The Movie Queen’s Charming Little Wife: Feigning Amnesia Online - Chapter 46
Chapter 46
Lin Mo had messaged Qing Jing to take leave first thing in the morning, deciding to spend the day properly looking after Xue Luhe. However, it didn’t take long for her to realize she wasn’t actually of much use.
Xue Luhe enjoyed the hospital’s premier services; doctors and nurses came in rounds to check her vitals and offer warm greetings, and the four “Auntie” caregivers rotated shifts to look after her. Lin Mo often felt like she was just getting in the way.
Supposedly, Xu Lu had already blocked numerous visitation requests from business partners and high-profile fans; otherwise, the room would likely be even more crowded.
The hashtag #XueLuheFallsAndFracturesInSnow had been trending for a long time. In this day and age, such news was impossible to keep secret. Xu Lu’s phone was ringing off the hook, and she was fighting with all her might to keep the powerful and influential visitors at bay.
Lin Mo sat blankly to the side, watching the caregivers wipe Xue Luhe’s hands and face and help her change her hospital gown. She couldn’t help but blush a little.
Xue Luhe had such a beautiful figure, yet she lay there allowing herself to be handled like an exquisite, fragile doll. Lin Mo looked away out of shyness, but she couldn’t resist stealing glances back.
The occasional glimpse of skin at her waist was the color of polished ivory—fine, delicate, and incredibly eye-catching.
Once changed, the caregiver took the old clothes to be laundered. Xue Luhe lay under the covers and fell asleep shortly after.
Feeling bored on the attendant’s bed, Lin Mo eventually lay down and fell asleep herself.
She slept until noon. When she woke up and turned her head, she saw Xue Luhe right there.
Xue Luhe was facing her, a faint smile playing on her lips. Her dark eyes were filled with deep, undisguised affection.
But the moment she noticed Lin Mo was awake, Xue Luhe averted her gaze. That waterfall of intense, magnificent emotion was deliberately hidden away.
Lin Mo, momentarily stunned by that look, quickly fell into a state of confusion.
“Um… are you hungry? Does anything hurt?”
Lin Mo felt her own questions were a bit dry.
Xue Luhe said softly:
“Someone will bring food soon. What do you want to eat?”
Lin Mo: “…Anything is fine.”
She got up, washed her face, and sat back by the bed. She and Xue Luhe shared a somewhat awkward, mutual smile.
Seeing that she was truly idle, Xue Luhe asked:
“Would you like to… go take care of your own things?”
Lin Mo was shocked. She looked up and blurted out:
“Are you serious?”
It wasn’t that she found the request unexpected—as the “culprit” who caused the fracture, standing in front of Xue Luhe all the time did feel a bit eyesore-ish.
It was just hard to believe. In the past, Xue Luhe often said things like “You aren’t allowed to leave my sight,” but now she was proactively telling her to go…
Xue Luhe’s gaze shifted to the side. She cleared her throat and whispered:
“I don’t mean I’m chasing you away. It’s just… I don’t want you to waste your time because of me.”
Lin Mo froze for a moment, then turned her face to hide her expression. She said:
“Alright then. I’ll head back first. If you need anything, just call the caregivers or press the bell.”
She tried to sound calm, but Xue Luhe could still hear a slight tremble in her voice.
Is she afraid? Xue Luhe wondered. Afraid that I’m playing hard to get again?
Following her own train of thought, Xue Luhe tried to comfort her:
“Don’t be afraid. I don’t have any ulterior motives. Go back and get some rest.”
Lin Mo gave an ambiguous “mm,” nodded, and turned to leave the room.
Xue Luhe watched her back until the petite figure disappeared out the door, then she bit her lower lip.
Sometimes she couldn’t understand what was wrong with her… she no longer knew how to interact with Lin Mo.
She knew everything she did in the past was wrong, but she didn’t know what was right. She felt that anything she did would only invite Lin Mo’s disgust.
She had a heart full of love but didn’t know how to present it. This left a bitter taste in her mouth.
It was like trying to give a bouquet of flowers to someone with a pollen allergy—it was difficult for both sides.
Around 5:00 PM, the sky outside began to turn overcast again.
Xu Lu stayed in the ward, buried in work. Xue Luhe leaned against the headboard reading a book, occasionally glancing out the window.
“Is it going to snow again with this weather…?” Xue Luhe murmured to herself.
“Likely. The forecast says snow tonight,” Xu Lu responded immediately.
“Hmm… do you think Lin Mo will come back?”
Xue Luhe looked out the window. It seemed like a casual question, but Xu Lu could hear the anticipation and anxiety beneath it.
“Probably not. Your condition is stable now, and she has work tomorrow. There’s no need for her to come back.”
Xue Luhe nodded, seemingly accepting this explanation, and fell silent.
She picked up her book to read, but five minutes passed and the page hadn’t turned.
“Does she… need anything?”
Xu Lu was typing away. It took her a moment to realize Xue Luhe was talking about Lin Mo.
She thought for a bit: “I haven’t received any information regarding that.”
Xue Luhe gave an “oh,” lowered her head back to the book, and lightly brushed her fingers against the pages.
The room was incredibly quiet. Xu Lu used a silent keyboard, so there was no clicking sound—only the occasional rustle of a turning page.
After an unknown amount of time, there was a gentle knock on the door.
Xue Luhe looked up sharply, tossed her book aside, and instinctively sat up straight. She hit her cast, causing her to fall back onto the bed with a wince.
Xu Lu went to open the door. It was the doctor making rounds.
Seeing who it was, Xue Luhe closed her eyes in disappointment and lay motionless, letting the doctor check her.
The doctor gave Xu Lu some instructions and left with the chart. Then a nurse came in to check the IV and other equipment.
Once the room was quiet again, Xue Luhe didn’t even want to pretend anymore. She buried her face in her pillow, staring blankly at the ceiling.
“Xu Lu, have you ever been in love?” she asked ethereally.
“Yes, but I am heterosexual.” Xu Lu answered her boss’s questions directly.
“Oh.” Xue Luhe responded, continuing to stare at the ceiling.
“However, I believe the principles of love are universal. I have some insights you might find useful,” Xu Lu continued.
Xue Luhe didn’t seem interested. She didn’t say yes or no, and her posture didn’t change.
But Xu Lu knew this meant “keep talking.” She pushed up her glasses and summarized seriously:
“The methods of dating can be roughly divided into three parts: chatting, dating, and gift-giving. Each has its own branches, extending into countless choices and techniques. Flexible use of these three combinations will yield immediate results.”
Xue Luhe slowly shifted her gaze from the ceiling to Xu Lu. After a long pause, she nodded:
“Well said. Bonus.”
The corner of Xu Lu’s mouth quirked: “If you have similar questions in the future, please let me know. I will provide suggestions. Rest assured, I have extensive successful experience; I am not just a ‘paper theorist’.”
Xue Luhe’s eyebrows shot up. She asked with sudden interest:
“How many times have you been in love?”
Xu Lu tilted her head back and did the math: “If we count high school, it’s been 8 times so far, not counting the ones that lasted less than three months. And I’ve dated all types—from ‘uncles’ to ‘little brothers’.”
Xue Luhe: “…I didn’t realize there was a hidden dragon amongst my staff.”
Xu Lu smiled with a hint of pride: “Being able to help you is my greatest joy.”
Xue Luhe returned to her thoughts.
Later, when the sky was completely dark, there was another knock.
Xu Lu went to open it. Xue Luhe frowned, annoyed: “Can they stop coming? This isn’t a marketplace…”
However, a crisp, bright voice came through, sounding confused:
“Huh? Are you afraid of the noise? Then I’ll just drop these off and leave…”
Xue Luhe turned her head so fast she nearly strained her neck. Seeing Lin Mo standing at the door with a lunch bag, her eyes filled with surprise:
“No, no, no! I wasn’t talking about you! Why are you here so late?”
Lin Mo smiled, carrying a floral cloth bag specifically for lunch boxes. She walked over and set it on the nightstand:
“I stewed some soup for you. I was afraid you wouldn’t eat properly and wouldn’t recover well. If that happens, it’s still on me—after all, I’m the one who caused the injury. I have to take some responsibility!”
Xu Lu lent a hand, quickly setting up the bed’s dining table and placing Lin Mo’s bag on it.
The bag was a beige floral print, very cute. Lin Mo felt a bit shy, saying:
“The style doesn’t really match you… but I only had one lunch box set at home. Don’t worry, I sterilized it; it’s fine. You should have had dinner by now, so treat this as a late-night snack. Anyway, when you’re sick, you need to eat more to replenish your energy…”
The cloth bag opened to reveal a pink insulated lunch box. Lin Mo lifted the lid, and a rich aroma of chicken soup instantly filled the room.
Xue Luhe was already dazed. With Xu Lu’s help, she propped up her upper body into a comfortable eating position. Xu Lu brought a spoon and brought a sip of soup to Xue Luhe’s lips.
Lin Mo watched nervously from the side.
Xue Luhe kept her eyes on Lin Mo, opened her pale lips, and drank the spoonful of soup.
Lin Mo was so tense she held her breath. She wanted to ask how it was but didn’t dare.
It was Xue Luhe who laughed first. She nodded and said very tenderly:
“It tastes wonderful. It’s the best thing I’ve eaten since I was injured.”
Lin Mo’s face instantly broke into a smile. she pumped her fists happily:
“As long as it’s not bad! I thought it might be a bit too bland when I finished stewing it. For your health, I didn’t add much salt. Actually, the soup is quite simple; you can just drink it like water. Anyway, I looked it up—soup is mostly fat and doesn’t have much nutrition, but you can’t digest meat well right now, so soup is better… I’ll stew more for you tomorrow. What would you like? Or what dishes do you want to eat?”
Xue Luhe’s eyes crinkled. She gestured for Xu Lu to step back, took the spoon herself, and began drinking the soup mouthful after mouthful. It really seemed delicious to her. Listening to Lin Mo’s rambling, her face was full of smiles.
“Anything you make is fine, or even if you make nothing. As long as you come to see me, I’m happy. The cooking is secondary.”
Lin Mo’s face turned red at that. She quickly changed the subject, asking about Xue Luhe’s physical progress.
“I have work tomorrow, so I’ll head back first. I’ll come see you after work tomorrow. You must recover well and eat properly, okay?”
Lin Mo watched until Xue Luhe had finished most of the soup. Then she packed up the dishes, washed them, and prepared to leave.
Xue Luhe’s face was full of reluctance, but she had no valid reason to keep her there. She simply stared at her without blinking.
The intensity of the gaze made Lin Mo’s heart flutter. She grabbed her bag and waved goodbye:
“Take good care of yourself!”
She walked to the door, gave Xu Lu a few specific instructions, and then left.
The moment Lin Mo was gone, the expression on Xue Luhe’s face turned cold and lonely, her disappointment written all over her brow.
Xu Lu said softly: “Why didn’t you ask her to stay? It wouldn’t be a problem for her to stay here, or we could book a hotel right next to the hospital…”
Xue Luhe slowly shook her head, still staring at the door with a lingering, tender gaze.
“If I did that, she would hate me…”
Xu Lu sighed, thinking that the knots in the human heart are truly mysterious. Xue Luhe was such a powerful person, yet she was the complete opposite when it came to her feelings. Was it true that arrogance is just the deepest form of insecurity?
For the next week, Lin Mo maintained the habit of going home after work to cook and bringing it to the hospital. She even bought an electric pressure cooker to stew the soup faster.
Actually, Lin Mo knew the level of her cooking—it was edible, not so bad it would make someone gag, but certainly not a gourmet delight.
So every time Xue Luhe finished the soup, Lin Mo was surprised. Sometimes she couldn’t help but ask:
“Is it really that good?”
Xue Luhe would smile and reply: “It’s delicious. It suits my taste perfectly.”
Lin Mo had nothing to say to that, so she just tried to vary the soups and side dishes, keeping them low in oil and salt while trying to boost Xue Luhe’s calcium intake.
Doing this every day actually made Lin Mo quite tired.
But seeing Xue Luhe visibly regain her color and improve day by day made her own mood much better.
Finally, one day, the doctor informed Lin Mo that Xue Luhe could be discharged. She could recover at home with weekly check-ups.
Upon hearing this good news, Xue Luhe immediately had Xu Lu buy an apartment in the same building as Lin Mo’s.
She claimed: “I want to continue tasting Chef Lin’s handiwork.”
When Lin Mo heard this, she remembered how Xue Luhe living across from her in Su City had nearly scared her to death.
But now, a version of Xue Luhe who couldn’t even walk was living five floors below her. Compared to Su City, Lin Mo was the one who held the upper hand.
Thinking of this, Lin Mo let out a mischievous grin. She was going to show Xue Luhe that she could be a “bad person” too!
She was going to return all the scares she had received from Xue Luhe back to her!
