- Chapter 20 - Seeing the Childhood Sweetheart, Should I Break Off the Engagement?
You have passed the friend request from “Beautiful Night Scenery Breeze and You” and can now start chatting.
Wen Yan: Such a pretentious and cheesy screen name.
She moved her fingers and sent a smiling emoji over.
It carried the distinct undertone of “spit it out if you have something to say, don’t waste my time with nonsense.”
Beautiful Night Scenery Breeze and You: [Yanyan, after all these years, you still haven’t changed your WeChat ID.]
The other person didn’t grasp the meaning behind the emoji and began reminiscing on their own.
Wen Yan felt a hint of impatience. What now? Trying to rekindle an old flame?
She wasn’t one for small talk with strangers and cut straight to the point.
Wen Yan Doesn’t Want to Paint Anymore: [Who do you think the murderer is?]
Beautiful Night Scenery Breeze and You: [Are you free tonight?]
[I think it’s better to discuss this in person.]
Wen Yan fell silent, tapping her index finger on the desk as she pondered Liang Feng’s intentions.
Did he genuinely have clues and want to help her, or did he have ulterior motives?
Or perhaps he was in cahoots with the murderer, and this was nothing but a trap to lure her out.
When it came to matters of personal safety, Wen Yan had to be extra cautious. The hit-and-run driver had taken their own life out of fear, unwilling to reveal the true culprit, which showed just how powerful and manipulative the person who wanted her dead was.
Wen Yan was afraid.
Since the day she was born into this world, she had walked alone, without companions or anyone to rely on.
Out of self-preservation, Wen Yan informed Officer Bi Yu about her planned meeting with Liang Feng that evening. If anything were to happen, the police would at least have a lead and a direction.
The meeting place was set at a famous three-star Michelin Western restaurant in the capital.
The restaurant was located on the 99th floor of the Empire Building, with floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows. As night fell, the twinkling stars in the sky and the neon lights on the ground mirrored each other, creating a breathtaking view.
It was the perfect spot for couples on dates, alphas proposing, or partners celebrating anniversaries.
Reservations had to be made a month in advance, otherwise, they wouldn’t accommodate you.
By setting the meeting here, had Liang Feng planned this encounter a month ago?
Wen Yan looked at the online introduction of the restaurant, her mind filled with doubts.
Her gaze drifted downward, where a line of fine print at the bottom stated: “No formal attire, no service.”
So many requirements.
Wen Yan sighed, glanced at her golden wristwatch, opened her wardrobe, and began selecting her outfit for the evening.
A wine-red backless evening gown, with cut-out shoulders, a mermaid hem, and a slightly cinched waist.
Her slender waist accentuated her graceful figure.
Her seaweed-like black hair cascaded over her jade-white skin, creating a stunning contrast like an ink-wash painting.
A silver ear chain dangled down, adding an air of elegance and poise.
Black Chanel high heels with red soles and eight-centimeter stiletto heels wearing them felt like stepping out to conquer the world.
Wen Xiu was somewhat mesmerized. His sister was truly stunning beautiful yet sharp. Her vibrant lipstick, intricate nail art, and the expensive handbag she carried all seemed to challenge any alpha who coveted her.
A silent declaration: I won’t let you have me so easily.
Go ahead, try to flirt, try to charm, release your proud pheromones and hormones.
See if I’ll fall into your trap, see if I’ll yield.
“What, stunned speechless?”
Wen Yan pinched her younger brother’s cheek. Wen Xiu was still young, with adorable baby fat on his face, making his cheeks particularly satisfying to squeeze.
Wen Yan was getting addicted.
Wen Xiu looked up at his sister with admiration.
“Sis, you’re so pretty~”
“Super, super, super gorgeous!”
“No one could ever be more beautiful than you!”
The little follower was gradually turning into a devoted admirer.
Wen Yan smiled silently, then her expression turned serious as she spoke to Wen Xiu with a grave look in her eyes.
“Your sister is going to meet Liang Feng and will have dinner outside. If you’re hungry, order takeout, don’t go out, understand?”
“If anything happens, call me.”
“Got it?”
Wen Xiu frowned immediately upon hearing this and grabbed Wen Yan’s pinky finger, hoping to persuade her to take him along by acting cute.
But Wen Yan firmly refused.
If Wen Xiu were there in such a situation, it would only distract her further.
She had a way to ensure her own safety, but if anything happened to her brother.
Wen Yan would lose her composure and rationality.
She would go mad, doing things she could never take back.
Wen Yan knew herself well and was certain of it.
At times like these, her sister became domineering and decisive, leaving Wen Xiu no room to argue.
Wen Xiu understood that his sister was protecting him, so he said nothing more and silently watched her leave.
The door closed.
Wen Xiu took out his phone and immediately sent a message to Director Lin.
He was an omega, not strong enough to protect his sister.
But someone else could.
Fortunately.
Someone could.
Someone was willing.
The sapphire-blue Panamera roared down the highway, its engine growling like a restrained beast.
Inside the car, the woman wore sunglasses, her crimson lips striking. Even without seeing her face, her charm was undeniable.
The Lamborghini had pulled up alongside her for the third time. The cars behind blared their horns incessantly but didn’t dare to overtake forcefully.
They couldn’t afford the risk.
Wen Yan glanced at the Lamborghini beside her, switched from automatic to manual, accelerated, shifted gears, and overtook in one fluid motion sleek and skilled, like a seasoned racer.
Her high heel pressed firmly on the accelerator as Wen Yan felt the adrenaline surging through her.
She suddenly felt like laughing, like opening the convertible top and laughing out loud.
She wanted to be impeccably dressed while doing the wildest things.
But in the end, she did nothing, driving coldly toward her destination.
She successfully left the troublesome car behind, guiding her vehicle as it slowly entered the underground parking lot of the Empire State Building.
She still had half an hour before the scheduled meeting.
Wen Yan removed her sunglasses and took out suppressants and a concealment patch from her bag.
In this world, omegas experienced a 2–3 day estrus cycle each month, similar to a menstrual period. Wen Yan always injected suppressants just before it began, to avoid being caught off guard by uncontrollable urges.
Thanks to her caution, she had never experienced loss of control or intense heat.
Today, her estrus was still nearly a week away, but the other party was an alpha with unclear intentions and he was prepared.
She had to be extra careful, leaving no room for error.
Suppressants came in two forms: oral and intravenous. The former was safe but had lower efficacy and took longer to work; the latter was painful and required skill to administer, but it acted quickly and had excellent immediate and lasting effects.
Wen Yan lowered her eyes, inserted the needle into her left forearm, and pushed the plunger expressionlessly.
Then she pulled it out and tossed it into a trash bag.
Perhaps she had pressed a bit too hard, as a drop of blood appeared when she withdrew the needle. Wen Yan took a tissue and pressed it against her arm.
She didn’t like injections.
But this world always forced her to do things she disliked.
The bleeding stopped.
Wen Yan tossed the paper ball into the trash bag, picked up her purse, checked the voice recorder inside, and stepped out of the sports car.
Her phone screen lit up with a message from Liang Feng, a photo showing an elegantly set table with the seat opposite conspicuously empty.
He had already arrived.
Wen Yan couldn’t be bothered to reply and headed straight into the elevator.
The doors slid shut and reopened, depositing her on the 99th floor of the Empire State Building.
A clean-cut beta waiter approached, smiling as he asked if she had a reservation.
Wen Yan gave Liang Feng’s name, and the waiter flashed a professional, eight-tooth smile before guiding her to the reserved table.
Though it was still early, the restaurant was already quite full. Wen Yan scanned the room, paying particular attention to the direction of the restrooms.
As she surveyed her surroundings, others were watching her too.
Liang Feng straightened his tie, picked up the large bouquet of roses from the table, and rose to greet his companion.
Just as she remembered, he was handsome and poised, carrying himself with the kind of charm that could easily captivate an ordinary omega.
“Yanyan, you’ve grown even more beautiful.”
“So, dazzling I can hardly look at you.”
Wen Yan eyed the bouquet he offered but had no desire to take it. Instead, she instructed a nearby waiter to store it for her, saying she’d collect it on her way out.
Liang Feng’s polite smile didn’t falter, though his eyes darkened slightly.
Once seated, Wen Yan didn’t even glance at the menu and cut straight to the point.
“I’m only here for news about the murderer.”
Everything else was irrelevant and held no interest for her.
Liang Feng lowered his gaze briefly, his eyes catching the time on his wristwatch before he looked up with a gentle, brotherly smile.
“I know. How about we talk over the meal?”
Ignoring her furrowed brow, he turned to the waiter and said,
“Serve the dishes.”
