- Chapter 46 - How to Break Free from Domestic Violence as a Fiancée
Ye Lan’s left eyelid had been twitching incessantly lately, making her restless and disturbing her sleep.
She asked Gu Lang, that big dog of hers, if Gu Corporation’s stock prices had risen again after all, left eyelid twitches signify fortune, while right eyelid twitches foretell disaster. Though the twitching was uncomfortable, it was still a good omen.
Gu Lang directly sent her the stock trend chart. The crisscrossing red and green lines, bizarre-shaped graphs, and densely packed numbers made Ye Lan’s head spin.
After so many years of marriage, didn’t he know she was particularly bad with technical data and numbers?
Instead of just telling her the conclusion, he had to send her the chart!
Ye Lan was so irritated her teeth itched. That night, as she lay in bed, the more she thought about it, the angrier she became. She reached out and pinched the nose of the dead man beside her, forcibly waking Gu Lang from his dreams.
“What’s wrong?”
Gu Lang groggily opened his eyes, wrapped his arms around his wife, and spoke in a low, husky baritone that was undeniably sexy.
If a young girl heard it, she’d probably melt on the spot.
Twenty years ago, Ye Lan would have fallen for it too. But now? Sorry, she was practically immune.
Sometimes, she even found it disgustingly greasy.
Nauseating, really.
“My left eyelid keeps twitching.”
She woke him up for this?
Gu Lang yawned, utterly exhausted. After nearly a week of business trips, he had finally returned home hoping to rest, only for his wife to start making a fuss.
“Did you get too much hyaluronic acid injected?”
The words slipped out before Gu Lang could stop himself. The moment he said it, he regretted it so much he wanted to die, wishing he could slap himself twice.
Stupid mouth! Why did you have to say that?
Now it’s over.
No more sleep for him.
He hunched his shoulders and timidly glanced at her. Sure enough, his wife was squinting at him.
She smiled sweetly and brightly.
He knew that expression all too well. Gu Lang couldn’t help but shiver, his hairs standing on end from tension.
“Yes, after all, I’m already old and faded.”
“Not like your twenty-something secretary, brimming with collagen.”
“And it’s not hyaluronic acid.”
Here we go again, Gu Lang thought miserably. He knew the issue of his secretary accompanying him on business trips would come back to haunt him.
“He’s male.”
The domineering CEO, who commanded respect outside, now meekly defended himself, not daring to speak too loudly.
“But he’s also an omega.”
Ye Lan straightened her back, righteous and stern.
“Need I remind you about your secretary from two appointments ago? The male beta who tried to seduce you with drugs?”
Gu Lang shook his head repeatedly. The straight-laced man had no desire to recall the horrifying experience of being pursued by someone of the same gender.
“But you get jealous of female secretaries too.”
“So it’s my fault?”
Ye Lan raised an eyebrow and smiled faintly.
Gu Lang: …
What could he say? His wife could never be wrong. It was always his fault.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said that. Honey, please don’t be angry.”
Gu Lang apologized smoothly, the same words having left his mouth countless times. Ye Lan was sick of hearing them.
“Go sleep on the couch.”
The true head of the household issued the cold, merciless order.
She was sick of the sight of him!
What else did he do besides annoy her?
No matter how reluctant he was, Gu Lang could only gather his blankets and leave the warm, fragrant bed.
The leather sofa was narrow and cold, and Gu Lang hadn’t slept well at all. The next day, he went to work with dark circles under his eyes, looking like a panda.
Seeing this, Gu Sisi knew that her father must have angered her queen-like mother again. Not daring to approach him and risk his bad mood, she obediently stayed in her room to work on her script.
Around ten in the morning, the Gu Manor received a rare visitor.
Gu Sisi was hunched over her computer desk, typing furiously. Her fingers flew across the keyboard so fast they almost left afterimages, as if she weren’t typing on a sleek mechanical keyboard but playing the grand piano in the living room, worth over half a million.
Ring, ring!
The phone rang. Thinking it was Uncle Zhong calling to deliver snacks, Gu Sisi picked up and said, “I don’t want anything. No need to bring anything over.”
She was about to hang up when her mother’s low, chilly laughter came through the receiver.
“What don’t you want?”
Gu Sisi’s heart skipped a beat. She swallowed, cleared her throat softly, and adjusted her voice, trying to sound sweet and obedient to please her menopausal mother.
“Oh!”
“I thought it was someone else.”
“It’s my young, beautiful, and ever-graceful mom.”
“Mom, what’s up? Why are you calling?”
Ye Lan was amused by her fourth daughter’s playful tone, and the gloom that had accumulated overnight vanished instantly.
“You and your smooth talk.”
“Your sister Liu is here. Change your clothes and come down quickly.”
“Ah! Is Sister Liu back in the country?!”
Gu Sisi was so overwhelmed by the sudden good news that she felt dizzy and disoriented, squealing with delight.
“I’ll be down in a bit!”
Even at twenty-four, she was still like a child, wearing her emotions on her sleeve for everyone to see.
Ye Lan shook her head helplessly and hung up the phone. It had been a long time since such an important guest had visited the manor, so she instructed the kitchen to prepare more tea snacks.
Liu Mingyan, being of mixed Chinese and British heritage and a long-time resident of London, would likely appreciate them.
“I’m sorry for dropping by so suddenly without giving you any notice,” the woman on the sofa apologized with a smile. Seeing Ye Lan brewing tea, she started to rise to help but was stopped by Ye Lan’s words.
“It’s fine. Stay seated.”
“I’ll handle it.”
“Since Xiao Wu went to study in the U.S., it really has been a long time since I’ve seen you.”
Come to think of it, Xiao Wu had practically grown up under Liu Mingyan’s watch.
Time flies.
Ye Lan sighed inwardly.
The once dazzlingly talented and brilliant Liu Mingyan was now a woman in her thirties, a countess and a seasoned member of the House of Commons.
She carried the teacup over and poured a cup for Liu Mingyan. It was traditional Keemun black tea, rich in color and aroma, perfectly suited to British tastes.
Liu Mingyan took a small sip and praised it effusively.
The two chatted casually while Ye Lan sipped her tea, quietly observing.
The woman before her had matured significantly compared to four or five years ago. The unstoppable sharpness she once possessed was gone, replaced by an elusive smoothness and polish. Yet, the controlling demeanor in her gestures and the scent of power acquired from years in politics made Ye Lan sigh silently.
Despite being so much younger, Liu Mingyan was a woman even Ye Lan found intimidating and dared not provoke.
Gu Sisi quickly descended the stairs, dressed in a dusky blue knitted sweater paired with a lake-blue long skirt, exuding an artistic and elegant aura. Her long hair was loosely tied up, giving off a casual, homely vibe with a hint of lazy charm.
She was a far cry from the mischievous, lively little girl from memory.
“My goddess, little Sisi, you’ve truly grown more and more beautiful.”
“Is there someone you like?”
“Tell your sister, won’t you?”
Gu Sisi’s desire to show off and bask in the praise was immensely satisfied, what fairy doesn’t love hearing sweet compliments from another fairy? Just as she was about to return the flattery, her mother mercilessly exposed her.
“There’s no one she likes. She’s been single since birth.”
Gu Sisi’s face instantly turned green with a mix of anger and embarrassment. Why did her mother have to embarrass her like this in front of others?
“I really suspect she’ll end up alone for the rest of her life.”
Her mother was both worried and exasperated, almost cursing her as an unfilial daughter.
Liu Mingyan covered her mouth with a light laugh. “It must be because little Sisi’s standards are too high. Should I introduce you to a few?”
“No way,” Gu Sisi muttered under her breath, sulking as she sat down next to Ye Lan and poured herself a cup of black tea.
Still so childish.
Liu Mingyan smiled faintly.
Then, as if remembering something, she changed the subject.
“Speaking of which, I saw Xiao Wu in Milan.”
Gu Sisi knew, she had used her sister Gu Xian’s tickets to go on a date with Wen Yan.
“Is she not back yet?”
“She took a flight this morning and should be home by noon.”
Xiao Wu was a good kid; she always shared her schedule with Ye Lan in advance so she wouldn’t worry. Apart from her love life causing her mother some concern, there was really nothing else for Ye Lan to fret about.
She knew about Xiao Wu going abroad with Wen Yan to attend a fashion show and fully supported it, even wishing she could pass on more tips for pursuing girls before Gu Lin left.
Gu Xian, watching from the sidelines with her cheeks propped in her hands, remarked that all that theoretical knowledge was useless. It’d be better to just give her condoms cook the raw rice, so to speak, and let a child seal the marriage.
Simple, crude, and highly efficient.
Ye Lan was so furious she wanted to grab a rolling pin and spank her. What kind of nonsense was she spouting!
Xiao Wu was her child; she would never do anything to harm an omega before marriage.
Never!
Ye Lan opened the front door and was hit by the strong scent of omega pheromones emanating from her daughter, Xiao Wu. The harsh reality slapped her hard across the face. The actress felt her breath catch, her hands trembling, her blood pressure skyrocketing, and her head spinning.
She felt as if the pride she had held onto for years had instantly crumbled, turning to dust.
With a gust of wind, it all scattered.
“You little brat, what have you done?!”
Ye Lan finally managed to focus on the scene before her, leaning against the wall as she pointed at the troublemaker and yelled, “What did you do to Wen Yan?!”
How intense must it have been for her to still carry the girl’s scent even after returning home?
Ye Lan collapsed into her fourth daughter’s arms, pinching the philtrum above her lip hard to keep from fainting from rage at her unfilial daughter.
“Kneel down right now!”
And also, pack up and go propose as soon as possible!
