- Chapter 47 - How to Deal with Someone Interested in My Fiancée
After a flurry of chaos, the Gu family’s private doctor, David, arrived carrying his medical kit with a stethoscope around his neck.
He took blood pressure readings, checked her pulse, examined her eyelids and tongue coating, and finally drew a small tube of blood to take back for testing.
“Doctor, is Mom okay?” Gu Lin asked anxiously.
David gave her a helpless look. “She’s fine, just her old issues.” Then, lowering his voice to an almost inaudible whisper, he added, “It’s just menopause.” As he spoke, he glanced toward the actress, relieved to see she was still resting with her eyes closed and hadn’t noticed their conversation. He continued, “Try not to upset Actress Ye, make sure she takes care of herself, and gets plenty of nutrients.”
Gu Lin also breathed a sigh of relief, worried that she might have actually made her mother sick that would have been a grave mistake on her part.
“If there’s nothing else, I’ll be going. It’d be better if you called me over less often, if possible.” David shrugged helplessly. “Isn’t that right?”
Gu Sisi pursed her lips into a smile and cast a teasing glance at Gu Lin. “If only Little Five could behave a bit better.”
Aside from David, all three people present were omegas, and it was nearly impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly strong scent of peach blossoms emanating from Gu Lin. Gu Sisi took it in stride, merely feeling that her younger sister had grown up, finally graduating from innocence, evoking a mix of bittersweet pride and complex emotions that nearly brought her to tears.
Liu Mingyan’s expression, however, was far from pleasant. Her fox-like eyes, tilted upward at the corners, were icy cold, though she wore a smile as she remarked, “Little Five is all grown up now, and as an alpha, there’s nothing wrong with experiencing things with a girl a bit early. Auntie Lan, there’s no need to be so angry.”
Hearing this, Gu Lin frowned. She disliked Liu Mingyan’s phrasing, disliking how Wen Yan was reduced to just some casual, cheap girl in her words.
“Mom~” Gu Lin walked over and crouched in front of Ye Lan, habitually acting spoiled.
Ye Lan, still fuming, kept a cold face and refused to look at her.
“We didn’t do anything.” Well, they really hadn’t done anything. If they hadn’t taken the final step, then it counted as nothing, right? Gu Lin muttered under her breath, feeling genuinely hurt by her mother’s suspicion and lack of trust. But then again, thinking about how much her mother cared for and protected Wen Yan made her happy.
“Didn’t do anything?” Ye Lan let out a cold laugh and poked her youngest daughter’s forehead, as if wishing she could poke a hole through it. “Then where did this overwhelming scent all over you come from? Hmm?”
Being marked was a private matter, and with outsiders present, Gu Lin hadn’t intended to bring it up. But Ye Lan’s disappointed gaze cut her deeply.
Pursing her lips, Gu Lin revealed the freshly scabbed mark on the back of her neck and spoke so softly that Ye Lan almost couldn’t hear her. “I was marked by Wen Yan.”
“What did you say?!”Ye Lan’s eyes lit up with surprise, and her previously languid body, draped weakly on the sofa, suddenly sprang to life as she stood up straight.”
Burning with embarrassment and under the two intense gazes fixed on her, Gu Lin raised her voice slightly and repeated, “I was marked by Wen Yan.”
As soon as the words were out, Gu Sisi was so shocked she nearly dropped her teacup, while Liu Mingyan’s expression turned cold, her eyes momentarily sharp and venomous as if laced with poison.
“Really?!” “So, are you two together now?” “You have a girlfriend?!”
“She’s going to marry into our Gu family and become my daughter-in-law, right?!”
Ye Lan fired off four questions in rapid succession, the stark contrast in her demeanor making Gu Lin’s heart ache.
Gu Sisi understood her pain and quietly whispered to Liu Mingyan, “Look how thrilled my mom is you’d think Xiao Wu was some unwanted omega nobody would take.”
“Finally marrying her off.”
Liu Mingyan forced a strained smile in response to Gu Sisi.
This sudden turn of events had completely disrupted all her plans. Gu Lin being marked by Wen Yan was like pulling the rug out from under her, no matter how many schemes and strategies she had devised, they had all fallen through.
Her restless index finger kept twisting the emerald ring on her left hand. Gu Sisi noticed and looked up at this sister she hadn’t seen in years, a hint of confusion in her eyes.
“You seem really unhappy?”
Restlessness, anger, and even a faint trace of violence, a storm of negative emotions was quietly brewing, brought to light by Gu Sisi’s remark.
Liu Mingyan was inwardly startled but maintained her composure. She smoothed the hair by her ear and smiled with a gentle, flawless grace.
She was the esteemed Countess of London’s upper society, the renowned “Black Rose” of the Rhine.
“Really?”
“Maybe I just feel sorry for Xiao Wu, being marked so casually.”
“It seems a bit impulsive.”
That made sense. After all, Sister Liu was Xiao Wu’s mentor and surely saw her as a younger sister.
But even her own sister, Gu Sisi, didn’t feel much regret. She herself found Wen Yan stunning, and now that Xiao Wu had been marked, it seemed like she’d gotten a great deal.
Well, now even the most unlikely mama’s-boy alpha had found someone.
Gu Sisi thought gloomily.
From now on, Mom would probably be on my case every day about finding a partner.
But who could possibly be worthy of a fairy like her?
Poverty alleviation was the government’s job, not hers.
Gu Sisi was deeply troubled. Glancing at the mother and daughter sharing a tender moment, an idea struck her.
Maybe she should run away from home?
Before Gu Sisi could act on her thoughts, Gu Lin waited until the family was asleep, sneaked into the garage, started the Maserati, and drove away from the estate.
Under a clear sky dotted with stars, a biting north wind carried the chill of Siberia, sweeping through the empty streets and adding to the desolation.
The sports car roared down the vacant elevated road like a beast finally unleashed, snarling and raging against the silent night.
Inside the car, Gu Lin couldn’t sleep. Her mind was more alert than after drinking coffee or matcha. Even though they had been apart for less than a day, she was desperately missing her girlfriend. A woman of action, Gu Lin didn’t even bother to check if Wen Yan was asleep. Like a princess eloping with her lover, she drove straight to her omega.
Wen Yan, of course, was still awake she was battling jet lag again.
Without her alpha’s pheromones, falling asleep alone had become a struggle.
She had a 9 a.m. flight to Hengdian the next day to return to the set for filming.
To help herself sleep, Wen Yan had even taken melatonin. While it relaxed her and brought on drowsiness, her consciousness seemed to have a mind of its own, drifting on the surface of the sea, unwilling to sink into slumber.
Agonizing.
Wen Yan tossed and turned, unable to sleep. She glanced at her phone 11:30 p.m. Her last chat with Gu Lin had ended with a “good night” at 9:30, yet two hours later, sleep still eluded her.
So annoying.
When Gu Lin was by her side, falling asleep had never been this difficult.
Was this what they called pheromone dependency?
And what about Gu Lin?
Would the marked alpha feel even worse?
Wen Yan bit her lip and sent a message to her lover.
[“I can’t sleep. How about you?”]
The reply came almost instantly.
[“I’m still up too. Insomnia again?”]
[“Yeah, a little.”]
[“What do you usually do when you can’t sleep?”]
Wen Yan thought for a moment before typing her response.
[“Watch movies, play games, or just space out.”]
Gu Lin found it adorable. No matter what Wen Yan did, Gu Lin always thought she was incredibly cute.
The bias was strong.
[“And you?”]
[“Look at the stars.”]
Wow, so romantic, philosophical, and utterly classy.
Wen Yan teased with a smile.
[“How are the stars tonight?”]
[“Did the Cowherd and Weaver Girl meet?”]
Gu Lin didn’t reply.
Wen Yan guessed she was busy gazing at the night sky to answer her question.
A moment later, Gu Lin called directly.
Surprised, Wen Yan answered.
“Hello? What’s up?”
“Wen Yan.”
Gu Lin stood below Wen Yan’s apartment, looking up at the light from her room, her eyes filled with longing and anticipation.
“Would you like to open the window and look at the stars outside?”
“They’re especially beautiful tonight.”
“Really?”
Though skeptical, Wen Yan got out of bed and walked to the window.
She pulled back the curtains and pushed the window open. A cold northern wind rushed in, making her wrap her arms around herself.
The moon hung high in the night sky, a full moon, surrounded by a distinct halo, quite lovely. But there were only a few stars visible to the naked eye, nothing like the “especially beautiful” scene Gu Lin had described.
As the cold wind continued to howl, Wen Yan was about to close the window when her gaze drifted downward out of habit.
And she froze completely.
It was Gu Lin her lover, her alpha.
Standing below her apartment, her slender figure appearing even more delicate in the darkness, evoking a strong urge to rush down and give her a warm embrace. Gu Lin looked up, phone in hand, smiling at her.
“Did the Cowherd and Weaver Girl meet?”
Gu Lin asked softly.
Wen Yan turned and ran, not even bothering with a coat. She flung open her door and dashed out in her slippers.
Through the phone, Gu Lin could hear hurried footsteps, the sound of the elevator opening and closing, and rapid breathing.
Her heart seemed to race along with Wen Yan’s, beating fiercely.
Unable to calm down, her blood boiling with excitement.
Finally, the hallway light flickered on, the security door swung open from the inside, and Wen Yan, clad only in thin pajamas, rushed into Gu Lin’s arms. She clung tightly to her lover who had come through the night, inhaling her scent with intoxication and longing.
Gu Lin opened her coat and wrapped Wen Yan inside, enveloping her in her own warmth to chase away the chill.
Under the hazy moonlight, the two held each other tightly, their bodies pressed close, inseparable.
Their silhouettes on the ground merged into one.
Gu Lin lowered his head to kiss her hair, then her ear, gently warming her cold earlobe with his lips before finally releasing it and pressing a soft kiss to her lips.
Wen Yan hummed contentedly in his embrace, nuzzling against him.
“Have the Cowherd and Weaver Maid met yet?”
She murmured softly, her face buried in the soft curve of Gu Lin’s chest.
Gu Lin stroked Wen Yan’s hair, his other arm wrapped around her slender waist, whispering into his lover’s ear.
His voice was as gentle as a recited poem; his tone as firm as a vow.
“Whether they meet or not doesn’t matter.”
“I will come to you.”
