- Chapter 25 - Don't Withdraw from the Engagement and Don't Be Jealous Either
When Gu Lin returned, Wen Xiu was sobbing in Wen Yan’s arms.
Tears flowed freely omegas were truly made of water, easily moved and quick to cry. Wen Yan was exceptionally gentle, wiping away her brother’s tears over and over without a hint of impatience, her coaxing voice soft and soothing.
“It’s alright, isn’t your sister fine now?”
“Don’t cry anymore, you little tear-streaked kitten.”
“If you keep crying, your sister will feel terrible too.”
“Be good for me.”
It was hard to connect the Wen Yan before her eyes with the enchanting siren who had just made hearts skip a beat, but Gu Lin knew they were one and the same.
This was Wen Yan’s charm.
Gu Lin watched quietly, not intending to disturb the siblings’ peaceful moment. She set down the sandwiches and milk and turned to leave.
Wen Yan called out to her.
“Director Lin.”
Her gaze was moist and tender, enough to make anyone’s heart flutter involuntarily.
“Thank you for saving me.”
Her brother sniffled and explained that he had messaged Director Lin, never expecting she would rush over in a helicopter, arriving just in time to rescue Wen Yan before those scoundrels could harm her.
Wen Xiu looked up too, wiping his tears with the back of his hand. Both siblings had the same captivating peach-blossom eyes.
“Thank you, Director Lin, for saving my sister.”
Gu Lin fell silent. She was naturally reticent and had no experience with such situations, so she said nothing, leaving an awkward pause in the conversation.
Wen Xiu blinked, puzzled by Gu Lin’s sudden silence. He glanced at his sister, who showed no reaction, then turned back to Director Lin.
Oh, he seemed to have spotted a bite mark.
A neat set of teeth marks was visible near her shoulder, stark red against her fair skin, impossible to miss.
Did his sister bite her?
Wen Xiu’s face flushed, suddenly feeling a wave of shyness.
Was this the world of adults?
He was still just a child!
“Here are the sandwiches and milk,” Gu Lin suddenly spoke, uttering the words somewhat inexplicably.
Wen Yan had naturally noticed the plastic bag she’d placed on the table and nodded. “I’m not hungry yet. Thank you, Director Lin.”
She then looked down and asked her brother, “Are you hungry, A Xiu?”
Wen Xiu shook his head, he had already eaten at home.
“It seems you’ll have to eat them yourself, Director Lin.”
Gu Lin looked down. Not knowing what kind of sandwich Wen Yan preferred, she had bought one of each variety, along with skim milk, whole milk, and soy milk. She hadn’t expected neither of them to want any. Such a large bag of food was she supposed to eat it all herself?
Maybe she could toss it to Qin Xia later.
Gu Lin thought to herself.
“Would you like to rest here? The hospital room is reserved until tomorrow.”
Wen Yan shook her head. She disliked hospitals they felt cold and lonely.
“I’ll take my brother home soon. I’ll be back on set tomorrow.”
Her break was already over.
“You can take one more day off, just in case you’re still feeling unwell.”
Wen Yan declined Gu Lin’s kindness. “I don’t want to hold you back.”
“You’ve already invested so much time in this film since it started, haven’t you?”
Gu Lin frowned, understanding that Wen Yan didn’t want to owe her too much. She also didn’t want the person she cared for to feel burdened by guilt or develop feelings out of a sense of obligation.
So, she had no choice but to compromise.
“If you insist.”
Later, what would completely captivate Wen Yan.
Was Gu Lin’s unwavering, boundless compromise.
Wen Yan’s car was still at the Empire State Building. Qin Xia drove a black Bentley and escorted Wen Yan and Wen Xiu home.
The darkness inside the car felt oddly comforting, with the streetlights flickering past, casting intermittent warm glows.
Gu Lin sat in the passenger seat, turning her head to gaze at the scenery outside the window.
Truth be told, there wasn’t much worth looking at. If not for politeness, she would have preferred to close her eyes and rest.
The Fifth Young Miss was not skilled in conversation or socializing; her strengths lay in focus and solitude.
For an omega, would such an alpha be considered dull?
She pondered this but found no answer.
Never mind, she could ask her sisters when she got home.
Gu Lin was too lazy to trouble herself with unnecessary worries. With experienced elders readily available for guidance, why should she fret over trivial matters?
The snacks intended as a reward for Qin Xia were placed in the back seat. Wen Yan noticed the bag filled with an assortment of sandwiches and milk and directed a question at Gu Lin’s profile.
“Why did you buy so much?”
Did she think Wen Yan was a pig?
Wen Yan felt both annoyed and amused.
“Ah,” Gu Lin turned her head, her expression utterly innocent. “I didn’t know what flavors you like, and I was afraid you might not like them, so I bought a bit of everything.”
Wen Yan’s heart stirred with a gentle ripple. She bit her lip and said, “I’m not picky.”
Meaning: You don’t need to go to such extravagant lengths or be so wasteful in the future.
Gu Lin caught on quickly. Wen Yan rarely shared her preferences, but now her attitude had clearly softened. Seizing the opportunity, Gu Lin asked directly, “So, what do you like to eat?”
Her desire to understand was open and unguarded, like a reckless youth charging ahead without a plan.
“Lots of things. Do you want me to list them all?”
The beauty was speechless and shot Gu Lin a challenging glance.
“Sure, my memory is pretty good,” Gu Lin replied eagerly, completely missing the romantic undertones and earning herself an eye-roll from the beauty.
“I like anything that tastes good. You could ask what I don’t like instead.”
It seemed the conversation had reached a dead end.
Gu Lin withdrew her gaze and resumed looking out the window.
Wen Xiu, who had been watching their exchange with growing impatience, decided to interject on his own accord.
“My sister loves the food I make the most~”
He emphasized the word “make” and followed it up with a coquettish look at Wen Yan.
“Right, sis?”
The young man’s tone was soft and dependent. Wen Yan’s lips curled into a smile as her doting-sister instincts kicked in, and she patted his head.
“That’s right~ I love what my Ah Xiu makes the most~”
Hearing this, Wen Xiu winked suggestively at Gu Lin, who had turned to look at them.
In truth, his cooking skills were rather mediocre just barely passable. But every time, his sister would earnestly finish the meal and offer encouraging feedback.
Once, he had overcooked a steak until it was tough and nearly inedible. He had suggested throwing it away, but his sister still ate most of it.
Back then, he had asked her why she forced herself to eat it.
“It’s not forcing,” she had said. “Ah Xiu put effort into making this for me. I’m eating it happily.”
That was when Wen Xiu understood: his sister might appear strong, independent, and unstoppable, but she deeply valued home and family.
She also cherished anyone willing to cook for her personally.
No matter how unpalatable the meal might be, she would eat it for the sake of their heartfelt effort.
By bringing this up in front of Gu Lin, Wen Xiu hoped that Director Lin would understand: his sister was truly easy to please. She didn’t need extravagant delicacies or romantic dinners, she didn’t care for them at all.
If you came home after work and cooked her a simple, ordinary bowl of tomato and egg noodles, she would be genuinely happy.
Gu Lin watched the affectionate siblings, especially Wen Yan whose doting gaze was almost overflowing, and suddenly felt a pang of jealousy.
“I can cook too.”
The hand resting on Wen Xiu’s head paused. Wen Yan pursed her lips and responded to Gu Lin’s heavily suggestive words with just two light syllables.
“Is that so.”
She seemed completely indifferent.
But if she truly didn’t care, she wouldn’t have responded at all.
Qin Xia, who had been driving all along, stepped in to vouch for her employer.
“That’s right, Director Gu is quite skilled in the kitchen. If you get the chance, Miss Wen, you should try her cooking, you’ll definitely like it!”
“Chances are slim.”
Wen Yan spoke bluntly, not sparing any courtesy. The film was nearly wrapped up, with only a few scenes left it would likely be completed within a week.
After that, aside from promotional events and preview screenings, the two of them would have little reason to cross paths again anytime soon.
Gu Lin fell silent as well, whether in agreement or at a loss for words, and turned to gaze out the window without speaking.
To Wen Yan, for some reason, it seemed like she was sulking.
The silence lasted until they got out of the car. Gu Lin stepped out too, standing before the vehicle, her slender frame appearing somewhat fragile in the summer night.
Wen Yan was still draped in that black blazer Gu Lin’s, carrying her scent.
She took it off, revealing jade-like skin and striking, alluring shoulder lines.
“Thank you.”
Wen Yan handed it over, expressing her gratitude once more.
The summer night breeze carried a slight chill, and as it swept through the shade of the trees, the temperature dropped a few degrees further.
Gu Lin took the blazer, unfolded it, and firmly draped it over Wen Yan’s shoulders her aura leaving no room for refusal.
At her core, she was no timid, submissive puppy.
Wen Yan looked up and met those deep, unfathomable dark eyes, her heart skipping a beat.
A dull ache tugged at her chest.
“Actually, I’m angry.”
Gu Lin looked at Wen Yan and spoke as if to herself.
“You looked so beautiful today, yet you went to see someone else.”
“I know I shouldn’t be, that I have no right, but I’m furious.”
As she spoke, her eyes reddened, as if bearing immense grievance. This side of Gu Lin left Wen Yan flustered and uncertain, even making her feel that her own actions had been truly excessive.
After all, this person had saved her couldn’t she be a little kinder?
Why push her away?
“So don’t thank me.”
“I didn’t save you just to hear those words.”
“And I’ll never acknowledge your gratitude.”
“Then why did you do it?”
Wen Yan tightened her grip on the blazer. She wasn’t cold, yet her body trembled.
Was it so she would feel indebted and offer herself in return?
No, that wasn’t it.
Gu Lin restrained the urge to pull her into an embrace and spoke each word from the depths of her heart.
“To spare you from such a terrible experience.”
“To let your life.”
“Be simple, safe and smooth sailing.”
