- Chapter 15 - Confession Cannot Stop the Annulment
Mountains of gold and silver can’t compare to my Sansan: [How did he provoke you?]
Jin Yin, as the Gu family’s son-in-law, had mastered the family tradition of being fiercely protective especially when it involved the youngest and most doted-on, Xiao Wu.
No need to ask it was definitely Han Lu’s fault.
Xiao Lin is filming: [He tried to seduce my female lead on set.]
Seeing this, Jin Yin’s eyebrows nearly knitted into a straight line as countless thoughts raced through his mind.
Who is her female lead?
Does Xiao Wu like this female lead?
Does Xiao Wu have someone she likes now?
Then what about Wen Yan?
Finally, Jin Yin patiently asked her:
[Who is your female lead?]
Xiao Lin is filming: [Wen Yan.]
Jin Yin: Excuse me?
His hand trembled, and he failed to grip his latest Banana phone firmly, it fell to the ground with a sharp crack.
Jin Yin didn’t even have time to feel heartbroken over the phone. He quickly picked it up, eager to clarify the situation so he could report it to the film queen, Ye Lan.
But alas, the screen was completely shattered, covered in artistic, web-like cracks.
He tapped it, but there was no response. Jin Yin took a deep breath and decided to pin the blame for this on Han Lu.
After all, his Sansan was an absolute sis-con who loved her sister dearly, and by extension, Jin Yin couldn’t bring himself to take his frustration out on Xiao Wu.
Fortunately, he had a backup phone. Jin Yin logged in and continued his conversation with Xiao Wu.
Have Xiaoxian but no Sansan: [Do you really want to blacklist Han Lu?]
Jin Yin could understand Xiao Wu’s complicated feelings finally liking someone, only to find that person is both his fiancée and the film’s female lead, and now being harassed by the male lead.
But this involved the film’s promotion and the company’s interests. Blacklisting a star was a minor issue; the aftermath was the real problem.
Most importantly, Han Lu had a good image and decent acting skills, he had the potential to become one of the new generation’s cash cows in the film industry.
Jin Yin was the perfect blend of a miser and a workaholic; he didn’t want to miss any opportunity to make money.
Xiao Lin is filming: [He has talent but no virtue.]
Gu Wu wasn’t one to speak ill of others behind their backs, even if the person truly had poor character. These four words were already her limit.
But then it occurred to her, the entertainment industry was vast and murky. What right did she have to demand that others be virtuous and upright?
Gu Lin realized she was overreacting and felt somewhat annoyed.
Wen Yan was beautiful and attractive it was only natural that flies would buzz around her. If she made a fuss over every fly, wouldn’t that be making a mountain out of a molehill?
Besides, Wen Yan was only her fiancée in name. Gu Lin clearly remembered that this person wanted to break off the engagement and had no feelings for her.
Gu Lin had no standing or right to chase away the admirers around Wen Yan.
Xiao Lin is filming: [Forget I said anything. Consider this matter over. Sorry to bother you, Sister Jin Yin.]
Have Xiaoxian but no Sansan: [So, no blacklisting Han Lu?]
Xiao Lin is filming: [I was just being impulsive. I’ll handle this myself.]
Why use a sledgehammer to crack a nut?
Han Lu was an actor under her management. If Gu Lin really wanted to deal with someone, she had plenty of methods and means it just depended on whether she was willing to do it.
Whether she was willing to misuse her authority and seek personal revenge for Wen Yan.
Wen Yan had only stayed in the room for a short while. She left almost immediately after Director Lin.
Because of Han Lu’s pestering, people on set were already gossiping about her. The director was also an alpha, and Wen Yan didn’t want to stir up too much talk.
Because of this secondary gender, Wen Yan felt the range of people she could interact with was pitifully narrow; she not only had to keep her distance from men but also be wary of female alphas and betas.
Even though Wen Yan disliked socializing and had a personality that was hard to approach, this sense of constraint was far from pleasant.
She felt like a lamb that had wandered into a hunting ground, surrounded by ferocious beasts with gleaming eyes, waiting for the right moment to pounce.
Han Lu was one of them.
To prepare for the scene that evening, Wen Yan had even asked her younger brother to buy a bottle of red wine.
She wanted to numb her reason and nerves, to stop caring and agonizing over being openly harassed. It would be best to finish the scene in one take.
Afterward, she would return to her hotel, take a thorough shower, and treat it as if she had been bitten by a dog.
Before filming began, the director needed to explain the scene.
Facing the two leads, Director Lin expressionlessly detailed the changes to the scene, clearly emphasizing that the kiss would not involve actual contact only camera angles would be used.
As for the bed scene, only the male lead needed to undress. The female lead would lie on the bed, with a blanket covering both of them.
All close-up shots would focus on the male lead, who needed to convey intense passion.
These changes completely thwarted Han Lu’s plans and significantly increased the difficulty and pressure for him.
His handsome face could no longer conceal his disappointment and anger. Clenching his fists, he demanded, “What’s the point of making these changes?”
Wen Yan also wanted to know, quietly watching Gu Lin.
Her clear, dark eyes were cold and sharp. Gu Lin stood there, his presence commanding and unquestionable.
“In this film, the love between Qi Yan and Yi Feng often seems more like Yi Feng’s one-sided affection. Qi Yan doesn’t show much.”
“This is related to his identity and the responsibilities on his shoulders. He is a prince seeking revenge and cannot indulge in love, at least not openly in front of others.”
“But he does love Yi Feng. The only way to express this love is through their intimate moments.”
“We need the audience to feel Qi Yan’s restrained and suppressed love for Yi Feng. Precisely because he loves her now, his anger and hatred after being betrayed by her will be so intense.”
“Understood?”
What a perfectly self-consistent explanation flawless in logic, righteous and justified.
It seemed entirely devoid of any personal bias.
Han Lu was almost convinced, but the desires within him still clamored in frustration. He had been coveting this cold, alluring omega beside him for a long time. Alphas were like that, the more they were rejected, the more they wanted to conquer.
“Couldn’t the original script also convey Qi Yan’s love?”
Still unwilling to give up.
Wen Yan smiled faintly, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear as she stood to the side, seemingly detached and unbothered.
But in reality, her captivating peach-blossom eyes never left Gu Lin. A woman’s intuition told her that the script changes were for her sake.
This elegant, aloof, yet unexpectedly pure-hearted Director Lin was quietly protecting her.
Gu Lin frowned, unwilling to entertain Han Lu’s persistence any further, and his tone sharpened.
“You can have ideas and questions. That’s fine.”
“But do not question the director’s decisions.”
“Because questioning is useless, the final say is mine.”
“Filming starts at 8:20 sharp. You have twenty minutes to prepare and get into character.”
“Everyone has been exhausted these past few days, and we still have work to do tonight.”
“I hope you won’t deliberately cause trouble for the other crew members.”
“Understood, Han Lu?”
The words were spoken without any courtesy, leaving Han Lu’s face flushed with alternating shades of red and pale anger. Yet, he had no retort and could only slink away dejectedly.
On set, actors were like soldiers, and the director’s words were commands.
Seeing Han Lu leave, Gu Lin felt much of her pent-up frustration dissipate. Her gaze met Wen Yan’s, and her eyes softened almost imperceptibly as she toned down her authoritative demeanor.
“Is there anything else you need?”
Wen Yan shook her head, then squinted and smiled like a cunning, mischievous fox.
“Thank you, Director Lin.”
“What are you thanking me for?”
Gu Lin tilted her head slightly.
So there really were people who did good deeds without expecting recognition.
A faint smile flickered across Gu Lin’s face, but she didn’t acknowledge it, and Wen Yan didn’t press further. Still, the joy and sense of security from being protected completely relaxed Wen Yan’s tense nerves, allowing her to joke around.
“Thank you, Director Lin, for saving me from having to drink another bottle of alcohol?”
Gu Lin noticed her smile but felt a pang of heartache. She had seen that bottle of liquor too.
She knew exactly what that bottle was meant for.
“Do you like drinking?”
“No.”
Beautiful actresses could never escape drinking occasions, whether they were internationally acclaimed stars or unknown newcomers. At banquets, there were always people urging them to drink, their gazes tainted with lewdness and vulgar desires.
Wen Yan had a high alcohol tolerance, a natural gift. In her past life, when pushed to the brink by those despicable men, her temper would flare, and she’d drink them all under the table.
Then she’d go home, hug the toilet, and vomit until she passed out, tears streaming down her face.
Wen Yan didn’t like drinking because it was never by her own choice.
Moreover, if she got drunk, there was no one to take care of her.
“If you don’t like it, then don’t drink.”
Gu Lin’s voice was soft, carrying a faint, almost imperceptible sigh.
But it wasn’t a matter of liking or disliking she simply had no choice.
Wen Yan smiled without responding.
This was probably the difference between her and Director Lin. Those who didn’t have to struggle for survival could afford to do as they pleased, carrying themselves with an air of superiority even at work.
“As long as I’m here, you don’t have to do things you don’t like.”
Wen Yan looked up. Had she just heard a confession?
As if understanding Wen Yan’s doubt and speculation, Gu Lin gazed at her tenderly, the former coldness melting into a continuous flow of gentle water.
That water gathered into waves, relentlessly crashing against the doors of Wen Yan’s heart.
“I’ll handle everything.”
