- Chapter 17 - Do You Want a Vest or to Break Off the Engagement?
When Qin Xia saw the message Wen Xiu had sent, his simple brain instantly exploded like a firework. Without a second thought, he dashed off to find Fifth Miss.
Oh no! Your future wife is being bullied!
As Fifth Miss’s assistant, he had to share her urgency. A few days ago, Fifth Miss had been rejected after confessing her feelings, and now Wen Yan was being humiliated this was the perfect opportunity to prove his worth!
Here it comes, the love flag is waving!
Qin Xia could already picture the two of them happily walking into a white chapel to get married.
When Gu Lin heard Qin Xia’s report, the temperature around her plummeted below freezing. Her icy expression sent a shiver down Qin Xia’s spine.
This is bad. Fifth Miss has always been aloof and indifferent in her interactions with others. Now that she’s angry, it’s like an arctic freeze.
“Who took her role?”
After reading the message Wen Xiu had sent to Qin Xia, Gu Lin’s voice was low and chilling.
Ugh, even though it was summer, Qin Xia felt like putting on a thick down jacket.
“It’s not clear yet. Miss Wen Yan didn’t say.”
“I suspect Director Liu didn’t inform her either, to avoid future awkwardness.”
“When does The Martial Emperor start filming?” Gu Lin pinched the bridge of her nose and closed her eyes to rest.
“It should be next Monday. Actors have been gradually joining the crew these past few days.”
“It’s not appropriate for me to get involved directly. Go contact Sister Jinyin and tell her everything.”
When Gu Lin opened her eyes again, her gaze was sharp and piercing, completely devoid of her usual calm indifference.
“I want to know that woman’s name and the forces backing her.”
“I want that role returned to Wen Yan openly and honorably.”
“I want Wen Yan to be happy and at ease on set when the drama starts filming.”
Gu Lin turned and fixed her eyes on Qin Xia, her gaze intense.
“Do you understand what I mean?”
Qin Xia stood at attention and saluted. “Understood, Commander!”
He turned to leave but was stopped by Gu Lin.
“Wait.”
Qin Xia looked back. The fiercely protective wife-obsessed madwoman from a moment ago had vanished, replaced by someone hesitant, with a faint blush on her cheeks.
“Don’t let her know about this.”
Eww!
“Her”
Qin Xia shivered again, goosebumps rising all over his body.
“You can count on me, Director Lin.”
Gu Lin, having completely forgotten Qin Xia’s past record of reporting to her mother, nodded in satisfaction and turned to find Wen Yan, to see if she needed comforting.
But when she looked closely, Wen Yan was happily chatting with the actress playing the second female lead, Le Zheng, about skincare and makeup. They were so intimate, like schoolgirls whispering at the back of the classroom.
She didn’t seem the least bit upset about having her role taken.
Well then.
Gu Lin felt both disappointed and relieved. As long as this incident hadn’t dampened Wen Yan’s spirits, it was fine. After all, Gu Lin was never good with words she was better at irritating people than comforting them. If Wen Yan had been truly upset, she wouldn’t have known how to cheer her up.
With the weight off her mind, her shoulders relaxed slightly. Gu Lin took another look at Wen Yan. The woman’s eyes sparkled, her gaze bright and captivating. Everything else in the world seemed to fade into the background, serving only to highlight her radiance.
Gu Lin’s lips curved into an almost imperceptible smile before she turned and left.
Wen Yan didn’t notice, but the actress playing Le Zheng, Xu Wei, accidentally caught Director Lin’s gentle gaze, and her heart fluttered slightly.
During work hours, Director Lin could be described as cold and unyielding, with eyes only for the visuals, details, and camera angles meticulous and uncompromising in every way.
When had anyone ever seen her so soft, as if she had shed a suit of icy, rigid armor?
Xu Wei found it hard to control her racing heart. Her gaze kept trailing after Gu Lin’s retreating figure, completely forgetting that Wen Yan was standing beside her.
When someone you’ve been chatting with suddenly stops and stares dreamily in another direction, anyone would be curious to see who had captured their attention.
And so, Wen Yan caught sight of the figure about to disappear around the corner.
It was Director Lin.
Somehow, without needing any distinguishing features, Wen Yan could recognize that person from just a simple, blurry silhouette.
“Sister Wen Yan, what kind of omega do you think an alpha like Director Lin would like?”
Xu Wei bit her lip, murmuring softly as she lowered her head, her eyes filled with the unmistakable shyness of a young girl smitten.
Xu Wei’s secondary gender was also omega. Unlike Wen Yan’s striking, unrestrained beauty, Xu Wei was pure and delicate, with lively, deer-like eyes that made her incredibly endearing, the very image of a nation’s first love.
Her personality was that of a sweet, girl-next-door type playful, charming, and cheerful making her especially popular on set.
Since Xu Wei was younger than Wen Yan, Wen Yan saw her as a little sister and rarely felt the need to guard herself around her.
Honestly, faced with such an innocent and harmless face, who could possibly harden their heart?
Except, of course, for Director Lin that unyielding, unapproachable, and “emotionally clueless” alpha.
Wen Yan had heard that once, when Director Lin sneezed, Xu Wei had rushed over to ask if she was catching a cold.
The only response she got was:
“If you know, then stay away from me.”
From then on, Director Lin earned the nickname “Iron-Willed Straight Alpha” on set.
Wen Yan suddenly found it amusing, especially when she recalled how that same person had blurted out “I don’t mind” upon hearing she was engaged. It was hard to reconcile that image with the “iron-willed straight alpha” everyone described.
But she hadn’t expected Xu Wei to genuinely like Director Lin. Usually, Xu Wei flitted around like a little sprite among male alphas and betas, even chatting and laughing with the playboy Han Lu.
Wen Yan had assumed she preferred men.
Now, this was a headache. The alpha the young girl had a crush on had just confessed to her. How was she supposed to answer the lovestruck girl’s question?
What kind of omega does she like?
She likes an omega like me.
That would be a deadly answer, one that could easily jeopardize their friendship over an alpha.
Alphas are all such troublemakers.
A thought surfaced vividly in her mind, vaguely familiar.
“I’m not sure, but what is it about her that you like?”
Xu Wei’s fair face instantly flushed bright red, radiating the coy charm of a young maiden.
“I don’t like her, I just… I just think Director Lin is special.”
As she spoke, her voice grew softer and softer, as if even she didn’t quite believe her own words.
So adorable.
Wen Yan’s eyes curved into a smile. In their circle, such pure and innocent little sweethearts were truly rare, and she couldn’t resist the urge to tease her.
“What’s so special about her? I think Director Lin is pretty ordinary~”
Sure, she might be a little better-looking, with a slightly more impressive figure, but those were just superficial traits.
Wen Yan tried to convince herself.
“That’s right, in Director Lin’s eyes, everyone is the same.”
“She doesn’t look down on omegas, nor does she show so-called gentlemanly courtesy toward omegas like other alphas do, treating them specially.”
“Remember Anran, the lead actor from Yifeng? He always used his omega status to demand special privileges in the crew, causing endless trouble.”
“Director Lin paid no attention to it, treating omegas and alphas equally.”
“It’s as if, in her eyes, the differences brought by secondary genders don’t exist.”
“Or as if secondary genders themselves don’t exist at all.”
“I just think she’s so special, so cool~”
Xu Wei’s praise gradually trailed off as she covered her flushed little face. Her deer-like eyes blinked through the gaps between her fingers, utterly endearing.
Wen Yan couldn’t help but chuckle. Perhaps due to her transmigration since her previous world didn’t have secondary genders like ABO, she didn’t have strong feelings about these reclassified physiological changes. The only thing that bothered her was the omega’s nearly regressive “physiological cycle.”
Therefore, Xu Wei’s words didn’t resonate much with Wen Yan. Director Lin wasn’t so much an advocate for equality between alphas and omegas as she was inherently aloof and indifferent.
Whether you were an alpha or an omega, she didn’t care. Gender couldn’t be an excuse to delay her filming.
At her core, she was just a ruthless, exploitative capitalist.
Wen Yan glanced pityingly at the naive and clueless Xu Wei, thinking how silly and adorable this little deer was, falling for a wolf in sheep’s clothing, a Tibetan Mastiff disguised as a lamb.
