- Chapter 43 - How to Break the Engagement Request from My Fiancée
Hot.
Thump-thump, thump-thump.
Her heartbeat was racing so violently that Gu Lin could barely catch her breath.
She began counting silently in her mind within sixty seconds, her heart had beaten one hundred and ten times.
This wasn’t normal.
An adult’s heart rate typically ranges from 60 to 100 beats per minute. One hundred and ten was clearly beyond that.
An alarm bell went off in Gu Lin’s mind something was wrong with her body.
The flush on her face deepened, turning into a scorching heat that made her want nothing more than to take a cold shower or, better yet, apply an ice pack.
Hah.
She let out a soft gasp and threw off the blanket. It was hot, too hot. Her mouth felt parched, and she desperately craved water.
Yet her body was still sweating, her back already slick with moisture.
Was she running a fever?
But her head wasn’t dizzy, and she felt no nausea.
Gu Lin lifted her gaze, her eyes hazy as she looked at Wen Yan. The indistinct desire within her grew even stronger.
She wanted to do something.
But…
What did she want to do?
She didn’t know. Unbearably frustrated, she pressed a hand to her forehead.
Wen Yan also noticed the unusual flush on Gu Lin’s face her entire complexion was as red as if she’d been scalded by boiling water, alarmingly crimson.
Thinking it might be a high fever, Wen Yan quickly reached out to feel Gu Lin’s forehead. To her surprise, the temperature under her palm wasn’t hot at all, it was even slightly cool.
A low-grade fever?
No, that couldn’t be it. A fever wouldn’t cause this kind of reaction.
“Gu Lin, what’s wrong with you?”
“I’m hot! I feel awful.”
Wen Yan’s touch felt incredibly soothing her hand was cool and refreshing. Gu Lin instinctively nuzzled her cheek against it, unwilling to let her pull away.
The faint, plant-like fragrance grew more intense, clearly emanating from the person in front of her. Wen Yan could sense this scent drifting into her body through her nostrils. Her recently injected suppressants had left her body vulnerable, and now, an alpha’s pheromones had flipped a switch, compelling an involuntary response.
Yes, these were Gu Lin’s pheromones something she rarely revealed to others.
It was Gu Lin’s heat, triggered after so long by the one she loved her omega.
The two exchanged a glance and instantly understood what was happening. Alpha-omega lovers who shared such a deep connection were especially prone to sparks flying, especially when alone together in a confined space. The enclosed room gave the pheromones ample room to weave their influence. No one could resist the other’s pheromones mingled with affection, especially when they came from an alpha. Once released, they were an unmistakable invitation.
An alpha would never refuse her omega.
An omega would always yield to her alpha.
Such were the rules and iron laws of this world.
Wen Yan awkwardly withdrew her hand, about to ask if Gu Lin had brought any suppressants. But Gu Lin was quicker, urgently urging her to leave.
“You should go back. I’ll be fine on my own.”
“Do you have any suppressants with you?”
Gu Lin shook her head.
The Gu family’s children didn’t use suppressants. From a young age, they underwent specialized training to build resistance to the opposite sex’s pheromones, preventing future coercion or threats through scent manipulation. As a result, her four omega sisters showed no interest in alphas, and no alpha’s pheromones could ever force them into submission. The most striking example was her second sister, Gu Shuang, who eventually reached a point where the mere scent of an alpha’s pheromones made her nauseous.
Gu Lin had been surrounded by the pheromones of various omegas since childhood, and combined with her training, it could be said that no omega’s pheromones could provoke a response from her.
But then she met Wen Yan, and Wen Yan became her exception, her one and only.
“It’s fine. I just need to endure it for a while.”
Gu Lin sat up, moved further away from Wen Yan, and turned on the ventilation system.
The central air conditioning began to operate, and the fresh air effectively diluted the concentration of pheromones in the room.
But Gu Lin could still catch that faint, cold scent of peach blossoms.
Damn it.
Her body was reacting, and the arousal was intense.
Gu Lin was so embarrassed that her entire body flushed red. She wished she could cover herself with her hands. She was wearing loose sleepwear, and the prominent curve was unmistakably obvious.
Her eyes red, the alpha looked pleadingly at Wen Yan, silently begging her to leave quickly.
Wen Yan had clearly noticed it too. At first, she felt a little awkward, but seeing Gu Lin even more flustered and embarrassed than she was, Wen Yan relaxed.
“Are you really okay without using suppressants?”
“Should I go buy some for you?”
Her tone was as gentle as if she were coaxing a child who refused to take medicine.
Gu Lin quickly shook her head. “I’m really fine. Besides, at this hour, no stores are open.”
“And it’s dangerous.”
Public safety in Italy wasn’t the best, especially after the wave of immigration. At night, there were frequent cases of omegas being assaulted and forcibly marked.
Gu Lin couldn’t bear the thought of letting Wen Yan go out alone.
“Then, I’ll head back for now?”
Wen Yan was still a bit worried, but Gu Lin was insistent, and her expression looked as if she were about to cry. It made Wen Yan feel like she’d be a villain if she stayed any longer.
“Mm, mm, mm.”
Gu Lin nodded repeatedly. As soon as Wen Yan left, she quickly closed the door and rushed into the bathroom.
So hot.
So hot.
It was 4 a.m. in November, the coldest time of the day. Gu Lin turned on the cold water, letting it wash over her feverish body.
Cold so cold that her body trembled, her teeth chattered, and her limbs felt as heavy as lead. Even the slightest movement was a struggle.
But her heat cycle didn’t end just because of the physical cooling. The scent of purple bamboo burst from the gland at the nape of her neck, like a dormant volcano erupting after years of silence.
The rich fragrance of purple bamboo quickly intertwined with the lingering cold scent of peach blossoms, creating an aroma that made Gu Lin even more unable to resist. With just one whiff, her mind grew hazy, and she nearly lost consciousness.
No, this won’t do.
She turned off the water, wiped herself roughly, and, guided by her pheromones, collapsed onto the large bed.
It was the spot where Wen Yan had slept, still carrying her warmth and scent.
Ah.
It was her omega.
Gu Lin curled into a ball, burying herself almost greedily in the sheets, intoxicated by Wen Yan’s lingering fragrance.
She was like a traveler wandering in the desert, hot and thirsty, desperately in need of water. Yet the remnants of Wen Yan’s pheromones were like a glass of wine, drinking it only made her body burn even hotter.
Gu Lin finally understood why, on the helicopter, Wen Yan had been so tormented by her heat that she would say anything. Right now, she too wanted.
Wanted!
Slender fingers suddenly clenched the white sheets, gripping so hard that the knuckles turned pale. Veins bulged fiercely on her arms as the alpha gasped heavily, nearly brought to tears by the torment of unfulfilled desire.
She thought of Wen Yan every part of her body.
The longing drove her to madness, to the brink where all her upbringing and restraint teetered and crumbled into dust.
The ringing of her phone timely interrupted Gu Lin’s unsettling fantasies. It was Wen Yan. She hurriedly answered.
“Are you okay?”
She cared deeply about her.
Gu Lin’s eyes instantly reddened. She felt miserable, on the verge of tears, wanting to act spoiled with her.
“I…”
Gu Lin habitually wanted to lie and say she was fine, but her current physical state made self-deception impossible. After uttering just one word, she couldn’t speak any further.
“Gu Lin?”
Wen Yan panicked instantly. She had experienced that torment of losing all reason, craving only release, a suffering she never wanted to endure again. Wen Yan didn’t want Gu Lin to become a slave to desire, just as she had that day.
“If it’s really unbearable, how about I take you to the hospital?”
“Don’t tough it out alone.”
It was a reasonable suggestion, but unfortunately, the hospital’s solution was merely to provide suppressants. Suppressants were essentially a mix of pheromones from the opposite sex and a moderate dose of sedatives.
Gu Lin was immune to other omegas’ pheromones. Suppressants were useless for her.
This had been specifically mentioned by her private doctor at the end of the training course.
“Going to the hospital won’t help.”
Gu Lin was so distressed she was on the verge of tears, and Wen Yan could hear it clearly.
Her heart ached terribly, twisting into knots.
Should they do it?
Once the thought surfaced, Wen Yan accepted it quickly, without hesitation.
They liked each other, didn’t they?
“Then, how about I come to be with you?”
Gu Lin understood her meaning. Wen Yan intended to use her own body to help Gu Lin through this sudden heat. A mix of grievance, heartache, and a hint of sweetness brewed in her heart. Tears pooled in her eyes, forming a large teardrop that rolled down.
Wen Yan.
Wen Yan.
Gu Lin took a deep breath and shook her head. Wen Yan was willing to give, but she couldn’t accept it as a matter of course.
She couldn’t be so despicable, so cunning, as to take possession of that person. Gu Lin would despise herself.
But she wanted Wen Yan to come, to stay with her.
Fortunately, there was another way.
“Could you bite me?”
The alpha, tearful and pleading, asked the omega she loved.
“Wen Yan.”
“Will you mark me?”
