- Chapter 42 - What to Do If the Fiancée Wants to Run Away
Wen Yan slowly opened her eyes.
The surroundings were dim, and she had grown quite accustomed to waking up in the middle of the night. Out of habit, she reached under her pillow to find her phone and check the time, but her fingers met nothing.
Something felt off. The missing phone and the fact that she was still fully dressed finally jogged her memory of how she had fallen asleep the night before.
She had dozed off in the car on the way back to the hotel after leaving Savini Restaurant.
Wait did that mean she hadn’t removed her makeup or washed up?
Sleeping with makeup on was terrible for her skin!
Panicked, Wen Yan quickly touched her face soft, smooth, and tender, clearly freshly cleansed.
What a relief.
She let out a relaxed sigh and propped herself up. Having enjoyed a rare, restful sleep, she felt both mentally and physically refreshed. Groping along the wall, she turned on the bedside lamp, and the dim room was instantly bathed in a warm, orange glow.
This wasn’t her room.
Wen Yan could tell at a glance.
It was Gu Lin’s room.
On the sofa lay a woman, her brows slightly furrowed as if she were sleeping restlessly, a thin blanket draped over her. It was November in Milan, and the room temperature was set to 27 degrees Wen Yan wondered if she might be cold.
Wen Yan sighed inwardly, thinking how adorably foolish this woman was. She poked Gu Lin’s cheek, just as Gu Lin had done to her when she was half-asleep, hoping to wake the silly girl.
The sofa was narrow and short, hardly a comfortable place for Gu Lin to rest. Already in a light sleep, Gu Lin stirred and slowly woke at Wen Yan’s touch.
Her eyes fluttered open to find Wen Yan crouched beside her, gazing at her gently.
“Why are you sleeping here?”
The bed was plenty big even for two it wouldn’t have been a problem.
Gu Lin jolted awake and sat up abruptly.
Her startled reaction made Wen Yan feel as if she’d done something inappropriate to Gu Lin while she slept.
“I didn’t want to disturb you.”
That was only part of the reason. The main one was that Gu Lin didn’t trust herself to control her desires. She wasn’t sure she could resist doing something if she shared a bed with Wen Yan.
Like kissing her, for instance.
“Go back to sleep. I’m heading to my room.”
Wen Yan stood up and went to collect her coat and bag.
“Okay!”
Gu Lin felt a pang of disappointment and reluctance. It seemed as if their secondary genders were reversed she was the clingy omega who needed her partner’s presence, while Wen Yan was the strong, capable, career-focused alpha.
“Did you remove my makeup for me?”
While tidying up, Wen Yan spotted the cotton pads in the trash. Though she already knew the answer, she asked anyway.
“Yeah! Sleeping like that isn’t good for your skin.”
Damn, she was so considerate it was impossible to resist.
If Wen Yan were really a little fox, her fluffy tail would probably be wagging happily back and forth by now.
But she wasn’t, so Gu Lin couldn’t tell. She added,
“But I didn’t touch anything else just took off your coat.”
“Don’t, don’t overthink it.”
Wen Yan felt a surge of irritation. Overthink what? What was there to overthink? What exactly was she supposed to be overthinking?
On the helicopter, under the influence of the drug, Wen Yan was practically on the verge of stripping to seduce Gu Lin, yet Gu Lin remained unmoved, as detached as a monk devoid of worldly desires.
At the time, Wen Yan was genuinely grateful for Gu Lin’s gentlemanly demeanor and restraint. How many alphas could resist when the omega they liked was practically throwing themselves at them? But later, Wen Yan couldn’t help wondering if her charm was lacking. Otherwise, why would Gu Lin claim to like her yet act so restrained in every way?
It wasn’t until last night’s warm embrace like a long-suppressed volcano beginning to erupt or a dam finally releasing years of pent-up floodwaters that Wen Yan felt the depth of Gu Lin’s attachment and love for her.
But that didn’t mean Gu Lin’s concealment of her identity could be overlooked.
With this thought, Wen Yan was in no hurry to return to her room. She tossed her bag carelessly onto the bed and sat on the edge, wearing nothing but an oversized ginger-colored cashmere sweater that easily covered her hips and upper thighs. Her slender, pale legs dangled provocatively in front of Gu Lin, while the dim, ambiguous lighting draped the scene in a veil of sensuality.
The alpha’s blood surged, and she hastily averted her gaze, not daring to look at Wen Yan.
Amused by Gu Lin’s obvious fear of being seduced, Wen Yan smiled, her eyes narrowing as she leaned back on her hands, her posture utterly relaxed.
“Miss Gu the Fifth, is there something you haven’t told me?”
“Hmm?”
That single, melodious hum lingered in the air, sending another wave of heat through Gu Lin’s chest.
She remembered how Wen Yan had moaned beneath her in the lounge that day during the screen test.
Gu Lin’s Adam’s apple bobbed repeatedly as she suddenly felt parched.
“The first time I saw you was when you came to the Gu family to break off the engagement.”
Wen Yan furrowed her brows at Gu Lin’s words; she was certain she hadn’t seen Gu Lin that day.
Her confusion was evident, and Gu Lin struggled to keep her eyes fixed on Wen Yan’s face, resisting the urge to let them wander where they shouldn’t, as she continued explaining to her fiancée.
“When you were at the entrance, did a Maybach drive by?”
A flicker of realization crossed Wen Yan’s eyes.
“I was in the car and saw you through the window.”
“Later, my mother called and said the eldest daughter of the Wen family had come to break off the engagement.”
“That’s when I knew you were my fiancée.”
“So, at the lobster restaurant that time, you recognized me and deliberately invited me to star in your film?”
Wen Yan noticed the unnatural blush on Gu Lin’s cheeks and secretly laughed to herself.
“Mmm… The first time I saw you, I thought you’d be perfect as the female lead in my film.”
“Then why did you lie and say you were Lin Ye?”
Wen Yan crossed her arms, questioning her with righteous indignation.
“I didn’t lie to you.”
Gu Lin’s gaze was now completely lost, unsure where to rest. Wen Yan’s posture accentuated the curves and lines of her chest, which normally wouldn’t have been a problem, but Gu Lin felt her own state was off just looking was enough to stir her heart, making it hard to control herself.
“Lin Ye is my stage name. If I used my real name, no matter how terrible my films were, people would still praise them. That’s not what I want.”
“So I chose a new name, not intending to rely on the Gu family.”
“Wanting to see how far your own true abilities and skills can take you?”
Wen Yan understood her thoughts and added.
“Mm.”
Gu Lin nodded.
It wasn’t surprising it seemed like something she would do.
Any ambitious young person from a wealthy family always hopes to break free from the family’s influence and make their own mark. Gu Lin taking such action was entirely reasonable.
Wen Yan took a deep breath and slowly exhaled. Then, her nose twitched she seemed to catch a familiar, refreshing botanical fragrance, soothing and pleasant.
Was it the hotel’s air freshener?
Or Gu Lin’s perfume or natural scent?
“Later, I fell for you, but you seemed to despise this engagement.”
“I was afraid that telling you the truth would make you reject me.”
“So I never mentioned it.”
“I’m sorry, I apologize to you.”
The fifth young lady of the Gu family bowed her head sincerely, her attitude of admitting fault quite commendable. Wen Yan, who was never one to hold a grudge, seeing her like this, casually brushed the hair behind her and said nonchalantly,
“It’s fine, it’s not really a big deal.”
“Speaking of which, I actually watched your documentary but still didn’t recognize you.”
She had thought that if the fifth young lady of the Gu family appeared before her, she would definitely recognize her.
But reality gave her a sharp slap not painful, just a bit unsettling.
Compared to her fourteen-year-old self, the current Gu Lin had grown significantly taller, with longer, upward-slanting eyes. Her eyes used to be round and soft, quite adorable, unlike now, where they exude authority and presence even without anger.
Oh, right, and her eyebrows.
Wen Yan observed carefully.
They used to be natural sword-shaped eyebrows, straight and well-defined, paired with a high nose bridge and sharp facial lines clearly the look of a valiant alpha. Now, trimmed into gentle distant-mountain brows, the sharp intensity had softened considerably. When she sat there silently, she was a picture of serene beauty.
Exactly Wen Yan’s favorite type.
The fiancée she wanted to break up with was not only her boss but had also fallen for her and most importantly, she herself had fallen for her too.
So the question arose: should this engagement be called off or not?
Wen Yan felt conflicted. It was true that she liked Gu Lin, but her stance as a non-marriage, non-childbearing advocate wasn’t just talk.
Like most women in her previous life, Wen Yan feared marriage and childbirth. Dating was fine, but marriage was out of the question.
Have a child for you?
Keep dreaming.
Her firm attitude made her come off like a heartbreaker.
But what if it were a relationship with marriage as the goal?
Wen Yan let out another long sigh.
How troublesome, this ABO world.
Why couldn’t she be the alpha?
