- Chapter 7 - Shopping: "If You Don't Mind, I Certainly Do"
The item in her hand felt like a hot potato. Just the thought of this garment eventually being worn on another person’s body made her whole skin flush with embarrassment.
Jiang Tan suppressed the awkwardness in her heart, trying her best to act as if nothing were wrong.
It’s fine, it’s fine. These are all brand new right now, so there’s nothing to worry about.
“Wow, this beautiful lady has such a great figure. She must look good in anything,” the shop assistant said, looking at Jiang Yue with envy before glancing at Jiang Tan beside her. “Your girlfriend came along to go shopping with you too.”
Jiang Tan paused and turned to look at her. Where on earth did she get the idea that they were in a girlfriend-girlfriend relationship?
Just as she was about to explain, Jiang Yue unexpectedly gave a faint hum of affirmation first.
Jiang Tan immediately snapped her gaze toward her, but Jiang Yue’s expression remained calm, wearing a shallow smile, seemingly unaffected in the slightest.
Jiang Tan: “…”
She held her tongue and swallowed the question for the time being. After seeing that they were both acting indifferent and had no desire for further conversation, the assistant said they could call her if they needed anything and went to attend to other customers. Jiang Tan leaned in close to Jiang Yue and whispered, “You should pick out better quality underwear; don’t wear things that are too cheap.”
She had noticed earlier that Jiang Yue was mostly looking in the discount section, and every time before she looked at an item, she would check the price on the tag first. Clearly, she was being influenced by her own poverty.
However, items like underwear were different from outer clothes and pants; if the quality was poor, they would be very uncomfortable to wear, and it wouldn’t be good for one’s chest either.
Jiang Yue looked back at her. “Then will you help me choose?”
Since it wasn’t her own money after all, Jiang Yue had no baseline for spending. She didn’t know to what extent Jiang Tan meant when she said “better quality.”
Jiang Tan: “…Are you serious?”
Jiang Yue nodded.
“What size do you wear?” Just as Jiang Tan finished asking, a look of chagrin appeared on her face. She turned away to pick them out herself. First of all, she didn’t care if they were pretty or not; they couldn’t be seen under the clothes anyway. The main priorities were fabric comfort and support.
Jiang Tan felt around and finally picked up two bras that looked relatively standard. “Go try these on and see if the size is right.”
She was only making a guess based on an estimate; the specifics would depend on the comfort once they were on.
“Mm,” Jiang Yue responded softly, taking the underwear into the fitting room.
Jiang Tan waited outside, her heart itching with extreme awkwardness. This was just too embarrassing—having to pick out this kind of thing for someone else.
“Jiang Tan,” Jiang Yue’s voice came from behind the curtain.
“Yeah, what’s wrong?” Jiang Tan responded immediately.
“It’s a bit small.”
“…”
“Wait a moment, I’ll get you new ones.” Jiang Tan hurriedly asked the clerk for two sets one size larger and reached her hand in through the edge of the curtain to hand them over.
Inside the fitting room, Jiang Yue looked at the hand reaching in. The knuckles were slender and well-defined. Perhaps due to engaging in heavy physical labor, the hand appeared very strong and solid overall. Just like Jiang Tan herself, it gave off a strange sense of security.
Jiang Yue took the two bras from her hand and tried them on again. They were much more comfortable than the previous ones, so she said, “These fit.”
Hearing this, Jiang Tan also breathed a sigh of relief. “Okay, then take them off, put your clothes back on, and come out.”
Once Jiang Yue emerged from the fitting room, Jiang Tan took the two suitable sets from her hands. She lowered her head slightly, pursing her lips in embarrassment as she whispered, “We’ll just buy two for now to tide you over. After I get my wages later, I’ll buy two more.”
She only had a total of a bit over six hundred yuan in her pocket. If she bought more than two, she wouldn’t be able to buy anything else.
Jiang Yue nodded to show her understanding.
Seeing this, Jiang Tan felt a bit more at ease. She went to grab two pairs of panties as well and then began to haggle with the shop assistant.
Jiang Tan, who desperately wanted to split every cent in two to spend it, would not allow herself to spend too much over the actual value of the items. She engaged in a fierce back-and-forth tug-of-war of bargaining with the shop owner.
Jiang Yue stood to the side, her eyes widening slightly as she watched all this. Clearly, such a situation had never appeared in her instinctive memories. Furthermore, as she watched Jiang Tan pouring out a stream of words to argue over a few yuan, she seemed to gain another layer of understanding of the other woman.
Despite being such a poor and stingy person, she was actually willing to spend money on a stranger like her. She really was a good person.
Seeing that the bargaining was going nowhere, Jiang Tan brought out her ultimate move. She turned around, grabbed Jiang Yue’s wrist, and said, “Forget it, let’s go look at another shop.”
Jiang Yue was pulled quite abruptly. Although she didn’t understand why Jiang Tan would leave halfway through the bargaining, she was sensible enough not to undermine Jiang Tan. She lifted her feet and silently followed her pace.
Just as the two were about to walk out of the store and into the shop next door, the owner behind them finally called out to them, “Aiya, fine, fine, I’ll give it to you! I’m really selling these to you at cost price. Be a returning customer and make sure to take care of my business more in the future.”
Hearing the owner’s words, Jiang Tan’s footsteps stopped instantly. She pulled Jiang Yue back into the shop and said with a smile and polite small talk, “That’s a given! The boss is so honest; you’re definitely going to make a fortune in the future.”
The owner’s smile was so wide it almost reached the back of her head. “Oh, you speak so nicely for someone so young.” Turning her gaze to Jiang Yue, she added, “Pretty girl, your partner is quite good. Cherish her; she’s the type who knows how to run a household.”
Judging by the way Jiang Tan had just haggled, one could tell she was someone who knew how to manage a home.
Jiang Yue was stunned for a moment. Although she didn’t understand how this involved her, she still curved her eyebrows into a slightly obedient smile and nodded in response.
The two sets of undergarments ended up costing 205 yuan. After paying the money, Jiang Tan took the packaging bag from the owner. This was the maximum limit she could spend on underwear.
“Let’s go.” Jiang Tan didn’t hand the things to Jiang Yue but carried them herself instead.
Jiang Yue nodded and followed her. Once the two had exited the store and walked a bit further away, Jiang Tan finally spoke: “Why did you just agree when she said I was your girlfriend?”
Jiang Tan was a bit panicked. After all, the other woman had a ring on her ring finger. If she really was married, what would happen if her partner came looking for her later and heard rumors that the two of them were a couple? At that point, having her legs broken would be considered a light punishment.
“I didn’t want to explain so much to an outsider,” Jiang Yue said slowly. After all, they would likely never see that person again after this one meeting; let people say what they wanted, there was no need to explain so clearly.
Jiang Tan: “…Well, you certainly are a woman of few words.”
Jiang Tan had noticed it too; compared to her own non-stop talking, Jiang Yue’s words were indeed much fewer.
Jiang Yue looked up at her and curved her eyebrows in a smile. “Not with you.”
Her heart suddenly felt as if it had been pricked by something. Jiang Tan immediately looked away and muttered, “Whatever, I don’t care.”
If she was a woman of few words, so be it—as long as they could communicate.
Next, Jiang Tan took Jiang Yue through several more shops, buying a full set of clothes, pants, and shoes. The money was spent until there were only eight yuan left.
Jiang Tan: “…”
This was even more pathetic than the five hundred yuan balance she had when she first crossed over.
Squeezing the last eight yuan, Jiang Tan turned to look at Jiang Yue, only to see the other woman’s gaze landing on someone eating cotton candy by the roadside.
Gritting her teeth, Jiang Tan held the bags in one hand and pulled Jiang Yue to the cotton candy stall with the other. She directly picked out the largest and cutest pink kitten cotton candy for her, and the eight yuan was spent just like that.
“Here, eat. This is the first and last thing you’ll get to eat that costs money for a while. There won’t be any more opportunities in the short term.” Jiang Tan handed the cotton candy to Jiang Yue. From now on, she could only eat construction site lunch boxes with her.
Looking at the fluffy pink kitten cotton candy handed to her, Jiang Yue was stunned for a moment. After taking it, she first held the cotton candy out to Jiang Tan. “You eat first.”
“You eat it. I don’t like eating these sugary things.” Jiang Tan leaned her head back to avoid it.
That’s not true!
She actually liked sweet things quite a bit, but the cotton candy was meant for Jiang Yue, and sharing one just felt a bit strange.
Seeing her like this, Jiang Yue didn’t persist. She mimicked what she had seen others do and took a gentle sip-like bite of the cotton candy. It was fluffy and soft with almost no physical substance, but the sugary taste still spread from the tip of her tongue.
Actually, the reason she had been watching others eat it earlier was simply because she didn’t know what the thing they were eating was; she was just a bit curious.
However… the texture was unexpected. Jiang Yue felt that she quite liked it.
By the time they finished shopping and returned home, it was already after ten o’clock. Thinking that she still had to handle Jiang Yue’s situation, Jiang Tan ultimately did not go out to deliver food again.
Jiang Tan looked at the solid wood sofa in the living room in a bit of a silence. She was debating whether she should be more assertive and make Jiang Yue sleep in the living room, but Jiang Yue’s body didn’t look as robust as her own, and she worried she might get sick from it.
With a long sigh, “You sleep in the bed; I’ll sleep here,” Jiang Tan said, pointing at the solid wood sofa.
This thing had been left by the landlord. She didn’t know why people in the past liked these rock-hard things so much, but it was true that it hadn’t broken even after decades.
Jiang Yue looked in the direction she pointed. She clasped her hands together somewhat anxiously and said, “That probably isn’t very comfortable to sleep on, is it?”
“Well, we can’t exactly sleep in one bed, and I don’t have the money to rent another room.” Jiang Tan’s tone was somewhat tragic. Being poor to this extent was really something else.
Jiang Yue bit her lip, appearing as if she had made a great deal of mental preparation, and finally said, “I don’t mind.”
Jiang Tan had saved her and was already being troubled enough. Now to take the other person’s bed as well seemed wrong no matter how you looked at it.
Jiang Tan’s eyes widened slightly, and she took a step back, looking a bit startled.
“If you don’t mind, I certainly do!”
“If you really are married, I won’t be able to wash myself clean even if I jump into the Yellow River in the future!”
