Millennium” tells the story of a brave and skilled female general and a kind, hardworking noblewoman who join forces to defend the border, only to be framed by a paranoid emperor and forced into exile.
During their flight, the two help the common people, earning their deep affection.
However, the noblewoman accidentally reveals her identity and is shot dead by soldiers sent by the imperial court.
In despair, the female general rallies her former troops and rises in rebellion, vowing to avenge her beloved.
After successfully overthrowing the emperor, the female protagonist hands over her military authority to her subordinates and returns to the border, where she takes her own life to follow her love in death.
A thousand years later, in modern times, the two are reincarnated to continue their love story.
Ye Zhixia, with her delicate, striking features and tall, athletic build, was naturally cast as the female general. The role of the noblewoman was originally played by newcomer Xu Miaomiao in the source material.
In a Mary Sue storyline, it made perfect sense for a rookie actress to play the second female lead. But given the current situation, with filming set to begin next week, Xu Miaomiao still hadn’t secured the role.
Ye Zhixia was curious, how exactly had Xu Miaomiao gotten this opportunity in the first place?
She didn’t dwell too much on Xu Miaomiao’s situation. After all, the protagonist naturally had protagonist halo, and her own goal in this world was clear to save the pitiable Chu Ning.
Setting the script aside, she picked up her phone, thought for a moment, and sent Chu Ning a message:
“Hello, Miss Chu. This is Ye Zhixia. My agent gave me your contact information and said you wanted to speak with me.”
Three minutes later, her phone chimed twice with a reply.
Ye Zhixia opened the message, which read:
“Sister Zhixia, you helped me twice yesterday and today. I’d like to invite you to a simple dinner tomorrow at 5 PM at Yuexin Grand Hotel as a token of my gratitude. Please say yes!”
“Was that Chu Ning replying?” Xiao Mi, sprawled on Ye Zhixia’s stomach, asked.
“Yes, we’re getting a free meal at Yuexin Grand Hotel tomorrow,” Ye Zhixia answered.
After replying to Xiao Mi, she typed back:
“Sure, see you tomorrow at 5 PM.”
This time, she received a response within seconds:
“Looking forward to it!”
Ye Zhixia opened the search bar and typed “Yuexin Grand Hotel.” The small print in the search results showed: Yuexin Grand Hotel, a high-end restaurant under the Qiansheng Group…
“Seems the kid isn’t stupid, she knows better than to go to Ruihua Hotel now,” she muttered to herself.
Then she reached out and patted Xiao Mi’s plump behind. “Get up for a sec. Pull up the family tree of the Chu family for me.”
Xiao Mi stretched luxuriously, yawned, shook her head, and transformed into a miniature black-winged cat, hovering in the air.
A screen appeared in front of her, rapidly scrolling through data.
Two seconds later, Xiao Mi waved a tiny paw, and the screen vanished.
Then she eagerly flew to Ye Zhixia’s side, pointing at the documents that had appeared on the coffee table in front of the sofa: “Oh my gosh, Xiaxia, look at this! It’s such a complicated and dramatic family soap opera!”
