- Chapter 19 - Break Off the Engagement, Mama's Boy
Gu Lin froze in place, desperately wanting to turn and leave.
Yet the ingrained obedience to her elder sister, cultivated since childhood, kept her feet rooted to the spot, unable to take a single step.
Then, just like petting a dog, Sisi proceeded to thoroughly knead and squeeze her face to her heart’s content.
Gu Lin had always been cold-natured since she was young. Despite being the youngest in the family, she often wore an expressionless face.
The combination of her deadpan demeanor and her loli appearance multiplied her cuteness exponentially, making people want to pat her head, pinch her cheeks, hug her, and shower her with kisses whenever they saw her.
Whenever Ye Lan took Gu Lin out, the little girl would return covered in lipstick marks and saliva from the enthusiastic aunties and sisters who couldn’t resist her.
It was an overwhelmingly affectionate scene.
The sight of the little girl frowning while wiping off the drool was both awkward and adorable, triggering the maternal instincts of those doting aunties to start another round of hugs and kisses.
Her aversion to getting close to omegas stemmed precisely from such childhood trauma.
Tilting her head back, Gu Lin let Sisi knead her face however she pleased. She didn’t get angry, instead secretly feeling relieved in her heart.
Since it was a family dinner, she hadn’t worn any makeup only applying a light base.
Otherwise, Sisi’s hands would be covered in powder now, and her own makeup would have smeared beyond recognition.
“You’re still the best, Xiao Wu~”
Having had her fill of “petting the dog,” Gu Sisi’s mood improved accordingly. Her almond-shaped eyes curved into smiles as she ended her less-than-three-minute runaway journey.
Returning home, Gu Lin first went to her room to take a shower and changed into loose, comfortable loungewear. By the time she came downstairs, it was just time for the meal to begin.
The long dining table was laden with delicious dishes, and Butler Zhong had even brought up aged red wine from the cellar that had been stored for years.
Gu Lin automatically took her seat at the far end of the table and enjoyed a quiet, warm lunch with family members she hadn’t seen in a long time.
After the meal, having been forewarned by Sisi, Gu Lin knew what was coming next, the merciless interrogation and questioning. She tried to slip away from the table immediately, claiming she was tired and needed to return to her room for a nap.
But Ye Lan simply looked up, smiled gently, and asked softly, “Is my dear really that sleepy?”
Gu Lin retracted the leg she’d already stretched out, obediently sat back on the sofa, and shook her head dutifully.
“Not sleepy, I slept a bit on the plane.”
“Mom, if you have questions, just ask.”
Gu Lin had given up. Back when her older sisters were dating, their parents would put them through the same ordeal interrogating them to the terrifying extent of how many people their partner’s ancestors three generations back had liked.
At that time, sitting on the sidelines, she had found it quite amusing. As the youngest fifth miss, it was rare to see her older sisters looking frustrated, aggrieved, and utterly annoyed yet not daring to lose their temper.
Now the tables had turned. Gu Lin sighed deeply in her heart, just hoping they would make it quick and spare her some of the torment.
She felt rather tragic and resigned, as if heading to the guillotine.
Meanwhile, on the other side, Wen Yan received an invitation from her childhood friend.
Director Lin had some matters to attend to, giving the film crew a day and a half off. Wen Yan had already wrapped up filming for both of her projects in the capital, and her role in “Martial Emperor” had been taken by someone else, so she suddenly found herself with free time.
While asking Jin Yin for new scripts, she also considered whether to take her younger brother Wen Xiu somewhere to relax.
Coincidentally, Wen Xiu mentioned wanting to drop out of school to follow his sister and learn about being an agent and makeup artistry.
Wen Yan wasn’t particularly fixated on academic qualifications and respected Wen Xiu’s choice, so she agreed.
The siblings returned to the capital together.
After arriving home and giving the place a thorough cleaning, it was already mealtime. Wen Yan took out her phone to order delivery, then headed to the bathroom for a shower.
While washing her hair, the phone rang, an unfamiliar local number without a saved contact. Wen Yan assumed it was her food delivery arriving earlier than expected. She turned off the shower, wiped her hands casually, and picked up the call.
“Hello?”
“Is that Yanyan?”
?
It was an unfamiliar man’s voice.
Wen Yan frowned, instinctively wanting to hang up. But then it occurred to her that it might be someone the original owner of this body knew, so she patiently asked, “This is Wen Yan. May I ask who’s speaking?”
The voice on the other end immediately brightened, its pitch rising slightly. “Yanyan, it’s Liang Feng!”
Who?
Her frown deepened, almost forming a small wrinkle.
Perhaps sensing Wen Yan’s indifference, Liang Feng grew anxious and flustered. “Are you still mad at me? It was my fault back then. We…”
Upon hearing the words “back then,” Wen Yan relaxed her brow, lowered the phone, and decisively ended the call.
That gave me a scare. I thought it was some unlucky relative, but turns out it’s just the original owner’s old flame.
She breathed a sigh of relief and continued her shower.
Under the warm spray, her thoughts drifted amid the steam.
Liang Feng.
Her damp eyelashes fluttered like delicate, fragile petals.
This body seemed to react to that name, memories churning and resurfacing.
A sunny, carefree young man with a dimple at the corner of his mouth and charming eye folds mischievous yet endearing when he smiled.
He was Wen Yan’s childhood friend, two years her senior.
A charismatic and flirtatious alpha.
Wen Yan rolled her eyes, thinking the original owner’s taste was truly questionable. What was there to like about such an irresponsible playboy?
After her shower, Wen Xiu had already laid out the delivered food on the dining table.
He glanced up to see his sister wrapped only in a towel, his cheeks flushing slightly. “Sis~”
He lowered his head, too shy to look directly. Even though he was an omega too and their bodies were quite similar, he couldn’t help feeling embarrassed.
Like a bashful newlywed.
Wen Yan found it amusing and went back to her room to blow-dry her hair.
During the meal, she casually brought up the earlier incident. Her memories were sparse, and she wanted to gauge how much Wen Xiu knew about Liang Feng.
“Liang Feng called me earlier.”
Wen Xiu’s grip on his chopsticks tightened abruptly. “Is he bothering you again?”
His tone suggested clear disdain.
Wen Yan pondered for a moment and nodded. “He said he was sorry about what happened back then.”
“Are you going to forgive him, Sis?”
As if.
Even though Wen Yan had no idea what had actually transpired back then, upon reflection, the original owner had gone abroad to study alone before even finishing middle school. There must have been some unavoidable reason.
Otherwise, what parents would willingly allow that?
If Liang Feng had truly been important to the original Wen Yan say, a sweet first love or an unattainable crush this body would surely have retained more memories of him.
Just like how she had recalled her brother Wen Xiu.
But aside from a vague impression of his appearance, there was nothing else.
Seems they weren’t even former lovers just childhood friends, at best.
After the meal, Wen Yan played Honor of Kings with her brother.
Both siblings were equally terrible at the game, yet utterly addicted.
They lost match after match in ranked games, their stars dropping one by one.
Frustrated, Wen Yan made her brother use his charm, sending voice messages in the lobby to find guys or girls to carry them to higher ranks.
Wen Xiu went off with a pout and returned triumphantly, bringing back three top-tier gaming experts.
Wen Yan declared she was ready to lie back and enjoy the carry.
The battle was intense, a fight to the death. Wen Yan was frantically tapping her screen when an incoming call suddenly popped up.
Her fingers slipped, and she accidentally accepted the call.
It was that childhood friend of hers, Liang Feng, again.
Suppressing her anger, Wen Yan hung up and hurriedly returned to the game.
Too late their whole team had been wiped out.
The towers and crystal were on the verge of destruction.
The chat in the bottom left corner flooded with insults calling her trash, questioning why someone with her skills would even queue for ranked matches, suggesting she’d be better off playing matching games instead.
Over voice chat, Wen Xiu piped up in a soft, pitiful tone, “Please don’t blame my sister. It’s my fault, I didn’t support her well enough.”
Wen Yan thought to herself, How did I never notice before that my little brother has such a talent for being a manipulative sweet-talker?
And just like that, the three experts kicked Wen Yan from the party, focusing solely on carrying Wen Xiu to a higher rank.
Furious, Wen Yan ruffled her brother’s hair into a bird’s nest once again.
Then she chuckled, patted his head, and went back to her room to read a script.
As she was reading, Liang Feng, the one who just wouldn’t give up sent her a text message, along with a friend request on WeChat.
Wen Yan glanced at them.
[Yanyan, I might know who’s trying to harm you.]
[I just want to help you.]
This guy really knew how to push the right buttons.
Wen Yan smirked slightly and accepted his friend request.
