- Chapter 10 - Running Deliveries; She Might Know Why Jiang Tan is Poor
Jiang Tan was so embarrassed that her toes were practically digging a hole in the ground.
After all, she never expected that “bad women” nowadays were also practicing consumer downgrading. Had the threshold for a scam really dropped as low as a few hundred yuan?
Sister Zhou felt a bit awkward hearing her words as well. She coughed lightly, pulled out her wallet, and drew out four hundred yuan. “As long as you weren’t cheated by some bad woman, it’s fine. Now, get to work and take it seriously.”
Jiang Tan took the money, looking at Sister Zhou with a touch of emotion. “Sister Zhou, you really are a wonderful person. I promise to work hard!”
Ugh, getting several days’ wages in advance without a second thought—she had truly encountered a good boss!
Having been owed wages in the past that she still hadn’t recovered, Jiang Tan felt a bit of a sour ache in her heart.
Sister Zhou got a bit of goosebumps from the way she was being looked at. She pushed Jiang Tan’s shoulder and said, “Go, go, go, get to work. Don’t just stand here like a door god.”
Jiang Tan beamed, gave a silly giggle, and ran off happily.
After all, with four hundred yuan back in her pocket, tomorrow’s breakfast was sorted, and she wouldn’t have to go hungry.
After finishing her shift, she didn’t head back immediately after getting her meal. Instead, she went to the supermarket and bought a bundle of noodles, a carton of eggs, and a small handful of green vegetables, planning to make noodles for breakfast the next morning.
When she returned home with the items, Jiang Yue came out of her room upon hearing the commotion. Looking at the things she was carrying, Jiang Yue asked, “You went grocery shopping?”
“Mm, just a few things to make breakfast tomorrow.” With the economic crisis temporarily resolved, Jiang Tan was in a great mood, her voice carrying an upward lilt as she spoke.
Jiang Yue obviously noticed this. Her gaze couldn’t help but settle on Jiang Tan’s face. “What happened? Why are you so happy?”
And didn’t she spend all her money last night? How did Jiang Tan suddenly have money for groceries?
Jiang Tan set the items down and raised her eyebrows, her eyes curving into crescents as she smiled. “I got the foreman to advance me another two days’ wages. If we’re frugal, we can last until the delivery payout on the 20th.”
No wonder.
The corners of Jiang Yue’s lips also lifted into a slight arc. The heavy mood she’d felt all day lightened considerably, influenced by Jiang Tan.
As they ate, Jiang Yue reported her own situation. Because of her amnesia, she often didn’t know what skills she actually possessed, so she hadn’t made much progress throughout the afternoon.
Hearing her words, Jiang Tan consoled her, “No rush. At least we won’t starve. Just keep a relaxed mind.”
To be honest, Jiang Tan felt that Jiang Yue’s psychological resilience was already exceptionally good. Putting herself in those shoes—suddenly losing her memory without a single familiar person around—she would probably be in a total panic. Yet, Jiang Yue had accepted the situation very quickly and was already considering how to find a job and survive.
This person’s adaptability was extremely strong; there was likely no need to worry that she would fare poorly in the future.
Jiang Yue didn’t speak further. She finished the meal quietly with Jiang Tan. Watching her prepare to head out to deliver food right after eating, she couldn’t help but ask, “Can I go out with you? It would also give me a chance to get to know the city.”
Jiang Yue didn’t feel the slightest bit of familiarity with this city. When she went out, she had to make a conscious effort to memorize many things, fearing she might wander too far and fail to find her way back.
Jiang Tan hesitated for a moment. “Alright, but it might be a bit of a toss-up and exhausting. You should be mentally prepared.”
“Mm,” Jiang Yue responded, changed her shoes, and followed Jiang Tan out the door.
While heading downstairs, Jiang Tan opened her delivery platform app while simultaneously answering some of Jiang Yue’s questions about the job.
“If I haven’t found anything to do yet, do you think it’s feasible for me to run deliveries while you’re working?” As she sat on the back of Jiang Tan’s scooter, Jiang Yue pursed her lips, finally asking the thought that was on her mind.
Since Jiang Tan already had a registered identity, couldn’t she use Jiang Tan’s account information to pick up and deliver orders while Jiang Tan was busy elsewhere?
Jiang Tan paused upon hearing this. she couldn’t help but look back at her, then turned her head to keep her eyes on the road ahead. She started the scooter to head toward a pickup, saying, “While you could do that… you’re too beautiful.”
“Huh?” There was a hint of confusion in Jiang Yue’s tone.
She didn’t quite understand. What did delivering food have to do with being beautiful? Wasn’t Jiang Tan herself also very beautiful?
“Let me clarify—it’s not that I look down on Omegas—but you’re so beautiful, and an Omega on top of that. I’m afraid you’ll run into bad people,” Jiang Tan said, pressing her lips together. After all, there was no guarantee that every customer would be decent. Even as an Alpha, Jiang Tan had encountered some greasy, disgusting people who intentionally flirted with her.
They would say things like, ‘Why is someone as pretty as you delivering food? You could just stay home and live in luxury if you followed me.’ It was sickening.
That was why, when Jiang Tan delivered orders, her favorite customers were the ones who left a note saying to just leave the items at the door. That way, she could avoid contact altogether.
“You’ve encountered that before, haven’t you?” Hearing Jiang Tan’s words, Jiang Yue immediately made the connection.
Jiang Tan remained silent. However, her silence at that moment was undoubtedly a silent admission.
“But there will always be bad people in the world. Should I refrain from doing something just because bad people exist?” Jiang Yue’s voice was soft. She could be more cautious and take more precautions, but she absolutely would not be scared away from doing what needed to be done.
Jiang Tan: “…”
She knew Jiang Yue was right, of course, but she still couldn’t help worrying that Jiang Yue might be bullied.
“What do you think?” Jiang Yue asked softly, seeking Jiang Tan’s opinion.
Jiang Tan sighed. “Alright. But you’re not familiar with the city yet. I’ll take you along with me for a while first.”
Even with navigation, GPS wasn’t enough. Some residential complexes were quite convoluted, and some didn’t allow vehicles inside, meaning orders had to be delivered on foot. There were many things to keep in mind.
Hearing her say this, Jiang Yue’s eyes curved slightly as she smiled, giving a soft, compliant response.
Listening to that voice tinged with softness, Jiang Tan’s ears felt a little hot. She thought to herself that this person’s voice was truly versatile; usually, she had the slightly cool, elegant voice of a mature woman, but when she softened it, it was incredibly captivating.
Jiang Tan cleared her throat mentally, tossed those stray thoughts out of her head, and began to describe the city’s layout and which road they were currently on.
Arriving at the entrance of a restaurant, Jiang Tan showed Jiang Yue the information on her phone. “When you come to the merchant to pick up a meal, there will be a pickup code. If the merchant has already prepared it and set it out, just check the platform and the number to take it.”
“Try not to take the wrong one, otherwise it’s a huge hassle to come back and swap it later, and it will eat into the time for your other orders.”
Jiang Yue listened and nodded lightly. She followed her into the shop, watched how Jiang Tan picked up the meal, and committed the entire process to memory.
“Since you aren’t familiar with the surrounding locations yet, you can take one order at a time. This prevents you from failing to plan your time and going over the limit. Once you’re familiar with which shops are in the same direction, or if the delivery addresses are on the same route, you can slowly increase the number of orders,” Jiang Tan shared her experience.
The reason she was able to familiarize herself with the city so quickly was thanks to the memories left behind by the original host; otherwise, she would have been just as lost.
Jiang Yue nodded, following Jiang Tan to the next pickup.
Jiang Yue followed along, learning as she watched. Later on, she asked Jiang Tan to tell her the pickup codes so she could get the items herself. For orders with notes to leave them at the door, she would be the one to deliver them while Jiang Tan waited on the scooter.
Watching Jiang Yue run back, her cheeks slightly flushed from the exertion, Jiang Tan couldn’t help but smile. “There’s still time, you don’t need to be in such a rush.”
Moreover, just the thought of Jiang Yue delivering meals made her want to laugh. This person had probably never imagined in her past life that she would one day be doing this kind of work.
Jiang Yue felt a bit embarrassed but still offered a shallow smile. “If I’m faster, we can take more orders.”
Hearing her say that, Jiang Tan felt a strange pang of bitterness in her heart.
At this moment, Jiang Yue was a bit like a newborn baby who realized how hard her mother worked; while still being nursed, she was already calculating how to save money and earn income for her mother.
The two of them ran deliveries from after seven until nearly eleven o’clock. Jiang Tan noticed that Jiang Yue’s energy was clearly flagging compared to before, so she said, “Let’s call it a day. Let’s go back, shower, and sleep.”
Hearing this, Jiang Yue gave a slightly delayed response.
The low “Mm” she gave made it clear she was exhausted. As they passed a street filled with snack stalls, Jiang Tan asked, “Are you hungry? Do you want to eat something?”
The night had been a major drain on energy. She had a feeling that, given Jiang Yue’s appetite, she must be hungry after such an expenditure.
Jiang Yue, whose thoughts had begun to drift, blinked. Her nose caught the spicy aroma of various snacks blending together. She hesitated for a moment, then shook her head. “I’m not hungry. Let’s just go back early.”
Eating out would inevitably cost money.
As soon as she heard that tone, Jiang Tan understood. She drove the scooter directly into the snack street. “But I’m hungry. Accompany me and eat a little.”
In truth, Jiang Tan used to get hungry after finishing her shifts and often settled her meals at these snack streets. Now that Jiang Yue was with her, she couldn’t let the woman go hungry—that would make her feel too useless, wouldn’t it?
“But…” Jiang Yue wanted to say more, but Jiang Tan had already parked the scooter in front of a stall.
“Boss, two bowls of beef offal noodles,” Jiang Tan called out. She then turned back to Jiang Yue and said, “The beef offal noodles at this place are especially good. You should try some later.”
After all, for noodle soup to survive in a place like a late-night snack street, it had to be delicious.
Jiang Yue opened her mouth but ultimately said nothing more. Since Jiang Tan had already ordered, there was no point in arguing.
However, a sudden realization dawned on her.
She felt that she might finally know why Jiang Tan was still so poor. Aside from the cost of the suppressants, it was probably because the moment she had money in her pocket, she wanted to spend it.
For example, the last eight yuan last night went toward a marshmallow. Tonight, having just received a small advance, she came out to spend it on a late-night snack—even though they could have just gone back and boiled some noodles.
Unaware of what she was thinking, Jiang Tan pulled her down to sit. However, her words somehow responded to Jiang Yue’s internal thoughts.
“You can’t be too frugal, otherwise life doesn’t have much meaning.”
Jiang Yue: “…”
She suspected Jiang Tan was just making excuses for her own spending habits.
