- Chapter 8 - Embarrassment; "Are You Saying You'll Support Me?"
Jiang Tan felt that no matter how poor one was, boundaries were something that still needed to be observed.
Hearing Jiang Tan’s words, Jiang Yue fell silent. In the end, she didn’t say anything more; continuing the conversation would make her seem somewhat ungrateful. After all, no matter how one looked at it, what Jiang Tan was doing was for her own benefit.
Jiang Tan made a simple, soft bed for herself on the solid wood sofa. Aside from her clothes and a few other things hanging inside, the room was essentially given over to Jiang Yue.
Except for personal undergarments that Jiang Yue needed to hand-wash herself, Jiang Tan tossed all the other clothes Jiang Yue had bought today into the washing machine. She made a mental note to deep-clean the washing machine when she had a bit more free time.
The two were busy with their respective tasks. Once they sat down again, Jiang Tan began to tell Jiang Yue about her situation. Today was a special circumstance, so it wasn’t easy for her to go out and deliver food, but she definitely had to go tomorrow. If she didn’t, she wouldn’t even have the money for next month’s rent.
Hearing what Jiang Tan told her, Jiang Yue pursed her lips. Finally, she asked with some confusion, “Are expenses like rent and utilities that high? You eat the food provided at the construction site; besides that, are there any other expenses that cost a lot of money?”
Aside from helping her buy quite a few things today, she had previously seen Jiang Tan bringing back food from the construction site to eat. Other than that, she hadn’t seen Jiang Tan buy anything else. Moreover, Jiang Tan worked so hard, so why was she still so poor?
After doing the math in her head, Jiang Yue truly couldn’t understand it.
Jiang Tan: “…”
She also really wanted to know where all her money went, but somehow, that money just managed to get spent despite her being so stingy with it.
Jiang Tan let out a long sigh and looked at Jiang Yue with a slightly resentful gaze.
“Do you know how much those two Omega high-potency suppressants you used last night cost?”
Jiang Tan also suspected that because the birth rate in this world wasn’t high, things that could affect the birth rate to a certain extent were sold at very high prices.
Jiang Yue paused for a moment and looked at her with an inquiring gaze.
“They cost one thousand two hundred!!!” Jiang Tan’s voice rose slightly. Her heart ached beyond measure as she clutched her chest and said, “A single shot is 599! Why don’t they just go and commit highway robbery instead?!”
There were even more expensive ones, but Jiang Tan was too cash-strapped to afford them. Fortunately, those two suppressants managed to control Jiang Yue’s condition, even though she had ended up with amnesia.
Jiang Yue’s eyes widened slightly. It seemed that ever since she woke up, she had been constantly facing the issue of Jiang Tan’s poverty. Therefore, upon hearing the price Jiang Tan mentioned, she truly felt a pang of heartache.
One single suppressant cost almost as much as all the things she had bought today.
“Aren’t these necessities? Why are they sold so expensively?” Jiang Yue couldn’t help but ask. If such a sum had to be spent regularly every month, it was no wonder Jiang Tan was so poor.
“I’d really like to know too,” Jiang Tan said indignantly. “The price of ordinary suppressants is between 30 and 150, but for some reason, the high-potency ones just have to be sold so dearly!”
What made Jiang Tan the saddest was that a single suppressant couldn’t completely solve the problems during her rut. This was the fundamental reason why she had always found it difficult to save money.
Although she didn’t want to spend the money, she didn’t want to lose control even more, so she could only pay the price.
Jiang Yue wanted to say something but stopped. Finally, she touched her own gland. At the thought of being an Omega and needing suppressants in the future, Jiang Yue felt that the road ahead was bleak.
She instantly understood Jiang Tan’s urgency to earn money.
After all, it was very likely that spending would outpace earning.
“I will go out and look for a job tomorrow.” Jiang Yue’s tone was serious. The sense of urgency to earn money was pushing her, especially since Jiang Tan had used her last eight yuan today to buy marshmallows for her to eat.
“Yeah, just watch out for your own safety.” Even though Jiang Tan agreed, she didn’t actually hold much hope in her heart. After all, Jiang Yue had no ID; she was essentially an undocumented person now. It would likely be even harder for her to find a job than it was for Jiang Tan.
Jiang Yue nodded, looking quite preoccupied with her thoughts.
“Here is the key to the front door. Don’t lose it; there are only two keys in total.” Jiang Tan handed a key to Jiang Yue. After all, if it got lost, getting a new one made would cost money.
Jiang Yue nodded solemnly and took the key to keep it safe.
“Go take a shower. If there’s nothing else, I want to sleep.” Jiang Tan let out a yawn, a few tears pricking the corners of her eyes. She hadn’t rested well last night, and after being busy for another whole day, since she didn’t have to go out to deliver food anymore, Jiang Tan wanted to rest early to regain her strength.
“Okay, you go to sleep.” Hearing this, Jiang Yue hurriedly got up to make space for Jiang Tan to sleep. She watched as Jiang Tan, dressed in a black short-sleeved shirt and shorts, lay directly down on the sofa. With a long reach, she pulled the blanket over herself and closed her eyes, looking exhausted.
Jiang Yue bit her lip slightly. Jiang Tan’s appearance was undoubtedly very good; she had a refined brow bone and well-defined features. When she smiled, she looked high-spirited and gave off a very warm feeling. Perhaps it was because she didn’t have that “predator looking at prey” look that Alphas usually had when looking at Omegas that Jiang Yue felt so at ease with her.
Jiang Tan’s eyes were very clean…
So clean that it was as if the person standing before her wasn’t an Alpha at all.
Jiang Yue didn’t stay there to disturb Jiang Tan’s sleep. She turned off the living room light and went to shower. By the time she finished, the clothes in the washing machine were also done. She took them to the balcony to hang them up one by one, then stood there blankly looking outside.
In the old urban district, the seventh floor was considered relatively high. By this time, the lights in most households were off. Clearly, the people living in this old neighborhood kept early hours, and at this time of night, it was already quite silent.
No matter how hard Jiang Yue tried to remember, she felt nothing but a blank void in her mind; she couldn’t recall anything else.
Was she going to live like this from now on?
This question suddenly surfaced in Jiang Yue’s mind. She slowly turned to look toward the living room. Thinking of the person who was so tired she had fallen asleep the moment she lay down, a faint smile appeared on Jiang Yue’s lips.
It was already very good, wasn’t it?
According to the situation Jiang Tan described, if she hadn’t met Jiang Tan, and if she had been found by those people, it wasn’t hard to guess what would have happened.
Even if she hadn’t been found by them, waking up the next day still suffering from amnesia after enduring a night of drug-induced torment would have been a disaster.
Therefore, meeting Jiang Tan was already a very good thing.
Jiang Yue slowly exhaled, her chest feeling much lighter. She lightened her steps as much as possible so as not to disturb Jiang Tan and returned to the room. After lying down on the bed and smelling the faint lingering scent of Jiang Tan’s licorice Alpha pheromones, Jiang Yue curled into the blanket in her arms, calmed the ripples in her heart, and gradually fell asleep.
She still needed to go out and find work tomorrow; she couldn’t let all the pressure fall on Jiang Tan.
In the old house, the two were separated by only a wall. It might not have been perfect, but both of them slept surprisingly well. When they woke up, all their previous exhaustion had vanished, and their bodies felt light and refreshed.
Jiang Tan woke up and stretched. She hadn’t had such a good sleep in a long time. It seemed she would have to ensure she got enough sleep in the future; otherwise, she might accidentally drop dead from overwork one day.
Muttering this to herself, Jiang Tan went to wash up and then started making breakfast. Looking at the small partial carton of eggs left: “…”
It’s okay, it’s okay. If I hold on, I should be able to last until payday.
While Jiang Tan was frying the eggs, Jiang Yue also woke up. Seeing Jiang Tan busy in the kitchen, she couldn’t help but walk over quickly, tying up her hair as she went.
“Why did you get up so early? Let me do it,” Jiang Yue said. After all, Jiang Tan was already so tired.
“No need, and besides, do you even know how?” Jiang Tan said casually while flipping the fried egg in the pan.
Jiang Yue: “…”
She watched Jiang Tan’s operations and thought carefully; she really didn’t seem to know how.
Not hearing her speak, Jiang Tan couldn’t help but laugh. “Don’t just stand there. Go wash up; it’ll be ready to eat in a moment.”
“Okay, thank you, Jiang Tan,” Jiang Yue said before leaving.
“Don’t say so much of that ‘this and that.’ Go, go quickly.” Jiang Tan felt her cheeks warming up and hurried her away.
She felt she couldn’t handle this kind of scene. What was it called? Emotional Expression Shame Disorder?
Jiang Tan’s mind wandered aimlessly as she plated the fried eggs and took out the few remaining slices of bread from the fridge.
She had miscalculated a bit. The eggs might last a while, but the bread would be gone after this meal. It wouldn’t be good to only eat one egg for breakfast for the next two days, would it?
Jiang Tan felt a bit worried, but she didn’t show it on her face. After Jiang Yue finished washing up and came out, she called her over to eat breakfast.
Jiang Yue sat down and looked at the breakfast on the table, saying, “I will learn in the future. I’ll cook for you.”
Jiang Tan lazily lifted her eyes to look at her, then her gaze dropped to Jiang Yue’s hands. Those hands clearly looked like they belonged to someone who had been pampered. With those hands cooking for her, Jiang Tan didn’t even want to imagine how much food would be wasted in the beginning before anything edible was produced.
Forget it, she couldn’t afford that luxury.
“No need, I can do it faster,” Jiang Tan refused. Besides, if Jiang Yue did it, wouldn’t she immediately find out that the household was so broke they could barely afford breakfast?
Jiang Yue stared at her. Jiang Tan lowered her head to avoid her gaze. “I’ll probably be back around 12:30 PM. Remember to come back and eat then.”
Jiang Yue didn’t have a phone, so she wouldn’t even know where to look for her.
“Okay,” Jiang Yue agreed.
Before heading out, Jiang Tan looked at her.
“Don’t be in too much of a hurry about finding a job. Take it slow. I won’t let you starve to death.”
Jiang Yue’s gaze froze for a moment.
“Are you saying you’ll support me?”
“…”
