- Chapter 9 - Bad Woman; Does That Person Have Feelings for Jiang Tan?
Jiang Tan hadn’t forgotten the embarrassment of being questioned by Jiang Yue earlier, even after she had gone downstairs, gotten into the car, and arrived at the construction site.
What on earth? When did she ever say she was going to support her?
Jiang Tan’s face was burning hot; after all, she had never seen anyone “support” someone in such a poverty-stricken way. She felt ashamed of herself.
She was even afraid that Jiang Yue was secretly laughing at her behind her back.
Laughing at her for being a “poor person putting on airs!”
“Xiao Jiang, what’s wrong with you? Why is your face so red?” Sister Zhou, the foreman, looked at Jiang Tan with some concern and asked, “You aren’t running a fever, are you? If you have a fever, you must go back and rest.”
Sister Zhou didn’t dare take that risk, especially in a place like a construction site. If she wasn’t careful and something happened, it could truly be life-threatening.
“No, no, I’m in great health, nothing is wrong. It’s probably just the heat,” Jiang Tan hurriedly explained. She didn’t want to be sent back; otherwise, she would lose a day’s wages.
Sister Zhou looked at her suspiciously. Although she felt it was a bit of a stretch to say it was hot in this kind of weather, since Jiang Tan said so—and indeed seemed lively and energetic—she didn’t say anything more.
Seeing that Jiang Tan was about to get busy, Sister Zhou remembered something and called out to her again, asking, “By the way, I haven’t asked you yet, do you have someone you like?”
Although she knew Jiang Tan was single, Sister Zhou wasn’t clear on whether she had someone in mind, so she wanted to confirm.
“No, why do you ask?” Jiang Tan felt a bit strange.
“It’s nothing, just asking out of curiosity.” Sister Zhou’s smile immediately widened, making her look a bit more approachable and enthusiastic. “Speaking of which, with your good looks, why haven’t you found someone?”
Besides, Jiang Tan was only 23—wasn’t this the prime of her life?
Jiang Tan: “…” When would she even have the time to find someone?
“Cough,” Jiang Tan coughed awkwardly, patted her pocket, and said, “I’m short on cash; I wouldn’t want to waste anyone’s time.”
Sister Zhou: “…” She was certainly honest.
“Alright, go get busy,” Sister Zhou said. Her impression of Jiang Tan improved quite a bit; at least she was someone with self-awareness.
“Oh, okay.” Jiang Tan went back to work, feeling a bit puzzled. But then a thought occurred to her: why did she suddenly ask if I have someone I like? Could she be wanting to set me up on a blind date?
Jiang Tan thought about it for a moment, but the thought was soon replaced by the busyness of her work.
At noon, after Jiang Tan packed up the food and brought it home, she saw that Jiang Yue was already waiting.
From the other woman’s expression, it was obvious that the morning’s job hunt had not gone smoothly.
Jiang Tan didn’t ask any questions regarding that, fearing that Jiang Yue would feel pressured upon hearing it.
“Let’s eat first. The cafeteria had chicken drumsticks today,” Jiang Tan said as she took out the food. However, since the drumsticks were distributed per person and she had only paid for one meal plan, there was naturally only one drumstick.
Jiang Yue looked at the drumstick and said, “You eat it. You’ve worked harder.”
Just thinking about how Jiang Tan had been busy all morning and still had to bring food back for her made Jiang Yue feel a dull sense of guilt. After all, if it weren’t for her, Jiang Tan wouldn’t have to do this at all.
“What’s there to be modest about? It’s not like there aren’t other dishes.” Jiang Tan placed the chicken drumstick directly into Jiang Yue’s bowl. It was mainly because Jiang Yue’s expression was so dejected; she figured she’d treat it as a small comfort.
Jiang Yue looked at the drumstick in her bowl, pursed her lips, and said, “I still haven’t found a job.”
She really hadn’t expected it to be this difficult. Even when she tried to apply as a shop assistant, they didn’t want her. One sentence about “registering identification information” was enough to block her completely.
No one dared to hire someone like her who had no ID.
“Yeah, I told you, don’t worry. It’s not that easy to find,” Jiang Tan said while eating, her mouth full. Exhausted and famished from the intense physical labor, she could no longer care about table manners.
Jiang Yue ate slowly. Although she had Jiang Tan’s comfort, her heart remained heavy. After all, she had seen the family’s financial situation, and at this moment, she had a hidden worry.
She didn’t know when her heat period would come. When that happened, she would definitely need suppressants, but they currently didn’t have the money to buy them.
Furthermore, she didn’t know when Jiang Tan’s rut would occur or if she had any backup suppressants prepared. If not…
Jiang Yue slowly drew in a sharp breath.
Two AOs staying together—it actually cost so much money!
Hearing this, Jiang Tan looked at her strangely. “What’s wrong with you?”
Out of nowhere, why that expression?
Jiang Yue’s throat swallowed slowly. “I just thought about how we’ll have to spend a lot of money on suppressants.”
Jiang Tan was already working so hard, yet she was still this poor because of the suppressant issue. Coupled with a jobless person like herself…
Jiang Yue didn’t dare imagine their future days.
Jiang Tan: “…”
Thanks, you really didn’t have to remind me.
The food didn’t even taste good to Jiang Tan anymore.
“Don’t talk while eating!” Jiang Tan stuffed a large mouthful of rice into her mouth, chewing as if she were biting down on an enemy, with a sense of venting her frustration.
Thinking about these things only made life feel more bitter. As long as Jiang Tan thought about how her pockets were cleaner than her face, she wanted to cry.
If only she had been reborn as a Beta, she would be much better off than she was now!
Jiang Yue silently stopped talking. The two of them finished their meal in silence and placed the trash by the door. Since there was still some time left, Jiang Tan began cleaning the house.
Even though the house was old and worn out in every aspect, Jiang Tan still made an effort to clean the whole place regularly. Otherwise, if such an old house wasn’t cleaned, it would end up looking both dirty and broken, and Jiang Tan would feel disgusted living there herself.
Watching her movements, Jiang Yue stepped forward, wanting to take over the chores from Jiang Tan. “Go take a rest. I’ll handle the cleaning.”
“It’s faster if we do it together. Go wipe down the tables and chairs.” Jiang Tan avoided her hand and assigned her a simpler task. From the way this person mopped the floor yesterday, it was clear she didn’t know how to do it at all. Her attempt to mop it clean resulted in it being very time-consuming and exhausting.
“Oh.” Jiang Yue pursed her lips and did as she was told. However, watching Jiang Tan’s busy figure, she still felt a sense of unease. She had already troubled Jiang Tan too much, yet she couldn’t help her with much.
Jiang Tan’s movements were very fast. Sometimes, while cleaning, Jiang Tan would think that with her speed and skill, she could totally work as a domestic helper!
But being a domestic helper didn’t pay as well as the construction site, and to get assignments from a housekeeping company, one had to pay a training fee upfront. Jiang Tan certainly couldn’t afford that money.
After a full round of house cleaning, Jiang Tan’s lunch break was gone. She picked up the trash to go out, looked at Jiang Yue, and said, “You really don’t need to be that anxious. You can relax at home first, find your bearings, and figure out what you’re capable of before going out to look with a purpose. Otherwise, if you’re too frantic, what if you get scammed?”
It wasn’t that Jiang Tan hadn’t thought about accompanying her to look, but she clearly couldn’t stop her work at the site for the time being; otherwise, they would both be living on “northwest wind” (starving).
Hearing her words, Jiang Yue thought about it carefully; it indeed made sense. At the moment, she was just like a headless fly, lacking any specific goal.
“I understand. I’ll think about it properly,” Jiang Yue said softly.
Jiang Tan didn’t say much more. As she turned to go downstairs, she waved her hand in a gesture of goodbye.
Jiang Yue watched her quick figure heading down the stairs. Jiang Tan always seemed to be in such a hurry, like a spinning top being constantly whipped, unable to stop.
Just as she was about to close the door, the opposite door opened, and she locked eyes with Wang Xiuya, who was about to come out. Jiang Yue gave a slight nod as a greeting.
Wang Xiuya was also startled at first, but a somewhat forced smile appeared on her face as she nodded back. She then watched as the door to Jiang Tan’s home closed.
She was a bit lost in thought. What kind of friend would appear at a friend’s house two days in a row? And…
Yesterday, Wang Xiuya had detected the scent of Jiang Tan’s pheromones on that woman. Had Jiang Tan marked her?
Wang Xiuya sighed softly and stopped thinking further. She closed her door and went downstairs to work as well.
Inside, having closed the door, Jiang Yue recalled the Omega woman she had just seen. She wasn’t sure if it was an Omega’s instinct, but she vaguely felt that the way that person looked at Jiang Tan was a bit off—it didn’t seem like the way one looks at an ordinary neighbor.
Does that person have feelings for Jiang Tan?
Jiang Yue poured herself a glass of water. Reflecting on her interactions with Jiang Tan over the past two days, she felt it wouldn’t be strange at all if someone had feelings for her. After all, Jiang Tan was indeed quite reliable.
Jiang Yue took a small sip of water, but her picturesque eyebrows slowly furrowed, her heart filled with an unknown feeling.
Indeed, if Jiang Tan suddenly started dating, where would she go? By then, her presence would become very inappropriate.
Jiang Yue let out a long sigh. she wasn’t quite sure how Jiang Tan felt about the woman across the hall. If they had mutual feelings, she only hoped they would confirm their relationship after she found a job, had an income, and could rent her own place.
Otherwise, she would be caught in the middle, feeling extremely awkward.
Jiang Tan had no idea what was going on in Jiang Yue’s head back home. All she knew was that when she once again brazenly asked to draw two days’ wages in advance, Sister Zhou gave her a suspicious look.
“You’ve been running off like a flash the moment work ends at noon lately. Why? Is there someone at home?”
And hadn’t she just advanced six hundred? It had only been a day—was it all spent?
Strange, very strange. The current Jiang Tan was too different from her usual self.
“I, no, it’s just…” Jiang Tan suddenly started stuttering, not knowing what to say. If she admitted someone was there, wouldn’t it be like admitting she was skimming off the site’s cafeteria to support another person? But she also didn’t know how to explain away the sudden large expenses.
Sister Zhou narrowed her eyes.
“You’re suddenly spending money so fast. You haven’t run into some bad woman, have you?”
Jiang Tan’s face instantly turned bright red, feeling incredibly ashamed.
“Sister Zhou! What ‘bad woman’ would even be interested in the few measly cents I have?!”
