- Chapter 44 - What Does the Fiancée Want to Break?
Marking.
For both alphas and omegas, it is a sacred act symbolizing belonging and commitment, love and loyalty.
However, due to physiological differences, if an omega accepts a mark and later attempts to remove it, it can severely harm their health even leading to infertility or atrophy of the neck gland. Alphas face no such concerns; their robust physical constitutions remain entirely unaffected even after surgical procedures.
Though these were the facts, Wen Yan hesitated.
She was surprised to find herself unbothered by the idea of helping Gu Lin physically, yet deeply unsettled by the act of marking her herself.
It felt like sealing the lid on something uncertain. The moment the choice fell into Wen Yan’s hands, she grew hesitant and contemplative.
Were they truly suited for each other?
She had never loved anyone before could she be a good girlfriend, a good lover, or even a good wife?
If she told Gu Lin she didn’t want to marry or have children, even if Gu Lin understood and supported her, would Gu Lin’s parents, the actress Ye Lan and Chairman Gu ever agree?
There were too many factors to consider, so many that the slightest misstep could lead to complete failure. As if it were her turn to make a move in a game of chess, Wen Yan’s hand trembled slightly as she held the piece, staring at the tangled, complex board, unwilling to make her move.
And this silent hesitation, in Gu Lin’s eyes, was a subtle form of rejection.
Her young heart shattered into pieces, and she burst into tears right then.
What could be more humiliating and embarrassing than being silently rejected by the fiancée you love when you ask to be marked during your heat?
Wiping her tears, Gu Lin hung up the phone, buried her face in the pillow, and began to cry.
Unstable hormones during heat can lead to emotional outbursts irritability and frequent crying are normal fluctuations. But Gu Lin couldn’t accept it. The more she cried, the more heartbroken she became. Her tears quickly soaked the pillow, leaving a large, damp stain.
In her twenty-two years of life, Gu Lin had never experienced such a low point or such an awkward moment her face streaked with tears, her body feverish with unmet desire. Gone was her usual aloof and unflappable demeanor that looked down upon the world. Instead, she resembled a heartbroken little girl abandoned by an unfaithful lover, on the verge of drowning in her own tears.
In the past, when she had rejected other omegas who liked her, even a slightly harsh word would leave them on the verge of tears, as if she had done something terribly cruel. Now, it was her turn, and she finally understood what it felt like to be rejected by someone you love.
She felt so miserable and ashamed that she wanted to hide in a corner forever and never see Wen Yan again.
Knock, knock.
Someone was at the door.
Gu Lin lifted her head. Her striking phoenix eyes were red and swollen, her long, upturned eyelashes still glistening with teardrops, making her look utterly pitiable.
“Gu Lin, open the door.”
It was Wen Yan’s voice.
She had come straight over after the call ended.
Gu Lin’s nose stung, and the tears she had barely managed to hold back now fell in large drops. In these few minutes, she had cried more than in her entire life up to this point.
No.
I can’t open the door.
Despite her anguish, Gu Lin knew she mustn’t open that door. If she came into contact with Wen Yan and inhaled her pheromones, she couldn’t guarantee she would keep her senses or that she wouldn’t do something she herself would despise.
“Gu Lin?”
“Won’t you open the door?”
Wen Yan’s voice carried a hint of urgency. “I’m really worried about you.”
Gu Lin sniffled, leaning against the wall as she made her way to the door and spoke toward it.
“I’m fine, you should go back.”
“Are you really okay?”
“Really, I’m fine.”
Perhaps it was because she had cried her heart out, but Gu Lin felt the heat recede slightly at least it wasn’t as overwhelming as when Wen Yan was nearby. It was still within bearable limits.
“Then open the door and let me see you.”
That wouldn’t do. This, above all else, was impossible. The two of them simply couldn’t be in close proximity right now.
Gu Lin thought to herself.
Besides, she didn’t want the person she loved to see her like this, all cried out.
It was too embarrassing.
“Your scent will affect me if you come in.”
Gu Lin muttered gloomily.
Rejecting Wen Yan was always a difficult decision. Every time, Gu Lin tried to hold onto her principles and self-control, but Wen Yan’s gentle words always managed to break through her defenses effortlessly.
“But I won’t feel at ease if I don’t see you.”
“Why did you hang up on me earlier?”
“Wasn’t it because you couldn’t take it anymore?”
It was a perfectly reasonable argument, and Gu Lin was almost convinced.
“But you’re not willing to mark me.”
Her voice was pitiful and full of grievance, like a soft, pleading omega who couldn’t get the affection she desired.
Wen Yan sighed, speaking with careful tact. “We could try other ways.”
If it were any other alpha, hearing such an implicit hint from an omega, they would have happily opened the door, swept the omega into their arms, and tumbled into bed, tangled together beyond distinction.
But Gu Lin was stubborn for some reason, unusually rigid in her thinking.
“There are no other ways.”
Wen Yan rested her hand against the door, at a loss for words. The other’s persistence was hard to handle.
“There are no other ways.”
“I haven’t formally confessed to you yet, and you haven’t agreed to be my girlfriend.”
“So there are no other ways.”
A proud alpha, living under the envious gazes of others, was unexpectedly old-fashioned and conservative.
And she had a strong sense of ceremony.
Wen Yan lowered her head, staring at her toes as hesitation crept in again.
A voice inside urged her, saying that this was the person she had been searching for all along someone like this, who could spend a lifetime with her. To accept her, mark her, leave your symbol and presence in this woman’s body, so other omegas would smell your scent on her.
But was true love really this simple and easy?
Why did everything before her feel as illusory as a dream instead?
Like an irresistible sweet bait, once bitten, what awaited her was an endless abyss.
Ah.
Perhaps after struggling in misfortune for so long, even when happiness unexpectedly came her way, it only brought fear and suspicion.
“Gu Lin.”
Wen Yan gently pressed her forehead against the door, her eyes downcast, her thick, dark lashes fluttering like crow feathers.
She spoke softly, asking,
“Do you love me?”
On the other side of the door, the alpha raised her hand and placed it against the door, as if trying to reach through and touch the gentle, beautiful woman outside to caress her face, cup her cheeks, and gaze directly into those captivating peach-blossom eyes.
Sincerely, softly, with every word heartfelt, she replied,
“I love you.”
“How much do you love me?”
Gu Lin smiled, but her next words were anything but laughable.
“I love you enough to die for you, and enough to live for you.”
With just a word from you, I would willingly face death;
If you do not wish it, I would endure life for your sake.
See?
She has said as much.
What are you still hesitating for?
Wen Yan never doubted Gu Lin’s sincerity and passion. This person gave her a sense of security she had never known before. Every word she spoke, every syllable, was backed by a character of integrity.
Not a single falsehood.
She opened her eyes, no longer lost or hesitant, her tone steady and resolute.
“Open the door.”
Two simple words, an irresistible command.
As if she were the alpha who ruled over everything.
Gu Lin, no matter how unwilling, was shaken by the overwhelming authority in those two words and hesitantly opened the door.
Her fiancée was still dressed as she had been before leaving home, standing alone in the cold, deserted corridor, shut out for so long.
On her feet were only a pair of thin slippers, her fair ankles flushed red from the cold.
Gu Lin’s heart ached with regret and pity at the sight. In a moment of urgency, she pulled her into an embrace.
Her body was so warm surely it could warm her thoroughly.
Wen Yan nestled into Gu Lin’s arms, raising a hand to hook around her neck.
Rising on her tiptoes, she breathed softly into the alpha’s ear, quietly releasing her pheromones.
“Leave everything to me, alright?”
The omega asked mischievously.
“Mm… mark me!”
The alpha was still struggling, clinging to the last shred of hier faltering consciousness.
“It’s alright,”
Wen Yan chuckled lightly.
“Only children make choices.”
“We can have it all.”
