- Chapter 16 - Want a Green Hat or Want to Break Off the Engagement
“Is this a confession?”
Wen Yan focused her gaze, just as a gust of wind swept by, lifting the hem of her costume and the long hair she had tied up, making her look both elegant and enchanting.
“Not exactly.”
Gu Lin’s voice was cool and detached, yet her eyes held a gentle warmth. “The timing isn’t quite right.”
Wen Yan frowned. Did that mean he would choose a more appropriate moment to formally confess later?
To be fair, Director Lin was undeniably attractive, with a face that blurred the lines between masculine and feminine beauty. His demeanor was striking clean and refreshing. He was diligent in his work, came from a privileged background, and possessed a noble character. Professionally, they could support each other, making him a very suitable choice as a partner.
That is, if Wen Yan weren’t already bound by a prearranged marriage.
She never forgot for a moment the engagement she had with the Fifth Young Miss of the Gu family. Until the marriage contract was annulled, out of a sense of responsibility to herself and others, she couldn’t allow herself to fall recklessly in love.
Otherwise, she would only upset the Gu family and create trouble for herself.
Although she felt a slight fondness for Director Lin, it wasn’t enough to prompt her to rush into breaking off the engagement with the Gu family anytime soon. Actress Ye Lan and the renowned agent Sister Jinyin had been immensely helpful to Wen Yan’s acting career. If she wanted to go far, she had to cling tightly to the Gu family’s influence and maintain her role as their nominal daughter-in-law.
Even though she hadn’t even met her fiancée, the Fifth Young Miss of the Gu family.
Naturally, she wasn’t particularly eager to meet her either.
She was sure the other party felt the same way.
Now, faced with Director Lin’s subtle hints of affection, Wen Yan felt it was her duty to be honest about her situation.
It was both a persuasion and a test.
She wanted to see how he would react upon learning she had a fiancée.
“I’m engaged.”
Director Lin blinked, momentarily stunned, a rare expression that made him look unexpectedly adorable.
“I…”
Gu Lin almost blurted out, “I know,” but caught himself just in time and quickly changed his words.
“I don’t mind!”
?
It felt as if he were cuckolding himself.
Gu Lin mulled it over, his expression turning rather complicated.
Wen Yan was also taken aback by such a straightforward response. She hadn’t expected Director Lin to be so deeply infatuated with her in such a short time that he wouldn’t even mind being the third party. Though inwardly pleased with his answer and even a little smug, Wen Yan still felt compelled to advise him.
“You really should mind a little.”
Her tone was somewhat helpless, as if scolding a misbehaving but endearing child.
Wen Yan, a career-driven woman at heart, slipped into lecture mode. “Besides, I’m at a critical stage in my career right now and don’t want to be distracted by anyone else.”
“Thank you for your care, Director Lin, but no one can protect another person forever.”
“I’ll take care of myself.”
Wen Yan had seen too many admirers who claimed to offer protection but were actually seeking to confine her trying to coax her into shedding the fangs and claws she relied on for survival, only to lock her in a beautiful cage and turn her into a caged bird.
Most of them spoke sweetly, like poetry. They promised the bird exquisite food and a tranquil environment, so it would no longer need to fear or sing for its supper.
But these people could never understand that once the bird traded its freedom and dignity for a comfortable life, it would be haunted by the fear of abandonment.
Its clear voice would lose its purpose, its beautiful feathers would go unappreciated.
It would grow silent and despondent, withering away in sorrow.
Wen Yan was never meant to be a caged bird, she was an ambitious little fox.
Like all fox spirits from the Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio, she relied on her beautiful appearance to navigate the human world and cultivate her powers until she became the most formidable nine-tailed fox.
She effortlessly toyed with those who lusted after her body.
Other little foxes would encounter impoverished scholars, convinced they had found true love, and foolishly abandon years of cultivation to run off with them. The result was always either utter annihilation or eternal separation, leaving behind tragic yet foolish love stories.
When faced with the affections of a poor scholar or the admiration of a wealthy young master, Wen Yan would simply roll her eyes and snap:
“Don’t disturb my cultivation!”
Nothing was more important than her grand ambition of becoming an award-winning actress!
It was her life’s dream, the fire of her desires.
However, fate was not on her side, the path of a fox’s cultivation was destined to be fraught with turbulence.
Just as the day for The Martial Emperor to begin filming approached, with Wen Yan having nearly memorized her entire script, she received a notification from the director.
Her role, the character Rong’er, had been replaced.
Such occurrences were common in the industry. Only a handful of dramas and films achieved popularity each year, and even fewer had standout roles.
The competition in the industry was fierce, with hordes of fresh-faced young talents joining every year, scrambling to climb their way up.
Every potentially breakout role would be fought over tooth and nail.
Some were even treated as commodities with fixed prices, auctioned off in shadowy, under-the-table markets.
Those who skyrocketed to fame overnight all had powerful financial backing and connections without exception.
Director Liu Zhenglong felt deeply apologetic about the sudden change. After all, Wen Yan was the one he had personally chosen during the auditions. Unfortunately, he couldn’t resist the pressure from the investors who forced their own candidate into the role, leaving him no choice but to compromise.
As compensation, he promised Wen Yan the female lead’s supporting role in his next project, mentioning that he was already in talks with investors and just waiting for approval from the broadcasting authorities.
Wen Yan received the news on the set of Rivalry. Her expression visibly cooled.
She was disappointed, but there wasn’t much emotional turmoil. Nor did she feel the same indignation she had in her early years after debut.
Her younger brother, Wen Xiu, asked what had happened.
Wen Yan replied to Director Liu with a few polite words, putting on a facade of understanding and magnanimity, then handed her phone to her brother.
“Nothing much, just had my role snatched away.”
“Who took it? How shameless!”
Wen Xiu pouted angrily, even stomping his foot childishly.
He had been particularly lively lately, but this was different from before like a kitten with its fur bristling. Wen Yan found it amusing and pinched his cheek, her peach-blossom eyes full of teasing.
“What, is my little A-Xiu going to avenge his sister?”
With your small frame, even if you stretched out your claws, it would only tickle them.
Wen Xiu understood his sister’s teasing and blushed, muttering under his breath,
“I’ll become her anti-fan.”
“Just focus on being your sister’s loyal fan, that’s enough~”
Wen Yan tapped his fair, clean forehead.
“So, who exactly took your role?” Wen Xiu showed rare persistence, determined to know the person’s name.
Wen Yan gave him a strange look. “Why are you so curious?”
Wen Xiu shrank his head slightly. It wasn’t curiosity, he wanted to tell Qin Xia, Assistant Director Lin’s assistant, that someone had bullied his sister!
After working together on set for so long, Qin Xia and Wen Xiu had long since reached a consensus regarding Director Lin and Wen Yan’s relationship.
Qin Xia knew that Wen Yan was the Fifth Young Lady’s fiancée.
Wen Xiu noticed that Director Lin was particularly concerned about his sister.
Thus, the two often gossiped about the progress of their relationship, exchanging information with each other.
The matter of Wen Yan buying red wine before filming was also revealed by Wen Xiu to Qin Xia, who then passed it on to Gu Lin.
In Wen Xiu’s eyes, Director Lin seemed to come from a prestigious family. Even if he couldn’t reclaim the role that had been snatched from his sister, he could at least help her vent her anger.
And so, without Wen Yan’s knowledge, the story was exaggerated and spread to Gu Lin’s ears.
“Director Lin!”
“Miss Wen Yan was bullied on the set of ‘Martial Emperor’!”
“Not only was she insulted, but her role was also taken from her!!!”
Gu Lin: ?
Who dares court death like this?
